Advent E1 — Over the next four weeks, we'll be exploring the four key words associated with the Advent season: hope, peace, joy, and love, starting with hope. The Hebrew words often translated as “hope,” yakhal and qavah, are rooted in images of waiting and being stretched, like a cord pulled tight. From Noah waiting for the flood waters to recede, to Israel longing for God's loyal love, to Jesus followers ultimate hope in the new creation, the Bible presents hope as an active trust in God's character. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore how the biblical story reframes hope as active waiting, a practice that keeps us moving toward God's promises.FULL SHOW NOTESFor chapter-by-chapter notes including summaries, referenced Scriptures, biblical words, and reflection questions, check out the full show notes for this episode.CHAPTERSYakhal, a Waiting Hope (0:00–11:26)Qavah, a Stretching Hope (11:26–24:10)Biblical Hope vs. Optimism (24:10–27:47)Reflections on Hope With Dylan (27:47-32:50)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESThe Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament by Ludwig Koehler and Walter BaumgartnerThe Life of Moses and Homilies on the Song of Songs by Gregory of NyssaThe Last Battle by C.S. In this stirring and deeply encouraging Advent message, Pastor Karl launches the new series The King Has Come with a powerful exploration of the first great gift Jesus brings: hope.Turning to Luke 2 and the quiet, largely forgotten figures of Simeon and Anna, Pastor Karl paints a vivid picture of two elderly saints who spent decades waiting in faithful obscurity—praying unanswered prayers, worshiping through silence, and serving without recognition. Yet the moment a 40-day-old baby was carried into the temple, their Spirit-illuminated eyes saw what the crowds missed: the long-promised Messiah, the Consolation of Israel, the Redemption of Jerusalem.Through their story, Pastor Karl reveals that biblical hope is not wishful thinking; it is the confident, unshakable expectation of future good rooted in the unchanging character and faithfulness of God. Hope grows in the hidden soil of daily faithfulness, thrives when God chooses to work in silence, and celebrates the tiny seed because it already trusts the coming harvest. Simeon and Anna never saw Jesus preach, heal, or rise from the dead—yet they held the infant King and departed in peace, because they knew who He was long before they saw what He would do.A tender yet convicting word for everyone who has waited a long time and is still waiting, prayed a long time and is still praying, and hoped a long time and is still hoping. In a season that can feel rushed and noisy, this message calls us to slow down, stay faithful, and train our eyes to recognize the presence of the King—even when He shows up wrapped in the ordinary, the small, and the seemingly insignificant.Because the King has come, hope is not dead. It is alive, resilient, and bubbling up in every heart that keeps showing up and keeps looking for Jesus. Essential listening for anyone who needs fresh hope this Christmas.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

This is Paul's Closing Argument in God's Case Against the Human Race, in Romans 3:9-20. We will find the final answer to our question we asked when this court was convened back in Rom. 1:18-20: What's Wrong with the World? Paul answers with one word, the last word in both Rom. 3:9 and 3:20: SIN. We will take a hard look at our great human enemy, sin ... defining it, considering it, sitting under it without being able to wriggle out from under it. It is not easy material, but it is priceless in its TRUTH value, because until we have a certain diagnosis, we cannot find a cure! Come hear God's diagnosis of humanity's greatest problem this Sunday! And then next Sunday, we will consider His glorious CURE for every believer through Jesus Christ our LORD!visit us at: conejochurch.com
Exhibit C is God's Case Against the Human Race, a representative of humanity that is the Best Case - the Jews, God's Chosen People. Paul writes as a consummate insider, a Jew writing about Jews, and the Holy Spirit gave Paul profound insights into the Jewish heart and their sacred texts of the Torah and the Prophets. Paul will reveal how even the Jews, precious to God as the very heart of humanity, the blessed recipients of the oracles of God in the Torah and all the Hebrew Scriptures, still fall short and end up doing the same things as the other Exhibits in the Court. We will see the genius of God in planning specifically to change the hearts of Jewish believers, His way of making hearts holy like He is holy, determined and written in the Torah itself and in Ezekiel.visit us at: conejochurch.com
