This podcast episode of "Sens Callups" covers a variety of topics related to the Ottawa Senators hockey team, including game recaps, team management, and fan reactions. The three hosts are Kardinal, Canuck, and Pan. Here's a breakdown of the key discussion points: Team Performance and Roster: The hosts discuss recent games, including losses against the Rangers and Bruins, and a win against the Leafs. There's also talk about the team's performance in back-to-back games and the team's position in the standings. They analyze individual player performances, such as Forsberg's and Maril Linen's goaltending, as well as scoring from players like Stutzo and Pinto. The potential return of Omar is mentioned. Controversy Regarding Quebec City Games: A significant portion of the episode focuses on the controversy surrounding the possibility of the Senators playing regular season games in Quebec City. The hosts discuss fan concerns about season ticket renewals, potential double-dipping on ticket sales, and the team's marketing approach, including the use of a split jersey featuring a defunct Quebec Nordiques logo. There is also discussion on the team's relationship with the Quebec market and the appropriateness of using the team's mascot, Sparty, in a split jersey. The hosts also discuss the possibility that this was a ploy to push the NCC to make a deal regarding the new arena. Ticket Pricing and Fan Frustration: The hosts express concern about the high cost of tickets, particularly for games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. They also discuss the team's dynamic pricing strategy and how it may be pricing out their own fans, making it easier for visiting fans to attend games in Ottawa. The hosts also read an email from a listener that uses an analogy to describe how the arena has been overrun by Leafs fans. They also discuss the idea of locking tickets for resale or transfer, but at a lower cost, to prevent visiting fans from buying up tickets. Goalie Situation: The hosts discuss the team's goalie situation with the return of injured goalies. They debate whether to keep all three goalies or trade one for other assets. The hosts also discuss the number of goalies used in the past season. Potential Player Acquisitions: The hosts discuss potential trades, including the possibility of acquiring Elias Patterson or JT Miller, but ultimately conclude that it isn't worth the risk to disrupt the team's core at this time. Other Team News: The hosts talk about a potential tariff on the podcast for American listeners, the team's frustration with the National Capital Commission (NCC) regarding the new arena, and other team-related news. They also touch on a recent three-team trade. Podcast Fun: The hosts also have a segment where they answer fun questions like favorite chocolate bars, what they wanted to be as kids, and their first movie star crushes. This episode provides a comprehensive overview of the Ottawa Senators' current situation, while also delving into various controversies and fan concerns, with a bit of light-hearted fun thrown in. Oh and if you can make it through outro, have a listen to the AI created podcast on the episode - it's kind of crazy what tech can do! [One last dip into the vault before a flood of new episodes beginning next week; from 2020, our revealing conversation with a pro hockey great - and Atlanta Flames original!} For 1970s-era NHL hockey fans who remember the eight-year adventure known as the Atlanta Flames, few are likely to forget Dan Bouchard. A tenacious, slightly eccentric and occasionally fight-prone French-Canadian goalie, “Bouch” was an immediate standout between the pipes for the NHL's first-ever Deep South franchise (platooning with fellow Quebecois & expansion draftee Phil Myre during the club's first five seasons) – and a survivor in a league where hard-nosed hockey was the norm and where good goalies were at a premium. Bouchard's big-league call-up to the Flames in 1972 came amidst a frantic period of NHL franchise expansion and relocation driven in large part by the arrival of the challenger World Hockey Association – which debuted alongside Atlanta (and the NY Islanders) that season. And while the collective memory of the original Flames remains muddied by a woeful post-season record (reliably exiting the playoffs in the first round, despite qualifying six out of their eight seasons), as well as a then (and still?) persistent narrative of Southerners' native distaste for ice hockey – Bouchard and Atlanta were actually more