The Sunday Set Up Ep. 11: How To Let Go Without Losing Yourself

Heal Squad x Maria Menounos

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2025 26:03

On this Sunday Setup, we set you up with a quiet but meaningful shift: you don't have to own everything you admire. We talk about letting go—the things, the roles, even the applause. Not because they don't matter, but because they don't define you. You can love the car, the house, the title... without needing to possess it. Admiration doesn't always have to end in acquisition. We talk about being seen. Not the spotlight kind—but the simple, human kind. A “thank you,” a glance, a moment of real acknowledgment. It's not about ego. It's about being known. And that's okay to want. It's okay to need. We talk about puppets, too—yes, literal ones—and how even silly things can anchor connection. Whether it's a fuzzy face on a screen or a familiar voice at the end of the day, presence takes many forms. So this week, take stock. What are you holding that could be admired, not carried? And where could you offer— or receive—a little more acknowledgment? Here's to clear eyes, open hands, and a soft place to land. Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #7osecondCEO a one minute investment for a lifetime of results. In a recent video, I asked you to write down who you admire and what that person or historical figure's admirable traits, rules, and principles are. And you just introduced yourself to what you believe is your best version of yourself. That's right, you just use another person or figure or package in order to talk about what you believe are your most amazing features and where the next area of growth is for you. Ok, so you wrote down all the attributes of the person that you admire, now what I'd like you to do is: Rank yourself on a scale of 1 to 10. One low, ten high for every one of those attributes.  How well are you playing that game?  And then create a plan for how to get to a 10 in every one of those areas.   So, comment below, and tell me what was: The top trait you are going to work on? What was your score?  And, what is the first action that you are going to take going forward?  This is Carl Gould, and this is your #70secondCEO.

How do you build a high-performance culture without turning your company into the Hunger Games? Reed Hastings, co-founder and former CEO of Netflix, shares lessons from a career spent rewriting the rules—from severance as a management tool to “big-hearted champions who pick up the trash.” In this episode, he reveals how Netflix scaled trust, made bold bets before the data was in, and kept its edge by treating employees like adults—not assets. You'll hear how Hastings evaluates talent beyond the interview, the reason he avoids performance improvement plans, and what most leaders misunderstand about judgment, feedback, and innovation.  You'll also hear why he placed a $100 million bet on House of Cards with no pilot, how Drive to Survive changed an entire sport, and why Squid Game caught even Netflix by surprise.  Now focused on a new chapter—owning a ski mountain, reshaping education through AI tutors, and supporting charter schools—Hastings is still doing what he does best: building systems that scale culture, not just product.  If you care about performance without politics—or culture without the clichés—this is a blueprint from one of the clearest thinkers in modern business.  Approximate timestamps: Subject to variation due to dynamically inserted ads: (3:09) Powder Mountain, Skiing Industry, & Buying a Mountain (6:36) Setting Culture in an Organization (9:21) Hiring Process and Evaluating Candidates (14:24) Netflix's 2009 Slide Deck Release (16:26) Talent Density and Performance Culture (17:59) Loyalty and Team Building (19:56) Severance Packages (22:17) Process Vs. Should admiration for Amish culture include a closer look at its harms?

Episode 196: The Amish are often portrayed as paragons of simplicity, faith and hard work — living peacefully in the countryside, growing food without chemicals and raising barns as a community. In an era of rapid change and digital burnout, their lifestyle can seem idyllic, even enviable. But are we overlooking serious ethical concerns in favor of nostalgia? Hosts Scott Rada and Rick Kyte explore why Americans tend to romanticize the Amish while ignoring the costs experienced by many within those communities. The conversation begins with a moment of contrast: a social media post condemning a retailer’s retreat from diversity initiatives followed immediately by another celebrating Amish businesses as wholesome alternatives. That tension — between modern values and traditional practices — drives the discussion forward. Together, the hosts dive into issues often absent from mainstream depictions of Amish life: restricted educational access, lack of medical care, gender inequality and the practice of shunning those who choose to leave. At the same time, they acknowledge the benefits that come with strong social ties and belonging — qualities that many modern communities struggle to maintain. Throughout the discussion, Rada challenges whether we give the Amish a pass simply because their lifestyle appears peaceful or quaint, while Kyte urges listeners to consider what broader society might learn from their sense of purpose and interdependence. It’s a back-and-forth that wrestles with fairness, freedom and the limits of tolerance.

