Cephus Johnson - The Killing of Oscar GrantMarch 19Oscar Grant III was a 22-year-old African-American man who was killed in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009 by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California. Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco, BART Police officers detained Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. BART officer Anthony Pirone kneed Grant in the head and forced Grant to lie face down on the platform. Mehserle drew his pistol and shot Grant. Grant was rushed to Highland Hospital in Oakland and pronounced dead later that day. The events were captured on bystanders' mobile phones. Owners disseminated their footage to media outlets and to various websites where it went viral. Both protests and riots took place in the following days.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

You're not likely to find the words of English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge hanging in the lockers of professional athletes now or ever. But the line “Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink” from Coleridge's poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” is quite applicable to the situation that is endemic in American sports these days. Everywhere you turn, you're going to see some reference to legalized sports betting and it ain't subtle. Sometimes, it's commercials between innings and during timeouts. These days, you're just as likely to see comedian Kevin Hart barking in one gambling ad than you are, say, LeBron James or Adley Rutschman. In other instances, it might be announcer references to betting odds or point spreads during the game. In some cases, the allusion to gambling is right there on the court or on the field, so you don't miss the Invitation to lay down a bet or two or three or a hundred. Yet, while all this wagering is going on, the men and women who make it possible, the athletes are barred from taking part in it. Indeed, the NFL laid down indefinite suspensions against three players – Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders and Quintez Cephus and C.J Moore both of the Detroit Lions – for betting on NFL games. The league also suspended two other Detroit players, Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams for six games each for gambling on non-NFL games. Cephus and Moore, who were both cut by the Lions Friday, are the fourth and fifth NFL players to draw bans of at least a year in the past four years for wagering on football games. This is in keeping with the hard line drawn by NFL Commissioner Smilin Roger Goodell, who said 10 years ago quote “The N.F.L. cannot be compensated in damages for the harm that sports gambling poses to the goodwill, character and integrity of N.F.L. football unquote. That's when the NFL was lobbying Congress to pass legislation barring legalized sports gambling. However, once the Supreme Court gave its stamp of approval to wagering in 2018, all bets were off, so to speak. To demonstrate the pretzel logic the NFL has displayed on gambling, consider that Josh Shaw, one of the players who drew a lengthy suspension back in 2019 was cut from the Arizona Cardinals. Shaw has not played since he was suspended. Meanwhile, a sports book operates at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the place where, you guessed it, the Cardinals play. The NFL and Goodell are so concerned about the pernicious influence that gambling can have on football that they not only have a team, the Raiders, operating in the capital of gambling, Las Vegas, but next February's Super Bowl, the holiest day on the American sports calendar, will be played in Vegas. Goodell and his commissioner cronies have every right to be alarmed about the image of athletes laying down bets on games they're involved in, though there's no evidence that happened in last week's suspensions. But as long as the leagues take the Claude Rains approach to gambling, they can't be shocked, shocked that the players want some of the action. And that's how I see it for this week. The NFL suspends 5 players for alleged violations of gambling policy. Four players from the Detroit Lions and one from the Washington Commanders were flagged by the league, with three of the players suspended indefinitely. The NFL hit four Detroit Lions and one Washington Commander with heavy suspensions for allegedly violating league gambling policy, officials said Friday. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore of the Lions, and defensive end Shaka Toney of the Commanders were "suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season," according to a league statement.Lions WRs Stanley Berryhill and Jamerson Williams were each banned from the first six games of this upcoming season, though they can still participate in preseason activities with their team, the league said. The Lions cut ties with Cephus and Moore in wake of the suspensions. “These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules," Lions GM Brad Holmes said in a statement. "We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.” A representative for the players' union, the NFLPA, declined comment on Friday. While the league was short on details, it insisted no games were compromised by the players' alleged wagering."The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility," according to the league. We discuss all movements made this season and some more that we would like to see. The episode ends with some Boston sports talk so stick around. (Papp even Cephus gets brought up)
Attorney Cephus Richard, III, owns a Dallas, Texas law firm specializing in personal injury, criminal defense, and sports law. Attorney Richard is licensed to practice law in Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas and is also a Certified NFL Contract Advisor. As a young man, Cephus had big plans to serve as president of the United States. With an election lost, he re-focused his energy on obtaining the legal degree he was studying to achieve. Finding his passion as a trial attorney who enjoys mixing in a bit of hip-hop, Cephus is now representing residents in three states. Listen in as Cephus and I discuss moving forward through the pivots, driving too fast and a bit of “In the Box” marketing. Scouting Academy founder Dan Hatman returns to Matt Waldman's RSP Cast for a conversation about Wisconsin WR Quintez Cephus' work out, investigating irregularities with 40-Yard Dash times and why there's room for generalists and specialists in the scouting profession. Dan Hatman is an excellent resource for the draft community. The former NFL scout for the Giants and Eagles is several years into building the Scouting Academy, a curriculum for those wishing to learn more about studying the game and evaluating football talent. The Scouting Academy has placed several of its students into positions with the NFL and college football. We begin our podcast where I share a story about Dan's work helping his students earn positions in the league and the initial skepticism people had with the program design that has now won over a significant number of teams in the league. I actually know a college recruiter who missed out on a pair of NFL jobs after making it to the final round of interviews because the teams chose an alumnus of the Scouting Academy. The majority of our conversation focused on Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus, his combine results, and how skilled scouts will investigate his disappointing 40-Yard Dash performance in lieu of strong performances on tape, the 20 Shuttle, the Broad Jump, and the Vertical Jump. You'll learn more about the Floating 20 from Dan and I share some historical data about receivers with Cephus's Vertical Jump and how fast they ran. We finish the pod with an extended conversation about the skills required to become a scout, how there are generalists, and specialists in the field, and ways teams can leverage these talents effectively. You'll hear a bit of an abrupt ending to the podcast--Dan had his microphone on mute after my last comment and I thought he had to drop out to make an appointment at the top of the hour. Still, you'll find this conversation worthwhile. For the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), pre-order the 2020 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95. If you’re a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2019 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that’s included at no additional charge. Best yet, a percentage of each sale is set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat sexual abuse.

