Eva Hausman, Silent co-founder of the Mothers' Day Movement (MDM) joins to remind us that $35B are spent on Mother's Day and what if for the cost of a bouquet of flowers we could change a life? Eva's interest in starting this organization grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother's Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates shifting a portion of Mother's Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of a woman or person they love. Joining Eva is Karen Olson, founder and CEO emeritus of Family Promise, a national non-profit organization. Karen has dedicated her life to transforming the futures of homeless and low-income families. Family Promise is the 2025 Mothers' Day Movement beneficiary. Since 2011, MDM has raised over $1 million, in maternal health, education, hunger, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR.Here are the topics we covered:0:00 Introductions2:47 MDM Mission4:57 MDM Impact 6:20 Family Promise Choice7:33 Family Promise Mission12:16 Misconceptions about Homelessness13:29 Homelessness Trends15:00 MDM Contribution to Beneficiary16:50 Advice 20-Something SelfMemorable Quotes“It's time to move the apostrophe so that it becomes not just Mother's Day honoring a single mother but Mothers' Day, an occasion to try and help mothers around the globe as well." When we cut food programs and money for housing, people will end up in the streets.” Karen Olson“Engage in what you believe in.” U.S. Sen. Elissa SlotkinHere are the 3 Takeaways: For the price of a bouquet of flowers, we can save a life by donating to MDM. Can you believe that $35 Billion was spent in the US on Mother's Day last year?! 100% of your donation to MDM goes towards helping Family Promise achieve their mission and the 2.5 million children in the United States who experience homelessness. Founded in 1988, Family Promise is the nation's leading organization addressing the crisis of homelessness for families with children. With nearly 200 sites across the country, Family Promise leverages local assets, implements real solutions, and advocates for families facing homelessness. As mentioned in the episode:Donation Link Mothers' Day Movement 2025 Family Promise campaign: https://www.mothersdaymovement.org/2025-family-promiseMore about Eva:Born in 1943 in Bridgeport, CT to Jewish refugee parents from Nazi Germany, Eva was privileged to be the only member of my family to be born in the United States a country her parents adored. Her volunteer activities are many and varied but are primarily related to diversity, civil rights and defending against discrimination. She served on the CT board of the Anti-Defamation League for the last 30 years and received multiple awards for her service. More about Karen:Karen's journey began in the mid-1980s when she first committed herself to the noble cause of advocacy for the disenfranchised and homeless. Over the years, Karen's efforts have been recognized including President George H. Bush honoring her with the prestigious Annual Points of Light Award, and the New Jersey Governor's Pride Award recognizing Karen's remarkable social service contributions. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. STORY 2: Discovery High football team takes part in Family Promise bed races to help make a community impact Discovery High’s football team, led by Coach Roy Groshek, is fostering a positive culture by engaging in community events ahead of spring practice starting May 1. The Titans participated in a pep rally at a local elementary school and the 14th annual Bed Race in Lawrenceville, benefiting Family Promise of Gwinnett, which raised $36,000 to combat homelessness. The team finished second in the youth division, with Principal Robert Maffeo steering their bed. Groshek emphasized the importance of community involvement and rewarding players who excel academically and athletically. Spring practice culminates in a scrimmage on May 15 at Seckinger. STORY 3: Lilburn and Norcross homestead exemption bills awaiting decision from governor Lilburn and Norcross residents await Gov. Brian Kemp’s decision on two bills, House Bill 761 and House Bill 772, which could lead to referendums this fall on new or increased homestead tax exemptions. HB 761 proposes a $5,000 exemption for Lilburn homeowners and $10,000 for those 65 and older, while HB 772 would codify Norcross’s escalating senior exemptions, raising the maximum from $45,000 to $90,000 for homeowners aged 65+. Send us a text"What does it mean to truly feel called to serve?" Rob Bergfalk, founder of Compassion Church and Compassion Coffee in Anoka, Minnesota, answers this question through powerful action rather than mere words. When news reports in 2018 showed hundreds of people living in tent cities along Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis, something stirred deeply within Rob. As a youth pastor with 12 years of restaurant industry experience, he found himself uniquely positioned to respond. The result? A visionary model combining faith community and social enterprise to address homelessness through dignity-giving employment and skills training.Rob takes us through his three-year journey from initial calling to opening Compassion Church in 2021 near Stepping Stone Emergency Housing, a 66-bed homeless shelter. Understanding that sustainable impact requires sustainable funding, Rob and his wife Kelsey developed an innovative plan: create a coffee shop that would both employ people experiencing homelessness and generate revenue for their mission. The path wasn't immediate. They started small with a coffee cart at local events like Anoka's famous Halloween celebrations before securing their permanent location in late 2023. Today, Compassion Coffee not only serves premium beverages from award-winning Silverbird Roasting but provides comprehensive training in barista skills, customer service, budgeting, conflict resolution, and other essential life skills. What makes their approach particularly effective is the collaborative community network they've built with organizations like Hope for Youth, Family Promise, and Stepping Stone. Together, they create pathways of support for people of all ages experiencing housing insecurity."I learned that when I thought I was coming to be the hero, that's not the case," Rob shares. "If you enter with