June joined us for a conversation recently, and recorded an exclusive bonus track in WNYC's studio five. So today, we present Valerie June's cover of Lightnin' Thomas's 'The Life I Used To Live.' June will play The Town Hall on May 6.

L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru K, so naturally, they went with L.Sonic contributors featured in Lightnin' Licks Radio's forty-third episode include: Beastie Boys, National Public Radio, James Todd Smith, Ol' Burger Beats, Prince Paul, De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Method Man, John Ussery. In this episode of The Blues Guitar Show, we dive deep into the life, legacy, and unmistakable style of Lightnin' Hopkins—one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time. From his early days in rural Texas, learning from legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson, to his rise as a prolific recording artist with over 800 songs, Hopkins shaped the sound of Texas blues like no one else.We break down his unique guitar style, his loose, improvisational approach to rhythm, and his signature boogie bass lines that made his playing instantly recognizable. We'll also explore the tunings and techniques that set him apart, his go-to Gibson acoustics and hollow-body electrics, and how his raw, percussive fingerpicking continues to inspire guitarists today. If you love blues guitar and want to get inside the mind (and fingers) of one of its greatest players, this episode is for you! Tune in, grab your guitar, and get ready to unlock the sound of Lightnin' Hopkins.Download the Triad Method: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/the-triad-method/Support the showTo get your hands on THE TRIAD METHOD: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/product/the-triad-method/Become a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeHead over to www.thebluesguitarshow.com to subscribe to the mailing list

The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. The world may be on fire, but at least baseball is returning. That's some welcome good news. The cleats clickin', the mitts poppin', the bats crackin'...oh man! The sounds of this soon-to-be-season are as satisfying as she gets, folks! In honor of our Detroit Tigers' Grapefruit League season kicking off (acceptable mixed-sports metaphor) today, we're placing a refreshing treat in our episode feed.Deon created the original pilot episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio in May of 2019. He did so to test all of the music and recording equipment in the basement and also to convince Jay that their stories could ultimately be rendered as a sonically palatable product, therefore presenting podcasting as a worthwhile endeavor. Well...it worked! Jay agreed to partner with Deon thus Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast was born. This is that fateful pilot episode.Although it doesn't sound too similar to what the podcast would eventually become as far as format is concerned, the storytelling element was strong from day one, with vinyl records and other found-sound / field recordings / archival audio sources playing an important role in the story. If you haven't already heard this episode and you enjoy baseball, poetry, or stories of childhood memories, give it a listen. We think it's pretty cool. When many Michiganders think spring, we think baseball. And many spring-loving, baseball-minded Mitten-dwellers have a special place in their hearts for Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Detroit Tigers for many generations. This episode was written and recorded a few days after news broke that Ernie's widow Lulu had passed away at the age of 99, not long before the 9th anniversary of her legendary broadcaster husband's death. We hope you enjoy it.Oh, and...Go Tigers.

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Send us a textOn this episode, guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer Dave Alvin (The Blasters, X, The Knitters, The Third Mind, solo) digs deep into the 1969 Underground Blues compilation album. 1985. Back To The Future would become the highest grossing film of the year, the Live Aid benefit would be hosted simultaneously in 2 different venues on 2 different continents, and the Coca-Cola Company would experience a catastrophic failure with “New Coke” by (once again) failing to put its namesake ingredient from the ORIGINAL “Original Formula” back in their legendary beverage. We are well aware that there are multiple listicles already out there featuring the “Top 20 Metal Albums of 1985” because 40 years is quite the chronological landmark. Nevertheless, we still felt compelled to construct our own list. It's not necessarily all thrash, but it's not all “gloves of shame” either. In short, it's a pretty substantial sampler of the albums that WE feel represent everything great about metal in1985. It's time to shake off those “cobwebs” and prepare for some “extraordinary news” as well as “a story of redemption and forgiveness” regarding a previous negative review we received. Learn about the earliest documented “fake news” regarding Elizabeth Bathory's alleged use of “skin conditioner” and get a sneak preview of the new album from “Dick Johnson & The Ball Brothers” when you JOIN US for the TOP 20 METAL ALBUMS OF 1985. Selección musical: 🎶 The Twelve Days of Yaksmas, de Ren & Stimpy's Crock O' Christmas 🎶 Happy New Year, de Lightnin' Hopkins
Songwriter, blues guitarist and singer Chris Smither joins me on the show today. I had the pleasure of meeting Chris and playing with him this past summer at a festival, and he really was a force of nature. He had an incredible groove between his guitar lines and his powerful foot, all brought together with a voice that has developed so much character over the years it just oozes out of him. Chris grew up in New Orleans, but as you'll hear, doesn't totally identify musically with his hometown. He's spent most of his career based out of the Massachusetts area, and developed his style and sound in the folk clubs of Boston and Cambridge. His songwriting style owes as much to others from that era and scene as it does to blues songwriters like Lightnin' Hopkins, Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James. He manages to pull something off which I think is difficult and very unique - he's developed a style of songwriting that seems to be right out of that era of the classic folk/blues tradition, but without being even the slightest bit derivative of those artists that came before him. He wrote the songs “Love Me Like A Man” and “I Feel The Same” that became staples in Bonnie Raitt's career and repertoire, not to mention Diana Krall also cutting “Love Me Like A Man”. His recording career began in 1971 with the album “I'm a Stranger, Too!” at which time he was label-mates with Townes Van Zandt. He's been a prolific artist ever sonce then, with a few personal low times where he shied away from making new records. But since the 90's he's been extremely consistent with a new record every year or two. His latest is called “All About The Bones” and is one of his best. Chris is one of those rare artists that just seems to keep getting better, even into his 80's. I had a great conversation with him from his home on a rare break from the road, and we had a chance to dig into all of his history and record-making process. You can keep up with Chris and all his latest news and extensive touring over at smither.com - please enjoy my conversation with Chris Smither! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Hear the final episode in our two-part series celebrating the life and music of Barbara Dane, a legendary, folk, blues, and jazz singer who used her voice to advocate for social justice and civil rights. Dane passed away in October of 2024, she was 97 years old. Listen to a 2018 interview Dane recorded with WFYI's Kyle Long, along with rare recordings from her discography. Barbara Dane began singing on the picket lines of Detroit as a teenager. Politics and activism would remain a central focus of her music. She would go on to record for the biggest labels in American music and collaborate with iconic artists, including Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, and Lightnin' Hopkins. At the height of the 1960s folk music boom, Bob Dylan called Dane a hero. But Dane never experienced the commercial success of her folk singing peers like Dylan. She refused to compromise her principles for corporate record companies, which led Dane to start her own label in the 1970s, Paredon Records. Through her Paredon label, Dane issued revolutionary music from Palestine, Vietnam, and Cuba. She also released her own recordings on the label, including the 1973 album “I Hate the Capitalist System”. On this edition, we'll discuss Dane's work with Paredon, and her connection to Bob Dylan.

Barry and Abigail discuss Farmhouse by Phish and sample Neon Hazy IPA, Magical Theme Park Whip, and Strawberry Lemonade Gluten Free Sour from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Our beer comes to us today from Kim Nyborg. Abigail referenced that she and Kim guest starred in Making Podcasts Great Again at Stand Up! Pod Jam. The full episode is on Patreon but you can listen to the free preview here. Abigail declared that Heavy Things was the Mambo No. 5 of this album. Read about the Jibboo, a fictional Dr. Seuss creature. In our episode Dorks on Corks: Un-Cork-Ed (Dread Zeppelin and Lakeridge Winery), Abigail previously entered Piper into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Black Mountain Side by Dread Zeppelin. Barry compared the guitar harmonics in The Inlaw Josie Wales to those in For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield. Abigail compared the opening of First Tube to the opening of Lightnin' Hopkins by R.E.M. Up next… Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Halloween Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. I'm thinking about ecclesiology today. Rarely do. But a combination of J.B. Priestley's "low anthropology", a couple of recent lightning bolts from outside space and (present) time, and a fresh glimpse of the touching statue of "The Compassionate Christ" outside Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham: Well, they got me thinking of what the Christian Church is centrally and anchoredly about. Add to that the third verse of Lou Christie's number-one song from 1966, "Lightnin' Strikes"; and it's probably all there. One's ecclesiology, I mean. "Dangerous Corner" by J.B. Priestley, which was first performed in London in 1932, unmasks the human tragedy of self-serving, manipulation, and deception in about as unrelieved a manner as could be imagined. The last scene but one, which leads directly to a character's suicide, surely rips the curtain off our world's endemic conspiratorial malice. It is almost a pure enactment of the "low anthropology" that is endemic to us. But the playwright offers us no hope. He actually, explicitly dismisses the antidote of faith in God. I so want to enter that scene myself, speaking sincerely and personally, and address the desperate "hero". He's got it mostly right, you see; his diagnosis is accurate. But we believe in God -- and not a "deistic"/hands-off sort of force, but rather: Pure Empathy, Pure Sympathy, Pure Mercy, Pure Grace. Our ecclesiology, therefore, is the Church, in whatever form, as Embodiment of One-Way Love. That's PZ's ecclesiology. That's Lou Christie's "chapel in the pines" (1966). That's the churches of refuge at the end of War of the Worlds (1953), that's 'Mr. Carpenter' in Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), that's the Isaiah 2, verse 4 climax of The Colossus of New York (1958), that's the hymn chorale at the end of The Space Children (1958), that's the Christ-figure at the conclusion of The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). And so it goes. When the curtain is ripped away on life as it really is and people as they really are, all that's needed is One Helping Hand, One "Next Voice You Hear" (1951), One... Man from Galilee (Ocean, 1971/Elvis, 1972), One Jesus Christ Superstar. LUV U.

Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru J, so naturally, they went with K. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast presents an interview with Alan Swyer, an award-winning filmmaker whose recent documentaries have dealt with Eastern spirituality in the Western world, the criminal justice system, diabetes, boxing, singer Billy Vera, and beyond. In the realm of music, among his productions is an album of Ray Charles love songs. His novel The Beard was recently published by Harvard Square Editions. His latest documentary, When Houston Had The Blues — the focus of this episode — shines a bright light on a vibrant Black music scene that has never gotten its just due…until now. Houston's early and indelible mark on American music and the blues — often overlooked despite its rich history — is celebrated in the soulful, feature-length documentary, When Houston Had the Blues. While Houston may not come to most people's minds as a major “music city” like Memphis, Chicago or New Orleans, it has a legacy that few other cities can match. Years before Elvis hit the charts with “Hound Dog,” it was originally recorded by Houston's Big Mama Thornton (arguably the defining version). And long before Motown, Houston was home to one of the most successful Black music empires in the country. When Houston Had the Blues features an extensive collection of photos from the '40s and ‘50s and vintage/contemporary performances by Bobby “Blue” Bland, Chic “Juke Boy” Bonner, Charles Brown, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Jewel Brown, C.J. Chenier, Arnett Cobb, Albert Collins, Diunna Greenleaf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Albert King, Freddie King, Trudy Lynn, David “Guitar Shorty” Kearney, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, Katie Webster aka The Swamp Boogie Queen, Don Wilkerson and more. With a unique timber and flavor unlike any other town in America, even other Texan cities, Houston's blues scene — ranging from “gut bucket” to highly sophisticated — has long been a melting pot of music, influenced by salsa, tejano, cajun, zydeco (then known as la-la), jazz, country and, later, rock ‘n' roll. Stream Houston Had The Blues on iTunes / Apple TV. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
