Everybody around you says the same thing: get your kid into travel baseball now, or he falls behind forever. Matt Hannaford spent 25 years as an agent, and his answer starts with one question most parents never ask. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Travel baseball is a tool, not a verdict. It can be expensive and worth it, demanding and worth it. What decides which outcome you get is why you're playing in the first place. This episode answers three questions parents actually sent in. When does an 11-year-old need travel baseball? How you tell a broken program from a bad experience? Whether a nine-year-old who plays a year-round schedule is starting too early. Matt walks through what to protect at each age: development from 9 to 14, competition at 14 to 16, exposure at 16 to 18. He explains why one bad season is not proof the whole system failed you, and how to vet a new program without getting sold the same story twice. EPISODE SUMMARY Matt Hannaford and producer Mike open on a follow-up to their travel baseball episode, where Matt argued the whole thing is a tool a family either uses well or wastes. Parents wrote back with real situations, and this Q&A works through three of them. Whitney in Fort Collins has an 11-year-old in rec ball and keeps hearing he'll never catch up if he doesn't jump to travel now. Matt's answer: at 11, a D1 scholarship isn't on the table yet, so that can't be the reason. What travel baseball does at that age is show you where your son stands and give the development pieces a place to grow. Go to events, but go for the right reason, not because everyone else is going. Hector in Albuquerque did one year of travel baseball, called it a money grab, and his wife is ready to quit for good. Matt draws the line between a broken program and a bad choice. One or two disappointing events isn't enough time to judge. A full season with no development plan you were promised is. He warns against jumping to the next team just because it promises a higher likelihood to send players to D1, since the program may have had little to do with those commitments. Denise in Savannah has a nine-year-old already being recruited for a year-round schedule and worries about cost and burnout. Matt reframes the worth-it question: decide what would make it worth it for your family, then build around it. Mix a national tournament with regional ones so a young player gets real competition without being thrown to the wolves. Protect his joy for the game, but don't protect him from failure. Matt closes with Michael Jordan getting cut, Wayne Gretzky's missed shots, and his former client Joey Votto, who learned to climb out of failure at every level. The obstacle is the way through. TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — Travel baseball as a tool 3:28 — Whitney: does an 11-year-old fall behind 4:23 — Get clear on why you're playing 9:35 — Overcoming other parents' pressure 14:00 — Hector: broken program or bad team 14:40 — How much time a program earns 23:21 — Denise: is nine too early 23:56 — Protect the joy, not from failure 30:31 — Jordan, Gretzky, and Joey Votto Have a travel baseball question you don't know who to ask. Matt and Michael open with the paradox of getting your ass kicked and somehow feeling more alive because of it. Matt shares his realization that there is no "there" to arrive at. The car ride IS the destination. Flat tires, closed restaurants, broken grinders. That's not the interruption of life. That IS life. Then things get deep. They wrestle with Dawkins vs. Lennox on justice and whether the universe has a moral order. They explore why science itself presupposes God, why atheism requires its own kind of faith, and why Lennox's answer about morality is devastating. All men are created in the image of God, even the ones who don't believe in Him. The back half dives into inversion. How we try to make reality conform to us instead of conforming ourselves to reality. They tackle sex, polyamory, pornography, and C.S. Lewis's insight from The Abolition of Man. If you optimize for the purpose of a thing, you destroy the thing itself. Optimize for pleasure, and you end up in misery. Cheers y'all
What if every door that ever opened for you started with a message you almost didn't send? In this episode, Susanne Sandler, SVP and GM of Fintech at Mews, a $2.5 billion global hotel technology company, shares how a bold application as a college sophomore led her into the office of the CFO of Merrill Lynch, and how a cold message to a keynote speaker years later led to six years working alongside the future CEO of Booking Holdings. Susanne runs the fintech division at Mews, which accounts for 75% of company revenue. But the principles that drive how she leads trace back to two men who saw her potential before she did, and to one simple belief: you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. [00:03:48] What She Does and Who She Serves SVP and GM of Fintech at Mews, a $2.5 billion global vertical SaaS company Mews calls itself the operating system for modern hotels Runs the fintech business, which is about 75% of company revenue [00:04:30] Who Mews Serves Serves everything from small mom and pop hotels to large global chains Partnerships with Best