In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This won't be the last time you hear the Rolling Stones but this is the episode wherein we discuss "The Last Time" from early 1965. After acknowledging the chorus copped from the Staple Singers, we move on to the riff, the riff, the riff! We also note the strange connection to German Oompah music. The second in the parade comes from their producer and manager Andrew Oldham and his Orchestra. Obviously, this is a rearrangement rather than a cover, and obviously, it's infamous in the wake of Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony." It's totally tubular! In '66 to North Carolina's Nomads gave the song the garage treatment and the vocals are snottier and the kick drum is busier! The same year Phil & The Frantics authored a version with strange strangled vocals, an added organ with "Gloria" flourishes and it's the most oompah of all. We break the mold for "Do You Understand Me" by The Jujus, a song which steals the riff but scrambles it a bit - it's a classic! The last word goes the Who, who covered the song in 67 who underplay the riff and focus on Pete Townshend's thundering chords and Keith Moon's wild drumming. Oompah!

In this episode, we explore the life and career of Kenney Jones, the legendary drummer who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of British rock music during the '60s and '70s. From his early days with The Small Faces, through the raucous years with The Faces, to his tenure with The Who, Jones's rhythmic prowess and adaptability made him a sought-after musician in the evolving rock landscape.Born in Whitechapel, London, Kenney Jones grew up immersed in the vibrant music scene of post-war Britain. Influenced by the burgeoning British Invasion, Jones was drawn to the energetic rhythms of bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, as well as the soulful sounds of American R&B. His early exposure to these genres laid the foundation for his distinctive drumming style, characterized by a blend of precision and flair. In 65, Jones co-founded The Small Faces alongside Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, and Jimmy Winston. The band quickly became emblematic of the Mod movement, delivering hits like "Itchycoo Park," "Tin Soldier," and "All or Nothing." Their music, a fusion of psychedelic rock and soulful melodies, resonated with a generation seeking a fresh, dynamic sound.Jones's drumming provided a solid backbone for the band's intricate arrangements. The Small Faces' influence extended beyond their music, impacting fashion and youth culture in '60s Britain. The departure of Steve Marriott in '69 marked a turning point for the band. The remaining members—Jones, Lane, and keyboardist Ian McLagan—joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, both from the Jeff Beck Group, to form The Faces. The Faces quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unpretentious style. Albums like "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse" and "Ooh La La" captured their energetic spirit and musical prowess. Rod Stewart's simultaneous solo career, particularly the success of "Every Picture Tells a Story" and the hit single "Maggie May," brought additional attention to The Faces. However, this dual focus eventually led to tensions within the group. The Faces' blend of rock, soul, and blues, combined with their charismatic stage presence, earned them a devoted fan base. Tracks like "Stay with Me," "Cindy Incidentally," and "Ooh La La" became anthems of the era, showcasing the band's versatility and Jones's dynamic drumming.Despite their success, internal tensions and the members' individual pursuits led to the band's dissolution in '75. In '78, following the death of drummer Keith Moon, Jones was invited to join The Who. His tenure with the band included contributions to albums like Face Dances and It's Hard, as well as performances at significant events such as Live Aid in '85.While his drumming style differed from Moon's, Jones brought a steady, reliable rhythm to the band's music during a period of transition. His professionalism and experience were invaluable assets to The Who during this time.Beyond his musical endeavours, Jones authored an autobiography titled "Let the Good Times Roll: My Life in Small Faces, Faces, and The Who", providing an in-depth look at his life and career. Kenney Jones's contributions to music have been recognised with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both The Small Faces and The Faces. His influence continues to inspire musicians and fans alike, ensuring his legacy endures in the annals of music history.Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Kenney Jones, exploring his impact on British rock music and the enduring legacy of The Small Faces, The Faces, and The Who. By 1980, Pete Townshend was 34 or 35, regarded as a true legend of rock music and a revered songwriter. He was one of the true pied pipers of rock n roll. The only problem was, there was no such thing as a middle-aged rock star. In 1978, the death of Keith Moon hit him hard and put in the question the future of The Who. Punk music was railing against old bands like The Who and while Pete was with them in spirit, he realized that they may have had a point. Meanwhile, Pete was battling alcohol and heroin addictions while his marriage to his first wife was on the rocks. He was looking for spiritual fulfillment and yearning for peace of mind. But out of all that came Empty Glass, a marvelous album with vivid melodies, personal lyrics and Pete Townshend's heart on his sleeve. He dedicated the album to his wife, Karen, and