Can You Apply Latex Paint over Oil?

On Today's EpisodeWe're (kind of) back at it after being out sick for 2 weeks! On today's show, we'll talk about:Where we've been for the last 2 weeks and whyCan You Paint Latex Over Oil?5 Questions You Should Ask Before Every Home Decorating ProjectWhere We've Been . . . and Why! [00:00 - 03:45]We've been out for a couple of weeks and to help me get a new show together for the week, I'm joined by Dan Altena and Ali Bryde. Both are RepcoLite employees. Dan's the president and has been with the company since 1978. Ali came on board about 1 month ago. I'm glad both could join me so we could get a new show together after a 2 week hiatus. Can You Paint Latex over Oil? [03:45 - 19:00]It's a question that comes up periodically. The short answer is "yes," but there are some things to know:The "Is It Oil or Latex Test"Sometimes it's difficult to tell if the paint on a given surface is oil or latex. Fortunately, there's a simple test that will get you the answer every time. All you need to do is dampen a rag with ammonia and wipe the surface you're testing. If the paint softens slightly or if some of the color comes off on the rag, then it's latex paint. If there's no change to the paint, then it's oil. It's Oil . . . But Is it Lead-Based?If you test the surface and determine that your previous coating is oil-based paint, you can still make the transition to latex. But in order to get great results, you need to do the proper surface preparation. And before we talk about that, we need to quickly mention lead-based paints.Prior to 1978, lead was used in the production of paint. If the surface you're painting was painted in 1978 or earlier, there's a chance lead could be present. The closer you are to 1978, the less likely you are to find lead. The earlier the surface was painted, the likelihood increases. If you're unsure the surface is lead, you can secure a test kit. And, finally, if you determine that the paint you're dealing with is lead-based, you'll want to take different steps than what I'm going to lay out below. Check this link for more info!Whew! It's Just Regular Oil-Based Paint . . . Now What?If you are only dealing with regular oil-based paint, here are the steps to successfully making the shift to latex paint:Wash the surface with a good degreaser (Krud Kutter, Challenger, TSP)Scuff sand with a 180-220 grit sandpaperWipe all the sanding dust off with a damp rag (NOT a tackcloth)Prime with a bonding primer (STIX from Insl-X or QuickSand from RepcoLite)Topcoat with your choice of latex paintsFive Questions to Ask Before Starting A Home Decorating Project [19:00 - 39:07]Making over a space in our home can be a lot of fun. But it can also be daunting! There are a lot of decisions to make, work to accomplish, and (usually) money that needs to be spent. We definitely don't want to make mistakes that cost us time and dollars. To help you move through your next project with confidence, here are 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Start:Question 1: How do I want this space to make me feel?Yes, this is a touchy-feely question. But it's incredibly important. Answering this question helps you make other decisions down the road. So give it some serious thought. What do you want to feel when you enter or spend time in the space you're going to be working in?Are you looking for a cozy and relaxing vibe for a living room? Are you wanting to feel that "Ahhhhhh, I'm home" feeling when you walk into your entry? Are you hoping to create an energized, exciting atmosphere? Or a space that just makes you feel happy? Think about the space. Think about...

Good morning to you. How many of you when you were growing up had somebody that you emulated and said, I want to be like this person? because they did what you wanted to do. They did it really well, and you wanted to be like them. How many of you fell pretty willfully short when it came down to it? My favorite sport is basketball, and when I was growing up, my favorite player was a man by the name of Walk Frazier who played for the New York Knicks in the 70s when they were the world champs; so I wanted to be like Walt Clyde Frazier. Well, number one Walt Clyde Frazier is African American, so that was a challenge for me. He was also very rich and drove a Rolls Royce. That was a challenge for me. I could not run, jump, shoot like him, or play defense like him; but there were a couple things I tried to emulate. One was I always put on his number, so number 10 was everywhere-you know, my shirts. When I played sports, I would try to wear number 10 if possible. Then I tried to keep my cool because Walt would always keep his cool. There could be chaos around him, and Walt would be cool. One time somebody grabbed his jersey and pulled on it. Walt didnt retaliate; he just made his free throws and went on and scored 30 points on the guy. Walt was just the epitome of cool; so as I got into playing in high school and college, I tried to just be cool all the time as far as keeping my cool and composure no matter what the ref called-no matter what other players might do. If you were at church a week or so ago, you found out that Ive not kept that vow beyond that. I tried to be like Walt, but I fell woefully short of that goal. You might say, Well, I wish I could be as cool as Clint Eastwood. I wish I could invest like Warren Buffett. I wish I could dance like this person; sing like that person; draw or paint like this person; act like that person; look like this person; run as fast as or be as strong as, you fill in the blanks with whom that person is in your life. Now if youre a golfer today-do we have any golfers this morning? Anybody like to play golf? A few of you. Now, most golfers today-if you would say, Who would you like to play golf like, their response is probably going to be Tiger Woods right? We have a gentleman