Episode 187 - Bobby Elliott Bobby Elliott is an iconic English rock drummer best known as the powerhouse driving force behind the classic pop/rock band The Hollies. Widely considered one of the finest and most influential drummers of the British Invasion era, he has remained a continuous member of the band since joining them in 1963. * Jazz Beginnings: Growing up in Burnley, Lancashire, Elliott discovered jazz at a young age. He initially emulated big-band legends like Gene Krupa and Chico Hamilton by practicing on makeshift biscuit tins and Cadbury's chocolate boxes with paintbrush handles. * Signature Sound: Renowned for his exceptional timing, dynamic tom-tom rolls, and precise fills, his drumming style provided a fiercely energetic yet sophisticated foundation for The Hollies' famous three-part vocal harmonies. * Peer Recognition: He famously won the 1965 Beat Instrumental Drummer Poll—relegating Keith Moon to third place. Renowned players like Cozy Powell, Ian Paice, and Max Weinberg have cited him as a major influence. * Hit Machine: Alongside guitarist Tony Hicks, Elliott anchored the band through decades of massive hits, including "Bus Stop", "Just One Look", "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)", and "The Air That I Breathe". * Wings Invitation: In 1973, Paul McCartney personally invited Elliott to join his band, Wings. Elliott turned the offer down because his loyalty and "heart" belonged entirely to The Hollies. * Hall of Fame: He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. However, he and Hicks skipped the ceremony in New York because they refused to cancel a pre-booked gig at the London Palladium. * In late 2020, Elliott published his official autobiography, titled It Ain't Heavy, It's My Story, which offers a firsthand look into his six decades on the road and inside iconic studios like Abbey Road Huge thanks to Bobby for taking the time to chat with me about his incredible career, what a truly wonderful gentleman. Equally huge thanks to another legend of the British drumming scene and a good friend of the podcast Bob Henrit for introducing Bobby to me.

The legend himself Jack Douglas (1945-2026) shares stories from five decades of rock history — from producing John Lennon's final album to the memories Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, The Who, and his recent production of Silverplanes. Topics Include: Jack Douglas joins Nate from a snowy driveway, cigar in hand. Silverplanes' debut album Airbus is finally releasing after years of delays. Jack met Silverplanes' Aaron Smart through his college-age son. Aaron turned out to own the Sunset Boulevard studio Jack had worked in. Jeff Emerick mixed the album shortly before his sudden death in 2018. The pandemic added two more years of delay to the release. Jack and Aaron are now label partners with New York real estate billionaire Douglas Durst. Their label operates 50/50 with artists — no standard royalty deals. Signed artists include Robin Taylor Zander and the Detroit Youth Choir. Jack builds songs from a single acoustic guitar performance first. Aerosmith was different — built from the band groove up, lyrics last. Walk This Way had no lyric until a Young Frankenstein gag unlocked it. Jack started his career as a TV composer while janitoring at Record Plant. He worked on sessions that became The Who's Who's Next. Kit Lambert and Keith Moon were both, politely, out of their minds. Jack survived eccentric clients by being reliably sober and crazy simultaneously. John Lennon was the easiest artist Jack ever worked with. John would say: "I'm the artist, you're the producer — let's work like that." Jack engineered Imagine and stayed close to Lennon through the Lost Weekend years. He was in and out of the Fame sessions with Lennon and Bowie. John told Bowie: "I'm writing you the best hit you'll ever have." John knew about — and liked — Aerosmith's cover of "Come Together." George Martin gave Jack a flat in Kensington and a Morgan sportscar. Jack helped produce Ringo's "Grow Old With Me," hiding Here Comes the Sun in the strings. Double Fantasy was secretly recorded at Hit Factory, too far west for fans. John wanted a middle-of-the-road record aimed at people aged 28 to 40. Earl Slick was kept from rehearsals deliberately — a wildcard for fresh solos. Rick Nielsen discovered John's Shea Stadium Rickenbacker with the setlist still taped on. Rick later gifted John a custom all-white Rickenbacker, model 001, never cashed his check. Cheap Trick's "I'm Losing You" session was thrilling but too edgy for the album. Jack hid microphones throughout the sessions, gifting John cassettes on his birthday. Jack destroyed the tape of the last day — John had sworn him to secrecy. After John's murder, Jack and Yoko listened to vault tapes alone until dawn. Yoko later sued Jack; Phil Spector's incoherent testimony and a wig mishap followed. Jann Wenner called Jack a nobody — until Jack's lawyer read Wenner's own book aloud. The jury was out ten minutes. Jack won millions. The 2010 Stripped Down version was mixed in the exact same Record Plant room. Live at Budokan was actually Osaka — Budokan tapes were too poorly recorded. Jack rebuilt the Osaka drum kit using speaker-driven bass frequencies and filtered signals. Aerosmith's Live Bootleg was sent back to Sony unchanged after Jack faked a remix session. Once more we return to the topic of geese. The beast not the band but they will be at Bonnaroo this year and apparently you can sneak in boxed wine in a baby stroller and fireworks in a guitar case and say you might be asked to fill in for someone onstage because that happened when Keith Moon passed out at a Who concert after drinking too much boxed wine out of a baby stroller. But, as Maury Povich knows, it's not your father's concert.

