On this week’s episode, songwriter Ela Minus talks with KEXP's Albina Cabrera about her new album, DÍA—a fully nomadic project with songs written and recorded between Mexico, Seattle, and her native Colombia. With DÍA, she steps away from her analog era and embraces everything at hand: broken microphones, acoustic instruments, and digital synths. It’s a search for freedom that began the moment she left her comfort zone. The album is out now via Domino Records. Clive Langer in conversation with David Eastaugh https://newclang.bandcamp.com/album/new-clang Best known as one of the UK's most successful record producers with a string of high-profile credits in his portfolio, CLIVE LANGER returns in the new year with a second album from his band project, THE CLANG GROUP.A belated follow-up to 2016's Practice, the Group's maiden outing for Domino Records, New Clang was recorded with Deaf School co-conspirators John Wood (aka Max Ripple) and Gregg Braden, along with former Klaxons bassist Jamie Reynolds. Written and recorded in the aftermath of Clive's 70th birthday, New Clang is adeeply personal but incredibly vibrant album; catching Clive in reflective mode, the songs address the process of ageing and the state of the world,as well as confronting his own addiction to alcohol.“ After the pandemic, the dust settled, it felt like it was time, a new time, to play again,” he explains. “Not to revisit but to write and rehearse with my Clang Group mates. We were missing a bass player and fortuitously I met Jamie Reynolds and he filled the vacancy. The songs started to flow, we were back in the groove!”“The new album is the first sober songwriting I think I've done in almost 50 years,” he adds. “I've known and accepted that I was an addict for decades... I just didn't do anything about it. I thought I could live with it, I still enjoyed it. Someone once asked me ‘What do you do?' I replied ‘I drink'. Anyway, making an album sober was like making an album drunk except I wassober!!” Packaged in spare black-on-white, suggesting a tabula rasaof sorts, New Clang's distinctive sleeve artis the work of British artist Edwin Burdis, whom Clive met during his time with Domino Records. “Clive asked me to a studio in London to listen to his new album, still a work in progress,” recalls Edwin. “I was struck by the contrast between the upbeat music and its underlying melancholy, evoking clowns and cartoon characters and a nostalgia for London's recent past. At the time, I had been drawing simple cartoon motifs that aligned perfectly with Clive's songs. I wanted the campaign to be cohesive—black-and-white graphics that blend humour with a sense of tragedy and sadness.” A founder member of pioneering Liverpool art-rockers Deaf School, Langer is noted for a string of production credits (usually in collaboration with Alan Winstanley) on hits forthe likes of Dexys Midnight Runners (the no.1 single and album ‘Come On Eileen' and Too-Rye-Ay)andDavid Bowie(‘Absolute Beginners') plus numerous landmark releasesfor Elvis Costello, Madness, Morrissey, The Teardrop Explodes, China Crisis, Bush, They Might Be Giants, The Rockingbirds and, more recently, Fat White Family.

Conor O'Brien aka Villagers released their sixth studio album That Golden Time on May 10 via Domino Records and talks through its 10 tracks on this episode of the TPOE podcast. ---- From the press release: After the band-centred sessions of its predecessor Fever Dreams, That Golden Time's solo-centric core was not forced on O'Brien by lockdown. “For me, That Golden Time has an internalised voice, so much so that I almost found it impossible to let anyone else in,” he says. “It's probably the most vulnerable album I've made. I played and recorded everything in my apartment, and finally, towards the end, invited people in.” Aside from Dónal Lunny, the album features American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick on violin, David Tapley of Dublin band Tandem Felix on pedal steel guitar, and a group of players that O'Brien had first seen performing in a tribute to one of his great loves, Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who added soprano vocal, viola and cello. The understated poetry within That Golden Time is effortlessly carried by gorgeous melodies and sublime instrumentation. Inspired by philosophers, poets, playwrights and singer-songwriters that had seeped into O'Brien's consciousness: namechecks this time go to Friedrich Nietzsche (his Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is quoted in the album's accompanying booklet), Dory Previn, Marcus Aurelius, Fintan O'Toole, Lorraine Hansberry, Chet Baker, Joan Didion, PJ Harvey and post-classical beauties Rachel's. --- Villagers Irish tour dates: June 29: Trinity College Dublin December 3: Cork Opera House December 4: Dolan's Warehouse, Limerick December 5: INEC Club, Killarney December 7: Mandela Hall, Belfast December 11: Set Theatre, Kilkenny December 12: Leisureland, Galway --- Passing a Message Passing a Message contains the lyrics to over 80 songs, with artwork and photographs, along with previously unseen notebook lyric drafts and drawings curated by Conor for his musical project, Villagers. "The Beatles blew my mind." The LA artist talks about her new album—Something in the Room She Moves—writing music while pregnant and how she works in the studio. The LA-based composer and musician Julia Holter has garnered a reputation for releases that toe the hazy edge of shoegaze and dream pop, always skirting the contours of the electronic music world. On today's RA Exchange, she takes a deep dive into her sixth studio album, Something in the Room She Moves, with music editor Andrew Ryce. Holter talks about writing all but one of the songs while she was pregnant ("Evening Mood" even captures a sample of her child's ultrasound, recorded from her phone), which lends the album a warmth and tenderness unparalleled in any of her past releases. But it's also a somber record; her nephew died while she was recording it, an event that forced her to process the complexity and gravity of two conflicting, converging experiences while composing. For the technically inclined, Holter also discusses how she works in the studio and manages post-production. As the artist tells Ryce, she likes to play with resonant frequencies and processing that puts each of the sounds she records into the same sonic world on a record, using effects and composition tricks to give everything what she calls a "sensuous vibe." Something in the Room She Moves is out now on Domino Records. Listen to the episode in full.