some of the songs could be in her voice. Pete takes on the personality of different people to get his points of view across with lyrics that can be ambiguous but deeply personal. The opening track Rough Boys is seen by some as a coming out for Townshend but it's a rockin' way to kick off a record. The alltime great Let My Love Open The Door is an instant pick me up that outsold the platinum (in the US) Empty Glass several times over and remains a favorite for movie soundtracks aimed at the children of the 1980s. But songs like I Am An Animal and I Moved showcase Pete's softer side before the ranting Jools and Jim aimed at authors who dismissed Keith Moon's death as inevitable and even warranted. Keep On Working shows Pete trying to channel The Kinks and A Little Is Enough may have been a minor hit but Townshend regards it as one of the best songs he's ever written. The title track is a man desperate for his soul to be saved, an empty vessel looking for someone to fulfill him. Would he ever find that peace? Would any of us? It's a strong record with incredible melodies with killer musicians like Simon Phillips, Tony Levin and Pete himself arranging the songs into beautiful classics. In this episode of Talk2TheHand, we dive into the wild and eccentric life of Screaming Lord Sutch, the rock 'n' roll pioneer who became one of Britain's most notorious political pranksters. From his early days fronting the horror-infused rock band The Savages to his countless bids for public office as the leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, Sutch carved out a career that was equal parts music, mischief, and madness. But behind the flamboyant costumes and outlandish policies was a man with a deep love for shaking up the establishment. We'll explore his influence on the British music scene, where he rubbed shoulders with legends like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, and Keith Moon. Despite never landing a chart-topping hit, Sutch's theatrical stage presence and macabre-themed songs left an undeniable mark on rock history. His early performances, featuring coffins, skulls, and bloodcurdling screams, predated the shock-rock antics of Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne by years, making him one of the genre's true pioneers. Of course, no discussion of Lord Sutch would be complete without delving into his political escapades. With policies ranging from mandatory pogo sticks for public transport to opening pubs for 24 hours, his satirical campaigns mocked the rigidness of British politics while endearing him to the public. But was he just a joke candidate, or did his absurdity hold a mirror up to the establishment? We'll examine the legacy of the Monster Raving Loony Party and how its spirit lives on in modern political satire. Beyond the larger-than-life persona, we'll also discuss the struggles that plagued Sutch later in life. Despite his public bravado, he faced personal demons, battling depression and financial difficulties. His tragic death in 1999 shocked fans and left many wondering about the toll of a lifetime spent in the limelight. Was his eccentricity a shield, or was he truly the eternal optimist he portrayed? Join us as we celebrate the highs, the lows, and the sheer lunacy of Screaming Lord Sutch—a man who blurred the lines between rock, politics, and performance art like no other. Whether you know him as the original shock rocker or Britain's most loveable political rebel, this episode is a deep dive into the unforgettable world of one of the UK's greatest cult figures. Have you ever had a Rock & Roll Fantasy? The Kinks did. So did Bad Company. And nobody hated Bad Company more than rock music's Stephen Sondheim. #FireElaineStritch Some Rock & Roll fantasies are quite dangerous, like the troubling, cancel-worthy ones Rick Rubin has about feet. ALLEGEDLY. But others are healthy enough to dream out loud, on, by any reasonable metric, one of America's most acclaimed podcasts. Inspired by an inspiring suggestion from longtime listener, Patreon supporter, and singer/songwriter, Montreal's own Max "Como" Comeau (which translates loosely in ‘Murican to "Max, how"?), Tony and T.J. dare to dream: what would have a Beatles reunion concert been like in the late 1970's? Would George wear his silly stache from his self titled LP? Would Paul arrive on a laconic boat from London Town? Would John bake bread as Yoko verbally assaults Chuck Berry? And would Ringo be sober enough to zug-zug his way from Monte Carlo to the venue? These questions will NOT be answered in this fairly insane excursion in to fantasyland  - you'll thank us for the two drink minimum, folks - but don't fret; neither will these:

Interview with Kevin Shields Of Detention. Detention was one of the first and best bands of the ‘80s New Jersey hardcore punk explosion. Their wonderfully tasteless “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” single became the college radio cult classic of 1983. The song's 97 seconds of primal Ramones-style speed-punk mocked the demise of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, John Belushi, and John Bonham — who “played the drug game and couldn't maintain.” They even foretold the drug-related heart attack of Jim Carroll, famous for “All The People Who Died,” screaming, “What are you waiting for? Do it!” Saving the best for last, “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” raised the obvious question: “Why couldn't it be Barry Manilow?” The Detention story goes back to Central Jersey, to the Shields family home in Hillsborough Township, about 20 minutes from the “culture capital” of New Brunswick. Kevin Shields, the fourth of five sons, grew up listening to his older brothers' sophisticated record collection of hippie music that ranged from Blue Cheer to King Crimson. Kevin recalls: “Early on, I knew that rock ‘n roll was something special. I was fascinated.”  “I enlisted in the Coast Guard when I was 17. I was out on my own. I was always a music guy and realized music was getting stale with Genesis and whatnot. I read all the magazines, and the ads in the back, so I sent money to these labels, and came home with albums like Never Mind the Bollocks and Rocket to Russia, and singles by the Slickee Boys and MX-80 Sound. But the coup d'grace was when we stationed in Alameda and I went wild in San Francisco. I went to the Mabuhay Gardens like three nights a week, seeing all the legendary West Coast bands: DKs, DOA, Black Flag. I got thrashed on the education of seeing live bands.”   When Kevin returned home in 1981, he was inspired to make music. “Detention came about because I decided to be a player not a spectator,” he explains. “The easiest way was to recruit my family, so I turned to my brothers. I bought a bass, but I didn't know how to play it. My brother Paul suggested I get in touch with this guitarist Rodney Matejek. He showed me how to play simply, and within months we started coming up with riffs, and what would become songs came very quickly.”  The band — Kevin, Rodney, frontman Paul Shields, and drummer Daniel Shields — played their first show at Raritan Manor on the Somerville Circle, hosted by a young Matt Pinfield in his first radio DJ gig at WRSU (Rutgers). It was a noisy and chaotic affair, with people rolling on the floor — until police arrived and stopped the mayhem. “We were given 100 bucks, and we promised never to play there again,” Kevin says with a grin.  Kevin offers some backstory: “Rob Roth, god bless his pointed head, he had a vision. He got us into the studio in Roselle Park, and he paid for it. All we had to do was get good recordings of the two songs, including the B-side “El Salvador.” It came out great. My brother Paul certainly had the lungs for the job! Those 500 copies got us gigs and got us a lot of notice.” In 1985, Detention released a self-produced self-titled album before disbanding. Liberty DeVitto has long been recognised as one of the most influential drummers in rock history, renowned for his explosive energy, innovative rhythms, and deep connection to the music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was captivated by drumming at an early age, inspired by legends like Ringo Starr, Dino Danelli, and Keith Moon. Raised in a vibrant, music-loving family, DeVitto honed his craft by playing along to records and developing his signature style—a mix of finesse, power, and an uncanny ability to elevate a song's emotional impact. DeVitto's career reached new heights when he joined Billy Joel's band in 1974, a partnership that spanned over three decades. As Joel's drummer, DeVitto was the driving force behind countless hits, including "Piano Man," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," and "My Life." His intuitive understanding of Joel's songwriting allowed him to craft drum parts that became as iconic as the melodies themselves. Albums like The Stranger, 52nd Street, and Glass Houses showcased his ability to balance technical brilliance with raw emotion, solidifying his place in music history. Beyond Billy Joel, DeVitto has collaborated with a wide range of iconic artists, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, and Karen Carpenter, displaying his versatility and adaptability across genres. He has also performed on numerous studio sessions, further contributing to his impressive discography. In addition to his illustrious career as a sideman, DeVitto formed The Slim Kings, a band that combines classic rock influences with a fresh, modern sound. The Slim Kings have released several critically acclaimed tracks, earning a loyal following for their authentic and energetic performances. He also has The Lords of 52nd St which is the original band behind Billy Joel - a band that has sold more than 150 million records and helped establish Billy Joel's formidable sound. In recent years, DeVitto has shared his incredible journey through his memoir, Liberty: Life, Billy, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The book provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at his life on and off the stage, detailing his childhood in Brooklyn, his experiences with Billy Joel, and his personal struggles and triumphs. It's a testament to his resilience and passion for music. DeVitto continues to be an active presence in the music industry, performing live, recording new music, and mentoring aspiring musicians. His latest project is recording with Studio D'Lux - a supergroup led by keyboardist-vocalist Doug Kistner (Trans-Siberian Orchestra/Blood Sweat & Tears/John Waite). Liberty Devitto is joined by guitarist Jon Herington (Steely Dan), New Brunswick singer Glen Burtnik (Styx), Asbury Park singer Reagan Richards (Williams Honor), bassist Malcolm Gold (Sheryl Crow) and saxophonist Tom Timko (Gloria Estefan).   Liberty remains a vocal advocate for drummers, regularly appearing at drum clinics and industry events to inspire the next generation of percussionists. With a career that spans decades and a legacy that continues to grow, Liberty DeVitto is more than a drummer—he is a cornerstone of modern music, whose beats will echo for generations to come. Liberty joins us this week to share what continues to be an amazing ride through the music industry. A ride he has dedicated his entire life to.