competitive and popular than many of the NHL's other 1970s forays in places like Kansas City, Oakland, Denver, and Cleveland. When Nelson Skalbania bought the Flames and moved them to Calgary in 1980, most in Atlanta and around the league assumed that the well-publicized financial struggles of the team and owner Tom Cousins (who also controlled the Omni arena and the NBA Hawks) were to blame. But as Bouchard outlines in this revealing conversation, an explosive league-wide issue was festering behind the scenes – of which he was uniquely aware and determined to address – regardless of the potential consequences to his playing career. Bouch walks us through an eye-opening story that wends its way through the defunct Quebec Nordiques (including the infamous “Good Friday Massacre” vs. the Montreal Canadiens in 1984), the original Winnipeg Jets, the scandalous downfall of a pro hockey Hall of Famer, and fighting for legendary player/coach Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion both on – and off – the ice. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY SPONSOR THANKS Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND & FOLLOW Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable
My guest today, born in Czechia, was drafted in the 2nd round of the NHL entry draft in 1994 by the Quebec Nordiques. He played 159 games in the NHL with Colorado, Anaheim and Chicago. His playing career spanned 22 professional seasons and over that time he accumulated countless awards and accolades including; a Calder cup, 5 NLA championships, 3 Spengler cups, a Spengler cup MVP, twice an AHL all star, an introduction into the Swiss Hockey Hall of Fame and his jersey is hanging from the rafters in Davos where he is considered one of the greatest players to ever play for that storied franchise. He's currently continuing to coach the game he loves and I'm super excited to have him here with me today. Please welcome Josef Marha.

During his 14 year career, he played 9 seasons for the Habs, and also spent 3 seasons with the other Quebec based team, at that time part of the WHA – the Quebec Nordiques. After his retirement from the Habs he spent nine years as a senior business executive with Molson Breweries before becoming the Canadians General Manager from 1995 to 2000 – a challenging time in the team's history. Once Jay Kholos sold the show to various radio stations, it was generally up to those stations to sell the show to sponsors. In New York, The Zero Hour was running on WRVR 106.7-FM. WRVR-FM was initially a public radio station owned and operated by The Riverside Church in New York. It began broadcasting on January 1st, 1961. The Riverside Church, located in Morningside Heights, is an interdenominational, interracial, and international church, and has long been a center of activism and social justice. WRVR was the first station to win a Peabody for its entire programming, in part for its documentary coverage of the civil rights movement in Birmingham in 1963. In addition to religious and philosophical discussions with Riverside clergy and theologians, WRVR programming included addresses by political and cultural leaders, like Indira Gandhi, Aldous Huxley, John F. Kennedy, and Margaret Mead. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his pivotal “Beyond Vietnam” speech at the Riverside Church over WRVR-FM on April 4th, 1967. The station also featured the heralded weekly program Just Jazz with Ed Beach. In September 1971, WRVR went commercial and shifted to a news format, with the exception of Just Jazz, which continued until 1973. By then, WRVR was experimenting with radio drama in both golden age and new time productions. On September 4th, 1973, part two of The Zero Hour's “Wife of the Red-Haired Man” took to the air. Radio legend Mary Jane Croft, who was also the wife of Elliott Lewis, was featured in this episode. Years later, she spoke to SPERDVAC about her radio career and late husband. In September of 1973, WRVR was advertising a World Hockey Association exhibition matchup which featured legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. The New York Raiders and later The Golden Blades were intended to be the upstart WHA's flagship franchise. They were, however, unable to compete with the NHL's New York Rangers and the expansion New York Islanders. After just two seasons, The Golden Blades moved to San Diego. The WHA folded after eight years in 1979 with four teams: The Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets, joining the NHL.
