Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: July 23, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS9: E2 - Mary Kutter - From Bootlegging to NashvilleSHOW SUMMARY:What does it take to stand out in the crowded Nashville music scene? For Mary Kutter, it's about being the splash of red paint on a wall of white—creating music that cuts through the noise with authenticity and purpose. Born and raised just outside the Bourbon Capital of the World in Springfield, Kentucky, Mary's journey to Nashville began with an unexpected opportunity hosting a radio variety show. This serendipitous break led to a life-changing connection with legendary songwriter Kim Williams, who recognized something special in the young artist and opened doors that would transform her career. As Mary shares, "That job offer changed my life." When the pandemic shut down the music industry in 2020, Mary faced a pivotal moment. Rather than stepping back, she doubled down on her craft, writing seven days a week, two to three sessions daily, for nearly two years straight. This relentless work ethic yielded her first gold record and substantial placements in movies and commercials—all created through Zoom sessions with collaborators she couldn't meet in person. What truly distinguishes Mary's artistry is her willingness to explore complex, personal narratives. Her viral hit "Devil Wore a Lab Coat" confronts the pharmaceutical industry's role in the opioid epidemic that devastated her Kentucky hometown. "Devil's Money" tells the remarkable true story of her bootlegger great-grandfather who used his illicit earnings to build a church. These songs resonate deeply because they speak truth, regardless of commercial appeal. From unexpected collaborations with rapper Project Pat to her disciplined creative routine beginning at 5 AM daily, Mary embodies the modern artist who forges her own path. Her approach to songwriting combines raw authenticity with strategic savvy, sharing snippets on social media that connect so deeply with fans they're singing unreleased verses at her shows. As Mary prepares for headline performances, festival appearances, and new music releases, her advice to aspiring artists remains straightforward: "Put your blinders on and keep the pedal down." Through every challenge and triumph, she's remained true to herself—creating music that matters and leaving an indelible mark on the Nashville landscape, one honest song at a time. With Connor Wong as the only experienced catcher on the roster, Herrera helps with the defensive liabilities Wong provides, but Wong may have to be included to make the deal happen. This week I am joined by Dr. Kutter Callaway for a special spooky edition of the podcast. Kutter recently released a high-quality podcast called "Be Afraid". His podcast takes you on a journey into the heart of one of the most popular genres of contemporary film and television: horror. Each episode discusses the nature of our fears and why we just can't seem to look away from the things that terrify us. The show features interviews with major Hollywood filmmakers, well-known film critics, leading psychologists, and even a few exorcists. This podcast isn't about how to avoid fear, how to leverage it, or even whether it's okay to be afraid. Instead, it's an exercise in learning how to fear rightly. Kutter and I take a deep dive into the show, discuss our own fears, wrestle with our own demons, and attempt to learn how to fear well. Enjoy! Literally have no idea what to put for the description of this episode. It was *that* unhinged. Sox take two of three from Minnesota, Casas hits three homers in a game, Kutter pitched extremely well in Game 3 to help secure the series win. With six games left, Boston has to go 4-2 to finish above .500 for the first time since 2021. Make sure to follow us on Twitter, @ThePeskyReport. Matt and Jordan break down this long series against the blue jays. Lots of sox trivia talk in this one, Bello and Kutter were good, but the offense (other then Duran) is sputtering. Theres alot of other talk about the playoff chances, and the upcoming schedule. As well as guessing who has Saves this year and talking about which teams have it worse then we do. The Red Sox swept the Pirates with a Triple-A lineup and Triston Casas got hurt. We're talking about how the Red Sox continue to win games (on the road) despite getting bad injury news almost daily. We had Bello's best start of the year, Kutter getting out of jams and going 6 innings, Wilyer Abreu on fire, and a hilarious call from Joe Castig on the radio broadcast. We also talk about the extended rest for Masataka Yoshida and try to figure out why he wasn't in the lineup for the finale. Also: John Sterling's retirement gift, Kenley Jansen on the pitch clock, and a preview of this week's series. Thanks for listening and we'll see you after the Guardians series! This week on Be Afraid, we move from toys that come alive when we're not looking to dolls who are possessed by Satan himself. Along the way, we think about all the footage we're creating every day on our smartphones and social media feeds, and how that might very well be documenting the horrors that constantly surrounds us. We also create some found footage of our own… For video footage of Kutter, Kenneth, and Stephen's experience in the Blue House: https://www.kuttercallaway.com/podcast For show notes and more, click here. This week on Be Afraid, we take a lighthearted jaunt through a number of kids' movies, exploring how they so often use tropes taken directly from the horror genre in order to tell compelling stories. And much to Kutter's chagrin, we also talk a bit about why dolls and toys are so incredibly creepy. Joining us this week: Pete Docter is a filmmaker, animator, and voice actor. He is the chief creative officer of Pixar Animation Studios. Tony Hale is an actor and producer known for a variety of roles, including Buster Bluth from Arrested Development, Forky from Toy Story 4, and Gary Walsh from Veep. He is also a craftsman who creates bespoke rope bowls for friends and family. Justin Barrett is the president and founder of Blueprint 1543. A leading cognitive psychologist, Dr. Barrett is the author of Born Believers and, more recently, Thriving with Stone Age Minds. “Be Afraid” is a production of Christianity Today, Fuller Seminary, and Uncommon Voices Collective Executive Producer: Erik Petrik Producer, Writer, and Editor: Kutter Callaway Producer, Editor, Graphic Design: Stephen Scheidler Producer: TJ Hester Music: Jeremy Hunt and Qoheleth More from Kutter Callaway on theology and culture: https://www.kuttercallaway.com/ More from Uncommon Voices Collective: https://www.uncommonvoices.faith/ More from Qoheleth: https://qohelethnoise.bandcamp.com Learn more about your ad choices. 116 Deadly Harvest – With Kevin Behr In Appalachian Ohio and beyond, ginseng hunting is a centuries-old tradition. Prized for its medicinal value and prestige, American ginseng was one of America's first exports to the Far East. Today, highly regulated but harvested to near extinction, its value has only increased, setting the stage for a black market that often results in arrests, prison time, and tragedy.