Dan and Josh return after a shorter break than usual to recap the AFC and NFC playoff games...which were a tad boring. Also some side bar discussion about quarterbacks at the ends of their deals, the new Cowboys coach and a brief bit about overtime. There's a quick bit about Badger football as Cephus is going to the pro with Taylor, college hoops has Marquette and Wisconsin both coming off big weekend wins, the Bucks kick off a four-game Western conference trip, and another former Brewer signs elsewhere. Plus, does wearing a team shoe in high school matter...? All that and more on this edition. Tell your friends.

The Schedule (starts at 1:00) Seth fights to talk about MTSU's slot bug. Why are we playing Army? They go for it on every 4th down. Jonathan vs Michigan's DT situation doesn't sound great right now. Hornibrook transferred to FSU? The next wave of LBs weren't as eye-popping as the last ones. Cephus is back. Rutgers: everyone guess the winning margin. Iowa has an Epenesa, but DTs? Receivers? Illinois is a sadder version of Rich Rod-era Michigan. Rumor is Fox saved us from a night game at Penn State. Their QB bailed, they've got a Speedy Eaglet. ND: Kelly is more comfortable with Ian Book, going through an OL and LB transition, let's not talk about their DEs, Seth wants to talk about their Navy safety. Maryland should be not competitive—Anthony McFarland and co. can move. We're skeptical of Locksley. Michigan State has a defense, probably not that many more than 95 yards; Cody White ain't Felton Davis. IU got rid of DeBord, replaced with DeBoer, Tom Allen's team is no longer fun, just hateful and trending bad. 2. Big Ten West Preview (starts at 54:25) Bring the jug to Indy! 3. Big Ten East Preview (starts at 1:07:14) Big two, little bit Penn State. 4. Gimmicky Top Five: Specific Predictions for 2019 (starts at 1:15:15) I've made a huge mistake dot gif. In this episode, I'll be speaking to Cephus ("Uncle Bobby") Johnson -- the uncle of Oscar Grant, who was shot and killed by a transit officer in Oakland in 2009 -- as well as Nissa Tzun of Families United 4 Justice. We'll discuss the ways in which families are affected by police violence, but so often do without the support and services of the community when their loved ones are killed. The sympathy that so often attaches to the victims of criminal violence is rarely as forthcoming for those victimized by law enforcement. What do these families need, and need for us to know? And how can we elevate their voices in the larger discussion about reforming policing in America? Disclaimer: My apologies for some of the sound glitches in this episode. I was doing a Skype recording with both guests at once and it created some feedback, some of which I was able to eliminate, but some of which I was not. Lesson learned, the technical quality will improve from here on out!
