Send us a textEpisode 186For a man whose name is synonymous with the biggest band the world has ever known, Ringo Starr's story has often been overshadowed. He was the fourth and final piece of the Beatles puzzle, the unassuming drummer who sat at the back while Lennon and McCartney took the spotlight. Yet, beneath the steady beat of his rhythms and the easygoing charm, Ringo Starr's journey was one of resilience, luck, and a quiet determination that carried him from the backstreets of post-war Liverpool to the absolute pinnacle of global fame.Born Richard Starkey, his childhood was anything but glamorous. A sickly boy, he spent more time in hospital beds than in school, narrowly surviving illnesses that could have set his life on a different path. But through it all, there was music. The infectious rhythms of skiffle, the pulse of rock and roll—it was a sound that reached him even as he lay confined to a hospital ward. By the time he was a teenager, he had traded factory work for drumsticks, carving out a name for himself in the smoke-filled clubs of Liverpool's raw and raucous music scene. Then came the call that changed everything. August 1962. The Beatles, already a local phenomenon, had a problem. Their drummer, Pete Best, was out, and they needed someone new—someone rock-solid, with flair, with charisma. The answer? Ringo. In a decision that would alter the course of music history, he stepped behind the kit, and the Fab Four were complete.Yet Ringo was never just ‘the drummer.' His playing, often underrated, was the secret ingredient in the Beatles' alchemy—a backbeat that gave shape and swing to their most legendary songs. And when the band imploded, Ringo did what many never expected: he thrived. While others wrestled with their legacies, he found a new life beyond the Beatles—solo hits, films, collaborations with the biggest names in music, and a second act that has lasted longer than the Beatles themselves. This is the story of the boy from Dingle, who fought through hardship, outlasted expectation, and found his place in history. It's the story of Ringo Starr—the drummer who kept the world in time, the Beatle who never looked back, and the man who, against all odds, just kept playing.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

Jonathan and his guests, joined by his co-host/wife Julia (a more level-headed, casual fan) discuss the rankings, what they think makes each song so great (or not-so-great), and see if it really is a fool's errand to try and rank the music of the greatest band of all time.    In this episode, Jack and Jonathan discuss what it's like to run a Beatles podcast, what makes The Beatles's music so special, their thoughts on the upcoming Beatles biopics, and much more.    Follow Ranking The Beatles on social media here: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rankingthebeatles/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rankingthebeatles YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheBretonSoundTV   Follow us on all social media, @BeatlesEarth ! The group consisted of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles' journey began in the late 1950s when Lennon formed a skiffle group called The Quarrymen. McCartney and Harrison joined later, and the lineup eventually evolved into The Beatles. Ringo Starr replaced their original drummer, Pete Best, in 1962. The Beatles achieved unprecedented success and popularity during the 1960s, often referred to as the "Beatlemania" era. Their music was a blend of various genres, including rock and roll, pop, and later, elements of Indian music and psychedelia. They wrote and recorded numerous hit songs, becoming one of the most innovative and successful bands in the history of popular music. Some of their most famous albums include: 1. **"Please Please Me" (1963) 2. **"A Hard Day's Night" (1964):** The soundtrack to their first film. 3. **"Rubber Soul" (1965):** Marking a shift toward a more experimental sound. 4. **"Revolver" (1966):** Further experimentation and the use of studio techniques. 5. **"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967):** Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time. 6. **"The White Album" (1968):** A double album with diverse musical styles. 7. **"Abbey Road" (1969):** Their final studio album, known for its iconic cover and medley of songs. The Beatles' legacy extends far beyond their music. They revolutionized the music industry, set new standards for songwriting, and influenced countless artists across genres. Their impact on popular culture, fashion, and social movements of the 1960s is immeasurable. The Beatles remain one of the most celebrated and enduring musical acts in history.