Western, Choice, and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association AHOA members make up about 60% of US hotels [00:05:30] What Inspires Her Travel is where people have their most memorable experiences Most people name a trip when asked about their best moments of the year Mews removes the manual work so hotels can focus on the guest experience [00:06:48] How She Got Here Started her career in financial services and investing in financial companies Won her undergraduate business plan competition and launched a tech startup in New York The last 12 to 13 years have been focused on travel tech and fintech Says she feels lucky every day doing work that combines both passions [00:08:17] Client Impact: The Multi-Currency Win Launched a product letting hotels offer FX services to guests Guests can lock in their price in their own currency Hotels now earn markup revenue that previously went to banks and card networks Some hotels cover the full cost of all their Mews services from this product alone [00:10:52] AI at Mews: Thoughtful, Not Trendy Building a semantic data layer combining guest, property, and payments data The goal is better insights and experiences, not just cutting headcount Early results from the approach have been incredible [00:12:11] The Vision for Fintech at Mews Wants to build a holistic financial suite for hotels Expanding beyond payments into accounts, loans, and supplier payments Everything is deeply embedded and connected to hotel data [00:13:27] Why Hospitality Is Underserved Hotels have seasonal cash flow that banks struggle to understand Mews holds all bookings data plus a revenue management system That gives a full forward-looking picture of the business Underwriting becomes far easier than a bank reading old financial statements [00:15:08] The First Relationship That Changed Everything Saw an internship posting at NYU Stern for the CFO of Merrill Lynch Assumed it couldn't be the real CFO; applied anyway Walked in thinking worst case she meets someone impressive, best case she gets the job A short-term role became over two years with growing hours and responsibility [00:17:54] What She Learned from Him Finding people who believe in you and see your potential is everything Learned resilience by working under constant high-pressure stakes He was precise and held her fully accountable for her numbers People still compliment her composure; she credits that early training [00:20:24] Treating Every Human with Respect Watched him treat the person cleaning his office the same as a head of state He did it because it was right, not for gain That taught her the kind of person she wanted to become as she grew senior [00:21:31] How He Set Her Up After College He opened doors to meetings with teams across Merrill Lynch She still had to prove herself and work the grueling hours Landed a role investing in equity, debt, and early fintech companies That first role set the tone for the next 20 years [00:25:02] What Makes Mentorship Actually Work Both sides have to invest in the relationship Assigned mentorships often fail; organic ones tend to succeed Nobody owes you anything; it is all give and take [00:26:13] The Second Relationship: Glenn Fogel Saw Glenn deliver a keynote at a conference in 2013 and was blown away He told the story of rebuilding Priceline after the dot-com crash The company is now Booking Holdings with a $135 billion market cap [00:28:18] The Cold Message That Changed Her Career Reached out just to tell him the presentation was incredible He responded, they talked, and he ended up hiring her She worked with him and his team for over six years [00:29:08] What She Learned from Glenn Got a front row seat as he became CEO of Booking Holdings in 2017 Was handed some of the most critical projects for the business Learned what leadership looks like at the highest level Left only because she had learned enough to run a company at IAC [00:31:26] You Miss 100% of the Shots You Don't Take For every story that worked, there are hundreds that went nowhere She repeats the Gretzky line whenever imposter syndrome shows up There is almost no downside to taking the shot [00:33:10] Why Glenn Still Makes Time Even as a global CEO, he finds time for people who reach out He has never become overconfident or self-important He continues supporting people who did right by him Relationships become exponentially more valuable as both people grow KEY QUOTES "Finding those people who believe in you and see potential in you, I would say, is so important." - Susanne Sandler "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Could ticket collecting be where sports cards were years ago? Jeremy Lee, David Chase, and Howard Citron dive deep into one of the hobby's most fascinating and fastest-growing categories. From debut tickets and historic moments to full tickets versus stubs, the conversation explores why more collectors are turning their attention toward pieces of history that were never meant to survive. Along the way, the discussion touches on rarity, grading, collecting versus investing, and whether some of the most important tickets in sports history remain dramatically underappreciated. Plus, Howard shares one of the most significant Wayne Gretzky tickets ever discovered and explains