The 90s are littered with one hit or album wonders, artists that broke out, but were forced to break down thanks to a chaotic music biz, but VH mastermind Matt Scannell has not only survived but thrived. He could have packed it in after the label buried their follow up album to the double platinum breakthrough, or he could have called it quits at any point while scratching to make it as an indie artist. Aliza Hava – Music is Healing

The Journey of My Mother's Son

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Aliza Hava. I was honored to have the incredibly talented singer songwriter, Aliza Hava (“aLEEza Hah-vuh”) on my show.  We talk about music, trauma, healing, life, and the state of our world today.  Most importantly, we talk about the role in which music can play in our lives to help heal past trauma and help us connect with each other and God. Ethereal. Enlightening. Medicine for the soul. Aliza Hava interlaces the elements; earth and sky, fire and water. Her transcendent voice is reminiscent of the mystical tone of Stevie Nicks, the raw soul of Janis Joplin, and the gritty wisdom of Brandi Carlile. With her award-winning infusion of folk, rock, pop, and soul, Aliza heals the tiny forgotten bits of ourselves while rekindling our memories, setting our feet on the path back home, and calling us to rise into our best versions of ourselves. Featured on the soundtrack of Sharon Stone's award-winning documentary, Femme: Women Healing the World, which also features performances by Annie Lennox, Yoko Ono, and Rickie Lee Jones, Hava is a recipient of the Human Spirit Award presented by the international organization Talent for Humanity. Her story is featured in their book along with seven other internationally acclaimed artist/activists. The original recording of her song RISE can be heard on Occupy this Album: 99 Songs for the 99% alongside artists such as Ani DiFranco, Jackson Browne, and Warren Haynes. Hava has always sought to relay a message of healing and hope in her music. Seeking solace from a difficult childhood, she turned to music at an early age. Self-taught on a twenty-dollar used guitar, she found inspiration in an old songbook she discovered in her parent's basement, 'Great Songs of the 60s.'  Fire-lit, Hava immersed herself in the history of the 60s and early 70s. The music, culture, and activism helped her discover her calling for healing and ignited a drive to write songs that could change the world. While in university studying Music Therapy, Aliza developed a strong inclination towards student activism and discovered a natural gift for concert production and community organizing. She began producing charity concerts featuring local bands for campus organizations like Students for a Free Tibet, and led drum circles in the infamous “Tripping Fields” behind the college where some of the greatest names in music once played, including the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. With her college located just thirty miles from the town of Woodstock, Hava soaked up the culture and spirit that continued to permeate the region many decades later. She collaborated with local musicians, pulled all-nighters with her guitar around campfires, and earned herself the nickname, FireMusicFaerie. After college, Aliza began performing at and co-producing concerts at the United Nations headquarters in NYC. She earned a position as Chair of the UN International Day of Peace NGO Music Committee and went on to produce live concerts on six continents in partnership with over forty civic society, governmental, and environmental organizations. While living part-time in the Middle East, Hava represented UN-related peacebuilding initiatives and worked with Israeli and Palestinian musicians promoting peace and dialogue through music. She went on to produce the internationally live-streamed concert, Harmony in the Holy Land. This extraordinary event united Muslim, Christian, and Jewish musicians in a universal, musical prayer for peace from the heart of Jerusalem. Watching Palestinians and Israelis meet as strangers and part ways as friends, Aliza felt the reaffirmation of her calling to build bridges through the healing power of music. Hava has recently finished recording a new album at the iconic Revolver Recording Studios in Thousand Oaks, CA, produced by multi-platinum, Grammy winner Mikal Blue, who is best known for his work with Colbie Callait, Jason Mraz, and OneRepublic. The album is expected in Spring 2024 and features bassist Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket as musical arranger and on bass/keys, and Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, Santana) on drums. Her latest single, When the Children Cry, is a cover of White Lion's soulful ballad, and its message of peace is even more poignant today than it was when originally released in the late 80s. This song resonates through the generations with a message of healing and hope for the children of the world. In addition to writing her own music, Aliza collaborates with artists and songwriters and is a co-writer on Grammy-Award-winning artist Macy Gray's upcoming EP, produced by Mikal Blue. Throughout her journeys, Aliza has shared bills with world-class artists such as Dr. John, Michael Franti, Zac Brown Band, Rising Appalachia, and more. She has performed in the U.S., Canada, India, Morocco, Egypt, Italy, Australia, Jordan, Israel, and South Korea. With an inherent message of peace and universal love, Aliza considers her music and work a form of sacred activism. Her songs embody the power of music to uplift the mind, body, and soul while staying true to the ongoing practice of reclaiming our natural state. To find out more about Aliza, her story, and her music, check out her website at https://alizahava.com/.

