Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket pays Al a visit to talk about Dirty Projectors' ninth and most recent album, Lamp Lit Prose. Glen explains why he loves this album, what lessons he takes from it for his own work and what's in store for him in the studio and on the road. He also talks about other artists he admires, other albums he thought about discussing here and a past project of his that Al just discovered.Al's notes:As I mentioned on this episode, Glen was Brian Koppelman's guest on his podcast, The Moment, several years ago. It's a great conversation, and they get deeper into Glen's career than he and I did on this podcast. Check it out here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/glen-phillips-9-6-16/id814550071?i=1000519286763Glen made reference to “the Bob Schneider songwriting game.” I admit I had to look this up after recording the episode. Glen described it well here, but if you want to know more about it, this article is a good place to start. https://www.npr.org/2013/11/24/246755925/for-a-few-musicians-beating-songwriters-block-is-all-in-the-gameWebsites:http://www.glenphillips.com/https://toadthewetsprocket.com/.https://toadthewetsprocket.bandcamp.com/Though Glen said he doesn't use social media much, you can still give him a follow on Twitter at @glenphillips. "Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth. For the full story and our music picks, tune in to this week's installment of "Roots to Grooves"!To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

The release of Dirty Projectors' self-titled album last year came after a five-year hiatus and the departure of longtime singer Amber Coffman. The songs, which documented that departure, were heart-breaking, dark and cathartic. But frontman David Longstreth is already back with a follow-up, and a brighter one at that. Lamp Lit Prose (out July 13) suggests he's emerged with a newfound optimism, and on this week's show we've got the first single from it: "Break-Thru." Full playlist for this episode: 1. Dirty Projectors: "Break-Thru," 2. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks: "Middle America," 3. Sofi Tukker: "Benadryl," 4. Shannon & The Clams: "Onion," 5. Valley Queen: "Supergiant," 6. Jessica Risker: "I See You Among The Stars," 7. Red Baraat: "Kala Mukhra"