Carrière solo En 1971, John Entwistle sort son premier album solo : Smash Your Head Against the Wall. Send us a textPASSION OF THE CHRIST   “And in the ending days of two-thousand, twenty-five in the Year of our Bloodied Lord (R.I.P.), the three unwise men of TGTPTU shall gather and in their folly alloweth the unholy host Thomas to select the season's Christmas-adjacent movie. And there will be great wailing and weeping and gnashing of ill-cared for teeth by his selection. Yet the episode shall not be mid. The hosts shall bloody nail it. And there shall be great rejoicing in one accord upon its record.” -The Book of Ryan (or on its cover) 5:16-17, Revised New King Jim Edition   Yes, ho-ho-humbug, it's our annual cross to bear: The Christmas-adjacent movie to end the year. In a rare moment of collective (fatigue / wisdom / pure awesomeness / mental constipation / fugue ß strike as appropriate), The Good The Pod and The Ugly hosts Ken and Ryan have allowed Thomas to pick the flick this season. He took a chance on a film he'd always wanted to but hadn't seen, and that cinema selection took them to church! Tom picked the Mel Gibson co-written, co-produced, and solely(soul-ly?)-directed, Jesus story spoiler: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004).  To their eternal credit, the hosts with no loyalty to any of the major- or bush-league Christian denominations managed to keep civil and polite, if not to each other then to the source material and Gibson's passionate release. Ryan's Catholic upbringing comes in handy for this, his third viewing, as he explains the church's different classifications of visions and what parts of the film pull from scripture and which are attributable to a 19th century fever dream.    This ep, Ken talks sexy Satan, Ryan talks sexy Jesus, guest Jack has an unsexy hot take takeoff and landing, and his fellow Gen Z'er Tom sticks it to the olds after mis-Clarking. Skip to the end of the ep for a brief year-end recap of the best and worst first-watched and re-watched films covered in 2025 or skip further for spoilers from Ken as he shares his bulk-pricing Christmas presents for his fellow hosts.   In the new year, TGTPTU takes a Graycation (or is Going Gray or lets its Gray Pride shine) with the start of Season 16, tentatively titled By the Powers of (James) Gray's Skull. And that's the gospel truth.  Answer to the question raised during the episode: We're Not Going to Take It.  Keith Moon wept.  THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

This episode covers his technique, sound, gear, studio approach, compositions, touring stories, engineering background, and the experiences that shaped his career. Simon tells the story of stepping into Toto after the passing of Jeff Porcaro and what it took to honor Jeff's legacy while still bringing his own sound, groove, and musical identity to the band. He breaks down his years touring and recording with The Who, including the 1989 anniversary tour and his approach to Keith Moon's parts. We also go deep into his early session years with Judas Priest and the making of Sin After Sin, including the double bass drumming that influenced an entire generation of metal drummers. Simon talks about his long running musical connection with Hiromi and the creation of Hiromi's Trio Project, the interplay that developed between them, and stories of his brotherhood with contrabass guitar legend Anthony Jackson. Simon shares the evolution of his writing and bandleading with Protocol, including how he builds compositions from drum ideas and how he made the project happen. We go into how he records drums and stories of so many of his ensembles. We explore his open handed and ambidextrous technique, his approach to tom and cymbal layouts, drum tuning, how he builds his drum tones in the studio, and his engineering background from his early years working in studios. This episode is ideal for drummers, musicians, audio engineers, producers, and fans of Toto, Jeff Porcaro, The Who, Keith Moon, Judas Priest, heavy metal drumming, Mike Oldfield, progressive rock, fusion, Hiromi, Anthony Jackson, and anyone who wants to understand how a legendary drummer built a world class career. It is with heavy hearts that we present this week's episode as a tribute to Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley. The rock 'n' roll icon, legendary guitar god, and former KISS guitarist, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall in his home studio weeks earlier. Kevin has a profound connection to KISS and Ace as a lifelong fan and proud member of the KISS Army. While not an obscure artist by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had 10 gold records, 5 multi-platinum records with KISS, and a platinum solo album), the duo tries to share some lesser-known songs, including a few crazy guest appearances. Excuse Kevin's extensive ramblings about the great Space Ace, but this loss was hard, and the tribute is necessary. Ace was a true character, who played a character, and played with character. A genuine original. A true rock star.