Christ the King Sunday (November 19, 2022)In Matthew 25, Jesus separates sheep and goats (vs 31-46); the sheep, who are righteous, go to eternal life; the goats go to damnation. Within the passage, Jesus tells the righteous that what they did “to the least of these” they did to him. The passage serves as prod to help our neighbor in need; it also unnerves us with the final sense of judgment. Is there anything but law and judgment here? Well, actually, there is plenty of good news!To get at why this passage contains so much good news, Pastor Rob begins with a reflection on this year's Barbie move and the scene in which Barbie cries for the first time. There is heartache in this world; there is also beauty. Where is Jesus in the midst of this and what is Jesus doing about the heartache, both in the present and in the ultimate?I found this image on “Emily Writes”‘ blog about the movie.
This morning Parishioner John Ott challenges our assumptions around the idea of obedience; recognizing that obedience is fundamental to the Christian path, but, it is more about the location of it in the sense that obedience is located in-between the practice of remembrance and God's abundance. Obedience is therefore not a formulaic and shamed based response, but rather something we do out of overflow in our remembrance of God's faithfulness in the past and our hope in God's presence in the future.

This is the final podcast from Cycle B of the Christian Church's Year where we have journeyed with the Gospel of Mark. This coming Sunday, November 21st is Christ The King Sunday where we bow to our redeemer King. The Gospel reading is from Mark 13:32-37. Here Mark quotes Jesus who is directing us to be alert and keep awake - to ready ourselves for the second coming of Christ. Our joys, sorrows, and anxieties often keep us awake. Knowing we can cast those cares to God and be embraced with the power of Jesus's love certainly removes any distractions. Therefore - be alert, engage Jesus, and stay awake.

1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,‘Behold, your King is coming to you,Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:“Hosanna to the Son of David!‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’Hosanna in the highest!”10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?”11 So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

“Re-Membered Into the Kingdom”, from Colossians 1:11-20 and Luke 23:35-43 Rev. Brian Campbell, Speaker
Jesus, the King of Kings did not need a throne. Instead of a throne He took the cross. On it He prayed for forgiveness for His executioners. From it He promised paradise for the thief on a neighboring cross. And because of His royal sacrifice, the Father “delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” We may not understand all that is happening in the world around us. But we can trust that Christ Jesus is King of Kings. So as the hymn says, “lift high the cross!” For here is our King.

On the final Sunday of the church year, we consider what it means when we say "Jesus is Lord and Savior." Why do we give thanks to God? The answer may seem obvious, but it is always helpful to be remind in a new way why we give God thanks. In this sermon we will reminded why we give God thanks by an ancient prayer that was spoken by Hannah whom the Lord blessed with a child after many years of not be able to conceive a child. In her prayer, Hannah beautifully and thoroughly expresses why we give thanks to Christ our King. After hearing this sermon, we hope you will make a sacrifice of thanksgiving to Christ our King.