They include unlimited PTO. “We have it unlimited for a reason. If people need to take care of themselves, they take care of themselves.”“We have a very progressive parental leave policy,” he says. New Disabled South offers “a year of parental leave– that's six months fully paid, full time off, and six months part-time hours fully paid.”In addition, the organization offers a robust insurance package that includes life, vision, dental, and health. “Also, we're a remote organization; we support our employees, making sure they have a comfortable place to work,” Dom says.A final aspect of the hiring practice is a four-day, 32-hour work week that allows people time to rest and enjoy life as well as work. This broad, employee-friendly policy grew out of Dom's superpower: empathy.AI Episode Summary1. Dom Kelly is the founder, CEO, and president of New Disabled South, a nonprofit with an affiliated 501(c)(4), that focuses on advocacy and support for disabled individuals in the South.2. New Disabled South is unique in focusing on disability issues from a regional perspective in the South, addressing common challenges that disabled individuals face in the area.3. Some of the challenges specific to the South include barriers to voting access, non-expanded Medicaid, long waiting times for home care waivers, higher poverty rates, inaccessible transportation, and housing crises.4. Dom mentions that leaders lacking empathy can negatively impact both their leadership and their organization.5. New Disabled South's employment practices are designed to create an inclusive and supportive environment and include benefits like a four-day workweek and fully paid unlimited time off, among others.6. The organization's workplace policies prioritize empathy and support for employees' overall well-being and life experiences.7. Dom believes that his superpower is empathy, which has been shaped by personal experiences, such as the loss of his brother when they were children.8. He shares a story where displaying empathy during a difficult time at his job led to him doubling down on his commitment to help refugees, which reaffirmed his values and eventually brought him on the path to his current work.9. Dom advises that developing empathy starts with genuinely listening to others without interjecting, allowing for perspectives and experiences to be shared openly.10. Dom can be reached and supported through New Disabled South's website (newdisabledsouth.org), with direct donation links available, and he is also on LinkedIn and social media under the handle (at)the_tattooedjew. If you think employers can do better at including disabled people in hiring, please share. How to Develop Empathy As a SuperpowerDom began to appreciate empathy when his fraternal triplet brother passed away when they were six. It helped him to better understand the human connections between people.“I have seen a lack of empathy take down leaders and organizations,” Dom says. “It is something I just go back to often and remind myself to use my empathy as a strength.”Dom shared a story of a time when feeling and manifesting empathy was a challenge but also particularly important, and he could lean on this strength to help a friend.I was in a job that I was feeling frustrated with. It wasn't a good fit. The boss that I had didn't have a whole lot of empathy. He said some things to me–my wife and I were doing some work at the border at the time to help refugees, doing some organizing. At the time, he said something like, “I wish you cared as much about my business as you do about refugees at the border.” It was frustrating because I felt I was working hard. At the same time, it highlighted some misalignment for me.So, I share that because I was feeling frustrated, I was feeling afraid I was going to lose my job, or I was going to quit my job.At the time, we had a couple of friends who came to live with us as refugees from Honduras. When I got home that day, one of them had found out he had got a bad diagnosis and shared it with us. I got to put my stuff aside, be there for him and his partner, and be supportive and listen. It affirmed my commitment to that work. What wound up happening was I lost that job, and it wound up being the best thing that ever happened to me because I wouldn't be down this path that I'm on now. But my ability to put that aside and be there for someone who needed it put it into focus and put things into perspective and made me realign with my values and what was important to me. I showed up in that moment for someone who needed me.Dom offers a few tips for developing your empathy.“Take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth,” he says. “Empathy is just sitting and listening to another person, not having to speak, not having to interject unless it's needed or asked for.”By following Dom's example and advice, you can strengthen your empathy. With practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileDom Kelly (he/him):Co-Founder, President and CEO, New Disabled SouthAbout New Disabled South: New Disabled South is the first and only regional disability organization in the United States, fighting for liberation, justice, and rights for all disabled people in the South. This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band.  Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. In addition to their touring success and amassing over 6 million streams, radio has also taken notice, with national AAA and public broadcasters across the U.S. eagerly embracing Pressing Strings and taking them to the top of their charts.PRESSING STRINGS - "And I For You"        OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! SUMMARY:You wanted the best, you got the best! Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul Stanley of KISS joins Songcraft to talk about his long and diverse career through the lens of his role as a songwriter.PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about musicians who adopt personas, how KISS seems to have the best timing of any musical group of all time, and their respective frightening memories of the band. Then they spend the rest of the time pinching themselves that Paul freakin' Stanley is on Songcraft.  PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul StanleyABOUT PAUL STANLEY:Paul Stanley is best known for his vocals, guitar, and outlandish stage performances that have helped define KISS. Combining elements of shock rock and glam to set a new standard for theatrical arena rock, Stanley's Starchild persona, alongside fellow band co-founder Gene Simmons's Demon character, has become one of the most iconic figures in music history. One of the best-selling bands of all time, KISS has sold over 75 million albums worldwide, and has earned more Gold-certified albums than any other band in the US. Fourteen of their albums have been certified Platinum, three of which have earned multi-Platinum status. Stanley has written or co-written many of the band's best-known songs, including “Strutter,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Shout it Out Loud,” “Detroit Rock City,” “God of Thunder,” “Hard Luck Woman,” “Love Gun,” “I Was Made for Lovin' You,” “Lick it Up,” “Heaven's on Fire,” “Crazy, Crazy Nights,” “Forever,” and many others. In addition to his work with the band, Stanley released a self-titled debut album in 1978, and another solo album in 2006 called Live to Win. More recently, he released the album Now and Then, a collection of R&B classics alongside vintage-style originals under the name Paul Stanley's Soul Station. Defying categorization, he has written a hit song with Michael Bolton, duetted with Sarah Brightman, and even starred in a production of Phantom of the Opera. Paul's songs have been covered by a diverse list of artists, including Cher, Nirvana, The Replacements, Green Day, Ronnie Spector, Bonnie Tyler, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Garth Brooks. As a member of KISS, Paul was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. This fall, the band wraps the final leg of their End of the Road tour, culminating in a pair of shows at Madison Square Garden in New York, the city where KISS first formed in 1972.

On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice. He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists. In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched. Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee). Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David).  Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song. In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product. In 2012, Etzioni released the 2-disc album Marvin Country on Nine Mile Records. On the album, which had been in development since 1985, Etzioni played mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, piano, Mellotron, porchboard and keyboards. Included are duets with Lucinda Williams ("Lay It on the Table"),Steve Earle ("Ain't No Work in Mississippi"), Richard Thompson ("It Don't Cost Much"), Buddy Miller ("Living Like a Hobo"), John Doe ("The Grapes of Wrath"), Maria McKee ("You Possess Me"), and the Dixie Hummingbirds ("You Are the Light"). For most songs, the backing band was Heffington (drums), Steve Fishell (pedal steel), Gurf Morlix (bass), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Buddy Miller and Duane Jarvis (guitar). Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions."  The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin.   Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021. As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000.  In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences.  A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad. Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006.  In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009. Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008. In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun." On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021. Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health.  Go figure.   Toad the Wet Sprocket is hitting the road this summer. When Toad went on hiatus, he launched a solo career with Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew. Phillips' previous solo record, Swallowed by the New, was a post-divorce outing about grief, while There Is So Much Here finds Phillips writing love songs again focusing on gratitude, beauty and staying present. “Looking at this batch of songs, I realized I'd turned a corner. I noticed that I was in a state of being that wasn't all about loss. Things felt doable and hopeful again. There's no pure happy ending - the world is a mess, the future is uncertain - but I started to internalize poet Mary Oliver's words: ‘Attention is the beginning of devotion.' I'm paying better attention. I'm getting more devoted.” The 11 tracks on the album move between quiet love songs and outright rockers that consider the multi-faceted meanings hidden in our everyday lives. “Stone Throat” is a midtempo rocker that looks at a couple in a new relationship, trying to find the balance between desire and responsibility, or as Phillips sings, “trying to find the balance, between the sacred and the street.” There's a hint of new wave ska in the rhythm of “I Was a Riot,” a song that casts a compassionate eye on the end of a relationship. “The arrangement nods to Joe Jackson's Look Sharp,” Phillips says. “Graham Maby is one of the greatest bass players of all time, so we had him in mind when laying down the bass part.”  