When it comes to EVs, people seem to embrace one of two schools of thought. In school one, electric vehicles may have a role to play but that role is limited. Manufacturers should not be required to build them. And citizens should not be required to pay taxes to subsidize purchase of EVs. In school two, the belief is that electric vehicles are, without a doubt, the future. By 2040 the vast majority of all new vehicles will be propelled by motors driven with energy from batteries. Which school has it right? Enter our special guest today, Mike Colias, author of a tremendous new book called InEVitable: Inside the Messy Unstoppable Transition to Electrics. Mr. Colias has covered the automotive business for the Wall Street Journal for more than ten years. In this episode he gives us a view on what makes building EVs and batteries so hard for the Detroit Three. Who among the Detroit Three is doing the best job? Who is falling behind? And how might America's commitment to EVs change under the Trump Administration?

Alright, so there are a few things on your plate today that may involve the fate of America, but the Garage Hour is nothing if not distracting (with all the cars, trucks, beers, guns, parts, fixing, kerplosions and awesomeness) - let us help you escape, if just for a minute: lithium battery fires don't just kill people, they kill fire departments, household spies hiding in your vacuum, how diamond mines can tell you about cars and trucks being stored instead of sold, and how Kalifornistan keeps taking steps to kill itself. There's also some Hunter S. Thompson goodness, the human body (and why some more efficiency would be good), coyotes versus dogs (and their poop!), and a brief history of commies in government. Now go vote.

For decades, oil and gas were really the only choice for transportation and energy - heat, etc but it appears to be changing to a scenario where oil and gas are in a competition with electrics, hydrogen and sustainable combustion fuels (SCF). In this episode, we hear from Andre Mech Environmental Engineer who has been a climate change proponent for the past 30 years. Andre was first on Stephen Armstrong's Innovation / Career Buzz Show in January 2020 - "Disruption in the Global Auto Industry” and again in 2021 “Green is Taking off”. Andre works in the areas of electrical generation, emission reduction, energy efficiency project evaluation, project development, finance, management, verification, including carbon offset generation activities to minimizing climate change. He has direct experience with carbon related planning in the commercial institutional building sector, transportation sector and combined heat and power sector. He is a regular speaker at national and international energy conferences. He holds a BEng Mech Eng from the Royal Military College Canada and an MBA from Western University.

While many major car manufacturers rushed headlong into the electric vehicle (EV) market to mixed results, the Japanese automaker, Toyota, adopted a more conservative approach. A focus on hybrids over full electric vehicles, saw them weather what other companies are increasingly recognizing as a tumultuous entry into the EV sector. Following the trepidation of the previous CEO, Akio Toyoda, who eloquently conveyed that transition to EVs would take 'longer than media anticipates,' the company is now poised to reap the financial benefits. Striking a careful balance between innovation and consumer acceptance, Toyota's strategy seems to be paying off, despite the contradictory environmental narratives. Toyota has reported impressive statistics for 2023, riding a wave of strong hybrid vehicle sales. This sustained strategy is projected to yield over $30 billion in net profits for the fiscal year concluding in March. Over time, Toyota's resolve has been bolstered by the struggles of its competitors, some of whom are dealing with substantial losses on their EV product lines. This suggests that Toyota's conservative approach may be more in line with market realities than the strategies adopted by other manufacturers. The company has exhibited a remarkable 6.6% uptick in sales for 2023, compared to the previous year. According to data from InsideEVs, this success can be attributed in part to its hybrid models. In the U.S., Toyota's sales include nearly 15,000 pure EVs, 40,000 plug-in hybrids, and over 600,000 non-rechargeable hybrids. These figures testify to the consumer acceptance of Toyota's balanced portfolio of products. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Esperanza and Irwin have a special visit with Charlie Tupper. The Tupper's presence at Towd Point started in the early 1920's. Charlie's grandfather (Frank Edwin Tupper) bought the property on Davis Creek in about 1917 or 1918. The land reminded him of his native Nova Scotia. When he bought it, the property cost $7500. The house, initially called "Ramblers Cottage" for the rambling roses growing along side, was built in about 1907, along with several other large "cottages" along the bluff on Davis Creek overlooking Little Peconic Bay. The house had a large master bedroom on the first floor off the living room and seven bedrooms on the second floor. It was a summer home so it wasn't heated or insulated. There was a huge fireplace in the living room. Electrics were from a battery-system (no idea how they charged the batteries, probably with a gas-driven generator), there was a small "battery house" behind the barn that was about 200 feet behind the main house, there was also a small 2 bedroom quarters for "servant staff". Some very early photos have the small servant house just behind the main house, but at some point it was moved back and attached to the barn and a 2 car garage with a small storage room was put behind the main house. The barn itself had 2 stables and an area to store a carriage or two and a large workbench, an upstairs with one finished off room and a big open area. Somewhere along the way (1930s or early 1940s), he built 3 cottages for rentals to the west of the main house on Davis Creek. Each cottage had a name. "Love in a Mist", then "Marshitern" and last "Flower House". Love in a Mist and Flower house were prefabs with Flower House being a present he bought for my grandmother from the NY Flower Show. Marshitern was a typical summer cottage assembled on cedar pilings right on Davis Creek. The houses were typically rented, like all summer houses, Memorial Day to Labor Day ... I seem to recall they went for about $1500 a season. A lot of the renters were repeat renters. Love in a Mist was rented in the late 50s by Southampton Insurance man Maurice Cunningham, his office was on Main Street. These 3 houses still exist and are extensively renovated and modernized. The main house was eventually called just "The Ramblers" but as kids, we called it "The Big House". Charlie regaled us with stories of growing up here, too numerous for this space. A not to be missed podcast. Special thanks to Artist and Friend Casey Chalem Anderson, whose series of paintings of Towd Point were a source of inspiration for this episode.
Fritz Banks got started as a Page at Paramount where he met his longtime friend, on and off set, Spoon. Their early creative collaborations lead to Fritz building a career as a Set Lighting Technician working on well know TV sitcoms such as Tool Time and Girlfriends. Fritz shares his path in the business, his knowledge of his craft, and some of the hazards those formerly known as "Electrics" must avoid when 75 feet in the air and operating a condor.
Tesla and BYD steal the headlines as they race for global leadership in battery electric vehicles. But on the near horizon there is another technology that delivers zero emissions: hydrogen fuel cells. General Motors has been developing fuel cell solutions for more than 20 years. They are doing important pilot testing of fuel cell applications for Class 8 trucks, with the US military on battlefield applications and in mobile charging units. My guest this week, Charlie Freese, is an expert on all vehicle propulsion systems and is currently focused on hydrogen. In our conversation, I ask Charlie what he drives to work every day, how soon he sees himself behind the wheel of a vehicle powered by fuel cells and where hydrogen fuel cells are a better solution than battery electric vehicles.