why ticket collectors are so passionate about preserving moments rather than simply collecting cardboard. Dr. Beckett discusses the tricky definition of “GOAT,” arguing there can be more than one and that championships can be overemphasized, especially for great players on weak teams. Using examples like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan vs. peers, Gretzky vs. Mario Lemieux, and Brady surpassing Montana, he explains how hobby demand and card prices often become logarithmic, with the top name far outpacing the “silver medal” tier. He urges collectors to be discerning buyers, consider individual accolades (top three MVP voting, All-Pro/All-NBA), and look for “near-GOATs” or players in the GOAT conversation rather than always chasing the apex at any price. He also notes the risks of unsustainable hype similar to rookie-card spikes, and how personal “my GOAT” narratives can drive collecting. 00:24 What Makes a GOAT 01:23 Winning vs Greatness 01:47 Rankings and Podiums 04:17 GOAT Talk for Collectors 08:19 Stats and Individual Accolades 09:54 Beyond the One True GOAT 11:27 Personal GOAT Stories 12:23 Pick Your Own GOAT

If you've ever wondered what happens when a funny podcast celebrates a birthday, attempts celebrity cameos, and accidentally launches an international hockey-based legal strategy… welcome to this episode of The Rizzuto Show.We kick things off with Lern's birthday, featuring a cake so aggressively buttercream-heavy it may qualify as a controlled substance. It's nostalgic, it's delicious, and it's actively shortening lifespans in real time. Naturally, the crew leans in instead of backing away—because self-control is not part of this funny podcast brand. Then comes the heartbreak: a perfectly planned celebrity cameo involving Warwick Davis gets derailed thanks to knighthood. Yes, apparently becoming “Sir” means you're too fancy for Cameo, and just like that, $250 worth of comedic gold disappears into the void. Tragic. Truly.Meanwhile, Lern's husband is acting like he's in a low-budget spy thriller—hiding gifts, issuing mail warnings, and generally behaving like he's one trench coat away from a full espionage charge. Suspicion levels rise, expectations skyrocket, and honestly… we're just here for the reveal. But the real descent into madness begins with the E-Memoriam segment. This week, we say goodbye to regular ice cream (replaced by melatonin-infused dessert because apparently, we now eat our feelings AND sedate them), Lern's youth, and—brace yourself—traditional methods of catching a cheating partner. Yes, things get weird. Yes, it involves polygraphs. No, we're not proud. And then… the quest.Rafe embarks on what can only be described as a heroic, unnecessary, and deeply entertaining mission to gain entry into Canada—with the help of Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, and Jamie Rivers. There are scrolls. There are speeches. There is a level of commitment that suggests this funny podcast may need adult supervision.Add in Chuck Norris tributes, bizarre relationship scenarios, and a dramatic reenactment that spirals into full theatrical absurdity, and you've got an episode that perfectly captures what The Rizzuto Show does best: organized chaos disguised as a morning show. It's messy, it's ridiculous, and it's exactly why you keep coming back.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Today's episode of The Rizzuto Show funny podcast starts like any normal day—until it very quickly becomes an international legal drama starring one of our own idiots.Rafe is trying to get into Canada. Simple goal, right? Nope. Turns out Canada has rules, memories, and apparently zero chill when it comes to past mistakes. But instead of giving up like a reasonable adult, Rafe does what anyone on a funny podcast would do—he calls in reinforcements. Enter Mark LaForce, an immigration lawyer so confident he basically says, “Relax, I got this,” within five minutes. And just like that, we're off the rails. Now the plan involves:A tribal invitation from the Blackfoot NationFBI fingerprinting (casual)And somehow… possibly getting a recommendation letter from Wayne GretzkyYes. That Wayne Gretzky. The hockey legend. The guy who apparently might be the golden ticket into Canada if he vouches for you. No pressure, Rafe.Meanwhile, the rest of the show continues doing what we do best—spiraling into nonsense. We hype up the absolutely wild finale of Neighbors (which includes things we legally cannot unsee), debate the largest animal we could beat in a fight (confidence wildly outweighs ability), and jump into a round of “Take Five” that proves once again that game shows are only fun when they completely fall apart. There are miracle guesses, suspicious teamwork, and one moment where the Hamburglar becomes the most important figure in modern broadcasting. It's everything you expect from a funny podcast—fast, ridiculous, and somehow held together just enough to keep going. So whether you're here for comedy, chaos, or to see if Rafe actually makes it across the border without being detained, this episode delivers.Spoiler: We're still not sure if he's getting in—but if Gretzky answers the call, anything's possible.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