humility, you actually grow." This perspective flips the traditional charity model on its head, revealing how serving others transforms both the helper and the helped.Looking for inspiration about using business as a force for good? Karen Olson, a former corporate executive, founded Family Promise after a pivotal encounter with a homeless woman. Fuelled by her own experience with loss and a desire for meaningful work, she built a nationwide organisation addressing family homelessness.Key Takeaways:Personal tragedy can fuel a powerful drive for social change.Grassroots, volunteer-driven models can effectively address complex issues.Family homelessness has unique root causes and requires tailored solutions.Government partnerships and policy reforms are crucial for large-scale impact.Individual actions can contribute to meaningful change in communities. From Personal Tragedy to Social Advocacy: Karen's mother's suicide as a child deeply impacted her, fostering empathy and a drive to help others. A chance encounter with a homeless woman led her to leave the corporate world and start Family Promise.Building Family Promise: Beginning with sandwiches, Family Promise evolved into a national network of 200+ affiliates. It utilises a rotational shelter model in partnership with religious congregations, leveraging volunteers for comprehensive support. Understanding Family Homelessness: Family homelessness, often overlooked, is distinct from individual homelessness. Root causes include poverty and lack of affordable housing. Current housing crises exacerbate the problem, leaving many families "invisible." Family Promise's Impact: With an 81% success rate, Family Promise provides holistic support beyond shelter, including job training and childcare. Its model is cost-effective due to volunteer involvement and community resource utilisation. Systemic Solutions and Policy Reform: Addressing family homelessness requires government partnerships and policy changes. Scaling efforts through increased funding and prioritising affordable housing is essential. Karen's Ongoing Advocacy: Despite retirement and a life-altering injury, Karen continues advocating through speaking and writing, emphasising the need for community involvement and government action. Her book, "Meant for More," inspires readers to create change.Another Extraordinary PASSIONISTA! This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Since 1998, Carpet Diem has been a trusted partner in Utah's construction industry, providing top-quality flooring to homes across the state. They've built a strong reputation and are deeply committed to giving back to the communities they serve. Executive Vice President Holly Waddington joins us with more. Holly Waddington: At Carpet Diem, we believe in strengthening our local communities. We do this by partnering with organizations like Utah HomeAid, the Salt Lake Home Builders Association and Utah Professional Women in Building. Together, we've made significant strides in creating safe and dignified housing for families facing homelessness. Our projects include collaborations with The Road Home, Family Promise and The Other Side Village, impacting countless lives. One of our favorite community outreach efforts is the annual diaper drive. In 2024, we collected over one million diapers for Utah families, thanks to a creative 'Diaper House' competition with local homebuilders. These diapers make a real difference for families struggling with basic needs. It is such a privilege to do business in the beautiful state of Utah with our vibrant economy and quality of life that attracts people from all over the world. There is no better place “to make a house a home.” Derek Miller: With accolades like being one of Utah's fastest-growing companies, a Best Place to Work, and a four-time Best of State recipient for flooring, Carpet Diem truly exemplifies giving back. They're not just laying floors; they're building stronger communities. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: 1/21/25
Homelessness is increasing at alarming rates. In Tulsa alone, homelessness jumped 20% last year. Much of the unhoused are children. Imagine not having a safe place for your children and how scary it is for a child without a home. Tina Massey is the Executive Director of Family Promise of Tulsa County. Massey says children are her passion and every child deserves a home. Family Promise of Tulsa County helps families get back on their feet by providing shelter, transportation and food for up to 120 days. This gives parents a chance to get back on their feet and be able to provide for their children again. Massey tells us about the program and how we can help Tulsa's children. In the world of nonprofits, the journey often begins with a single moment—an unexpected turn that forever alters the trajectory of one's life. For Karen Olson, founder and CEO Emeritus of Family Promise, that moment came when she reached out to a homeless woman outside Grand Central Station with a simple act of kindness—a ham and cheese sandwich and a heartfelt conversation. That exchange illuminated a path she had never envisioned, leading her from a corporate marketing career to a life dedicated to addressing family homelessness in America. In this recent conversation with host Julia Patrick, Karen shares how an impulse to connect with a stranger ultimately transformed not only her own life but also the lives of countless families across the country. "I knew at that point I had crossed an invisible line," she recalls. "I'd always wanted to help people, but I wasn't sure how. Meeting Millie changed that—I saw her humanity, and it moved me to action."That action led to FamilyPromise.org, an organization that now spans nearly 200 affiliates nationwide, providing critical support services, housing solutions, and volunteer-driven assistance to families experiencing homelessness. But as Karen shares, homelessness is often misunderstood. "For many people, homelessness is the man lying on the subway grate or the woman pushing a shopping cart," she explains. "But actually, 35% of all people experiencing homelessness are members of families—and they are invisible."Through Family Promise, Karen has harnessed the power of small acts of kindness, demonstrating how even the simplest gestures—like an early-morning latte given by a volunteer