No doubt, the global economy continues to be erratic, and, as a side note, if you're thinking of ballmaxxing, you might want to think again. On the other end of the world, scientists are alarmed as the Thwaites Glacier (aka the Doomsday Glacier) starts to break apart rapidly, the WHO is being asked to call the climate crisis a global health emergency, Greenland ice melt has surged sixfold and scientists are alarmed, the insect apocalypse has been linked to malnutrition and stunting in Nepal, there are 170 trillion (at a minimum) pieces of plastic in the world's oceans, and our rivers are becoming depleted of oxygen. Tulipán Zsuzsanna a Műcsarnok kurátora az „Arcodat keresem” című kiállításról beszél, amely Olasz Ferenc Balázs Béla-díjas fotográfus és filmrendező hat évtizedes munkásságát mutatja be. A tárlat 2026. január 18-ig látható a Műcsarnokban, és három teremben tárja a közönség elé a magyar táj és kultúra szakrális emlékeit. A kiállítás középpontjában a vallásos néphagyomány tárgyi öröksége áll: út menti keresztek, sírjelek, szobrok, kálváriák és templomi motívumok, amelyek a magyarság lelki térképét rajzolják meg. A képekben a hit, a csend és az elmúlás egyszerre van jelen, mégis mindegyik képben ott a megőrzés szándéka. Olasz Ferenc az egri Tanárképző Főiskolán, majd a szegedi József Attila Tudományegyetemen végez, és fiatal tanárként kezd fényképezni. Első portréalanyai a falusi emberek, szomszédok, Alsópáhok idős lakói, majd házaik, udvaraik, a kőkeresztek és a Máriákat ábrázoló szobrok kerülnek a lencséje elé. Innen indul az a fotográfusi vándorút, amely hat évtizeden átível. A művész nem dokumentál, hanem érzéseket és hangulatokat rögzít, a látványt meditatív tapasztalattá alakítja. A kiállítás címe – „Arcodat keresem” – Canterbury Szent Anzelm gondolatát idézi, aki az isteni arc megismerésének vágyáról ír. Ez a keresés Olasz Ferenc művészi hitvallása is: minden fotó egy belső ima, egy kísérlet az isteni jelenlét megörökítésére a földi világban. A fotográfus szavaival: „Kincseket örökítek meg, melyek az ezeréves Magyarország kultúrájának bizonyítékai, és amelyek örökre emlékeztetnek ismeretlen mesterek Isten-dicséretére.” A kiállítás egyszerre fotóművészeti és lelki élmény. A képekben a természet, az emberi kéz és az isteni szándék egybefonódik. A látogató nemcsak képeket lát, hanem egy csendes elmélkedés részévé válik. Olasz Ferenc művei meditációk: a hitről, az elmúlásról és a lélek csöndjéről. Zsuzsanna beszél arról is, hogyan születik meg a tárlat koncepciója, és milyen szellemi munka húzódik meg a képek válogatása mögött. Ennek különös jelentőséget adhat, hogy május 18-án lezajlik a romániai választások második fordulója. La levatrice di Nagyrév racconta un fatto di cronaca realmente avvenuto tra le due guerre mondiali, un episodio che sconvolse l'Europa non solo per l'efferatezza dei crimini, ma anche per un inedito capovolgimento dei ruoli: le donne uccidono gli uomini, si vendicano. Superstizione, violenze, miseria e soprusi sono i protagonisti delle vite che si incrociano in questo affresco rurale, dove a fare le spese di appetiti e frustrazioni sono sempre le donne. Le regole patriarcali della comunità magiara e le meschinità dell'animo umano creano situazioni insostenibili e sofferenze ingiustificabili per mogli e figlie, anziane e ragazze. Personaggio chiave, intorno al quale girano le storie di Nagyrév, è la misteriosa Zsuzsanna, levatrice dal passato fumoso, spesso etichettata come «strega» dai suoi concittadini, temuta e, ogni tanto, rispettata, una figura carismatica, rarissimo esempio di donna emancipata, cui molte «sorelle» chiedono aiuto per risolvere i guai che hanno dentro casa: gravate da inganni, stupri e sottomissioni, le vittime hanno deciso di alzare la testa. I första delen om Zsuzsanna Fazekas pratar killarna om hur livet var i Nagyrév och hur barnafödandet började öka i byn fast allas män stred i första världskriget. Fort d'une