It's Opening Day in St. Louis, so the crew shows up in full Cardinal red… except for Lern, who proudly opts out of sports like it's a personality trait. The celebration quickly derails into a completely unnecessary investigation into whether Crisco and Lipitor are secretly connected (they're not, but confidence was high). From there, things spiral into robot paranoia, AI taking over jobs, and the psychological horror of the “uncanny valley.” Naturally, this leads to a deeply unsettling debate about how many dead bodies can exist in water before we collectively decide it's not swimmable anymore. Because nothing says “good morning” like existential dread and lake corpse math.March Movie Mayhem continues as the crew debates iconic 90s matchups like Forrest Gump vs The Green Mile, Pulp Fiction vs The Matrix, and the absolute chaos of Dazed and Confused vs Wayne's World. There are strong opinions, questionable logic, and a lot of yelling about what truly defines a “90s movie.” Meanwhile, the show mourns missing out on buying the legendary mechanical rhino from Ace Ventura 2, which somehow sold for nearly $60K (yes, really). This kicks off a full-on spiral into movie prop auctions, including items from Predator that Rafe is now emotionally attached to owning for no practical reason whatsoever. With Moon still out living his best theme park life, the crew becomes obsessed with the HBO series Neighbors, specifically the finale titled “The Man in the Yellow Bikini” (warning: aggressive levels of old man nudity). But the real story is Rafe's quest to get into Canada despite his… let's call them “historical driving achievements.” Enter immigration lawyer Mark LaForce—basically the Avengers-level hero of border crossing—who confidently declares, “You're coming to Canada,” and lays out a surprisingly doable plan involving permits, paperwork, and possibly a letter from Wayne Gretzky (which, apparently, carries more weight than politicians). The segment turns into a full-blown mission, complete with tribal invitations, hockey connections, and the show rallying behind Rafe like he's heading on an epic quest instead of just trying to cross a border legally.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.What to know for the St. Louis Cardinals' 2026 Opening DayBeaufort, Mo., man fatally electrocuted during suspected copper theftGlam influencer arrested for ‘staging her own KIDNAPPING & having innocent husband beaten to boost her follower count'CDC issues travel alert about potentially fatal 'breakbone fever'United to be first US carrier with economy seats that turn into couchesSocial Media's Legal Reckoning Has Begun: ‘We Are in a New World'FedEx launches new same-day delivery service. Dr. Beckett hosts Josh Luber about his 136 page white paper on “BlindBoxification”. They debate Shohei Ohtani's “GOAT” case in comparison to Babe Ruth, including Ruth's influence on Japanese baseball, and discuss hobby myths and legends surrounding iconic cards like the 1952 Topps Mantle and T206 Wagner, arguing the myths are “frosting” on already great cards. The discussion covers Bruce McNall's perceived wealth and relationship with Gretzky, PSA grade price spreads in bull vs. bear markets (especially the gap between 9 and 10), and the Pareto principle as collectors consolidate toward “best of the best” items. Beckett connects blind products to buyers overestimating odds of landing grails and explores an analogy between collecting decisions and Pascal's Wager, including opportunity cost of staying out of the hobby and why 2021 is cited as the only year a new entrant might regret. Beckett also shares a personalized ChatGPT critique of Josh's arguments, touching on novelty, collector intent, information asymmetry changing over time, liquidity vs. hobby health, and saturation risk, while both agree markets adapt and digital repacks may dominate. 00:48 Ohtani vs Babe Ruth 02:30 Mantle and Wagner Myths 03:45 McNall and Gretzky Scandal 04:17 Grading Spreads in Markets 06:14 Pareto and Blind Packs 07:35 Pascal Wager for Collectors 10:59 ChatGPT Critiques the Thesis
After surviving the early wake up call yesterday along with the rest of the nation, the boys are here to talk a little hockey and since we're hittin' the season halfway point more or less, we're throwing a curve ball and talkin' Team Canada, but this one's from the greatest (?!?) tourney ever played - the 1987 Canada Cup! With names like Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Hawerchuk, Coffey, Murphy and Fuhr, the squad in red and white was a who's who of the best in Canada at the time. We took on the world, and secured the cup in epic fashion, defeating the Soviet Union in game 3 of the best of 3 take all! There's never going to be another one like it, so go watch these games wherever you can Sparky! Then, we recap the double heartbreak from Italy, as both the Men's and Women's squads lose their quest for Olympic gold vs the USA - in overtime no less! Should 3 on 3 play determine the winners on such a worldwide scale? Could a 75% Sid helped the Canadian squad? Who got the easy A's graded for their play? And is it to early to look ahead to the French Alps in 2030?Then, we wrap up Garage League regular season play and hunt for 'tendys in the Pro Set Pack Attack!