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. On Episode 115 of the Planet LP Podcast, Ted Asregadoo dives deep into a pivotal moment in The Who's history — their 1978 album Who Are You — with longtime Who aficionado Jason Hare. Who Are You may not top most fans' lists of the band's greatest albums, but it remains one of the most significant. Released on August 18, 1978, it was the last record to feature the original lineup and arrived at a moment when the band — and Pete Townshend in particular — were confronting their own fading relevance. As rock critic Greil Marcus noted in his 1978 Rolling Stone review, much of the album is shaped by Townshend's anxieties about obsolescence, artistic exhaustion, and the shifting musical landscape. Forty-seven years later, Who Are You gets the full Super Deluxe treatment, just as The Who call it quits (again) after their final “This Song Is Over” tour in 2025 — a greatest-hits victory lap for casual fans, but not always the deep-cut celebration hardcore devotees were hoping for. Ted and Jason unpack what this new box set offers: the unheard material, the surprises, what genuinely adds to the album's legacy, and where the collection may come up short. They also take a candid look at Keith Moon's final performances — the brilliance, the decline, and the tragedy of a 32-year-old who seemed decades older. It's an episode for fans who want more than nostalgia — they want context, history, and a dash of humor in The Who's transitional chapter. Steve Fox's Old School sponsors the Planet LP podcast! Steve Fox's Old School. It's the first place to go to stream R&B dance hits from the 1970s to the 1990s. Read Greil Marcus's 1978 review of "Who Are You" in Rolling Stone magazine.

Sex, drugs, and spectacularly stupid decisions! This special greatest hits episode of History's Greatest Idiots rocks through the most legendary bad choices in music history, featuring four icons who proved that talent and terrible judgment make the perfect rock and roll cocktail.First up: Rick James, the funk superstar who turned "Super Freak" into a lifestyle philosophy, complete with kidnapping charges, cocaine binges, and the kind of career self-sabotage that makes train wrecks look organized. Then we dive into Keith Moon, The Who's drummer, whose explosive personality matched his playing style, literally blowing up hotel toilets, driving cars into swimming pools, and somehow making other rock stars say "that guy's too wild for us."We'll explore Malcolm McLaren, the punk impresario who created the Sex Pistols purely to destroy the music industry, then watched his masterpiece implode when Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious actually meant all that anarchist stuff. Finally, Morrissey rounds out our line-up: the melancholy maestro whose genius for alienating fans, cities, and entire countries turned him from an indie darling into a professional controversy generator. From drug-fuelled hotel destruction to punk rock manipulation schemes, these music legends prove that sometimes the biggest disasters happen when brilliant artists meet absolutely zero impulse control. Join Lev and Derek as they count down the greatest hits of rock and roll's most gloriously idiotic moments.Perfect for music fans, rock history buffs, and anyone who's ever wondered how someone can be simultaneously a genius and completely insane.https://www.patreon.com/HistorysGreatestIdiotshttps://www.instagram.com/historysgreatestidiotsArtist: Sarah Cheyhttps://www.fiverr.com/sarahcheyAnimation: Daniel Wilsonhttps://www.instagram.com/wilson_the_wilson/Music: Andrew Wilsonhttps://www.instagram.com/andrews_electric_sheepWant to create live streams like this? He joins us to discuss his musical childhood in Los Angeles (including his father's world-famous, sports-arena anthem); early gigs by future stars Motley Crue, City Kidd (Tesla) and Dante Fox (Great White); and how W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes upgraded his first “real” band, Odin, to Hollywood headliners (and how Odin, in turn, “may” have “fueled” Holmes' notorious pool scene in “Decline of Western Civilization Pt.II: The Metal Years”). Keith Moon of the Who was the prototype for rock drummers, both onstage and off. His drumming was wholly unique. Like his bandmates' behavior, it was violent, and like his personality, it was electric. Everyone loved Keith Moon aka “Moon The Loon” and it seemed that people never tired of his always hilarious and sometimes violent, drunken hijinks until one fateful night when a crew of British skinheads took issue with the drummer's rockstar excess. The results were disastrous. To see the complete list of contributors, visit disgracelandpod.com This episode was originally published on October 9, 2018. Frank Zappa is an odd duck. His massive back catalogue of albums attracts both reverence and ambivalence from music fans. Stylistically, he covered so much ground covering doo wop, blues, psych, jazz fusion and dissonant orchestral music. Unlike many of his rock and roll contemporaries, he always believed in infusing a sense of humour into his music – both compositionally and lyrically….though since what strikes some as funny is so subjective, it couldn't appeal to everyone. He wrote about commercialism in America, the hypocrisy of conservatives and liberals in American society, and….umm….body