THE McCARTNEY LEGACY, Volume 1: 1969 - 73 by Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair, the first of a groundbreaking multivolume set detailing Paul McCartney's life beyond the Beatles. Informed by hundreds of interviews, extensive archival research, and thousands of never-before-seen documents, Kozinn and Sinclair combine an examination of McCartney's personal life with accounts of his musical undertakings to paint a complex portrait of an often tortured, self-doubting perfectionist. When Paul McCartney issued a press release in April 1970 announcing that the Beatles had broken up, no one could have predicted that McCartney himself would go on to have one of the most successful solo careers in music history. Now, journalist and world-renowned Beatles' historian Allan Kozinn and award-winning documentarian Adrian Sinclair chronicle McCartney's pivotal years from 1969 to 1973, a period in which McCartney recreated himself both as a man and a musician in the immediate aftermath of the Beatles breakup. Newly married and with a growing family, McCartney conquered depression and self-doubt, formed a new band, Wings, and recorded five epochal albums culminating in the triumphant smash, Band on the Run. With exacting detail, Kozinn and Sinclair share McCartney's highs and lows in his early post-Beatles years, from his plummet in reputation to his restoration to the top of the charts.Through freshly unearthed documents and exclusive interviews, Kozinn and Sinclair cast new light on famous McCartney myths and provide an in-depth treatment of an era in his life that few have examined closely. They delve into McCartney's internal conflict between opposing sides of his personality - often attributed to him being a Gemini - and how this duality both plagued and motivated him in his post-Beatles career. And of course, THE McCARTNEY LEGACY lifts the hood of the McCartney songwriting engine to reveal the conception of his songs, highlighting connections between his personal life and music. Producers, recording engineers, and musicians provide additional insight into McCartney's creative process in the studio. The volume is the perfect companion to McCartney's own publication The Lyrics, combining archival materials, interviews with McCartney, and testimony from those who worked with him to present an accurate account of the music legend that includes the good, the bad, and everything in between.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to.
Part 1 of our discussion with Allan Kozinn, co-author (with Adrian Sinclair) of "The McCartney Legacy: Volume 1, 1969-1973". Some might describe this book as "Everything you wanted to know about Sir Macca, but was afraid to ask", but that would be inaccurate, as Allan has asked plenty of Paul when he got the opportunity to speak with him several times during "the Kozinn era" at the New York Times.
The book is called The McCartney Legacy: Volume 1 (1969-1973) is out now. It's about Sir Paul and his time directly following the Beatles and forming Wings with his wife Linda. Cutter caught up with the authors Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair.

In earlier episodes, Allan has referred to some of his experiences interviewing people in the Beatles world during his years as the New York Times’ Beatles Desk, and Ken Michaels and Darren DeVivo occasionally joked that they should devote an episode to some of these. Perhaps hearing Allan’s Albert Goldman impression in episode 323 was what did it, but in any case, this turned out to be that show. With Ken and Darren prompting, Allan offers some memories of interviewing Paul, Ringo, Yoko, George Martin, Derek Taylor, Neil Aspinall and others. Back in the 1960s, courtesy of Capitol Records executive Dave Dexter, Jr., American Beatles fans bought different records and often heard very different mixes to those enjoyed by their British counterparts: ones bathed in reverb and converted into fake stereo “with the assistance” of Mr. Dexter. Those mixes have long since been eliminated from the catalogue, but they’re back with a vengeance in this show—and subjected to the scrutiny of Messrs. Taros, Buskin, Bartock and Kozinn as they discuss the pros, cons, and marketing strategies behind these alternately popular and egregious alterations to The Beatles’ music. What emerges is information that will enlighten listeners on both sides of the Atlantic—while jolting them with juxtaposed U.S. and U.K. mixes of some legendary tracks. The music: ‘Thank You Girl’ ‘I’ll Get You’ ‘I Call Your Name’ ‘You Can’t Do That’ ‘The Word’ ‘I’m Looking Through You’ ‘And I Love Her’ ‘She Loves You’ ‘Help!’ ‘She’s a Woman’ ‘I Feel Fine’ ‘I’m Only Sleeping’ ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ ‘Doctor Robert’ ‘That Means a Lot’ ‘Long Tall Sally’ ‘Roll Over Beethoven’
