Based on agency theory, signaling theory, and moral capital theory, we examine whether and how corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance influences firms' political risk disclosure. We also examine the impact of such disclosure on institutional ownership and financial analysts' forecast dispersion and forecast error and whether the impact depends on CSR performance. We find that stronger CSR performers provide less disclosure of political risk than weaker CSR performers, suggesting that CSR performance is a substitute for political risk disclosure. We find that political risk disclosure is associated with lower percentage of ownership by institutional investors with long-term investment horizons and higher analyst forecast dispersion and forecast error. However, we find that CSR performance cancels out the negative impact of political risk disclosure on institutional ownership and analyst forecast dispersion/error, suggesting that institutional investors and financial analysts put less weight on such disclosure issued by more CSR-oriented firms.

Today's episode is an absolute blast. That's because the person I am talking to is unique. And I think that's because he spent quite a large proportion of his career a long way outside insurance and discovered our sector relatively late. But the crucial point is that it wasn't that late. Graham Elliot CEO of Crux Underwriting had enough experience outside the sector not to be too dyed in the wool and full of industry preconceptions, but he has been with us long enough to have had time to have already made a serious entrepreneurial impact on our sector at Oxygen Insurance Brokers, Aqua Underwriting and Azur Group. I first met him about eight years ago at the beginning of the insurtech boom and found him incredibly valuable as someone who was very eloquent and adept at explaining the benefits of technology to a traditional insurance audience in words it could understand. Graham's latest venture is Crux Underwriting, a new Lloyd's MGA he has set up with experienced Political Risk and Political Violence underwriter, Mike O'Connor. But this podcast is way broader than Crux's opening line of business. Our talk is an incredibly wide-ranging tour of the most advanced thinking around how global wholesale and specialty insurance and reinsurance is set to develop in the digital age that is currently dawning. AI, algorithmic trading, genuinely realtime digitised underwriting systems and the reasons behind the boom in MGAs are all discussed in great detail. If you still haven't quite got your head around where the market is likely to be heading after our digital big bang is finally reached, I recommend this talk as a wonderful place to start. Graham is charismatic and charming and I guarantee it won't be long before your imagination is sparked and you are swept up in the positive appreciation of some of the enormous opportunities that are available to smart entrepreneurs in today's market. This is a great way to start the year. LINKS We thank our Special Episode sponsor Stephens Rickard: https://www.stephensrickard.com/

Today's podcast is all about the insurance of political risk and violence and we are going to come at this subject from all angles. This episode is intended to be an all-round masterclass for anyone with an interest in these fascinating and fast-growing specialist lines of business. Is the world a riskier place and are risks going to remain insurable? And where is most of the new demand of the coming decades going to be coming from? All is examined in detail. Much has been made of the exceptional number of elections taking place in global democracies in 2024 as another possible source of political complications and conflict. Africa has also been highlighted as a potentially huge new source of demand, driven by the global transition to net zero carbon emissions and this goal's need for the rare earth metals that are to be found in abundance in many of its Southern and Eastern States. But it's no secret that many of Africa's most mineral-rich nations with the largest development potential are also places where political stability can be in short supply. For this reason, I talk to Lara Wolfe, Senior Sub-Saharan Africa Risk Analyst at risk consultancy BMI, which is part of the Fitch Group. (Pictured Top) This market sounds like the ideal territory for brave underwriters to be operating in and this is where the expertise of Roddy Barnett (Pictured bottom), Head of Political Risks and Trade Credit at Beazley is invaluable. Finally, with the help of Beazley's Head of Political Risk and Violence Claims, Alex Hill, (pictured middle) we'll learn how the political risk product actually works on the. I am very pleased with how this first thematic documentary-style podcast has turned out – I do hope you enjoy it and find it useful. We see five key overlapping themes for the year ahead. In this episode, we explore the theme of geopolitical reordering.   National interest objectives will influence reordering of relationships between countries and in multilateral forums, impacting global challenges, flows of trade, and investment. An important indicator underlying the direction of these risks in 2024 will be the outcomes of more than 70 scheduled elections — half of which will be presidential elections. The outcomes will have major implications for policy direction and priorities.   Download the complimentary strategic report, 2024: A disjointed world: https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/mi/Info/1123/2024-disjointed-world.html   Speakers: Laurence Allan Head of the Europe/CIS Insights and Analysis, S&P Global Market Intelligence Kristen Hallam Lead Content Strategist, S&P Global Market Intelligence

2023 was a year of recovery, giving the air of a return to normal. Unfortunately, normal for supply chains means guiding operations through the middle of a storm of potential disruptions. Some are already visible, including the knock-on from conflict in the Middle East and the prospect of a renewed wave of trade protectionism. Others will emerge by surprise.   Our experts discuss the prospects for trade and supply chains in 2024, with topics including: Physical operations present the biggest challenges, with conflict in the Middle East and climate change disrupting shipping networks. The prospect of accidents in the South China Sea triggering further challenges cannot be ruled out. Labor strikes may generate further friction. Politics introduces a renewed round of uncertainty thanks to widespread elections. The rise of protectionism and retaliation which got underway in 2023 may spread in 2024 with the real impact only coming in 2025. The cost of environmental policies may widen and rise. More positively there's the prospect of new trade deals ahead. Supply chain and trade activity will stabilize and should recover, particularly in hard-hit non-AI electronics. Decision-makers can prepare by investing in resilience and agility, but it appears investments in risk mitigation alone aren't being prioritized with the result that firms may be sleep-walking into the next round of disruptions. Even in our increasingly global economy, it‘s something that doesn't happen very often — but when it does, can cause a cascade of both financial and logistical challenges: a trade embargo. And although this story may seem ripped right from today's headlines, it actually unfolded almost 10 years ago, when Russia enacted an embargo against several western nations back in 2014. On this episode of Wheel of Risk, presented by Allianz Trade, host Alix McCabe is joined by Joe Pernica, the Chief Operating Officer of Ronald A. Chisholm Limited, which had more than $10 million worth of meat en route to a customer in Russia when the embargo came down. It could have been a devastating blow for the Toronto-based company, but thankfully Chisholm was prepared for just such an eventuality. Alix and Joe will also hear from Steve Georgetti, Director of Risk Underwriting for the Americas at Allianz Trade, who explains what other companies can learn from Chisholm's story, and which red flags to watch out for to avoid ending up in a similar situation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