SWR1 Meilensteine - Alben die Geschichte machten

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2024 71:38

I hope you enjoy listening! George FitzGerald - "Mother (feat. SYML)" a 2023 single from Domino Records. British DJ/producer George FitzGerald teams up with SYML (aka Seattle's own Brian Fennell) for today's Song of the Day. The track can be found on FitzGerald's most recent EP Not As I, out now via Domino Records's imprint label, Double Six. “Collaborating with SYML on this EP was a real joy.” Fitzgerald says in a press release. “I actually reached out to him a few years ago to see if he was interested in writing together. He's an amazing lyricist and has a distinctive vocal tone, and I felt it would match my music really beautifully. Still, it took me quite a while to get to a place where I could finish the track, but sometimes you just have to let things take their course and not force them. Hopefully, you can hear some of that patience in this track.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Georgia - "Give It Up For Love," a 2023 single from Domino Records UK artist Georgia shares a single from her forthcoming full-length, Euphoric, out July 28th via Domino Records. The album marks the first time she has worked with an outside producer on her own work, and she couldn't have chosen better than Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend, and now collaborator/producer for Haim, Carly Rae Jepsen, Clairo).  Today's Song of the Day was inspired by Danny Boyle's 2000 film The Beach, and legendary producer William Orbit (who appears on the film's soundtrack). The single's accompanying video — directed by production duo Mathy & Fran — captures that weightlessness conveyed in her song. “We wanted to explore the song's themes of caution and bravery, through the act of diving. Abandoning stability to leap into the unknown, diving feels like both descending and soaring, and the perfect analogy for 'Give It Up For Love.' Creating a feeling of infinite free-fall for the choruses, our goal was to show ‘giving up' as something that leaves you weightless, rather than broken. The sunrise colour worlds are a nod to the Californian skies where Georgia recorded the track.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Electronic music and DJing are intrinsically linked, so what happens when your studio output shifts from being explicitly designed for mixing to something far less functional? Performing live is a challenge many DJs have taken up, but few as comprehensively as https://instagram.com/georgefitzgerald (George FitzGerald) who fully embraced the live experience after signing to https://dominomusic.com (Domino Records) and releasing music which was a step away from the UK-bass inflected house bangers with which he initially made his name.

It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. Thom: The Trash Palace Sultan of the Winner Gets Nothing Podcast joins our host John Pagliassotti on Bands, Beers & Buzzwords, a podcast that is anti-Satan but pro-troll. The album under discussion on this one is Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, released in 2007 on Domino Records. Familiar but foreign, modern and psychedelic, the sounds on this record will take you back to a time of childlike imagination. It's a cohesive work of art with ebbs and flows, valleys and peaks, and it begs to be listened to from start to finish. Thom draws connections to The Beach Boys and The Beatles, John brings up Pink Floyd and Radiohead AGAIN. Grab a drink and play along, drink (responsibly) whenever Thom says a buzzword!