The COVID lockdown-inspired “The Sound of Drinking,” is an appreciation of the familiar things in life, like drinking a glass of water on your back porch. Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) plays soft acoustic guitar and Glen sighs a lyric of gratitude for simple pleasures. “Call The Moondust” is the most metaphysical song in the set. There's a dash of secular gospel in Depper's piano, and ambient effects that suggest the vastness of the cosmos. Phillips delivers an emotional performance over a tense arrangement that hints at the wonders of the universe. “The beauty of life is in its mystery,” Phillips states. “If we think we have an answer, we're deluding ourselves. My dad was a physicist and was reading about string theory on his death bed. He found God in all those extra folded dimensions, and left this world with a sense of wonder. I hope I can do the same.” Ultimately, as Phillips reflects on the album, he shares: “This is an album about showing up for what is and letting it be enough.” We want to hear from you! Even during their 90's heyday -- with popular singles like "Fall Down," "Walk on the Ocean," "Something's Always Wrong" and "All I Want" ruling the radio -- Toad the Wet Sprocket vocalist and songwriter Glen Phillips recognized that they weren't "the cool kids," often being the least edgy band on any alt-rock marquee. But Glen says it's that same overt self-awareness that has both kept Toad fans around and stirred his current creativity: Releasing a new album based solely on minimal songwriting prompts, and leading a community choir made up of all genders, ages and backgrounds. On this episode, Glen discusses an early love of disco, the visual aesthetics of the 4AD label, his brother's forensic devotion to synthesizers, and why the cover art for Toad's second album Pale is still being studied in graphic design classes. One as the lead singer in one of the most successful bands of the 90's, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and one as a solo artist (who happens to have many side projects like Mutual Admiration Society, Works Progress Administration, etc.).He's written and sang some of my all time favorites and it was my pleasure to visit with Glen and talk about his new album, "There is So Much Here"All songs written by Glen Phillips (https://glenphillips.com/)The Sound of DrinkingCenter of the CircleAll I WantStone ThroatRecorded at Grove Studioshttps://grovestudios.space/

Wesley David has lived 2 very different lives, and the only thing that's held them - and himself - together has been an obsession with music.  Growing up in the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Singer-Songwriter has relied on a love of all things Rock ‘n' Roll since a young age as an escape - one which would eventually lead him to become a touring musician in LA, Arizona and the Southwest.  Influenced at a young age by the alt-rock and pop of the 90s/2000s like Oasis , Nirvana and Radiohead, plus classic and prog rock from the Beatles to Rush, his whimsical, tongue-in-cheek songwriting style was both identity and escape from the often dreary and frightening world of an expectation of the Apocalypse (delayed).  His new EP 'Satori' is a 6-song collection produced by Thom Flowers (Steve Perry, The Ataris, Toad the Wet Sprocket) and features 'Easy for You' 'Seesaw', and 'I'll be damned'.  Website - https://wesleydavidmusic.comNew EP 'Satori' Signed Cassette - https://wesleydavid.bandcamp.comSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/album/0dOLLFslUryvWSwipjbksB?si=1QXqmrb3SoC62qnxIjJ1iwApple Music - https://music.apple.com/us/artist/wesley-david/1526621390'Easy for You' Music Video - https://youtu.be/N81koVD1f6E@wesleydavidmusichttps://instagram.com/wesleydavidmusic

This week is a fun twofer with a couple of excellent singer/songwriters that are hitting the road together. First up is Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips. Not only has Glen fronted Toad since the beginning with hits like "Walk On the Ocean" and "Come Down", but he's also had his own robust solo career. Glen has a new album coming out this weekend called There Is So Much Here that is a wonderfully optimistic take on the world. Glen is a deep guy and we hit all the big topics - faith, mental health, politics, and philosophy.  Then we get to hear from the wonderful Garrison Starr. Garrison, like many others, released her major label debut 25 years ago, but it didn't take off like everyone hoped so she's been an indie artist ever since releasing several incredible albums of self-reflection and coming to terms with who she is - an openly gay artist who grew up in a strict evangelical household. Garrison will be opening for Glen on the tour that kicks off this week. Enjoy!  www.glenphillips.com www.garrisonstarr.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