majorité absolue au Parlement hongrois, Viktor Orban entretient des relations tumultueuses avec Bruxelles, qui continue de bloquer quelque 20 milliards d'euros de fonds, en raison des atteintes répétées à l'État de droit. En croisade contre les valeurs libérales de l'UE, le dirigeant hongrois entend bien changer l'Union de l'intérieur. Son parti mène la course en tête pour les élections européennes du 9 juin. Le Fidesz, qui avait obtenu 12 sièges sur 21 lors du scrutin précédent, espère en emporter autant. Après avoir quitté le Parti populaire européen en 2021, ses élus pourraient rejoindre l'un des grands groupes de l'extrême-droite au Parlement de Strasbourg. De nos envoyés spéciaux,« Il faut renverser toute la clique, en commençant par Ursula ! Qu'est-ce qu'elle a trafiqué avec ces histoires de vaccins ? À Bruxelles, ils travaillent contre la Hongrie et ils bloquent les fonds qui nous reviennent », maugrée Zsuzsanna, une retraitée, arrivée avec quelques minutes de retard à un rassemblement électoral organisé par le Fidesz, dans un quartier résidentiel du sud-est de Budapest.Si cette fidèle électrice du Fidesz, qui a noué un ruban aux couleurs du drapeau hongrois sur son sac à main, évoque spontanément la présidente de la Commission européenne, c'est peut-être parce que son image est partout, dans les rues, au bord des routes, sur les abribus. Les affiches électorales du Fidesz mettent en scène Ursula von der Leyen, assise dans un fauteuil rouge, entourée de ses « fidèles serviteurs », des figures de l'opposition, déguisés en majordomes, l'ex-Premier ministre Ferenc Gyurcsany, son épouse Klara Dobrev, tête de liste de l'alliance de gauche aux élections européennes, Gergely Karacsony, le maire écologiste de Budapest, et la nouvelle figure de l'opposition, Peter Magyar. Ils portent sur des plateaux en argent les mots « guerre », « immigration » et « genre », trois thèmes qui mobilisent l'électorat Fidesz.« C'est horrible qu'à Bruxelles, ils soient favorables à la guerre en Ukraine. Comment des personnes normales peuvent-elles vouloir la guerre ? J'attends que Trump revienne au pouvoir et arrête la guerre en un jour, parce que si les États-Unis n'envoient plus d'armes, alors ce sera fini », confie Zsuzsanna, avant de rejoindre le reste de l'assistance. Un public d'âge mur, venu écouter les candidats du parti de Viktor Orban, à la mairie du XVIIIème, qui comptent bien reconquérir cet arrondissement perdu lors du scrutin de 2019.Les orateurs dénoncent les projets immobiliers de l'équipe en place, les accusent de corruption, mais n'oublient pas aussi d'évoquer les sujets au cœur de la campagne européenne du Fidesz. « Je n'ai pas une bonne impression de Bruxelles, car il y a des procédures en cours contre la Hongrie, qui, de mon point de vue, ne sont pas correctes et là, je le dis très poliment. La Hongrie est particulièrement attaquée sur la question migratoire », souligne Attila Szarvas, directeur d'une école catholique et ancien maire adjoint du XVIIIème arrondissement de la capitale.Ancien footballeur professionnel, László Dajka, 65 ans, est sur la même ligne : « Jusqu'à ce que la droite arrive au pouvoir, la gauche disait oui à tout le monde. Je suis très fier qu'on dise enfin non ! Les Hongrois disent non à l'immigration, les Hongrois disent non à tout ce qui n'est pas bon pour eux. Il y a enfin parmi les Hongrois quelqu'un qui ose tenir tête à Bruxelles ! », s'enthousiasme l'ancien milieu de terrain qui a joué à l'Unión Deportiva Las Palmas en Espagne et Yverdon en Suisse.Immigration, genre, guerreSur la place des Héros à Budapest, des groupes de touristes chinois se prennent en photo. C'est ici qu'en juin 1989, un jeune homme aux cheveux longs prononce un discours qui marque. Viktor Orban, 26 ans, s'élève alors contre la dictature communiste. 