Mike Bossy's rookie season in the NHL has been the stuff of legend since it happened. But breaking league records and bringing fans out of their seats as a young phenom hid what was really going on in Bossy's mind. While projecting preternatural confidence, the winger worried about going to the minors, being attacked by goons roaming the ice and of generally not meeting his own hype. Using Bossy's own quotes from his 1987 book, Boss, we can dive deep into what he was feeling and thinking during his time in junior, when he was deciding whether to sign with the Islanders or the WHA's Quebec Nordiques and during his first days on Long Island. Early in his first camp, Bossy was placed on a line with skilled center Bryan Trottier and burly left winger Clark Gillies, and immediately found his footing among the pros. But that didn't stop the old junior fears from coming true. This is Part One of a supersized two-part episode. In Part Two, we'll examine the rest of Bossy's rookie season, his friendship with Trottier, and a crushing playoff defeat that included a scary injury for the kid. Mike Bossy's autobiography Boss: The Mike Bossy Story, co-written by Barry Meisel, was used extensively, with excerpts read by Michael Paul Smith. It' FRIENDS AND RIVALS EPISODE 118 and I'd wager that the Golden Knights are up 2-0 in their series. Tom and Bill picked the Golden Knights to win; what do Nick and Steve have to say about their precious beloved Panthers? On this episode we talk about our top 5 NHL players who played for teams other than the ones we root for, and we discuss if scoring with a high stick is even a "thing" anymore. The Penguins start to re-shape their hockey operations team with the hiring of Kyle Dubas, and the Devils look for suitors for one of their pending free agents. The Rangers continue to not name a head coach, and the Quebec Nordiques are mentioned a whole bunch of times on FRIENDS AND RIVALS EPISODE 118!
He's in the Hockey Hall of Fame, his jersey is retired and he holds a franchise record for goals scored in a single season (57). All that and you still may not recognize his name. Michel Goulet is too humble to boast about his incredible 15 years in the NHL or the fact that his name appears FOUR times in the top 10 list of single season goals scored in Colorado Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques franchise history. He's too modest to ask why his retired #16 jersey with the Quebec Nordiques isn't recognized somewhere at Ball Arena, home of the Avalanche. Instead, Michel lives his retired life in the Denver area in anonymity, often attending Avalanche and Rockies games without anyone stopping him to talk about his history. When he visits Canada, it's a different story. “Monsieur Goulet” is stopped everywhere. The Canadians know Michel's greatness not only in the NHL, but also as a member of Team Canada who won the Canada Cup twice, beating Sweden in 1984 and Russia in 1987. They also know why he had to retire after a game on March 16, 1994 when he crashed hard into the boards during a Blackhawks game and suffered a severe concussion. After his concussion, Michel had to relearn many basic skills and while he hoped he could return to hockey, his coordination was so off, he had to retire. He soon became the Director of Player Personnel for the Avalanche and was part of their Stanley Cup runs in 1996 and 2001. Michel also served as a scout for the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks. www.CTFRPodcast.com

From a championship Petes team to the Knights, Wolves, Quebec Nordiques and, yes, even the Wheeling Nailers. Suffice to say, John Tanner got around. But he could also stop the puck. And over a career that covered that much geography, you know "Tans" has got some stories to share about the coaches he played for and the characters he played with (though, listening to this, you might come to the conclusion that it's Tanner himself who is the character). The best of the bunch might be the story of how Petes fans treated Tanner during his first return visit to the PMC as a member of the London Knights. Thoughtful, well-spoken, and colourful as hell. The last of our deep dives to feature a team that has not won the World Series. Correction: The hockey Rockies were a Colorado hockey team that eventually moved to New Jersey in the 1980s. They were born as the Kansas City Scouts as an expansion team in 1974-75 not the Quebec Nordiques. Coors Field is a place where hitters thrive and pitchers struggle. 6-27-2022 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by highlighting some of the underrated closers in Major League Baseball this season (in 2022). He then laughs at all the teams' fans that believe their team will be best suited to acquire Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson. John's first prediction of the show is the statement that Robertson will be traded for a team's top ten (10) prospect. John then talks about the fight between the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels. John talks about how an actual baseball fight, not the dog and pony show we see very often, is more entertaining than on the field action in baseball over the last couple of years. After congratulating the Colorado Avalanche on their third (3rd) Stanley Cup, John reminisces about the Quebec Nordiques and the original Winnipeg Jets (1979-1996) and wonders if the NHL missed out on its last expansion by not adding another Canadian team. John then talks about the Deshaun Watson case and his eventual suspension and the futures of Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo, who everybody assumes are going to either Seattle or Carolina. John makes his second prediction when he states Baker Mayfield will still be a member of the Cleveland Browns Week One (1) of this coming NFL season.

