Born Patricia Louise Holte in 1944 in Southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the woman we know as Patti LaBelle was raised in a large family as the second-youngest of five children. Her father worked on the railroad and performed in clubs, while her mother was a domestic worker. From a young age, Patti found solace and purpose in music — she joined her church choir at age 10 and by 12 was singing solo. Her early life wasn't easy. The marriage of her parents was troubled, and after her parents separated when she was 12, she experienced deep personal trauma. Yet despite hardship, she held onto music — both for comfort and as an outlet — listening to jazz, R&B and gospel as she grew up.In her mid-teens Patti began dreaming of making music beyond the church. By 1960, she formed a girl group called The Ordettes with friends at school. The next year members changed and the group evolved into Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles — soon to become simply Labelle in the '70s. The Bluebelles enjoyed moderate success: in '62 they scored a Top-20 hit. Later, they found acclaim covering classics like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” In the '70s Labelle's sound evolved. The group embraced funk, soul, and rock — culminating in the '74 smash hit Lady Marmalade. The song and its style cemented their place in music history. But amidst growing fame, internal tensions and changing musical landscapes led to the group's split in '77. That difficult moment became the launchpad for Patti's solo journey. Patti's debut solo album, simply titled Patti LaBelle, came out in '77. Her true breakthrough came mid-'80s. A string of hits turned Patti into a household name. 1986's album Winner in You — featuring the duet On My Own with Michael McDonald — topped U.S. charts and solidified her commercial success. In the '90s Patti continued to release albums. She earned a second and sold tens of millions of records worldwide.Patti's talents reach far beyond singing. Over the decades she's dabbled in acting and is also a successful author. Her 1996 memoir Don't Block the Blessings: Revelations of a Lifetime gives insight into her hardships, faith and perseverance. She later penned cookbooks, launched a food brand with frozen comfort foods, and her signature sweet-potato pies.Today Patti LaBelle shows no signs of slowing down. In 2024, she marked her 80th birthday by announcing a brand new album titled 8065 — a tribute to her 80 years alive and 65 years in show business. She's also hit the road with the “8065 Celebration Tour,” which will take her to audiences around the world — including stops planned for Australia and New Zealand early in 2026.At 81, Patti remains a powerhouse performer. Her message to fans? Age is just a number — and she's proof. Reflecting on her decades-long career, she recently said she feels blessed to still be “standing” — able to sing, walk, and create. Her fans, across generations, couldn't agree more. From “The Ordettes” to Stardom, this episode details the rise and rise of the legend we knowas Patti Labelle.Catch her on tour here:Jan 16 Rancho Mirage, CA, United StatesJan 17 Thunder Valley Casino Resort Lincoln, CA, Jan 20 Riverside Theatre Perth, AustraliaJan 22 Palais Theatre St Kilda, Jan 24 Adelaide Entertainment Centre Jan 25 Sydney Event Centre Jan 28 The Star Gold Coast Jan 30 The Civic Auckland, New ZealandFeb 12 Jacksonville, FL, Feb 13 Charlotte, NC, United StatesFeb 15 St Louis, MOFeb 19 New OrleansFeb 20 Houston, TXFeb 22 Fort Worth, TXMar 14 Westbury South, NY

This week, much to Christopher’s chagrin, we do a deep dive into Yacht Rock! We’ll hear from Toto, Steely Dan, Doobie Bros, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, Little River Band, Orleans and… Earth, Wind & Fire? (That last one leads to a spirited disagreement between Tom & Christopher) Among the highlights of this episode: - Michael McDonald explains the evolution of the Doobie Brothers’ sound - Christopher Cross talks about his debut album, which contained several Yacht Rock classics. - Steve Porcaro explains how a group of session players and friends morphed into Toto - Kenny Loggins remembers working with Stevie Nicks on “Whenever I Call You Friend” - Al Stewart deconstructs the story behind his biggest hit, “Year Of The Cat” - Boz Scaggs breaks down “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown” - We also hear from the most reluctant group in the Yacht Rock pantheon, Steely Dan, including a bonus cut from the Dan’s only foray into advertising jingles. (We assure you it’s a weird one!) - Plus, interview clips from Little River Band, Orleans, Marc Jordan, Seals & Crofts and more. It’s an episode chock full of artists who are Yachty by nature! Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. And just like that, we're back to brackets! Ron returns to guide through the deep dark depths of quote mining. Everyday phrases depicting simple “truths” turn out to be simple misnomers. Who would have thought that foundational pieces of dogma could be entirely the result paraphrasing and misinterpretation? Everything from “the early bird gets the worm” to “peace on earth” is up for reevaluation…But of course, that's not all we talk about. We ask very important questions, like what kind of music a pigeon would most be suited to play, or if Michael McDonald and Cher might be the same person, or what the hell is the Frankenstein Veto? And if you enjoy what we are doing here at the Pit and would like to support us further, please check us out our patreon, where we have exclusive extended episodes! "The Very Day" If you're wondering if the Connecticut-born Grammyt Award winning keyboardist and composer grew up with music in the house, the answer is yes--his father Joe Porcaro was a renowned jazz drummer who played with everyone from Sinatra to Stan Getz to Madonna. He also played on hundreds of film and television scores including The Wild Bunch, I Dream Of Jeannie and Edward Scissorhands. He also founded the Percussion Institute of Technology and later the drum department at the Los Angeles Music Academy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_College_of_Music). So, yeah music was the lifesblood of the Porcaro household and at very young ages, Steve and his brothers Mike and Jeff went into the family business. How early of an age you might be wondering? Well, at 17 when most of us were finishing our last year of high school and thinking about who and who wouldn't go with us to the prom, Steve was playing with Gary Wright's band on his 1976 Dream Weaver tour. A year later while most of us were fumbling our