What separates lawyers who struggle from those who thrive? In this special Part 2 of Be That Lawyer Live, you'll discover how our guests integrate authenticity, focus, and thought leadership into their daily practice to create long-term growth. You'll hear how staying true to yourself, choosing opportunities wisely, and turning passions into professional strengths can open unexpected doors. This is not about chasing quick wins—it's about building a practice that's sustainable, rewarding, and deeply connected. Lean in, because what you'll hear today will challenge how you see your career and your future. In this episode, Steve, Tina, John, and Leslee discuss:The importance of authenticity in building and sustaining client relationshipsBalancing personal life, career demands, and business development commitmentsCreative strategies for leveraging events, panels, and thought leadershipMaintaining consistency and momentum in rainmaking efforts over the long term Key Takeaways:Sharing authentic parts of who you are—whether it's your passions, personal stories, or even hobbies—creates deeper connections with clients and colleagues, making business development feel more natural and sustainable.Learning to say “no” to opportunities that don't align with your goals or values is just as critical as saying “yes,” because it protects your time, energy, and ability to excel in the areas that truly matter.Positioning yourself as a thought leader through speaking on panels, moderating events, and writing articles not only demonstrates expertise but also consistently attracts the right kind of clients and referrals.Long-term success in rainmaking comes from treating business development as an ongoing habit integrated into daily life, rather than a separate task, so it becomes part of who you are and how you work. "Bottom line, listen. You have to listen to what people are saying… because that is how you end up developing an authentic relationship." — Tina Martini "You can't underestimate the trust factor here, the likability factor here, the authenticity factor here… when somebody trusts you and believes in you to such a degree that you can handle their legal matters all under one roof." — John Sciaccotta "If someone invites you to an event, go… if someone wants you there, be there… and then for me, the biggest thing… is just constant giving. And I'm really, I'm not even like, this is authentically me… always thinking about how to help someone else. As Medicaid faces severe cuts in the federal budget that will take health care away from millions of people, Laura Peralta-Schulte, head of NETWORK's government relations team, discusses the life-saving importance of the program for its 60th anniversary. The program, which emerged as part of President Lyndon Johnson's efforts to help people in the United States not just survive but thrive and which expanded greatly under the health care reforms under President Barack Obama, is now under serious threat. Peralta-Schulte discusses why this is not just a matter of policy for Catholics, but a human right under Catholic teaching, as well as an echo of Jesus' healing mission. By this standard, cuts that will take away health care from over 10 million people over the next decade are a moral failure of a very high degree. She calls on all justice-seekers of all background to join NETWORK in the legislative push to roll back these immoral tax cuts and restore health coverage to millions of people who rely on the saving care made available to them by Medicaid. Join in the work of promoting Catholic Social Justice in federal policy by becoming a member of NETWORK.

McDermott Will & Emery just put the finishing touches on a big merger with another firm, and on today's On The Merits podcast, we speak to the firm's chairman, Ira Coleman, about the firm's audacious goals, why he thinks it's important to listen to everyone in the organization, and the firm's bet on tech. "If you're going to put $30 million in AI this year, you have to have scale," he told podcast host Jessie Kamens. "You can't do that if you're a four or five hundred lawyer firm. It's pretty hard to do it if you're a 1,500 lawyer firm." This conversation is a part of our Leading Law Firms project, in which we score law firms using more than just traditional metrics like a firm's bottom line. Throughout the rest of this month, we'll be sharing more interviews with the leaders of other firms like Cahill Gordon & Reindell, DLA Piper, and Susman Godfrey. Send us a textAre you feeling exhausted, irritable, foggy-brained, or experiencing night sweats that leave you drenched? These symptoms aren't just "part of getting older" – they're signs of hormonal changes that can be effectively treated. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Val Schulte joins midwives Missi and Cara to demystify perimenopause and menopause with straightforward, evidence-based information that healthcare providers often miss."I can't describe how excited I am about today," says Missi at the start, acknowledging that many midwives received minimal education about menopause, especially after the Women's Health Initiative study created widespread fear around hormone therapy. Dr. Schulte, who transitioned from traditional OBGYN practice to focusing on hormone therapy and lifestyle medicine, shares how her own perimenopausal symptoms sparked her passion for helping women navigate this transition. The conversation dives deep into practical aspects of hormone testing and treatment options. Dr. Schulte explains how bioidentical progesterone can improve sleep and mood, why testosterone (often overlooked in women) dramatically affects energy and libido, and how proper estrogen therapy protects heart, brain, and bone health. She details the advantages of different delivery methods – from daily creams to pellet therapy that slowly releases hormones over months – and dispels myths about hormone risks. What makes this episode especially valuable is the real-talk about symptoms many women experience but rarely discuss: brain fog that interferes with work, anxiety that appears out of nowhere, joint pain, changes in body odor, even ridges in fingernails. Dr. Schulte connects these seemingly unrelated issues to hormonal fluctuations and offers solutions beyond the standard "here's an antidepressant" approach many providers default to.Whether you're approaching perimenopause, in the thick of menopause, or supporting someone who is, this conversation provides clarity and hope. As Missy realizes toward the end, "I do not have to feel this way for another five years." THE… Patrick Schulte. This Scott Gallagher product under TK, Basketballer from Howell North, SLU Billikin under coach Kalish, a Generation Adidas draft pick for the Columbus Crew that proceeded to win an MLS Cup with them last season… he's hitting his stride. Following Overwhelmed, Brigid Schulte's groundbreaking examination of time management and stress, the prizewinning journalist now turns her attention to the greatest culprit in America's quality-of-life crisis: the way our economy and culture conceive of work. Americans across all demographics, industries, and socioeconomic levels report exhaustion, burnout, and the wish for more meaningful lives. This full-system failure in our structure of work affects everything from gender inequality to domestic stability, and it even shortens our lifespans. Drawing on years of research, Schulte traces the arc of our discontent from a time before the 1980s, when work was compatible with well-being and allowed a single earner to support a family, until today, with millions of people working multiple hourly jobs or in white-collar positions where no hours are ever off duty. She casts a wide net in search of solutions, exploring the movement to institute a four-day workweek, introducing Japan's Housewives Brigade--which demands legal protection for family time--and embedding with CEOs who are making the business case for humane conditions. And she demonstrates the power of a collective and creative demand for change, showing that work can be organized in an infinite number of ways that are good for humans and for business. Fiercely argued and vividly told, rich with stories and informed by deep investigation, Over Work: Transforming the Daily Grind in the Quest for a Better Life (Henry Holt, 2024) lays out a clear vision for ending our punishing grind and reclaiming leisure, joy, and meaning. Brigid Schulte is the author of the bestselling Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time and an award-winning journalist formerly for the Washington Post, where she was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize. She is also the director of the Better Life Lab, the work-family justice and gender equity program at New America. Learn more about your ad choices. The pandemic shook up the way many of us work. It accelerated change in a system often slow to adapt. But more change is needed, argues journalist Brigid Schulte. Her new book, “Over Work,” is centered on the idea that work has not really worked for “far too may people for far too long.” Americans increasingly say they are dissatisfied with their jobs and burned out. It's a bleak setting for employees — and employers. So how do we make work work? Can the daily grind be transformed? Schulte joins MPR News host Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to talk about why we work the way we do and the changes that could make work more productive, autonomous and joyful. Guest:Brigid Schulte is a journalist and the director of the Better Life Lab. Her new book is “Over Work: Transforming the Daily Grind in the Quest for a Better Life.”Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.