This is a Bonus episode to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month. Thao & The Get Down Stay Down's latest album Temple opens with a chunky Vietnamese rock riff, the kind that Thao Nguyen's mother would have grown up dancing to—in the Vietnam of her youth, before war came to define the country. The title track is sung from her mother's point of view and includes snippets of real conversations. The most poignant being her stoic mother's advice to her to now "find her own freedom."Temple is about this quest for freedom and Thao's desire to live her most honest life. A search which has proved elusive, sitting at the crucible of race, gender and sexuality. The very things Thao had avoided discussing when she was coming up in the indie rock scene. While her 2016 album A Man Alive started this process of trying to reconcile her past by dealing with the loss she felt when her father abandoned the family, that was only the first step. With Temple she has finally come out publically as queer, started to come to terms with her own internalized racism and galvanized herself to be more of an activist. I had always admired Thao and her music from afar. She seemed an accomplished musician and songwriter who made singular records. I was not prepared for how honest and searing her work has always been. She might have never wanted to discuss her absent father, ethnicity or queer identity but it's in the DNA of her music. Many thanks for this possible — Thao Nguyen for writing brave songs and allowing me to tell this story. To Ribbon Music, Domino Records and Domino Publishing for use of songs from We the Common, A Man Alive and Temple. Additionally to Adam Thompson for use of songs "Temple," "Phenom" and "Pure Cinema." To Kill Rock Stars for use of "Bag of Hammers" from We Brave Bee Stings and All and NPR's Tiny Desk Concert for the live performance. To film-maker and director Todd Krolczyk for use of Nobody Dies documentary. And to publicist Sydney Yeo at Domino Recording Company. Songs Featured: "Temple," "Bag of Hammers," "Tallymarks," "We The Common (For Valerie Bolden)," "Kindness Be Conceived," "Meticulous Bird," "Millionaire," "Marauders," "Phenom" and "Pure Cinema."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Justin Daashuur Hopkins is a multidisciplinary storyteller (Director and Cinematographer, Musician and Composer, Graphic Designer, and Gallerist). Born into an artistic household, to renowned Illustrator Chris Hopkins and internationally collected sculptor Jan Hopkins, Justin was raised in Mukilteo, Washington, but now lives and works in Los Angeles. At the age of fifteen, he was already doing professional work for multiple clients, including conceptual merchandising and design for Costco, sound design and illustration for RedBull, and music for ESPN TV spots. He also shot the short film “Baristas,” which played to enthusiastic audiences in New York, LA, and Seattle. At the age of eighteen, Justin was hired at Olio Inc, an architectural firm specializing in major hotels in places like Vegas and Dubai. He spent the next five years doing architectural and sound design for international clients. In 2009, he struck out on his own, working as a freelance illustrator and fine art painter. He moved to New York and began showing in numerous international exhibitions, in addition to garnering attention for his commercial work. Upon his return to Los Angeles, Justin co-founded NOH/WAVE, an art agency, and production company, with gallery space downtown. This has given him the opportunity to curate shows by internationally acclaimed artists. His unique aesthetic and attention to detail have made him a sought-after director of film and mixed media video for clients including Universal, RCA, Warner Brothers, Atlantic, Def Jam, and Domino Records. In this week's episode I chat with Lynden Campbell, Head of Synchronisation at Domino Records about ethical tagging. We cover huge subjects like bias, language, and how ethical tagging in the music industry can increase our experience of music. Plus why we should be applying this across the internet in whatever industry you're in. If you're a brand, then this episode is extra useful as Lynden explains what a brief needs to get the best possible music match for your content. In this podcast we discuss: >> What 'ethical tagging' is and why language is paramount for brands who are providing the brief for music on their content. >> The bias that exists in music and the ethics of a 'positivity bias' and how this limits our cultural exposure. >> Why the words we use matter when it comes to search within music and how we can apply this for relevant and appropriate searches across the whole of content. >> Creating awareness of a content echo chamber - losing the beauty of finding something new. >> Being aware of our filters and unconscious bias. As well as the algorithms that expose us to our cultural markers. >> A positive dialogue that exists from developers (and others within the content world) to try change how we search. >> Dr Julia Jones - The Music Diet - and how research is based around the musical tastes of those running the studies. And why we need to consider the world of music, other voices and counter-cultures. >> The limitations of apps like Spotify for exposing us to music (and why we need to consider this for all content). >> The problem of what is considered 'recognisable'. >> It's not enough to whinge about the problem, you need to deliver a solution to address the problem. >> How Lynden has been bringing ethical tagging to people's awareness to make a change. >> Why using cultural reference points can help you talk to your audience and reach into certain communities. >> Questioning the language and values we've been using for years. >> What brands and content creators can do better when providing their briefs (and the tools they can use to do this). >> The issues of broad briefs and the biases around the audiences brands are targeting. >> How music can drive traffic to the website and ultimately result in sales. >> Why brands need to understand what is it that the music will achieve for them rather than fully embodying the brand values. >> And the need for the context when it comes to matching the right music for the content. >> The importance of case studies to prove the offering and importance of music as if it is another cast member. >> Why you need to trust the creatives to know what will resonate with people. >> Why people believe you if you have a website and how that builds trust. >> The problem of using limited search terms and why we wouldn't do this across content platforms. Plus: Lynden shares the secret of whether Phil Collins was in the gorilla suit in THAT Cadbury's ad. How music can sell more cars than the offer of free petrol. Lynden also shares some of the best adverts that she's worked on. Then there's a bonus chat about AI and music. And Lynden shares a heartwarming story about the power of music within a care home. We make the case in this episode that Mr. Twin Sister is one of the most talented acts to come out of the last decade, with a look at their 2014 self-titled 3rd album. Having gone through some rough patches as a band in the previous year (parting ways with Domino Records, lead vocalist Andrea Estella's MS diagnosis, and the entire group surviving a harrowing car crash while touring in Florida), Mr. Twin Sister emerges on the other end with a renewed energy and a fresh sound to go along with their slightly altered name (they used to go by simply Twin Sister, and were one of the many dream pop buzz bands of 2010). Effortlessly and expertly blending jazz, disco, and house electronic with a distinctly 70s and 80s vibe, this record is a true hidden gem for music lovers who want to hear something unique and refreshing.