We return to the Courtroom, for Exhibit B in God's Case Against the Human Race, a representative of humanity that is the Good Case, in Romans 2:1-16. How many of us have heard people describe themselves this way: "I'm a good person, I don't hurt anybody. I'm pretty sure I'm going to heaven because I am a good person..." Sadly, this prevalent view is woefully inaccurate. When Jesus was called "Good Teacher," He rightly pointed out, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." (Mark 10:18). This week's text will make an epic contrast between our double-standard, 'easygoing on ourselves but harsh on others' human judgment, and the unchanging, fair and impartially applied righteous judgment of God. And the main thing that makes God's judgment so right and so different is that it always begins with KINDNESS, for "the kindness of God leads you to repentance." (Rom. 2:4).visit us at: conejochurch.com
Join Rolf Jacobson, Kathryn Schifferdecker, and Craig Koester as they explore Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14 for Christ the King Sunday (November 23, 2025). This powerful episode examines Jeremiah's shocking letter to the Babylonian exiles, where God calls His people not to resist, but to settle down, build homes, and seek the welfare of the very city that conquered them. The hosts unpack the jarring nature of Jeremiah's message—marry, have children, pray for Babylon—in contrast to the rage expressed in Psalm 137. They explore how this ancient text speaks to anyone finding themselves in an unexpected place or life circumstance, offering hope through one of Scripture's most famous promises: "For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope" (Jeremiah 29:11). This episode offers fresh perspective on exile, hope, and what it means to live faithfully in a mixed society while maintaining covenant relationship with God. Perfect preparation for Advent's themes of hope and waiting. Fear can feel overpowering—especially when circumstances press in, when we live in places that feel unsafe, or when anxiety has had time to settle in. But, as we reflect in our daily prayer and devotional, Scripture doesn’t leave us defenseless. In this devotional, Vivian Bricker reminds us that God is with us even when fear seems to surround us. Though we often don’t see His hand at work, God is always moving behind the scenes—striking down evil, guarding us, and providing strength. Even when fear grips our hearts, we can choose to turn to Him, surrender our anxieties at His feet, and let His peace guard our minds (Philippians 4:6–7). Moses’ charge to Israel in Deuteronomy 31:6 still rings for us today: “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God goes with you.” We don’t face life’s dangers alone. He never leaves us. With this promise, our fear can be met with courage rooted not in our own power, but in the faithful presence of God. Today's Bible Reading: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”— Deuteronomy 31:6 Key Takeaways God is always present—even in the darkest moments—and never abandons us. Fear doesn’t need to control us; we can bring it to God in prayer. True courage comes from trusting that God is greater than our threats. The promise in Scripture is not that trouble won’t come, but that we won’t face it alone. Let’s Pray Together Dear God, fear surrounds me and uncertainty abounds. Thank You that You are here with me. Please strengthen my heart to be strong and courageous. Remind me that You will never leave me or forsake me. Help me surrender my fear to You and cling to Your steadfast love and protection. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Related Articles When God Seems Silent—How to Pray When Fear Seizes You – Crosswalk.com Why Do I Still Feel Fear? In this powerful sermon, Guest Speaker Michael Rondon dives into John 5, exploring the story of Jesus healing a man paralyzed for 38 years at the Pool of Bethesda. Titled "Do You Want to Be Made Well?", the message challenges listeners to reflect on their own desire for spiritual and physical healing. Michael emphasizes Jesus' personal approach, meeting individuals in their brokenness, as seen in encounters with Nicodemus, the woman at the well, and the paralyzed man. He unpacks the significance of hope, perseverance, and trusting God's goodness, even when answers are "no" or "not yet." Drawing from the broader context of the Gospel of John, Michael encourages the congregation to find life in Jesus alone, live a legacy that points others to Him, and prepare for eternity. The sermon also highlights the power of God's sovereignty and the call to serve the "one" in front of us, inspiring believers to remain expectant and faithful in their walk with Christ.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this second episode of our four-week series on the Book of Ruth, Pastor Karl explores the theme of God's providence as seen in Ruth Chapter 2. He delves into the distinction between God's miracles and His providence, emphasizing how God supernaturally orchestrates the natural events of our lives for the good of those who love Him. Through the story of Ruth, a Moabite widow, and her mother-in-law Naomi, Pastor Karl illustrates how God's providence brings blessing to those who trust and obey Him, even in the face of hardship. The episode introduces Boaz, a wealthy and godly man who foreshadows Jesus as a kinsman-redeemer, and highlights Ruth's faith, humility, and diligence as she gleans in Boaz's fields. Biblical Hope is not just emotional well-wishing. Biblical hope is the confidence that God will fulfill what He has promised. Joy and peace come from the hope you have in Christ.