way through our first year of college, Steve and his brothers were in Boz Scaggs's band. In 1978 Steve and his brother Jeff along with a few other session playing pals formed their own band called Toto. How'd that work out? Well, 50 million albums later, I'd say it worked out very well, thank you. From "Hold The Line" to "Rosanna" to "Africa" Toto had a procession of hits, became one of the biggest bands on the planet and went on to compose the music for David Lynch's Dune. Steve left the fold in 1987 and went on to compose and score for countless film and television projects, including From Dusk Til Dawn 2, Eddie Murphy's Metro and he did all the original music for Justified. This is just a partial list, by the way--he also wrote the song "Human Nature" which Michael Jackson recorded on his Thriller album, the beginning of several compositions he wrote for Jackson to record. Considered one of the pioneers of analog synths, Porcaro's inventive loops appeared on works by everyone from Elton John to Don Henley. When it comes to artists he's collaborated with, here's a list that's going to knock you out: Hall and Oates, Earth Wind and Fire, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, Warren Zevon, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, and Michael McDonald. Also a partial list. And speaking of Yes, Porcaro was good friends with Yes's Chris Squire and played in his band The Chris Squire Experiment. Porcaro's second solo album The Very Day is one of 2025's real bright spots. Featuring guest appearances by Stan Lynch, Jude Cole, Michael McDonald, Gardner Cole and his Toto pal David Paich, The Very Day is a stirring song cycle of effortless pop melodies, rootsy grooves and insanely catchy hooks. It's pure magic. And this conversation felt the same. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring our own podcast host and trumpeter John Snell, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Getting to know John Snell" Who is the man behind the microphone? You've been asking for a long time, 12.5 years and 138 episodes in fact, and today's the day: it's time to put John Snell himself on the other side of the bell! John is the steadfast presence at Bob Reeves Brass, from the shop to the studio to the numerous conferences and events he attends every year. Many of you have met him in person over the years, and with our increasing number of video episodes, you have a better sense for what he's like. Yet his story has only emerged in bits and pieces over all that time and all those episodes, and warrants the spotlight just as much as any of the wonderful guests who have stopped by the podcast since 2013. And who better to interview John than the gregariously awesome Vinnie Ciesielski, who was himself a guest on The Other Side of the Bell, Episode #93 back in September of 2021. Vinnie and John chat about how John grew up to follow in the footsteps of his professional trumpet-playing father, Keith Snell, yet forged his own path through his education, musical styles and interests, before a sudden complete career U-turn that proved to give him another solid professional foundation, alongside his continued passion for music. And behind it all, for the past 20+ years, there's been Bob Reeves Brass. John talks about first meeting Bob and being taken under his wing, before returning with a law degree in hand to rescue the business, provide stability for Bob and his wife into retirement, and maintaining Bob's principled approach to business and customer service. Thank you to Vinnie for encouraging the idea and bringing this episode to life, and thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and viewers for your continued support. Don't forget to share this and other episodes with your friends in the trumpet world and beyond, and send us your thoughts and feedback! We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Vince Gill. ABOUT VINCE GILLMulti-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Vince Gill launched his solo career in the mid-1980s, hitting the Top 10 on Billboard's country singles chart a remarkable 25 times. All but one of those hits was written or co-written by Gill, and a dozen of his compositions have been nominated for either CMA Song of the Year, ACM Song of the Year, or the Best Country Song Grammy. These include “When I Call Your Name,” “Look At Us,” “Pocket Full of Gold,” “When Love Finds You,” “High Lonesome Sound,” “If You Have Forever in Mind,” “Feels Like Love,” and “Threaten Me With Heaven.” “Go Rest High on That Mountain” won both the CMA Song of the Year and the Best Country Song Grammy, while “I Still Believe in You” won the Best Country Song Grammy, as well as both the CMA and the ACM's Song of the Year awards. Though he's won four in total, Vince is the only songwriter to ever win three consecutive Song of the Year awards from the CMA. He has won more Grammy awards, with over 20 trophies, than any male country performer in history. These include two Best Country Song wins, as well as a 2017 win for Best American Roots Song for “Kid Sister,” which was recorded by Gill's band, The Time Jumpers. He has won eight ACM awards and 18 CMA awards, including Vocalist of the Year five years in a row and Entertainer of the Year two years in a row. Other highlights from his long list of hit singles include the #1 hits “Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away,” “One More Last Chance,” and “Tryin' to Get Over You.” In addition to writing his own material, Vince's songs have been recorded by Loretta Lynn, Bob Seger, John Denver, Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Prine, Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, LeAnn Rimes, and Alabama, who topped the country charts with his “Here We Are.” Vince was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2014, he was named a BMI Icon, one of only twelve country writers ever honored with the prestigious award.

Seven tracks. No filler. The cleanest, smoothest, most obsessively crafted album of the ‘70s.This week, the McGuigan Brothers drop the needle on Aja, the record that turned Steely Dan from a band into a studio machine. We're talking Michael McDonald harmonies, Wayne Shorter solos, the Purdy Shuffle, Steve Gadd's legendary drum break, and lyrics that read like noir poetry. From Chevy Chase on drums in college, to ditching the tour bus forever, to making an album that still gets name-checked in every audiophile forum on the internet. We go track by track, category by category.Plus: The Odyssey connection, Bernard Purdie's Beatles claim, and why Aja might be the ultimate “someone had to show it to you” record.