The final vote was oh so close, but Cale Makar beat our Nashville Predators Roman Josi as the leagues best defenseman to take home the Norris Trophy. It is the first ever Norris won by a member of the Colorado Avalanche or Quebec Nordiques. Makar was also named to the first team NHL All-Star Team. Joe Sakic has been ridiculously absent from a nomination for the Jim Gregory Award for the leagues best GM. That came to an end this year as Sakic was finally among one of the three finalists, which the winner will be announced in July. We also get to grades for the Avs after their 6-2 defeat in Game 3. With one week left in the NHL's regular season, the Colorado Avalanche are sitting pretty at the top of the standings. Though widely considered favorites to win the Stanley Cup, the team is known to underperform in the post-season. So, is this the year? Can the Avs can get it done? Or could another early exit lead to big changes within the franchise? Producer Paul Karolyi sits down with City Cast Denver sports guy Jake Shapiro to preview the Avs' playoff run. Jake and Paul briefly discuss the Avs' connection with the old Quebec Nordiques and their beautiful powder blue uniforms. For more, check out this episode from last year. Ben is solo today and starts off the hour with Greg Wyshynski from ESPN who discusses his theory as to why offence has exploded, why the NHL should consider expanding the playoffs and of the Leafs should be concerned with a potential first round series against the Cup Champs - Tampa. Next up Ren Lavoie from TV-A Sports looks back at the career of Guy LaFleur who passed away at the age of 70 today. He was so beloved that the fans still gave him a 6 min standing ovation even when returning as a member of the Quebec Nordiques. Ren explains between the multiple Cups and love of the fans, you will never see another player like this in that uniform again. Plus a cool story about his final NHL game that was played in Montreal. We finish with Pat Tabler in Houston with the Jays, the incredible start from Gausman and the great little pick ups like Zack Collins. This Episode of The NASPod We start the show off talking about some milestones that were hit thus far during the 2021-2022 season for various sports. We talk about the Hershey Bears 3000th win in the AHL, Alexander Ovechkin moving to 3rd in all time goals in the NHL, LeBron James becoming the 2ndall time in points and field goals in the NBA, and of course Tom Brady adding to his all time touchdown throws in the NFL. In the second period we follow up on a topic we have discussed quite a few times with some historical information. The NFL did have a farm/development system a few decades ago. We discuss the Atlantic Coast Football League, the Seaboard Football League, the teams in those leagues and who their NFL affiliates were. We also dive into Jason's fleshed out idea for an independent baseball team. Right down to the mascot. It's hilarious and so far off topic that both of us could barely keep it together. In the final period, we address the situation behind the scenes with a recent sponsor, we also decide that since we were recording on Good Friday we would talk about the infamous Good Friday Massacre between the Montreal Canadiens and the Quebec Nordiques from the 1984 NHL Playoffs. Thank you so much for joining us again for. New special episode of beyond the big screen. Today, we are joined by Shane Gilfoyle of the history of hockey podcast to discuss hockey in the Olympics, particularly one of the most important and exciting times in us Olympic hockey history, the famous miracle on ice team of the 1980 Olympics in lake Placid, New York USA.We will be using the 2004 movie miracle as a lens and jumping off point to discuss this fascinating time in sports history, depending on when you are listening to this, the 2018 Olympics and piano, Chang, South Korea are still going on or just wrapped up. So I hope this will [00:01:00] contextualize Olympic hockey a bit more.Thank you so much for coming on. Today's Shane Stevenson. Thank you so much for having me. This is really an honor, truly. I mean, that. I'm really excited to dive into. It's a great, a great story. And you have a really great podcast detailing the history. I love the history of sports. There's just so much there. There really is. I, I, uh, I kind of feel like there's almost not enough of it out there. It's, it's kind of something that people maybe don't don't think about. Um, you know, there's a history of warfare and all of that really juicy stuff, but sports kind of seem to fall by the wayside. Maybe you can tell us a little bit about yourself and your