Michael made $65,000 last year working 15 to 20 hours a week, after she clocked out of her full-time job.She is not quitting that job. The benefits are good, she loves the work, and I have never once told her she should leave. What she built is a full-time income on part-time hours, and she did it with an ugly proposal and five marketing minutes a day.In this Student Spotlight, Michael walks through the whole thing: the "expensive jobby" she was running before she learned ads, the exact 45-day mark when clients started booking, the two-hour order of operations she runs every weeknight, and the moment she realized she was underpricing because she kept telling herself "this isn't my money."If you have been using your job as the reason you cannot start, y'all, this episode takes that excuse right off the table. In this episode, you'll learn:The 45-day marketing minutes rule, and why Michael's first client landed almost exactly on scheduleWhy five marketing minutes a day beats fifteen (she tried fifteen first, and it did not stick)The exact 4-step order she runs her two hours in, and why most people do it backwardsHow to plan your week for the RESULT instead of the to-do listWhy the ugly proposal and ugly Work With Me page never cost her a single client in two yearsThe reason consuming more information keeps you safe but keeps you brokeWhat it took to raise her prices when her brain kept saying "this isn't my money, it's someone else's"Why referrals are wonderful but are never a strategy (she lived through the dip)Mentioned in this episode:Strategist Society: thestrategistsociety.comFree training, the three elements of a successful freelance ad management business: brandimowles.com/100kConversions for Clients: conversionsforclients.comThe 2020 income report episodes (the $250K to $1.2 million documentation Michael credits as the reason she started) brandimowles.com/incomeReady to scale past $10K months?Strategist Society is where Michael gets the one-on-one Voxer support, the private podcast, and the strategy feedback that turned her side income into a full-time income. Lauren Weinbaum didn't leave a job she hated. She left one she loved, because a client offered to hire her company before she'd even started one. In this episode, the founder and president of Weinbaum Management Group walks through how a one-way flight to LAX and a single conversation turned into a 13-year run in aviation and large commercial construction. We get into the decisions most founders don't talk about. How Lauren watched the 2008 crash freeze high-rises mid-skyline and used it to redesign her career around bond-funded public work. Why she grows slowly and refuses debt. How she thinks about A, B, and C players on a small team. And the mindset shift that comes with trading "am I going to make it" for "do we have the right culture and the right clients." This one is for AEC firm leaders, women building careers in construction, and anyone weighing the jump from a stable seat to running their own thing. It's honest about the mental load, the guilt, and what it actually takes to keep a firm healthy.   About Lauren Weinbaum Lauren is the founder and president of Weinbaum Management Group (WMG, Inc.), an owner's representation and construction management firm specializing in aviation and large commercial projects. She leads all business development, program and project management, estimating, scheduling, and bidding for the firm. With more than 18 years in the industry, Lauren built her foundation on major capital programs including the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. She grew up on a working pig and cattle farm in Illinois and started working for her dad at nine. What We Cover Introduction and Lauren's path from a Midwest farm to aviation construction Watching the 2008 crash halt private projects, and pivoting to bond-funded work for stability The one-way flight to LAX and the client conversation that started WMG Leading under pressure on a billion-dollar airport program with competing interests Being a working mom as a productivity edge, and guarding against distraction and mental load Building a small team: A, B, and C players, and why "10 percent of the work" still matters Growing without debt, managing cash flow strictly, and learning to say no to the wrong work Why the right life partner is a business decision What's next for WMG: LAWA with Paslay Management Group, the Centurion Lounge at LAX, and expansion beyond California Where to find Lauren and closing thoughts   Key Takeaways Stability is a strategy you can design. Lauren deliberately moved toward bond-funded public projects because that money rarely defaults, and it insulated her from the private-market swings that wiped out her peers in 2008. Gamble on yourself. If you're going to take a risk, take it on your own effort and judgment rather than betting on someone else's company or timing. Grow at the speed of your cash, not your ambition. Waiting until you can cover a new hire before you make it is slower, but it keeps you out of debt and off the payroll cliff. Saying no protects your brand. Taking work you don't have the competent staff to execute costs more than the revenue is worth. Never be too good to call people back. In a distracted industry, basic follow-through is a competitive advantage.   Resources + Links WMG website: https://wmgconsult.com Lauren on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauren-weinbaum-wmg/ WMG on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/wmgconsult/

Are you working to build an additional stream of income outside your full-time role but struggling to get people to actually book your services? Have you been having initial conversations and sharing what you do, only to find that nobody is moving forward? What if the shift needed to land your very first paying client is far simpler than the complex strategies you are trying to figure out? In today's episode, I am taking you inside my coaching room to share the exact breakthrough a recent client experienced. As a talented writer and communicator, she had deep expertise but spent months struggling to secure bookings from people new to her world. Everything changed in just two weeks after we made one fundamental shift in her approach, resulting in her signing her very first client. I wanted to unpack this specific process because it highlights exactly what is possible when you take the right action in the right order. It is the very same framework I walk my clients through inside the Portfolio Career Academy to help them transition from overthinking to real, tangible execution. Many professionals normalise their years of experience, glossing over the incredible insights and projects that others would gladly pay for. By learning how to package your existing value and activating your awareness, you can transform casual networking conversations into paid engagements. What you will learn in this episodeYou cannot sell what you cannot see. Most of us bury our best material and unique wins in past roles, assuming it is just part of the job. Listing every role and identifying the repeating patterns is the key to uncovering the strengths you can leverage with ease. Value is not the same as an offer. Having immense skill is one thing, but you must package it into something people want to buy right now. Instead of trying to build a massive program from day one, focusing on what people will pay for the fastest allows you to prove your concept. Clarity changes what you notice. When you define your specific offer, you activate the reticular activating system in your brain. This mental filter completely shifts your awareness, allowing you to hear opportunities everywhere and recognise the exact language people use to describe their problems. Ready to build your additional stream of income with intention? The Portfolio Career Academy founding cohort officially starts this September. If you are an ambitious mid-career woman ready monetise your expertise outside of your nine-to-five book your call today to explore if the program is the right fit for you. Send us Fan MailInvest in Yourself and Your Career:Community — Join our Network for mid-career women redesigning what's next in their careersCoaching — Apply for The Portfolio Career Academy. This presentation by Dr. Jessica ChenFeng, PhD, LMFT, titled "A Long Faithfulness Across Generations: Rupture & Repair in Asian American Families," was recorded on April 10, 2026. The lecture was part of the 2026 conference "Our Flourishing, Our Faith: Navigating Rupture and Repair in Asian American Christian Communities," presented by the Center for Asian American Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary and the Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. You can learn more about this conference here: https://ourflourishing.org/.Family rupture in Asian American contexts is shaped by immigration narratives, cultural scripts, and intergenerational silence that can sometimes fuel disconnect and distance. This plenary explores the sources of familial rupture and offers a multi-layered framework for repair that integrates intrapersonal reflection, neurobiological regulation, and relational attunement while honoring generational distinctions and Asian American relational ethics. The conversation will be grounded in the reality that repair is sanctification work—a decades-long journey across seasons of life that finds its sustaining hope not in resolution but in Christ who came to give us fullness of life.Jessica ChenFeng, PhD, LMFT is an associate professor of marriage and family therapy and DMFT program chair at Fuller Theological Seminary, and an associate editor for Family Process journal. She has been a practicing MFT for almost 20 years and consults with academic, healthcare and church organizations to improve the well-being of people within their communities. Her research and clinical work center around social contextual intersections of race, gender, generation, trauma, and spirituality. This episode sits right at the intersection of hustle culture, burnout, and the revenue truth nobody in the female founder space is talking about.Inside the EpisodeThe Daughter Question That Changed Everything: Natalie was sitting at her desk when her six-year-old daughter looked up at her and asked, "Mommy, do you like your job?" She did not want to lie. That single moment catapulted an entire career pivot, and the lesson underneath it is one every woman building something needs to hear. The Leaky Bucket Problem: Most founders are pouring everything into sales, launches, and visibility while their existing clients quietly leak out the back. Natalie breaks down what a leaky bucket actually looks like in a real business and why fixing it is always faster than finding new clients. The Revenue Framework Flywheel: Forget one-time transactions. Natalie walks through the continuous loop of world-class experience, value realization, engagement, expansion, and referral that turns two or three clients into a scalable, compounding business without burning out.The First Client is the Hardest: For the woman sitting at three clients wondering how she will ever scale, Natalie has a reframe that will shift your entire strategy. Every client you land should generate five more. Here is exactly how that math works.Systems Are Not Boring, They Are Your Freedom: Natalie made 12-hour days and weekend work the norm after leaving corporate until she realized she had left a job she hated to create another one. Learn how simplifying your systems, starting with onboarding, is the thing that actually gives you your life back. The Onboarding Moment Nobody Gets Right: The moment right after someone pays you is the most critical moment in the entire customer journey. Fractional work is exploding — and it's still confusing for a lot of corporate escapees. In this Featured Speaker session inside the Escapee Collective, John Arms breaks down Fractional 101 in plain English: what fractional really is, who it's for, how to get clients (spoiler: it's not campaigns), and what you can realistically charge. If you're still in corporate, recently laid off, or already freelancing and want more stability, this is the clearest “how it works” primer you'll hear. What you'll learn • The “W2 → 1099 bridge” and why more people are getting pushed across it • Why fractional is mostly a referral-based business (and what to do with that) • The mindset shift: conversations, not campaigns • John's simple relationship model: the “10-person circle” (fractionals, independents, super-connectors) • What companies actually care about (hint: pain, not the definition of fractional) • Typical pricing and why fractional often lands in the $8K–$10K/month retainer range • Why fractional is proactive leadership, not “wait to be told what to do” • The “project first” entry strategy — and why it usually turns into ongoing leadership • How to reconnect with old contacts without being weird or salesy • The core principle: get involved with other people's successNotable moments / lines you'll remember • “You'll work for the people you get referred to.” • “Referrals come from conversations, not campaigns.” • “Fractional is leadership — solve it and keep it solved.” • “Most barriers are fear and assumptions… it's hard work, but it's not complicated.”Resources mentioned • The Go-Giver (Bob Burg) • The NCG Factor (Larry Kaufman — Network, Connect, Give)

Why do so many accomplished professionals leave corporate careers feeling confident in their expertise, only to second guess themselves when it comes to sales and pricing as entrepreneurs? In this episode, Deb Boulanger and Peter Svenneby talk honestly about what changes after the corporate title is gone. They explore the uncomfortable middle ground between purpose and profit, where self worth, visibility, and money start to collide. The conversation moves through the difference between scarcity thinking and building from abundance, why relationships matter more than polished pitches, and how sales can feel aligned instead of performative. They also address one of the hardest parts of the transition for women entrepreneurs, pricing with confidence in a market full of comparison and noise. This episode is not about tactics or hacks.