Today, Jay sits down with Sadia Khan, psychotherapist and relationship expert, for a deep and unfiltered conversation on love, commitment, and emotional healing in the modern age. Known for her bold and counterintuitive insights, Sadia brings clarity to the often murky waters of dating, self-worth, and relationship dynamics. Sadia shares her powerful perspective on the importance of being able to walk away from disrespect, and how this one shift can transform who you attract and how you're treated. She challenges conventional dating advice by focusing not on what you attract—but what you entertain—highlighting the role of self-esteem in relationship choices. She explains why emotional unavailability feels attractive, how ghosting reflects poor communication habits, and why your dating app rejection might not be what you think it is. Jay and Sadia dive into the core issues many of her clients face, including infidelity, fear of commitment, and men struggling with masculinity. She unpacks how a lack of male role models, the ability to set boundaries, and people-pleasing behaviors can derail modern masculinity—and how both men and women can break these cycles to build healthier love. Sadia introduces the "Three A’s" women need to fall in love—Attraction, Admiration, and Adoration—and the "Three L’s" men need—Lust, Labor, and Loyalty—exploring how balance in these elements creates deep, lasting connection. She also breaks down why women might cheat on “nice” men and how misunderstanding emotional needs can lead to betrayal. In this episode, you’ll learn: How to Attract and Maintain Healthy Relationships. Why Self-Worth is the Foundation of Love. How to Avoid the Trap of Emotional Immaturity. Delight Your Marriage | Relationship Advice, Christianity, & Sexual Intimacy

Loving Well When You Feel Down Even the strongest marriages go through hard seasons. Whether you're facing emotional burnout, stress, or feeling spiritually distant, it's easy to feel like you have nothing left to give in your relationship. So how do you love your spouse when you feel depleted? This post is your quick “reset”—a reminder of what really matters in marriage and how to keep moving forward, even when your heart feels heavy. Why Your Marriage Matters in God's Eyes Jesus gave us two commandments that anchor everything else: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. And your closest neighbor? It's your spouse. Your marriage is a reflection of how you walk out our love for God. Even when it's hard. What to Do When You Feel Emotionally Empty in Marriage We all go through tough seasons. Illness Financial stress Parenting challenges Mental health struggles It's in these moments that we have to boil it down to the essentials. When you're empty, don't try to fix everything. Just focus on God's call to love—simply and sincerely. Here's what that looks like: Essentials for a Husband: Love Her as Christ Loves the Church What does that mean, practically? Make her feel safe. Don't push, pressure, or demand. Be her steady place. Make her feel known. Ask her about her heart. Get curious about her thoughts, not just her to-do list. Make her feel cherished. Hold her. Smile at her. Take her on a walk. Celebrate her quietly and tenderly. These don't require a perfect mood. They require intentionality. And the reward is deeper connection—even in the middle of life's mess. Essentials for a Wife: Respect, Admiration, and Wholehearted Intimacy This can feel especially hard when you're drained. But again, focus on the essentials: Use respectful words. Even if you're not in the best place emotionally, try phrases like “Thank you for working so hard,” or “I admire how you handled that.” Don't argue or snap. Let kindness guard your tongue, even when emotions are high. Offer intimacy with a full heart. This isn't about obligation. It's about loving your husband in a way he receives love—with joy and generosity, even if you don't initially feel it. When You're Struggling—Love Anyway This is the path Jesus modeled for us. We don't love our spouse because they deserve it. We love them because Jesus asks us to love—sacrificially, tenderly, in the way the other feels loved. When you're struggling and all you can do is offer “just the essentials,” that's enough. God sees your heart. And He blesses your obedience. Final Thoughts Next time you feel like you can't give anything more—come back to this. Read it again. Pray again. Take just one small action. Unity is still possible. Even when you are down.   With love, The DYM Team   PS - If you're ready to take the next step in healing your marriage, we would love to chat with you. Schedule a free Clarity Call at delightym.com/cc   PPS - Here is (another) quote from a recent graduate: "We argued constantly! Literally almost daily. The constant arguing was mentally and physically exhausting! It felt impossible to have peace or joy if my husband was around. It was affecting me so deeply that I was struggling with intense fatigue...[After Delighted Wife], we can actually enjoy each other, we can actually focus on other things. I am not experiencing such intense fatigue all the time and am feeling like I can start getting back to being a productive human. My devotional and prayer time are spent seeking God, seeking Him in the scriptures, trying to catch His heat through His word rather than lamenting and focusing on all the bad. "