This is her first time on Brew Ha Ha but she was a guest on our other podcast, California Wine Country, on this CWC episode of April 27, 2022. In that show we hear about how Leah was getting ready to serve pizzas at the 2022 Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. Herlinda brought Leah into beer judging. Leah will be cooking at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, in October later this year. “They get the best of the best of the chefs, paired up with breweries.” It's Leah's fourth year doing it. Leah's partner this year is a brewery from Iowa called Big Grove, which is the official craft brewer of the Iowa Hawkeyes, check out their website^. Big Grove making a double IPA and an Oktoberfest for the Great American Beer Fest. Leah is cooking for Thursday and Friday nights. To pair with the double IPA she will make pickles with that brew, then make a pickle dip. She will make a mushroom pizza to go with the Oktoberfest. Pizzaleah in Windsor, near Oliver's Pizzaleah is located in Windsor near Oliver's, at 9240 Old Redwood Hwy, #116. Their beer list includes a tap where she rotates local brewers in and out. Right now there is a beer from Ghost Town in Oakland. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Leah has brought some pizzas including the Old Graybeard which is the people's favorite. It's a sweet, spicy and salty with a little orange zest. They make their own sausage for the pizzas. Everything is in-house including the peperoni which is a recipe that Leah worked on for years. They pair that pizza with the Old Caz Free Craig's. Leah participates in international pizza competitions This summer she was at the Caputo Cup in Naples. Caputo is a brand of flour from Naples and they put on the pizza festival and the competition. Leah placed third! See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. When Leah needed a job in Santa Cruz in college, she got hired at a pizza shop where she eventually stayed for more then 2 decades. She opened 20 restaurants for them so she sure knows the business. She opened her restaurant about four years ago and survived the pandemic as the first order of business. It happened to be just as the pandemic was closing everyone down. She weathered the storm by being available for delivery at a time when that was the only way to get food to the people. The beer selection at Pizzaleah is important to Leah. She wants to support local brewers by featuring their products and also whenever possible she tries to support small local suppliers and organic production. The Lola pizza, with pesto, potato and caramelized onion, is paired with the Crispy Crusher from Cooperage.

On this episode of The It's Only Rock And Roll Podcast, we speak with drummer Pete Best, one of only 3 living men who can rightfully claim the designation “former-Beatle”. We discuss his two year role in the band's development, which took them from teenaged amateur rockers, to road-hardened seasoned musicians – culminating with the band' signing with EMI Records, and his infamous firing from the group literally on the eve of their worldwide success. Pete also recounts The Casbah, the teenage live music club his mother started out of the basement of their family home which gave The Beatles their start. ------------------------------ ֎ Official Pete Best Site - https://www.petebest.com/ ֎ To book The Casbah Coffee Club Suites (Air BnB) - https://bit.ly/4dFmEqy Visit the 'It's Only Rock And Roll PODCAST' online at: ● Homepage – http://www.ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast.com ● Facebook – https://facebook.com/ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast/ ● YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/ItsOnlyRockAndRollPODCAST ● Instagram - @itsonlyrockandrollpodcast © 2024 Howlaround Productions. Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth   --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962.   Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to.

The month of August has historically been full of significant changes for the Beatles. In August 1962, Pete Best was fired, and Ringo joined the band, completing the lineup and creating the chemistry that propelled them to worldwide stardom. August 1966 brought the backlash against John's “more popular than Jesus” comments and marked the end of their touring career. And the death of Brian Epstein, in August 1967, was a tragic loss that in many ways, signified the beginning of the end for the Beatles.  But August of 1960 was more like the beginning of the beginning, with the Beatles heading off to Hamburg for the very first time. These intense experiences honed their skills and permanently transformed them as musicians and as people. This year represents incredible an incredible transition in the band, laying the groundwork for everything the band became in the coming years.  We're taking a couple of weeks off for the summer and we'll be back with new episodes later this month. Pete Best was the original drummer with the iconic band The Beatles, playing with them for two years between 1960 and '62. He was unceremoniously fired from the band and replaced with Ringo Starr after its legendary Hamburg, Germany gigs and just before the band would skyrocket to worldwide success with its first album release and smash single "Love Me Do".

After a fluky financial windfall, Mona Best bought a Victorian mansion in Liverpool, opened the Casbah Coffee Club in the cellar, and the Quarrymen, an early version of the Beatles, became the resident band. When the Beatles needed a drummer for their 1960 Hamburg residency, they called on Mona's son Pete. Pete Best became a key player in the Beatles' evolution before being unceremoniously replaced by Ringo Starr on the eve of the band's EMI recording sessions. Here, in vivid detail, he recalls those early years, including the grueling living and playing conditions in Hamburg and his and McCartney's arrest there for attempted arson. What were his impressions of John, Paul and George? What did he think of the first Lennon-McCartney songs? What happened with the Beatles' Decca audition? He also reveals the last time he had contact with any of them and details about the Casbah's new incarnation as a B&B.

1979. It was the Pete best of times, it was the Pete worst of times. In the 9 long years since the break up, there'd yet to be a major bio-pic about the Fabs, not counting than the rather obviously "Magical Mystery Tour"-influenced, "Jaws". Enter Dick Clark, long before he was regenerated into Ryan Seacrest. Dick, with a little help from Pete Best, and a director who'd later work with Jabba The Hutt, created "Birth Of The Beatles"; basically the "Tune In" of its time. (Related: please don't sue us, Mr. Lewishon!) The film aired repeatedly on American television for many years. T.J. grew up with it, via a VHS tape from ABC's Summer, 1980 airing. Tony discovered a different edit altogether, one which played in U.K. cinemas. Which begs the question: is this movie any bloody good?? We just might answer that, and also:
