Silicon Bites Ep302 | 2026-03-15 | Make it make sense. Iran helped Russia attack Ukraine, but Russia is also providing data to Iran to target U.S. military assets in its confrontation with Iran. Yet Trump is lifting oil sanctions on Russia. None of it makes sense, unless we accept that Trump is acting to benefit Russia, whether he is fully conscious of that or not. I'm inclined to believe he knows what he's doing, when he makes decisions that provide strategic advantage to Vladimir Putin. As the war evolved against Ukraine, Russia absorbed drone technology from Iran, the infamous Shaheed, scaled production, and according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy is now supplying Shahed drones back to Iran for use against the United States and Israel. Reuters, quoting Zelenskyy's CNN interview broadcast on March 15, says he called it “100% facts” that Iran has used Russian-made Shaheeds against U.S. bases. Reuters also added an important caveat: not every Shahed used in the region can be cleanly attributed from public evidence, and the exact manufacturer is not always clear. The strongest version of the claim is this: Zelenskyy says Russia is now feeding the very drone ecosystem that Iran once fed into Russia's war on Ukraine. Taiwan signs double taxation pact with Tuvalu Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has signed an agreement to avoid double taxation and donate funds to cover the maintenance costs of Tuvalu's first undersea cable. Russia has fired tens of thousands of Shaheds at Ukraine since it invaded its neighbor just over four years ago. In my recent article, I spoke to you about Mark Carney's wonderful talk at Davos and explained the structure he used to deliver it. Now let me tell you about how Volodymyr Zelenskyy's talk used the same format in his emotional appeal to Europe and the World for help for his people. His opening lines followed a classic format used by all good speakers. He speaks about something familiar to the audience that would immediately get their attention. Then he proceeded to talk about something that would gain their interest. See how he did this below: Attention: "Dear friends, everyone remembers the great American film, "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell, yes, but no one would want to live like that, repeating the same thing for weeks, months, and, of course, for years." Interest: "And yet, that's exactly how we live now. It's our life and every Forum like this one proves it. Just last year, here in Davos, I ended my speech with the words, Europe needs to know how to defend itself. A year has passed and nothing has changed. We are still in a situation where I must say the same words, but why?" Main Body of the talk: This would be what I call the conviction part of the talk. He then provided examples of where countries could take action. A year has passed and nothing has happened Things move faster than Europe's decision making Europe must build a better world Without action there is no tomorrow Zelenskyy provides lots of examples of how support could be provided to Ukraine, and I will leave it to you to listen to his speech after reading this article. In my view, he provided too many suggestions, which often leads people to think this is insurmountable and so end up doing nothing. There is an old Irish proverb which says 'Do not send a man into a shed full of shovels and ask him to take his pick.' Suggesting a desired outcome is a critical part of all speeches that call for Action Desirable Outcome: "Ukraine is ready to help with anything that is needed to guarantee peace and prevent destruction. We are ready to help others become stronger than they are now. We are ready to be part of a Europe that truly matters, a Europe of real power, Today, we need that power to protect our own independence, but you need Ukraine's independence too, because tomorrow, you may have to defend your way of life, and when Ukraine is with you, no one will wipe their feet on you and you will always have a way to act and act in time." Call for Action: Here, Zelenskyy is pleading with powerful people to take action, and he ends his speech by bringing us back to where he started, appealing to leaders to act. "This is very important, act in time. Dear friends, today is one of the last days of Davos, though definitely not the last Davos, of course, and everyone agrees on that and many people believe that somehow things will work out on their own, but we cannot rely on 'somehow' for real security." "Faith is not enough. Faith in a partner in a lucky turn of events, no intellectual discussions are capable of stopping wars, we need action, world order comes from action and we just need the courage to act. Without action now, there is no tomorrow. Let's end this Groundhog Day, and yes, it's possible." Those differences in world view, opinion, policy, and sense of urgency between America and our allies are bubbling up publicly. I don't think the friction is or will be inconsequential. In fact, I would posit that the hairline cracks we hear about, in terms of NATO cooperation and membership, will inevitably become full fledged fissures. There are any number of pressure points between this administration and our ANO's (allies in name only) most notably the UK. Saber rattling has become the norm in communiques from Germany, the UK, and the EU. Calls for a “European only” Army and Navy have come from the upper and middle echelons of the military in several NATO member nations in Europe. The Europeans are shocked and outraged by our statements and concerns about Greenland. Now I could be wrong; but it seems that NATO's members are viewing our actions in Venezuela as well as Trump's position that Ukraine is largely a Euro problem, and his vision that the “Donroe” doctrine should be a precursor to a solid military defense strategy as well as a strategic trading block composed by countries in the Western Hemisphere as an emerging existential threat. And indeed it is. We have all seen examples that, by now prove conclusively, that Trump and his advisers are some of the best “tea leaf” readers ever. I honestly think this administration sees the rapid cultural, political, and social deterioration in Europe (Germany, Austria, France, the UK) and other Western nations (Australia and NZ) as harbingers and not one off's. And as such, I believe Trump and his team have concluded that these EU countries have reached a point of no return in every measure that matters. I believe the head butting will, by the end of Trump's term, deteriorate or accelerate to locking horns with former allies and our eventual departure from them as a bloc in favor of the Western Hemisphere as a replacement block. The “Donroe” doctrine says as much. I believe Trump would prefer to capitalize on Geography. That is to say a land mass that stretches from the Arctic circle to the Antarctic circle with North America and South America in between. I believe he sees that as something America can control, protect, and develop. How this will play out, I'm not sure. But I believe he is quietly preparing an exit ramp for our departure from NATO per se. It will be interesting. He will leave office and hand this massive initiative to Vance and Rubio; confident in their judgment and ability to execute.
