Laura B. got sober at age 17 after 4 years of intensively developing her alcoholism into qualification for AA. In that first meeting, she picked up a desire chip that initiated her 37 years of sobriety as an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. A compelling aspect of Laura's story is that her father was in AA and her mother was in Al-Anon. They used the tools of their respective Programs to effectively deal with Laura's alcoholism, neither preaching nor trying to cajole Laura into quitting. They allowed her to ride her own disease to the bottom and, when she was finally done drinking, helped her get into inpatient treatment followed by AA. From the minute she first joined AA, Laura embraced the Program, learning from older members how to live a sober life to the fullest. Though a move to a west Texas town in the early years of her sobriety disrupted the quantity and continuity of her meetings, Laura persevered and kept her Program front and center in her life. She worked hard to hone her relationships with members of her AA community. The indispensable value of AA fellowship was demonstrated after Laura's father committed suicide (linked to his battle with clinical depression). Laura was enveloped in the same loving support she had been showing others. Meanwhile, the tragic occurrence of her father's death gave Laura pause to understand the differences between the alcoholism her father recovered from in AA and the disease of clinical depression that AA could not address. Laura continues her passionate commitment to share her understanding with others. Back living in Austin, Laura is very active in sponsorship and service to this day. Laura's willingness to share her story has been a fine gift to me and I'm thrilled to share it with you. It's a story that's both inspirational and intriguing. Last week, Consensys revealed that the SEC had concluded an investigation into Ethereum 2.0, referring to when Ethereum transitioned from a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake one. In this episode, Laura Brookover, senior counsel & head of litigation and investigations at Consensys, and Sam Enzer, partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel, explore the implications of this decision on Ether's status as a commodity versus a security, and why the SEC dropped the pursuit, including whether the shifting political winds played a role. Laura B is sharing the unique and rare story of being diagnosed with Addison's disease - a rare endocrine disorder that affects 1 in 10,000 people in the UK and is more common in women. Laura B was first diagnosed with premature ovarian failure, plummeting her into premature menopause in her early 30's. After suffering bizarre and life-halting symptoms she was finally diagnosed with Addison's. If left untreated this can be a life threatening disease and requires lifelong steroids in Laura's case. Laura shares some powerfully poignant messages as she has gone through the turbulent process of struggling to know her own body, fighting the stigma of disease and feeling 'broken'. But now, Laura is beginning to (in her own words) 'get her sparkle back'. There are some amazing insights into how the strength of mind and attitude to living with a life changing disease can help provide new focus in rebuilding your life after disease diagnosis. In this episode, Dr Amanda Kramer interviews Dr María Laura Böhm (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany). This episode explores María Laura's research on extractive industry activity in Latin America as a form of state-corporate crime. She outlines a variety of harms caused by the extractive industries that have significant consequences for the environment, individuals, and broader communities, such as environmental destruction, long term illness, displacement, and death. She explains how the causes of these harms are multifaceted and complex, but that the lack of regulation and control allows asymmetrical power relationships to flourish, enabling this type of state-corporate crime. While those with "equipping gifts" prepare others' heads and hearts for the work of ministry through discipleship, those with "service gifts" do the hands-and-feet work of ministry. Most of us have several spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit arranges in "clusters" that help us minister effectively to others in the Church. I've noticed a marked change in my clientele after going into private practice.[1] Of course I expected class differences-- I charge full fee and don't take insurance. But there are differences that are not as predictable as ‘has more money'. During residency I worked at a hospital Medicaid clinic and saw mostly poor, often chronically unemployed people. While monetary problems were a source of stress, they were not nearly as present in people's minds as someone from a middle-class upbringing might think. These people were used to going without. They were not trying to get more. The types of things they talked about were family problems, health problems, and trauma. So much trauma. People's ego-identity crises centered less on their accomplishments and more on their relationships. The patients I see now are mostly highly successful, highly educated, weathly people, most of whom care a lot about their careers. Their ego-identity crises center around their work and their position in life relative to others. There is a lot of concern about ‘the path'. ‘Did I go down the right path?' ‘Did I make a wrong turn?' There seems to be a great fear of making or having made a wrong decision, which can paralyze their ability to make future decisions. While this group is not without trauma, it is not what they wish to focus on. They will often be dismissive of its effects on them, noting that they clearly got over it in order to get where they are now. Which is, you know, in my office. Many of my new patients do NOT want to take medication. This is a large change from my patients at the Medicaid clinic who were always requesting more and different pills. And this difference is not because my new patients are less unhappy. They describe intense misery, even a wish to die, going on for months if not years, and yet they struggle through each day in their sisyphean ordeal. They ‘power through' until they can't. Until something gives. Then they come to me. I can think of several good reasons to have concerns about using medication. What are the long-term effects? Could this change my identity? What if this makes me ok with a shitty situation and then I don't fix an underlying problem? But these are not the typical concerns I hear raised. What most of my patients say is that they don't want to ‘rely' on a medication. They don't want to be the type of person who takes it. ‘That would mean there is something wrong with my brain.' Even though they are clearly very depressed, clearly suffering and hating every day, so long as they can push through without taking a pill they must be ‘ok' in some sense. Taking the pill would confirm there is actually something wrong. Taking the pill might mean they are more similar to the patients at the Medicaid clinic than they want to consider. What struck me about this was how people's desires to assume a certain identity – that of someone who didn't take medication – was more important to them than their actual lived experience. ‘This is your life.' And this is broader than to take or not take medication. People will suffer through horrible work situations in order to be the type or person who has that job. ‘If your job makes you want to kill yourself, shouldn't you consider quitting it before killing yourself?' ‘But I'm good at it.' Identity seems to be everything. Experience is there to tell you if you're on the right way to assuming the proper identity. If you go through the motions properly you can look the part. What's the difference between looking the part and being the person anyway? Now refusing medication would be one thing if they wanted to come for weekly therapy and talk through their problems. But many don't. They complain they don't have the time (and it's time,...

Why is it so hard to stick to healthy eating habits? Why is it that when I plan to only have 3 or 4 Oreos I end up eating the entire sleeve? Why am I feeling like crap when I am eating the foods that I enjoy and love? Does this sound familiar? This was pretty much Shannon's narrative before meeting with Laura! Healthy eating should be easier than it is. The reason it is so hard is because of the emotional ties that we have to food. There is a psychological connection to our food choices and why foods can hold so much power over us. In this interview, Laura B.