interesting backstory on how you got yourself interested in hockey and starting a hockey podcast.Uh, yeah, I'd love to. Um, originally I I'm, uh, from Colorado, I grew up in a little town of [00:02:00] about 5,000 people, uh, two or three roads, only one of which was paved, uh, that was in. Central Colorado. And I'm kind of up in the mountains a little bit. So it was always cold, always snowy. And, uh, I spent my winters there with my mom, my older brother, and a.I, I really owe a lot of my love for hockey to my mom, which is kind of funny because she's never, ever been a sports person. Uh, but she, she saw that I liked it and, and really encouraged me to do it. And, and we would sit down and watch games, uh, and my. Neighbor actually had an NHL sports package and he would let us come over and watch the games. And, you know, growing up, playing myself, we had about, uh, two sheets of ice. One was, was really, really big. It could fit tons and tons [00:03:00] of kids on it. And then one was, uh, about the, the size of a modern day. Just one zone of, of a hockey rink. Um, and so, you know, one was really big. One was small. And, uh, and, and both, I was so lucky they were very, very nearby. And, uh, so my brother and I would, would go out there and, uh, he he's older. So I would, I would cry more often than he would about getting cold. And, uh, I, you know, I I'd come home cry and swear, and I'd never go back. And, uh, then you know, the, the, the toes would thought and the hands would thaw and I'd warm back up.Sure enough the next day I'd be, I'd be right back out there. Uh, and, and as far as you know, my love for professional hockey, I, uh, I was a mighty ducks of Anaheim kid. You know, I, I grew up with those movies and then when the, the team. Started in, [00:04:00] uh, in Anaheim. I was all about that. I've got to, I even have one of the old starter jackets that were the hot, the hot thing back in the early nineties.And. You know, and, and, and part of my love for that was, was that we didn't have a team of our own, uh, in Colorado. And that all changed in 1995 when com Comcast, uh, COMSAT bought the Quebec Nordiques and, uh, and moved them to Denver. And it was all of a sudden, I, I had my own team and I liked, I really liked all of the players. And then. And I always fancied goalies too. Um, and then December of that year rolled around and we got a guy by the name of Patrick Wall from the Montreal Canadians and his arrival. I liked the team already, but his arrival made me truly, truly fall in love [00:05:00] with, with that team. And I, I mean, they, the, the, the rivalry between them and the Detroit red wings in that era was just second to none.I mean, it was so much fun to watch. And, um, I mean, you could pretty much count on whichever one of those teams emerged from the playoffs was, was going to win the cup and. And so that, that was always, uh, very nice to have. Um, and, uh, you know, growing up, my parents were divorced. My dad, uh, always lived in Ohio.In fact, my, my entire family, both sides are from Ohio. Um, it just so happened that that when they split my mom moved to Colorado, uh, when I was really young and. You know, in kindergarten. And then I grew up out there. My dad stayed here. Well, I would spend summers here. Um, so I'm, I'm just as much in Ohio kid as I am a Colorado kid. And, um, and we would go to the Eastern coast hockey league that was in town, uh, [00:06:00] by the name of the Columbus chill and anybody from central Ohio, his hockey back in those days remembers the Columbus chill. They were. So far ahead of their time and so much fun to watch. And what I mean by ahead of their time is their, their in game antics that, that got the crowd involved and their promotions and just all of the, the fun stuff, um, that they would do.They they're still missed in, in Columbus to this day. Um, I think if this town could support the local NHL team and the Columbus chill. Many people would, would have them back. I'm certain of it. And then, um, the success of the Columbus chill led to the NHL, expanding in Columbus, Ohio on June 25th, 1997.And that brought a team called the Columbus blue jackets to town. And I was still very [00:07:00] young, still very impressionable. And so now my dad lives. Just a Stone's throw north of downtown. And so all of a sudden I've got another NHL team right down the street from my house and I, you know, and they were, they were terrible. They were the absolute antithesis of the Colorado avalanche. The avalanche were winning division titles, winning cups. Um, kicking butt every, every single year. And, and then the blue jackets were the