This week's Open Mic guest is Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The nation's rural cooperatives are being pushed to increase base load capacity to meet growing demand from businesses and computer storage facilities. But at the same time, new emission standards by the Environmental Protection Agency threaten the existence of generating plants providing electric service to more than 42 million Americans in 48 states. Matheson says as much as 80% of the power used by cooperatives comes from fossil fuels, including both natural gas and coal, and NRECA is pursuing litigation to stay and overturn the EPA's new rules.
For today's discussion we were pleased to host Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Jim's distinguished background includes roles in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the NRECA in 2016, he served in the public policy practice at Squire Patton Boggs based in Washington, D.C. Jim was elected as a U.S. Representative for Utah from 2001 to 2015 and has significant experience in the energy industry. The NRECA is a vital national service organization representing over 900 consumer-owned electric cooperatives, collectively serving 42 million people across 48 states in the US. We were excited to visit with Jim and gain valuable insights into the cooperative landscape. Jim first provides background on the unique structure of electric cooperatives, how they are owned by the members they serve, and focus on consumer interest rather than shareholder interests (a detailed overview of US electric co-ops is linked here). We explore how electric co-ops approach decision making regarding power systems to balance cost, reliability, and emissions reduction, the evolving generation mix, the shrinking margin of error in meeting peak demand and the increasing risk of outages, and the US's struggle to keep up with building new power plants while also shutting down existing ones prematurely. Jim shares his perspective on the need for increased resiliency in the electric grid, particularly through the expansion of transmission infrastructure, and concerns with the feasibility and economic impact of recent EPA regulations targeting emissions reduction from coal and natural gas plants (details linked here). We discuss potential bipartisan efforts to revise permitting and streamline processes, growing awareness among the public on power issues, election year dynamics, the benefits of natural gas as a fuel source for electricity generation, the need for continued vigilance around cybersecurity measures in the electricity sector, the possibility of bipartisan efforts to prioritize energy security and reliability, and more. We greatly appreciate the work Jim and the team at NRECA are doing. Mike Bradley kicked us off by highlighting that markets have been choppy this past week but managed to get by with modest gains. The 10-year bond yield has plunged to ~4.45%, down from ~4.7%, just one week ago. Bond yields dropped despite the FOMC leaving interest rates unchanged, mostly because Chairman Powell signaled the next rate move would likely not be a rate hike. WTI price this past week had collapsed ~5/bbl due to a large increase in US crude oil inventories, less concern over Mideast chaos, and WTI trading through important technical trading levels. Crude oil traders seem to firmly believe that OPEC will not announce they're putting barrels back into the market at their June 1st meeting, especially at sub-~80/bbl. Natural gas is trading at its highest level since early January, mostly due to the monthly futures contract roll. The US natural gas storage surplus is still high, but lower 48 natural gas production is falling faster than expected and recently averaged less than 99bcfd. Most S&P companies have reported Q1 results, and so broader markets will need to look elsewhere for direction. Broader markets have rallied recently as they're less worried today about higher interest rates and higher commodity prices. He further noted that broader markets recently have had a nice bounce because they were technically oversold, and volatility had spiked but are now moving towards overbought territory again. He ended by flagging most energy companies have reported Q1 results and this week will be a heavy dose of SMID-cap E&Ps, Global Oil Majors
Winter storms and cyber attacks are commonly thought of as the risks to electric reliability. But now joining that list is energy policy. In this episode of Power Plays, Jim Matheson, the CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, delves into how the aggressive timeline for EPA's proposed rules to reduce power plant emissions threatens electric system reliability, especially for co-ops.
On this episode, we'll be speaking with Jim Matheson of the National Bison Association about political acitivity in Washington, D.C. We'll also chat with Joe Schuele of the U.S. Meat Export Federation about exporting North America's original red meat to the rest of the world. Jud Seaman of Quality Auction Services checks in to discuss the rundown of domestic bison meat prices.

National Bison Association Executive Director, Jim Matheson
National Bison Association Executive Director, Jim Matheson says that currently, wholesale prices are up and holding steady.
This week's Open Mic guest is Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. After an extended tenure of serving his constituents in Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives, Matheson assumed the reins of the NRECA in 2016. Rural residents formed their own electric cooperatives in the 1930's to bring electric service to their homes and communities. Today, those same member owned organizations serve over half of the land mass in the nation and more than 42-million customers. Matheson speaks to the challenges of meeting growing demand for electric power including electric generation and transmission. He is in favor of renewable energy sources but says the nation needs reliable power generation in the face of growing demand from industry, homes and an influx of electric vehicles. Matheson says the digital divide is real in rural America and the NRECA is working to close the digital gap for the sake of health care, education, precision agriculture and rural development.