that agreed to an interview and told us a little bit about his desire to play golf like Tiger Woods, so were going to watch right now what he has to say as he talks about the player that he emulates the most, so lets listen. [You can view the clip here: http://www.sermonspice.com/product/19156/like-tiger.] What Id like you to do is envision, imagine, that youre a golfer, and imagine that you had an inner Tiger when you played golf; and I have to be careful how I talk here because I dont play golf, so I could easily sound pretty stupid up here. Imagine that youre teeing off and youve got this inner Tiger, but its still you-same body, same personality, and same set of clubs. Its still you but youve got an inner tiger, and you can draw on Tigers experience. When you get ready to hit the shot, youll know what club to use. When you see the lay of the green, you can find out what angle to hit the ball and how to compensate for the wind. When you get in a sand trap, [you can think], What club should I use to get out of this, and how should I angle my swing? When Im puting, how do I adjust my shot to the lay of the green? Using his knowledge and using his wisdom and drawing from them, how many of you think if you had an inner Tiger, if you play golf-even though it was still you, that you would be a better golfer if you could call on his experience and wisdom? A few of you do. You would be-take my word for it-you would be a better golfer. You would have wisdom and discernment. You could use his knowledge for technique and all of that if you had in inner Tiger. The bad news is you dont have an inner Tiger if you play golf. The good news is that if you today have put your faith and trust in the living God, through the Lord Jesus Christ, you have the Holy Spirit inside of you. The Holy Spirit, Jesus says in John 14, will be with you, and He will be in you-in you. He said, I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you; so if we have the Holy Spirit, we have the presence of Christ in our lives. Whats more? In 1 Corinthians 2:16, Paul says that we have the mind of Christ-the mind of Christ-if you are in Christ today. How many times do we start our day-we walk out and we dont know what sand traps lie ahead of us? We dont know what challenges [are coming]. Is it going to be a great day today, or are there going to be a lot of challenges that were going to face? We start that day and we dont call upon the Lord for His wisdom; we dont call upon Him for discernment; we dont call upon Him for direction; we dont call upon Him for strength. We simply go out and just hack away at the day. It makes about as much sense as if you were playing golf and had an inner Tiger and didnt utilize it, didnt talk to him, didnt take advantage of his years of experience and his knowledge of the game. Were going to talk this morning about having the Holy Spirit in this whole process that we call sanctification. We are still in our series on Ephesians, and we will get there this morning. I promise you we will open up Ephesians, but we have a little ground to cover. Were going to kind of take that path that we saw for the golf ball to get there (from the clip). Salvation-deliverance-is something that happens to us instantaneously. The moment you put your faith, trust and hope in Jesus Christ, the Bible says, Your sins are forgiven, and the penalty of sin, which is death, has been removed, because it was placed upon Christ; so that is complete. There is nothing you can add to it or take away from it; it is complete. However the process of salvation or of sanctification is a fancy word… Sometimes we say discipleship or becoming spiritually mature; however you want to phrase it, that is a lifelong process and very much a partnership. A cooperative effort between the work of God in our lives and our effort, our will, our energies-working toward the common goal of becoming like Christ. Now I said how many of you have somebody you emulate, somebody you desire to be like, and hands went up. I would hope that if I were to say the same thing, How many of you would seek to be like Jesus? hands would go up. We would all say, Well, Id love to be like the Lord. God wants you to be like Him too. He has given you His spirit to work within your life, to bring about that very goal; but it is a process. It is not simply us sitting back and saying, Okay, God, Ive received Your Son. By faith, make me like You. And then youd wait. Nor is it God being a spectator while you work really hard, and He just kind of watches. The Bible says, It is a team effort. The Book of Philippians 2 talks about that very thing. We see in Philippians 2 the will of man and the will of God both working in harmony towards a common goal. Verse 12 of Philippians 2, (page 1162 of pew Bibles), Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling… Notice he doesnt say, Work for your salvation. He says, Work out your salvation. You are saved. Its something you possess; its something you have. However, there is still much to do. We still very much live in our flesh. We still live in a fallen world, and theres still a tempter; so we have opposition. We have an inner struggle, an inner conflict; so there are things we must work out. He says to do so with fear and trembling. That means to do so with a somber attitude; realize that theres much to be done, and we have to take that seriously. Its not going to just happen without our effort or cooperation. Verse 13 says, …for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. So God is our partner, and God is working in us. Now in the Bible, the word work looks to be the same in Verse 12 and Verse 13; but in the Greek its a different word. The first word work in Verse 12 means to work on something, like if youre working on a project. Maybe Im going to repair something or fix something. You might say, Well, Im going to