to a struggling mother—can have profound effects. "You never know how people can be moved by small acts of kindness," she reflects . . . . . "That's what changes lives."Karen's story serves as both a call to action and a reminder: Change does not require grand gestures—it begins with recognizing another's humanity, taking that first step, and allowing purpose to unfold. This letter is just one experience of homelessness, and the journey to being housed. Her story shows that it is possible to break the cycle of homelessness. Thank you to our host Emma Hughes & Joe Ader, our producers Gwyn Griffith & Cheree LaPierre, and a special thank you to our voice actor Emberly Jurgens. If you would like to learn more information about Family Promise of Spokane please visit our website. Every fall, we ask our members to prayerfully discern how God calls us to support the church's ministries financially for the upcoming year. Your commitment allows the RPC leadership to budget wisely for the ministries we are called to. It's hard to measure the full impact of your generosity. This past year, we hosted HomeStretch's summer school, welcomed unhoused families through Family Promise, and had over 400 children and volunteers at Vacation Bible School. We've also held hundreds of worship services, Bible studies, mission trips, and retreats. Your generosity truly makes a difference! From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
It was just a ham sandwich.Karen Olson walked that route hundreds of times. Heading home after a long day of work in New York City at pharmaceutical company Warner Lambert, she noticed a woman sitting in front of Grand Central Station who appeared to be homeless. Instead of walking past as she'd done so many times before, she ran across the street and bought the woman a sandwich and a bottle of orange juice. “Thank you,” the woman said. It was the first time she had eaten since the day before. As she sat beside her, Karen took the woman's hand in hers. She was struck by its warmth, even in the cold of a winter's day. “It was in that moment that the vail was lifted,” she said. “I recognized our shared humanity.” What happened that evening changed the course of her life. A few years later Karen founded the Interfaith Hospitality Network, now renamed Family Promise, to address the devastating effects of family homelessness. Now a national movement with more than 192 affiliates across the country, Olson's work has inspired more than 160,000 volunteers in 42 states to make a difference in the lives of families who are struggling.Karen Olson is President Emerita of Family Promise and the author of a new memoir, Meant for More in which she shares the stories of the many people she met and worked with during her uncanny journey. As you listen to this episode, consider:Karen's work reminds us that small acts can have big impact. What is one small act you can take to help someone today? The power of a single act can be multiplied when we invite others to join us. Where are the opportunities to expand your reach by inviting others to join in the work?Karen believes we are “Meant for More?” What is the “More” that you are called towards? You can learn more about Karen Olson on her website. Thank you most of all to our panelists, Wulan, Jamie, Musa, and Norm. Also, a disclaimer: homelessness is a complex issue. Kathryn interviews Author Karen Olson. In 1981, marketing executive Karen Olson hurried to a business meeting in New York City. An elderly, homeless woman outside Grand Central Station caught her eye. Impulsively, Karen darted across the street and bought the woman a sandwich and an orange juice. She listened to the woman's story and learned her name: Millie. This small act of kindness changed the trajectory of her life. With her leadership, determination, and ability to bring people together, she launched a grassroots, local outreach to the homeless, primarily families, that today has turned into a national movement known as Family Promise. Karen now shares her journey, the stories of volunteers and lives changed, and why we must choose to make a difference. For her work, she received the prestigious Annual Points of Light Award from President George H.W. Bush.Kathryn also interviews Author Ella Davar RD.From a young immigrant in New York City to a top expert in wellness, Ella Davar's journey is nothing short of remarkable. Specializing in gut health, she can explain the gut-brain connection that can be affecting not only your weight loss but also contributing to your overall health and well-being. After years of scientific studies at NYU and dedicated work in low-income communities, Ella is now a sought-after expert in longevity and gut health. She currently sees private clients at the #1 Wellness Resort in Miami, The Carillon Hotel.

Today's important conversation centers around when homelessness and disabilities intersect. First, a disclaimer: homelessness is a complex issue. I've been reminded of that throughout each of the conversations we've had. This conversation is no different. We don't claim to explore every part of this intersection, but hope that each conversation brings new clarity to the reality as a whole. Please keep an open, curious mindset as you listen, and seek to learn, just as we are. The disability community is rapidly evolving to using identity-first language like disabled person, in place of person-first language like a person who has a disability. This is because it views disability as being a core component of identity, much like race and gender. Some members of the community, such as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, prefer person-first language. In this episode, the terms may be used interchangeably. t's one of our biggest weekends of the year! We will raise and give away as much money as possible to support our partner charities, The Lake Area Free Clinic, Family Promise, The Bethany Recovery Center, The Oconomowoc Food Pantry, and more! Why? Because we're rich! And people who are rich in this present world are to be rich in good deeds. That's THE fruit of repentance that John the Baptist identified when people came out to be baptized. So, let's be the church. Let's be rich in good deeds. Let's make our community a better place. (Did we mention that we have three new partners this year?!)