Cherryland Electric Cooperative had the exciting opportunity to host National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) CEO Jim Matheson at our 85th Annual Meeting. He spoke with members about what's happening with electric cooperatives at a national level. In this episode of Co-op Energy Talk, Cherryland CEO Rachel Johnson and NRECA Board President Tony Anderson sat down for a deeper discussion on the challenges at hand and what members can do to be part of the solution.
Calving season brings fresh optism to the bison industry. On this episode, Jud Seaman breaks down the USDA meat report, John Halstead of Turner Ranchers talks low-stress handling and Jim Matheson of the NBA gives an update on political efforts.
Jim Matheson, Executive Director of the National Bison Association, took a few moments to speak with us during the Buffalo and the Bison loadouts (No, we're just being goofy – both are now accepted in common speech, as you'll hear). We don't know if he knows Ted Turner, but he does know his marketing stuff, and is a great representative of this wild and wooly breed of livestock. They might seem like the new kids on the block in the world of protein, but they've been on this continent longer than any of us newcomers. The general human population is only now discovering the health and land-regenerative benefits of this awe-inspiring creature. As the 2022 winds down, I thought it might be fun to walk through some of the biggest Edmonton Oilers stories of the year as determined by the traffic on Oilersnation.com, and as I was putting together the list, I realized just how crazy these past 12 months have been. That's why I invited Tyler Yaremchuk on the podcast to help me break down these stories and wrap up the year with our hopes for 2023. To kick off the year-end wrap up, Tyler and I got started with a look back on the trades that have happened for the Oilers this past season, and even though there weren't many of them, just five in total, there's little doubt that Ken Holland got some important work done in terms of shaping this roster. For better or worse, Ken Holland's patience with this roster has given us a rollercoaster year and it was interesting to look back on what he's done so far and what still needs to be done as we work our way into the back half of the 2022-23 campaign. We also checked in on a bunch of rumours and names that the Oilers have been tied to over the past 12 months and how the Oilers may actually be better off not making some of the moves that were supposed to get done. How could we look back at 2022 without diving into some of the negatives we suffered as well, including the 'why are you so pissy' exchange between Jim Matheson and Leon Draisaitl, Dave Tippett being fired and replaced with Jay Woodcroft, and the horrible stretch of games that led to the coaching change in the first place. Mixed in with all of the news from the site were a few of my favourite Baggedmilk and Tyler moments as the two of us continue to have a blast together while making a tonne of content while we were at it, and it was funny to see Tyler give his version of the stories we shared that he didn't know were coming. Lastly, I wrapped up the 2022 year in review with a message of thanks to everyone that has helped me grow this podcast in its first year, and how grateful I am to have the numbers climbing while having so much fun in the process. In today's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I broke down the last week here in Oil Country and how things just can't seem to get much worse, especially after the team suffered what was arguably one of the most depressing losses of the season. I also welcomed Jason Gregor to the podcast to talk about tough questions, the Oilers' struggles, and the price of cheese. Kicking things off, I got started with a look at another brutal week for Oilers fans as the team continues to struggle regardless of who they're playing again, and I don't think I'm talking out of school when I say that Saturday's loss to the Ottawa Senators is one of the most painful games we've had to endure. I also dove into yesterday's pissy scandal after Jim Matheson asked Leon Draisaitl why he's so pissy when the former Hart Trophy winner chose not to elaborate on one of Jim's questions. From there I welcomed Jason Gregor to the show to talk about how what it's like to participate in these media availabilities, what he considers a hard question, and where the Oilers need to go from here. As always, Gregor was a wealth of knowledge and it was fun to throw things at him and have him offer his takes on what the hell is going on around here. Lastly, I wrapped up today's podcast with another round of voicemails that you've all been leaving me over the last week or so, and to put it mildly, they were endlessly entertaining.

The 900 consumer-owned coops in the nation are generally on solid footing and able to meet the needs of rural communities in the 47 states they serve. However, meeting the need for additional power demands will mean a significant investment in securing the base load as well as infrastructure. Matheson says over 60% of the current electric supply is being met with the burning of fossil fuels. Additional demand will need to be met with a reliable power supply. This week's guest on Open Mic is Jim Matheson, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The 900 member cooperatives of the NRECA have a keen eye on potential infrastructure legislation that may come before the 116th Congress. After serving seven terms in the House of Representatives, Matheson hopes a good portion of those funds will be directed to rural zip codes and pointed toward more than roads and bridges. Matheson speaks to a Trump administration proposal to sell some PMA assets, a need for investment in rural broadband and how potential climate change legislation could affect system reliability and affordability of electric service to rural America.