work on the house today. Im going to work in the garage today. Im going to work on the car today. Its that word work. It means to put forth the energy, to put forth an effort, to be diligent in a goal. That's the first word work. The work that is used of God is a different word in Verse 13 where it says, …for it is God who works in you… Its the word energeo. What does that sound like? Energy, right? Its the word we get energy from. It means to energize, to provide the spark, to provide the charge, to add something that we cannot do ourselves; so it says God provides the energy, the strength-even the goal itself comes from Him, to carry out this mission of Christ-likeness. I went into the boiler room, and I got a chemical here. Its called Krud Kutter. Somebody from our church purchased this at one time. Now when they bought it, it was like this. It was done. The mix was complete. They didnt have to add to it or take away from it. When they bought Krud Kutter, it was ready to use. They didnt have to go into a laboratory, put all these chemicals together, mix them all up, risk blowing things up or causing a fire or something, killing themselves. They bought it ready to go. They didnt have to experiment to get the chemicals just right. Krud Kutter came just the way it is, and so it is with our salvation. Our salvation comes to us complete. Theres nothing we can add to it, nothing we can take away from it. The wonderful thing is it was purchased for us. God purchased your salvation. You didnt purchase it. It is the gift of God. Its not something you work for or earn. It is the gift of God. Now lets say I have some crud. I have a stain. The way Krud Kutter works is Ive got a stain on my table that I just happen to really have a stain, believe it or not, for real up here. Now the way I think it works is you just take this bottle of Krud Kutter, and you place it on the crud like that; and that should do it, right? Isnt that all you have to do? No. That's not how it works, is it? I lift this up, and its still on there. What do I have to do? I have to number one, apply the Krud Kutter and squirt it out. There it is. Now what happens? Is that all I have to do? I just apply it on there, and its done. Is that right? No. What I do is I let it work a little bit, right? It starts to bubble and it starts to work. It works at this molecular level. It starts to break down these bonds and the chemical reactions are going on-stuff that I dont understand is happening at the very fiber of that stain, the very core of that stain. Its starting to dissolve and break down. Its starting to do for me what I cannot do myself, and that is to break down and remove that stain. Then once it is broken down, then I have something to do, dont I? I have to put in some elbow grease, and I have to actually take a rag or towel and begin to wipe that away. I maybe have to even put a little effort behind that. Now some stains come off really easily, and some stains are really hard. Some stains I have to work at for a while. I might need to use Krud Kutter a second or a third time to really get that stain off. Now Im not endorsing Krud Kutter. I dont know about this product. I would consider endorsing them if they paid me, even if it doesnt work; so you work on that. How many of you have some crud in your lives right now? Yeah, boy, what a messy group this morning. Youve got some crud on your soul, right? So salvation is complete, but we must apply that salvation; and we do that by faith. Now heres the good news. The good news is because the Spirit of God lives in you, and theres nothing greater than the Spirit of God. Theres nothing that is too great for the power of God to remove. If you have decided that this is not something you want in your life-this crud, this sin-this stain is not something you want, and you put your effort behind that, cooperate with the Holy Spirit, you acknowledge that sin, and you repent of that sin… Repentance means to say the same thing that God says about sin. You repent of it. Ask God to remove it. Heres the good news. It doesnt stand a chance. If theres sin in the life of the believer, its not because God is incapable of removing it. Its because you dont want it removed. I promise you if you want it removed-and youre serious about wanting it removed-and you apply Gods grace to that area and then with your own effort as you work on it, God works in and through to begin to dissolve, break it down and remove it from your life. Jesus said, The Son of Man has come that you might be free. That's the wonderful news. What Paul is saying here that were going to read in Ephesians 4 is not a self-help kind of a manual. Its not Paul saying, Look, you need to remove this. You need to remove that. You need to remove this, because hes going to be talking about removing crud as we will see in Ephesians 4. Its not Paul being a motivational speaker and saying, Okay, guys, you can do it! You know, just try harder. Just do more! Just work at it more diligently, and you can remove all these things from your lives! Pauls not saying that. Look at Verse 25 of Ephesians 4 (page 1158 of pre Bibles). Ephesians 4:25 begins with the word therefore. Whenever you see the word therefore, you need to find out what it is there for. Why did he say therefore? He said, Therefore each of you must put off… Hes going to start talking about crud removal here. Its therefore because of Verse 23 that Verse 25 can be a reality. What does Verse 32 say? …to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Paul is saying being aware of the presence of God; acknowledging the presence of God; inviting God to work; inviting God to energize you; inviting God to use His power and His grace in your life and apply it to that crud-to remove that crud. That is what the Word of God is saying. Therefore because of this, its not just simply your willpower. Its