Drive the streets of San Diego and it will feel like the whole world is going electric. Here is a Tesla Model 3. There is a Hyundai Ioniq 5. Look at that Lucid Air. Or that cyber orange Mach E. WIOD National Correspondent Erin Real *Follow her on Twitter: @ErinAdeReal1. Even with the high price of gasoline – electric cars are still too expensive for many drivers.
In this Saturday morning's edition of DriveTime Radio, New York Vinnie opens up by debunking the myth that electric cars won't work in the cold. Then, he dives into the car selling business and talks about the benefits of standardized vehicle list prices. Plus, a history of traffic lights and Vinnie's experience driving a batmobile. This week, Vinnie drives the 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid. Listen to the Car Tune "Traffic Lights" by Sara Kays here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57stBn4tbeA
These two episodes from May almost took a long walk off a short hard drive, but thanks to doing stuff with our brains, hereyago: Tesla's legacy issues with batteries and taxpayers, electric cars (replacement or runabout?), chicks from Georgia parking on the tracks (and the return of the bodycount conundrum), committing auto theft with a Ford, a big foot and cheap tech, two-step security and the old-school LS400 fob, "I, Robot", plus a drive-by from the Air Force Thunderbirds and one Commander "Slappy". There's more goodness: Desert Sessions and the gang - Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, K.D. Lang, Screaming Trees and "Girl Boy Tom", plus Frankenstein Big Bird.

Toyota is charting its own course as the industry moves into a new, electrified era, and no one is more in touch with those plans than Cooper Ericksen, the company's Senior Vice President, Product, BEV and Mobility Planning and Strategy. Ericksen is our special guest this week. And Host Jack Nerad will question him about Toyota's introduction of battery-electric vehicles as many of its competitors go all in. Chastized by some for being too slow to adopt BEVs, Ericksen will describe Toyota's philosophy on net-zero carbon emissions that defies the critics. As he told us, the Toyota bZ4X is just the first of a long string of BEVs that Toyota and Lexus will launch in the next several years. At the same time reaching net-zero isn't as simple as shutting the door on internal combustion engine vehicles, Ericksen said. In the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad discusses the 2022 Kia Seltos small crossover SUV. Little crossovers don't get much respect from auto critics, but Nerad found the Turbo Nightfall Edition to be far more involving than most have a right to expect. With 175-horsepower on tap and black trim all around, the Seltos Turbo Nightfall packs a lot of fun into a small but useful package. Also in the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague shares his opinions on the 2022 Toyota Camry. Once regarded as the automotive equivalent of mayonnaise, the Camry has gotten much more tart and tasty lately. Teague will tell us how. In the news this week we ask the question: Will limited availability of raw materials sink battery electric vehicle sales in the future? Experts say that the current oil shortage might be child's play compared to a possible shortage of lithium and other key minerals involved in the production of vehicle batteries. We'll have the details and our reactions to that. Also in the news, fresh details have surfaced on the proposed Apple car. After lying low for years, Apple seems to have rejuvenated its effort to create a self-driving electric vehicle. We'll give you the details on that and our thoughts as well.

When you bring in others to help you, you allow yourself the space to serve your clients the best you can. If you don't know yourself well enough and how you'll work with others, it's virtually impossible to lead yourself anywhere. Map out your client's total experience from first touch point to the last connection. At 3-5 touch points with your clients along the journey, add some gifts, some added personal touches to elevate their experience and create a raving fan for your business. Ideas without action are worthless. Your clients deserve more than just a digital experience with their photos. Albums and prints will serve them far longer. No doesn't mean no, it means convince me. If your clients don't want albums, then you probably haven't educated them and shared the value in those albums. People cannot buy what they do not exist. Erica and Jon Hayes are a husband a wife branding photography duo based out of Phoenix, AZ. They work with big brands, small brands, and personal brands by creating brand content that represents them and their ideal clients well. When planning for a branding session, you need to know not only your client (the brand) but also your client's client. By identifying their ideal client, you can then create photos that will resonate with them and bring more value to Your client. In order to take pictures that will sell for your branding clients, you need to understand what common misconceptions their potential clients have about their brand. Preparing for your branding session by understanding the brand, their goals for the photos, how they will be used, and creating a shot list will make the shoot much smoother and streamlined. Not to mention, positioning yourself as a professional. Having a shot list set before the session will allow you to step completely into the creative space instead of constantly thinking about the next shot. Entrepreneurship is rollercoaster. The only ones who get hurt are the ones that try to get off the ride. The ups and downs of business can be scary, but if you hold on and push forward during the ride down, the odds are you'll be going up another hill soon.