This week on Sports Cards Live, we're joined for an extended conversation by Jason Masherah, President of Upper Deck, covering what's changing in hockey, what's driving current momentum, and what collectors should understand about new product innovations. We start with quick show and community updates, including where things stand with POPs & COMPs as it moves through the Amazon review process, plus a Hobby Spectrum update as revised questions prepare to roll out based on collector feedback. Then Jason takes us inside Upper Deck's Certified Diamond Dealer Conference, why brick and mortar shops remain the lifeblood of the company, and how direct collector feedback still shapes product decisions even in a world of instant reactions from breaks, message boards, and social media. The centerpiece of Part 1 is the new Rookie Debut Game Jersey program landing in Upper Deck Extended. Jason breaks down: How Upper Deck is acquiring full debut jerseys (and why that matters) The three-tier structure (base jersey, jersey auto numbered to the player's number, and the 1/1 tag) Why Upper Deck chose natural, team-authenticated elements instead of adding a manufactured debut patch Why accessibility matters, not just building one monster 1/1 We close by zooming out: hockey's current rise, why some believe this is the biggest momentum since the Gretzky trade era, and a candid conversation about the hobby's mix of collectors vs flippers, including how “hybrid” behavior shows up in the real world. Follow, subscribe, and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify if you enjoy these conversations.Watch Sports Cards Live on YouTube and join the chat every Saturday night when we're live. In new product releases, GP Sports Cards, Grant Paterson, joins the show to talk about acquiring a $300,000 Wayne Gretzky shield auto 1/1 card, and 2024-25 O-Pee-Chee delayed (1:02:53). Part 3 goes straight into the messiest debate in the hobby right now: card “work” that gets cards into PSA slabs, then quietly back onto the market. A Facebook thread shows collectors openly soaking and pressing Gretzky rookies using Kurt's Card Care, talking about submitting to PSA, and selling afterward. We walk through why that should scare buyers, even when the card ends up in a straight numeric holder. Then we address a comment that tried to lump Mr Minty into the same bucket. We draw a hard line between inspection tools that help you see a card more clearly and products or processes that change the card itself. The distinction matters, and confusing it muddies the conversation. The real core of this segment is the question behind the episode title: are all PSA cards truly the same if the label says the same number? We debate grade worship vs card worship, provenance, disclosure, whether experienced collectors can spot things graders miss, and what happens when the “fix” literally does not last. Where's your line? Microfiber wipe is fine, but what crosses it for you? Would you pay less for a slabbed card if you knew it was soaked or pressed, even if it is a “9”? If PSA offered a clearly labeled “altered” holder, would you want that market to exist or be banned outright? Subscribe for Part 4 and Part 5 as Episode 300 keeps building. At the World Cup draw, Trump was given a medal, a trophy and danced to YMCA. Oh yeah, and Canada drew a decent group of competitors. Face-off, pants off - there's a new steamy hockey show that our panellists love. So far this month pistachios have been recalled, McCain Tasti Taters, and also there's a petition to recall Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The hottest toy of the holiday season is not Bible Guess Who, but after Gavin and Migeul imagine it, we sort of wish it was. This episode is brought to you by Caldera Lab and Audible. Author and mindset disruptor Carla Ondrasik unpacks the radical idea behind 'stop trying'. Carla challenges the culturally accepted virtue of "trying," revealing it as a fear response that keeps us stuck in inaction and self-sabotage.