not simply your effort. Its because you have God living inside of you and the person of the Holy Spirit that enables you to carry this out. If youve never committed your life to Christ and you do not have the Holy Spirit, friends, you are in this struggle on your own. You are doing it in your flesh of your own strength and your own might, and its probably not working very well. In fact, I know its not working well. Youre tripping on the same rock over and over and over again. Its like that guy on the golf course. He has the inner Tiger Woods, but he fails to acknowledge him. She fails to ask for direction and discernment in leadership and just goes ahead, plays the course and hacks away with her own wisdom, strength and might; and it doesnt work out. The Lord wants to partner with you to bring about this Christ-likeness in your life. Now were going to read through the list, and youre going to see some crud thats in your life. I promise you. As we read through this list, youre going to identify and say, Oh, yeah, that, thats me. Yeah, Im dealing with that. Now youre not dealing with the whole list, but youre going to be able to identify with some of them. Verse 25, Therefore each of you must put of falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. The first thing he deals with is the issue of honesty and honesty in the way we speak. He says if you struggle with that-if you dont speak truthfully, maybe you tell outright lies or white lies or you exaggerate-he says you need to speak the truth. Maybe you withhold information. Whatever it is, speak truthfully to one another because we belong to Christ, because the Spirit of God is working within us, we can put off deceit. We can learn to speak truthfully to each other. In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry… Some of you have problems with anger, your emotions, and rage; and the Word of God deals with that. He says, Listen, you can get those emotions in check. Jesus was always under control, wasnt He? You never see Jesus in a hurry. You never see Him out of control, but the Spirit of the living God resides within you. You can bring those emotions into check. If you dont, Paul reminds us that it gives the enemy an opportunity. He will use anger. He will use rage. He says, …do not give the devil a foothold, Verse 27. He will use that anger against us. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, and must work, doing something useful with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with those in need. You can rob from your employer in a lot of ways. You cannot do your job when nobody is looking, take some time off and do some other things. You can take from your employer in a lot of different ways. You can steal from the government with your taxes. You can steal from God. There are a lot of ways you can steal. You dont just have to rob a bank to steal, friends. You can steal in a lot of different ways. He said, With the Spirit of God working in us, we become generous instead of selfish, giving instead of hoarding. Verse 29, Do not let unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. What does unwholesome talk mean? Hes talking about words that are the opposite of words that build up, words that edify. Unwholesome words means words that are corrupt, words that tear down. They can be outright ridicule, or it can be something more subtle-gossip is words that tear down. When you malign someones character, those are words that tear down. He said, …so out of your mouth should come words that build up. If out of your mouth come words that are retaliatory, words that are vengeful, words that are meant to hurt, retaliation always leads to escalation. Keep that in mind. Retaliation always leads to escalation. He says, What should come out of your mouth are words that lead to reconciliation, words that lead to peace, words that lead to a solution because the Spirit of God is in you, the words that come out of your mouth can be words that edify and build up. Notice Paul is dealing with every aspect of the human existence. Hes talking about our lives ethically; hes talking about our lives morally; emotionally; physically; socially-every aspect of our experience, Paul is dealing with here. [Verse 30], And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. He says when were working against what the Spirit of God is doing in our lives, we grieve the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an it. The Holy Spirit is not a force. The Holy Spirit is a person, the person of the Holy Spirit. Have you ever tried to help somebody, and they work against you? Maybe youve been trying to give advice to a child because you see the direction theyre going or a student, and they actually go the opposite way. Maybe its a spouse; maybe its a co-worker, and youre sharing something thats helpful. Instead of listening to you and doing what you say, theyre doing the exact opposite; and you know it leads to destruction. What does it cause you? Grief. It causes you grief, and you go, Ugh! You just shake your head and you go, I guess theyre going to have to learn the hard way. That says we grieve the Holy Spirit. There are times in your life when the Holy Spirit has said, Man… I dont know if the Holy Spirit actually says man, but Hes grieved (congregation laughing). Paul says, Dont grieve the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is working with you. Its like that inner Tiger we talked about-the inner Tiger Woods-if you had it on the golf course-and he says, Make sure you grab your nine iron on this shot, and you grab your putter. You hack away at the ball, and it goes terrible. Your inner Tiger goes, Ahh! What are you doing? Why dont you listen? …do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Because the Holy Spirit is inside of you-through the Holy Spirit-we receive forgiveness. Weve received pardon