opposite of that, but it really didn't matter because they were from my town and I absolutely loved them. And, and even to this day, really, I feel, you know, despite the divorce and all the, all the stuff that comes from growing up in a split home, um, I feel very lucky to be from two places. Both of which had NHL hockey and, and both of these teams that I absolutely love. So in, uh, in, in June [00:08:00] of 2015, I started a podcast.I've always liked history. I've always had fantastic history teachers, uh, most notably my seventh and eighth grade teacher, um, who just, he, he told stories in such a fascinating way. That it was so clear that, that he enjoyed the story he was telling. He wasn't just reciting chapter and verse and, and all of that stuff.Uh, it was, he was so very much into it and that just came out in his teaching and, um, and, and that really made me fall in love with history. And, um, and so I, I always liked hockey and, um, and so I started thinking. You know, maybe all these people are doing podcasts and, um, and that, but there's not one about hockey history out there.Nobody's doing it. And very similar to, uh, Ray Harris Jr. Of the world [00:09:00] war II podcast, whose show I believe you've been on. And, uh, Mike Duncan of a history of Rome and revolutions. They created their podcasts because that's what they wanted to hear. Nobody was doing a world war II podcast. And Ray finally was like, you know what, I'll do it myself. And that's where I got to with hockey. I waited a couple of years for somebody that. You know, to come out with this thing and nobody did. So I was like, all right, well, I like hockey. I like history. I'll put the two together. I got some encouragement from my wife. Uh, funny enough when, um, when I was saying some things about the, the local teams of the blue jackets about what they should be doing with their team.
On our very first episode of Blindsided, we welcome Clint Malarchuk. Clint is a former National Hockey League goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres. Most people, however, remember Clint for sustaining one of the worst injuries in the history of sports. In 1989, he collided with a player in front of the net. A skate sliced across Clint's neck. And he nearly bled out on the ice. The accident led to the severe deterioration of his mental health. But Clint came out of it. He became one of the first NHL players to speak up on the issue of mental health. His book The Crazy Game helped and inspired countless people. Clint is living proof that you can survive and thrive despite hitting the lowest of lows. Here's Clint Malarchuk on Blindsided. About Our Hosts: Former National Hockey League goaltender Corey Hirsch and psychiatrist Dr. Diane McIntosh team up on Blindsided to allow professional athletes to open up about mental health. The podcast lets listeners hear moments when mental health became the athlete's most important focus. This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. #8. Today's show features major league sports mogul, Shawn Hunter, who has over 25 years experience in nearly all aspects of sports at the highest levels. Shawn's success in sports management is rooted in his belief that people and relationships always come first, and despite the high-stakes world of professional sports, he has always maintained a work environment that was fun and light. In 2018, Hunter founded the Chicago Dogs, members of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball who play at the state-of-the-art Impact Field located in Rosemont, Ill. Prior to the Dogs, Hunter ran AEG Sports & touched nearly everything the global company did, including running the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two years commuting to London while opening O2 Arena. He presided over six MLS teams. During his long career in sports management, he presided over the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and also spent seven years as president of the Phoenix Coyotes & in 1995 when the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver, Hunter was in charge w/building them into the NHL franchise now known as the Colorado Avalanche. He introduced sports sponsorships to the University of Minnesota, and has even run two of America's top cycling events. Despite receiving numerous offers in major league sports, Hunter has chosen a uncommon path in his ownership of the Dogs; many consider him to be the most overqualified minor league baseball CEO; however, his career has come full circle and he's loving his Dogs, who at the time of recording were in the middle of their first playoff series in franchise history.