When was the last time I wore orange? InSync! From the first moment to the last, what a glorious, grateful, exuberant lovefest. Narada is as passionate, fun, inviting, and accessible as his music. We talked about his first paper drumkit at 5, how he watched, listened, and learned from his heroes. How the soul sounds of Detroit shaped him, how it's all soul sounds. From his first band at 11 to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which would change his life in all ways… adding prayer. mediation, service, and Narada to his name, gifted by his guru, Sri Chinmoy, thanks to John McLaughlin, and of course, the music, following in Billy Cobham's big footsteps, touring with Jeff Beck, then recording Wired with him, writing “material” for the album, the full circle back to Beck a decade ago and the story behind their masterpiece version of Little Wing. Ah me! How playing transitioned to producing, inspired by Quincy Jones to service other artists, and the superstar women he championed to great heights - Aretha with their Grammy Song of The Year, Freeway of Love, Whitney with their 6 number one hits including their Grammy Winning Album of the Year, Mariah, with musical knowledge to match her musical chops. We talked our friend, Allee Willis, Keith Moon, Ringo, Jaco, Carlos, Sting, Trudy, Stevie, Marvin, Cissy, his last tour with Journey, and how his devotion to his wife and children brought him home. This very morning Narada was up at 6 readying his kids for school and then driving them there. This interview was held early so that he'd be home when they got home. Quite a man. Respect. For a taste of what Narada himself is up to musically, check out his The More I Love My Life https://bfan.link/the-more-i-love-my-life with Sting, Carlos, and Stevie, I can't stop listening! It seems to so sum up this man of grace. And while you're at it, watch this - and tear yourself away, if you can! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9UQbf_VoQI Perfection! Jeff, Narada, and Rhonda, do Jimi proud. This is a man as comfortable with pop, soul, funk, rock, and blues as he is with fusion. Brilliant with them all. INTERVIEW WITH LESLIE CAVENISH (hair cutter to the Beatles and other notable celebrities) ******* Leslie was the Beatles Hairdresser from 1967 to 1975 Leslie Cavendish left school at 15 years old, without any artistic qualifications to become a hairdresser. He worked for the iconic “'60s” hair stylist Vidal Sassoon. Leslie counted many of the stars of the day among his clients — including Keith Moon, Bee Gees, Dave Clark Five, James Hunt, Terry Stamp, Jane Asher, James Taylor and so many more — but the jewel in his career's crown was styling perhaps the four most famous heads of hair in history: The Beatles. ******* Matt and I sit down with Leslie and talk about his wonderful career with Vidal Sassoon.  This career led to his involvement with the Beatles and Apple. Leslie has a wonderful book called "THE CUTTING EDGE - The Story of the Beatles' Hairdresser Who Defined an Era We start the interview talking about Tiffany (the 80s singer) and food. Then we get into his book: - His beginnings about his Uncle who played with Ella Fitzgerald - Collecting 45s (his cousin would send him music from the US) - The differance between a Hair Stylist and a Hair Cutter - Meeting Paul McCartney for the first time at his home on Cavendish Ave. - The day he convinced Paul to cut off all his hair - Almost getting fired for joining Paul and the boys to film the Magical Mystery Tour. - Meeting Jimi Hendrix - Leslie's top 3 Beatles songs (it's hard to pick just 3) Leslie has some great stories from his book but we don't give too much away. 30- The Who -A Quick One  (Reaction Records in the UK and Decca in the U.S ) Released December 9, 1966, Recorded August 30- November -1966 The Who's A Quick One (1966) is the band's second studio album and marks a significant step in their evolution. The album showcases the individual songwriting talents of each member: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, with Townshend emerging as the standout composer. The title track, "A Quick One, While He's Away," is a nine-minute mini-opera that foreshadows Townshend's later work on Tommy and is a clear highlight of the album. Known for its eclectic mix of styles, the album reached No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart but only No. 67 in the U.S. Despite not being universally considered their best work; the album was instrumental in solidifying The Who's reputation as one of the most innovative rock bands of the 1960s. The single "Happy Jack" also saw success, peaking at No. 3 in the UK and No. 24 in the US, marking the band's first significant American chart presence. A Quick One is significant for showcasing the growth of a band that would become one of the most celebrated in rock history. Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Watch at your own peril (https://youtu.be/IIik_o16sro?si=WvmR54QPJ16Qmd6s). Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962.   Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to.