parts. Welcome to episode 127 of See Hear Podcast. Tim, Kerry and I pontificate about the work of Frank Zappa with an eye towards his 1972 film, 200 Motels. It's a surreal work that's supposed to be his take on what life on the road is like for a working band – encountering rednecks and groupies, band egos and paranoia (the latter for good reason in this instance), and drug use. The film is vignette based with music provided by the 2nd incarnation of the Mothers of Invention and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Zappa spent 4 years composing and arranging the music, and much less time writing a script. That works out as well as expected. As well as discussing 200 Motels, we put the background towards its creation in context, thanks to an excellent documentary called “Frank Zappa – Free Jazz, Movie Madness & Another Mothers”(available on Tubi). Many thanks to Tom Stein for making us aware of that film's existence. If our discussion goes all over the place, maybe it's a tribute to the structure of 200 Motels. Tune in and hear where we stand on this surreal piece of cinema. Is it Luis Bunuel? Well….would Luis Bunuel have dressed Ringo Starr up as a tall dwarf with a desire to do something with a genie lamp to Keith Moon dressed as a nun? The answer is probably “When will we get paid….” If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. Pete Townshend is the songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of The Who. The band first stormed the pop charts sixty years ago, with teenage anthems including I Can't Explain, Substitute and My Generation. Broader songwriting ambitions led him to create the rock opera Tommy in 1969, and the concept album Quadrophenia four years later. Both projects were adapted as films, and Quadrophenia has now been staged as a ballet by Sadlers Wells. Throughout the seventies, The Who were regarded as the biggest and loudest live act in the world. They played at Woodstock, at Live Aid, Live 8 and the 2012 Olympic closing ceremony. Despite the deaths of drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwhistle, Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey continue to perform as The Who. Pete Townshend talks to John Wilson about the influence of his parents, who were both musicians. His father, the saxophonist Cliff Townshend, played in the popular dance band The Squadronaires, but it was his mother Betty, a singer, who was most supportive of Pete's early musical talent. Seeing Bill Haley and The Comets at Edgware Road Odeon in 1956 was another formative moment that introduced the teenage Townshend to the possibilities of a rock 'n' roll performance. Pete also reveals how his art school tutor Roy Ascot, who was head of the Ground Course at Ealing Art School, shaped his his approach to his band that was to become The Who. He also recounts how reading Labyrinths, a book of short stories by Jorge Luis Borges on the first US Who tour in 1967 opened his imagination and helped him expand his musical storytelling. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Pete Townshend - Empty Glass

Rock N Roll Pantheon

By 1980, Pete Townshend was 34 or 35, regarded as a true legend of rock music and a revered songwriter. He was one of the true pied pipers of rock n roll. The only problem was, there was no such thing as a middle-aged rock star. In 1978, the death of Keith Moon hit him hard and put in the question the future of The Who. Punk music was railing against old bands like The Who and while Pete was with them in spirit, he realized that they may have had a point. Meanwhile, Pete was battling alcohol and heroin addictions while his marriage to his first wife was on the rocks. He was looking for spiritual fulfillment and yearning for peace of mind. But out of all that came Empty Glass, a marvelous album with vivid melodies, personal lyrics and Pete Townshend's heart on his sleeve. He dedicated the album to his wife, Karen, and some of the songs could be in her voice. Pete takes on the personality of different people to get his points of view across with lyrics that can be ambiguous but deeply personal. The opening track Rough Boys is seen by some as a coming out for Townshend but it's a rockin' way to kick off a record. The alltime great Let My Love Open The Door is an instant pick me up that outsold the platinum (in the US) Empty Glass several times over and remains a favorite for movie soundtracks aimed at the children of the 1980s. But songs like I Am An Animal and I Moved showcase Pete's softer side before the ranting Jools and Jim aimed at authors who dismissed Keith Moon's death as inevitable and even warranted. Keep On Working shows Pete trying to channel The Kinks and A Little Is Enough may have been a minor hit but Townshend regards it as one of the best songs he's ever written. The title track is a man desperate for his soul to be saved, an empty vessel looking for someone to fulfill him. Would he ever find that peace? Would any of us? It's a strong record with incredible melodies with killer musicians like Simon Phillips, Tony Levin and Pete himself arranging the songs into beautiful classics. This was a fun one to do and if you don't know the album, we think you're gonna like it.