Thursday on Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, Melissa Briggs, who has lived in Israel and is very knowledgeable about the ongoing situation in the Holy Land joins us to share with clarity, empathy, respect, and insight 4 Truths To Remember After the October 7th Anniversary. Since we know that God is sovereign, we can look at one of the Hebrew names of God, which is "The Lord of Armies/Hosts". Why is that important? Another name of God in Hebrew comes from Psalm 121:4: "The Guardian or Keeper of Israel". Is it still true that God is the "Guardian of Israel?". And what is Biblical Hope? (And is this misunderstood in our English translations?) Explore HebrewSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
How can we overcome the challenges of reaching every nation and people with Biblical hope in a world where millions are lost daily? What role does the Mission Refocus movement play in addressing the urgent need for global outreach and increasing missionary efforts?

I invite you to continues our exploration of the French words for hope, "espoir" and "esperance," and to dive deeper into their biblical and cultural significance. Scripture draws parallels between the biblical story of Babel in Genesis 11 and the unifying power of hope in Christ. God orchestrated Scripture to be translatable in all languages, which reverses the curse of Babel and offers the potential in Christ to unite us under the banner of hope. As I was researching the connections between "espoir" and "esperance," I was blown away to discover two verses in Scripture that hold both verses together. They have much to tell us, as we too hold both "espoir" and "esperance" in our own hearts. The first, in the Old Testament, unveils the significance of Job's despair and his quest for true hope; the second, in the New Testament, highlights Paul's profound insights into the essence of hope. These complementary perspectives on hope, stemming from Job, the oldest book in the Bible, and 1st Timothy, one of Paul's last letters, ground us deeply in our King and Savior, Jesus Christ. But Esperance is fading from the French landscape. So, I asked both Christian and non-Christian French friends and family members about the influence of Esperance in their lives today. The answers are striking, and I want to invite you to discover them with me – so that you too can form your own informed experience of Esperance in Christ. It has much to do with a deeply felt experience of despair apart from Esperance. Next, I invite you to (re)discover a famous French thinker and author, Blaise Pascal, to embrace the delicate interplay between reason, faith, and mystery. Through Pascal's eloquent words and profound insights, let's see what we can learn about the transformative potential of faith and reason working in harmony. The emphasis on humility, the coexistence of science and faith, and the acknowledgement of the limitations of human understanding in the life and work of Blaise Pascal inspire contemplation and introspection, encouraging us to explore the depths of our beliefs with open hearts and minds. Today's Promise: Romans 15:13 This promise is a prayer for me and you. Hope begins with God and only comes from God. Before you came to Christ, you had no hope. When you came to Christ, Jesus filled you with hope. Now you have hope for the future, hope for eternity, and hope in God's help for day-to-day living. Biblical Hope is not just emotional well-wishing. Biblical hope is the confidence that God will fulfill what He has promised. Joy and peace come from the hope you have in Christ.
In this moving episode, Nicole and Deb have a candid discussion highlighting the stark contrast between superficial reliance on personal performance or external sources and a profound, biblical hope anchored in God's unchanging nature. This impactful episode underscores God's remarkable ability to bring about genuine transformation and rescue.