On September 7, 1978, Keith Moon -- the legendary drummer best known for his wildly destructive antics on stage as a member of The Who -- died after overdosing on a drug intended to wean him off alcohol. Although not entirely unexpected, Moon's death sent shockwaves through the music industry and forever altered the trajectory of the band, but he remains one of the most talented and energetic musicians in rock history.

Pete Townshend intended the fifth studio album from The Who to be a science fiction rock opera called “Lifehouse,” as a follow up to the rock opera “Tommy” released in 1969.  After conflicts with their band manager and issues just managing the complexity of what Townshend envisioned the project to be, the rock opera was shelved, and the follow-up was made into a more traditional album entitled Who's Next. The group began recording the album at Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger's house, using the Stones' mobile recording studio, then moved to a more traditional studio in London.  Most of the album is made up of songs originally intended for the Lifehouse project.  Who's Next would see the Who make significant use of synthesizers and other keyboard sounds on this album, making the synthesizers a more integrated part of the songs than on previous albums.  Drummer Keith Moon's style was also more formalized than before, and the overall album was focused on a good sound where previous albums were perhaps tilted toward a sonic projection of the image of the band.Who's Next would contain some of the most iconic songs that the band produced, and retrospectively is considered by many to be the best album The Who ever produced.  The album would reach number 1 on the UK charts, and number 4 on the US charts.Rob brings us this iconic album for today's podcast, and friend of the show Mike Fernandes sits in for Bruce this week.MobileThis lighter song is a celebration of life on the open road.  Roger Daltrey steps aside as Pete Townshend takes over lead vocal duties.  Daltrey actually was not present at the recording of this song, leaving Keith Moon (drums), John Entwistle (bass), and Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards) to record it as a power trio.A BargainOften misconstrued as a love song to a woman, this track actually is about a relationship with God.  It contends that sacrificing everything for a relationship with God is not a sacrifice at all, but a bargain.  Much of Pete Townshend's work is inspired by eastern mysticism.Won't Get Fooled AgainThe last track on the album is an 8 1/2-minute epic.  It was originally intended as a closing number to the "Lifehouse" rock opera.  The lyrics offer a critique of both government and revolutionary change, summarized in the phrase "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."  Townshend was inspired to write this song after chasing Abbie Hoffman off the stage at Woodstock.Baba O'Riley The title of the lead track to the album is a combination of two of Townshend's mentors, Indian spiritualist Meher Baba and American Composer Terry Riley.  The repeated phrase "teenage wasteland" was inspired by Townshend's observations of youths at Woodstock strung out on acid. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Beat Goes On by Sonny & Cher (from the television variety show “Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”)The singing duo Sonny and Cher started this sketch comedy and music show in 1971.  It would run for 3 years until their divorce. STAFF PICKS:Sweet City Woman by The StampedersWayne brings us a banjo-laden hit from a Canadian trio.  The lyrics were inspired by an encounter with a girl with wild eyes who came from the prairie to start life in the big city.  It hit number 8 on the US charts and number 1 in Canada.  It also won a number of Juno awards in 1972.  You may remember it from an episode of "Better Call Saul."Take Me Home, Country Roads by John DenverLynch keeps the banjo hits coming with a signature song from John Denver.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and would become one of four official state songs for West Virginia.  Denver recorded this song in only two hours.Nobody by the Doobie Brothers Mike brings us a lost song from the first album by the Doobie Brothers.  Neither this song nor the album charted when it was released, but it displays a number of riffs and styles which would become staples of Doobie Brothers songs.  It was re-released in 1974 after the group had achieved success, and it reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100.Maggie May by Rod Stewart Rob closes out the staff picks with a hit single off Stewart's third solo album "Every Picture Tells a Story."  The lyrics describe the contradictory feelings of a boy in a relationship with an older woman.  The inspiration was a true encounter Stewart had with a woman at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival.  The song went to number 1 in Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Orchid by Black SabbathWe close out with a surprisingly soft instrumental from an ordinarily more heavy hitting band. Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians.   Some Things That Came Up:  -1:30 Rich saw Matt with Loverboy at The El Paso Coliseum, 1985!  -3:00 Matt broke through the bass drum head!