The Beautiful Empty: Lent 2025 March 9 – April 13 Blaise Pascal once spoke of the “God-shaped vacuum” in the heart of every person that can only be filled by God. Yet we spend so much of our lives trying to fill that vacuum with everything but God. When we feel worthless, we seek validation from our work. When we suffer from loneliness, we turn to relationships to save us. When we experience boredom, we binge on entertainment. When we feel overwhelmed or self-conscious, we reach for altered states.   The God-shaped hole only grows deeper and wider as we fill it with the things that do not satisfy. But the season of Lent invites us to let go of our attachments and dependencies, emptying ourselves of all our cheap substitutes for God, so we can finally see ourselves for who we really are—needy, imperfect, unfinished, still-becoming people in need of a tender, patient, gracious God. It's only by experiencing our emptiness that the God-shaped hole can finally be filled, healed, and blessed by that which truly satisfies.

What does perfect narcissism look like? We can see it in the evil of Satan.    I read a list the other day about the characteristics of those with narcistic personality disorder. Grandiose Sense of Self-Importance: They believe they are superior and special, deserving of exceptional treatment and recognition. Exploitative Behavior: They manipulate and take advantage of others to get what they want, often without remorse or guilt.  Arrogance and Conceit: They often come across as arrogant and boastful, displaying a sense of superiority. Difficulty Handling Criticism: They react negatively to any perceived criticism, becoming defensive and angry.  Preoccupation with Success and Power: They are often fixated on fantasies of success, power, brilliance, or beauty. Entitlement: An unreasonable expectation of favorable treatment and special privileges, believing they deserve more than others.  Lack of Empathy: Difficulty understanding or sharing the feelings of others, often dismissing or invalidating their emotions.  Need for Admiration and Attention: A constant craving for praise, validation, and attention from others, often seeking it through manipulation or grandstanding. Envy: Experiencing envy of others or believing that others are envious of them. Unwillingness to Accept Responsibility: Blaming others for their mistakes or failures, rather than taking accountability for their actions. I think I could add an eleventh characteristic and this comes from those who have been entrapped by a narcissist into a long-term relationship. 11. An Attractive mask: They have such a beautiful, alluring presence to them that it's not until you're deep into a relationship with them that you are able to see behind the facade.   Read more here

If so, you're not alone. This is common, especially for online business owners who are constantly exposed to online marketing and eager for quick results. This makes them vulnerable to certain marketing strategies that bypass informed consent and manipulate them into buying. When manipulated, you're likely to regret the purchase or forget why you made it.One prevalent deceptive marketing practice is admiration and agitation marketing. In this Heart-Centred Business Podcast episode, I want to discuss this strategy, highlighting traps and red flags so you can avoid them and prevent buyer's remorse or forgetfulness about purchases.Let's break it down:Admiration and agitation marketing involves two primary strategies, and two more hidden strategies: Building audience admiration, agitating their current state, minimising the workload to transform, and making people feel less-than for not having sorted it yet.1. AdmirationAdmiration comes from marketers boasting about their and their clients' achievements, making you admire them, their results, and their clients' results. Such marketing includes celebrating successes or waking up to five-figure sales. It's not only in business-to-business or marketing spaces; it's seen in parenting, relationships, health, and other niches. It's more frequent where money is involved but extends to other areas.Continue reading and access full show notes at: tashcorbin.com/470Let me know your thoughts via our Text FanMail!
