As we close out 2024, we turn to the Psalms for wisdom on what it looks like for God's people to have spiritual self awareness. In Psalm 139:23-24, David prays a humble yet bold prayer. It's a prayer for all who desire to draw near to God, and for Him to mold and shape our lives. Listen as Pastor Rob Bentz shares this special message for the White Lake church family in his sermon, Spiritual Self-Awareness.

He lived for many years as a monk at the Monastery of St Cyril of White Lake, where his ascetic struggles won him the respect of his brethren. To flee from the admiration of men he moved further north to Valaam Monastery. But he still attracted the good opinion of his community, so he secretly headed still further north, planning to reach the uninhabited Solovki Island in the White Sea (a large bay of the Arctic Ocean). When he reached the coast, everyone who might take him tried to dissuade him from living in such a harsh place. He answered 'My children, I have a Master who has the power to renew the strength of the old and to enfeeble the young if He so wills. He makes the poor rich, clothes the naked, provides for the destitute and satisfies the starving with a measure of food as he fed five thousand men in the desert.'   While waiting for seasonable sailing weather he met St Germanus (July 30) who lived nearby as a hermit. Together they found a fishing boat and, casting all their trust on the Lord, made the dangerous two-day voyage and set up a hermitage on the island. It became known as a holy place, and thenceforth those living in the world knew not to settle on Solovki, or even to set foot there without good reason. After six years, St Germanus departed, and Sabbatius was left alone.   When he was old, he began to fear that he would die without receiving the life-giving Mysteries, of which he had not partaken since he left Valaam. So he returned to the mainland where he met an abbot Nathanael just as he was taking Holy Communion to a sick man. Sabbatius persuaded the abbot to hear his confession and grant him the priceless gift of Holy Communion. He then settled in a nearby chapel and made ready for his departure from this life. A wealthy merchant from Novgorod visited him to ask for his blessing. The Saint said to him, 'Spend the night here and you will see the grace of God.' The next morning the merchant came to Sabbatius' cell and found that he had reposed during the night; his cell was suffused with a beautiful scent.   The following year, St Germanus, along with St Zosimas (April 17), returned to Solovki island and founded a monastery there, which proved to be the nurturing ground of many Saints.

The Historic Groom Mine & Residence has been owned an operated by us, the Sheahan family, since 1889. Rich in several precious metals including lead, silver and gold, we diligently mined the land, paving our way in Nevada mining history. In time, the Groom Mine became our foundation, livelihood and home. In the 1940s, the U.S. Government set their sights on southern Nevada as prime real estate for an aircraft testing facility. Slowly, the U.S. Government drove every mine in the vicinity out of the area- except for our family, who held and continues to hold six patented mining claims dating back to 1864 and 15 unpatented claims. After Congress passed the General Mining Act of 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant not only signed the White Lake and Conception Patents, but in writing, granted us the “exclusive right to enjoyment of all the lands within the boundaries, forever.” Due to the stature of such claims, our family was able to remain living on and continue mining our land. On June 23, 1954 at approximately 12 p.m., the heart and soul of our property, the mill, was bombed causing more than $1 million in damages. The destruction was devastating, as we watched decades of hard work, dedication and history burst into flames. The wreckage forced us to uproot our home, relocate and re-start our careers elsewhere. Less than a year later, the USAF acquired the land just north of the Groom property and established an Air Force Base, known today as Area 51. Since, we have been granted limited access to our property. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

In this episode, we delve into the ecological impact of geese on White Lake, as residents voice their concerns about the disappearing geese and the need for proper communication and management. We also cover the surge in car thefts across the county, with the New York State Police investigating several cases. On a positive note, the Academy of American Poets recently recognized Sullivan County Poet Laureate Sharon Kennedy-Nolle with a $50,000 fellowship for her project, "Catskilled Poetry for Healing." This initiative aims to use poetry as a powerful tool to aid residents, particularly youth, affected by mental illness and substance abuse. Legal action has been taken against YNHK LLC for constructing unlawful buildings at a former horse farm in Woodbourne. The town alleges the company failed to obtain necessary permits and ignored stop-work orders. Meanwhile, the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project is preserving the cherished era's legacy, paying tribute to the iconic hotels and bungalows that once thrived in Fallsburg. Lastly, we highlight the 40th annual National Night Out event, where the Fallsburg Communities Coalition and law enforcement agencies came together to strengthen the bond between the public and law enforcement, making the community safer for everyone.

Elaine “Foodbod” Boddy presents the sixth episode of the Foodbod Pod in which she and David Treadway visit White Lake Cheese to meet farmer and award-winning artisan cheesemaker, Roger Longman.   Roger discusses his journey into cheesemaking and guides us through the process from the milk and other ingredients to the finished cheeses and describes the range and variety he produces on his farm in Somerset. Returning from a career in engineering, Roger took over the family farm and built on its origins as a small Cheddar producer to create White Lake Cheese, developing it into one of the UK's most respected artisanal cheese producers that has gathered an impressive number of prizes at the World Cheese Awards, several Supreme Champion medals at The Bath & West Cheese Awards as well as a number of coveted Great Taste awards.   White Lake produces a wide range of hand-made cheeses from soft to hard, including sheep's cheese, cow's cheese and goat's cheese using the milk from Roger's own herd of over 700 goats. From Little She to Driftwood, Solstice to Rachel Reserva, English Pecorino to Fetish, Roger shows Elaine how the different cheeses are made and matured and describes the processes and treatments required for each kind of cheese and how flavour and rind is developed.   Elaine joins Roger and food blogger Sally Prosser for a cheese and sourdough lunch and later gets to meet the goats, finds out more about their diet and behaviour and visits the milking parlour and the nursery where the kids are weened.     Find out more and see the recipes featured across the series: https://foodbodpod.com   Watch Elaine and Roger on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@foodbodpod   Join us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thefoodbodpod

White Lake Michigan Vs. Highland Michigan - White Lake and Highland Michigan are very well known cities off the M59 corridor, but the question about these two areas always comes down to, what's the difference between the two? Which one is better? So in this city fight, I'll be breaking down those questions and many more, stay tuned! These two cities are very familiar to me as White Lake is where I have lived over the past year and Highland is where I've spent my childhood and current weekends out on Duck Lake. The best way to decide the differences between these two cities is by talking about which one is better of course, and the way to do that is by breaking down what makes a city a great place to live from their location, city feel, schools, things to do, restaurants, economy, home cost, and of course the overall desirability. Saint of the Day
Our Venerable Father Sabbatius, Founder of the Monastery of Solovki (1435)

Saint of the Day

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 27, 2022 2:50