and redemption. Because that Spirit is in you, youve become forgiving. Youve become people of grace. Youve become people who release debt. You dont become people who hold a grudge because what happens is that anger, bitterness, and resentment will eat you up inside. You have to release that. Did you ever see the documentary, Super Size Me? It was about the guy who lived on McDonalds. Did you see that? Now McDonalds is okay. I like to go to McDonalds from time to time, but this guy lived on Big Macs and French fries day after day, three meals a day, week after week; he lived on McDonalds. He kept going to the doctor getting physicals. The stuff was killing him. It was killing him! It was turning his insides to mush. He said, Its not meant to be lived on. The grease, the salt, and the fat and all that, its going to hurt your pipes here. Paul is saying, Listen, if you harbor unforgiveness, resentment, bitterness. Its going to kill you slowly. Have you ever met a person who refuses to forgive, holds on to resentments and grudges for long enough? What does it do? It taints their whole world. It makes him a very unpleasant person to be around because theyre just consumed by this anger and this hatred. Paul says, You dont want to be like that. You dont need to be like that as a child of God. As God has forgiven you, you need to forgive. Its a decision you make by the grace and the help of God to get rid of that crud thats in your life. Now you said you have some crud in your life, and I believe you because I do too. Ive got crud. Were going to ask the Lord, and were going to say, Lord, you are the ultimate crud cutter. We want to apply our faith. We want to apply Your grace to that area of our lives. We commit, and its not just this prayer that were going to pray in a moment. Its not just that. Its committing yourself, your energy, your will as He supplies. Remember what God does? When we work on, He works in and through-dissolving, breaking apart; it is a process. It is a struggle that is our work, our efforts, but its also the Holy Spirit who is energizing us, helping us, and assisting us; and I want to tell you, church, I want to reiterate and say it again; if you are sick and tired of being sick and tired of an area of your life, you bring that to the cross this morning. Were going to ask for the help and strength of the Holy Spirit. Were going to ask that He would begin to dissolve and break that down, so as you work on it, you can start to see it improve and pretty soon see it removed. Thats good news. The bad news is theres always going to be a project to work on. Have you ever noticed that with your house? You get one thing done, but theres always something else to work on. It just never ends. So it is in our lives. Maybe youre working on anger issues; maybe youre working on forgiveness issues; maybe youre working on mouth/word issues; maybe youre working on honesty issues. Whatever it is, when you start to get a handle on something, theres going to be another area that needs your attention; but lets identify that area this morning. What is the biggest stain right now in your soul? Where is the most gunk and crud piled up? Thats what we want to identify as we pray and seek for Gods help in that area. Would you bow your heads with me in prayer? My first prayer this morning is for those of you who have never received or trusted in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and youre on this battle on your own. I want to pray for you this morning. Father, I pray today for those whove not received Christ, that they would put their faith and trust in You, that they might receive Your Spirit. I pray that they would pray this prayer with me: Heavenly Father, I come to You today in Jesus name. I confess my sin before You. I have done what is wrong. Ive done what is evil in Your sight, and I ask today for Your forgiveness. I pray that the Holy Spirit would come inside of me, energize me and empower me to live a right life. I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, that He died on the cross for my sin, and that He rose again and conquered the grave. Because He lives, I shall live. I invite Him into my life. I want to partner with the Lord from here on out. In Jesus name, forgive my sins. Save my soul. If you prayed that prayer this morning, God has answered that prayer, and youve begun a spiritual journey. We focus our attention now on that journey. Lord, around this room today, we are a room today full of people with weaknesses and shortcomings. Lord, there have been times in our lives when we have rebelled against You and rebelled against Your commands. There are areas that we need to fix. There are areas we need to work on, but we know that we cannot do it of our own strength and mind. We cannot fix our heart spiritually any more than we can fix our heart physically. The greatest heart surgeon in the world cannot operate on his own heart. He needs outside intervention, and we need Your help and Your intervention. As I pray this prayer, I want You to focus on that crud. I want You to name that crud. Lord, I ask for Your forgiveness today. Confess that to Him all around the room today. All those who are listening, confess that sin to Him-that lust, the greed, the pride. Confess that act; confess those words; confess that omission. Lord, Your Word says Youre not only just to forgive us our sins, but to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. By faith we ask that through Your Holy Spirit, You would work in our hearts and lives to remove the sin, remove the stain, and remove the crud from our souls-that we might be cleansed. We want to partner with You. We want to put forth our effort, our thought processes, and our will to see that happen. Lord, were believing You for great things today in our hearts and lives. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