35 ans plus tard, le libéral s'est transformé en « illibéral » assumé en conflit régulier avec l'Union européenne, qu'il compare à une « mauvaise parodie contemporaine » de l'Union soviétique.Ancien conseiller en politique étrangère du Fidesz, numéro 10 sur la liste européenne du parti, Andras Laszlo appelle de ses vœux un « changement à Bruxelles », reprochant à la Commission et à sa présidente « la trahison des valeurs conservatrices », une politique environnementale « trop à gauche », « l'idéologie du genre » et un mauvais Pacte sur la migration et l'asile. « Les sanctions contre la Russie sont un échec énorme qui pèse sur l'économie européenne », regrette le candidat, estimant que « dans chaque crise sa Commission a pris une mauvaise direction ».Régulièrement rappelée à l'ordre pour ses atteintes à l'État de droit, la Hongrie de Viktor Orban a fait de Bruxelles son principal cheval de bataille. « Lorsqu'une Commission est si hostile à un État membre, il n'est pas surprenant que ce pays critique également beaucoup la Commission. La question de l'État de droit relève davantage d'un débat idéologique et d'un outil dont dispose la Commission européenne pour influencer et modifier le comportement d'un État membre », estime le politologue Agoston Mraz de l'Institut Nézöpont, un cercle de réflexion conservateur.« Tous les gouvernements conservateurs en Europe, qu'il s'agisse de l'ancien gouvernement polonais ou de l'actuel gouvernement hongrois, sont soumis au chantage politique et financier de Bruxelles parce qu'ils sont conservateurs, et non pour d'autres raisons », avance, pour sa part, Matyas Kohan, éditorialiste pour l'hebdomadaire Mandiner, proche du pouvoir.Cap à droiteSur les 21 sièges d'eurodéputés hongrois, le Fidesz a de bonnes chances d'en décrocher plus de la moitié à l'issue des élections du 9 juin. Courtisé par les grands partis de l'extrême-droite européenne, qui ont le vent en poupe, comme celui de l'Italienne Giorgia Meloni, il pourrait rejoindre l'un des grands groupes nationalistes au Parlement européen. Une perspective qui n'a pas de quoi réjouir Gergely Toth, qui a décidé de se lancer en politique, lassé de l'omnipotence du Fidesz dans sa ville, au bord du lac Balaton. Candidat de l'opposition à la mairie de Keszthely, 20 000 habitants, il est venu écouter le discours de Peter Magyar, le nouvel opposant numéro un à Viktor Orban, avec lequel il espère pouvoir nouer des alliances dans l'avenir.« J'ai toujours été très fier d'être Hongrois, mais maintenant, chaque fois que je vais à l'étranger, je dois expliquer que je ne suis pas favorable à notre gouvernement. J'ai honte que nous allions à l'encontre des valeurs européennes et je dis cela bien que ces valeurs de la famille, de l'église, soient aussi très importantes pour moi », explique Gergely Toth, alors que l'étoile montante de la politique hongroise, ancien cadre du Fidesz, signe des autographes, se fait prendre en photo à l'issue de son discours de plus d'une heure, prononcé sans notes.Peter Magyar, dont le parti Tisza (Respect et liberté) est crédité de plus de 20% d'intentions de vote auprès des électeurs, devrait décrocher plusieurs mandats au Parlement européen, plaide pour une relation « critique mais constructive » avec l'UE. « Nous serions membres à part entière du club, nous rejoindrions immédiatement le parquet européen et notre parti serait membre du PPE. On aurait une relation assez différente de celle qu'entretient le gouvernement Orban », précise-t-il brièvement à RFI, avant de s'engouffrer dans le véhicule qui l'emmène vers la prochaine étape de sa tournée électorale marathon.Venu assister à la prestation de Peter Magyar, Lajos Heder, compte voter pour Tisza, le 9 juin. Cet ancien membre du Fidesz, qui a rompu il y a longtemps avec le parti du pouvoir sans lui trouver d'alternative crédible, se dit « fâché contre Emmanuel Macron et contre l'UE », dont il regrette qu'ils ne soient pas « plus sévères avec Viktor Orban » qu'ils le « laissent cultiver son amitié avec la Russie. L'UE devrait appliquer des sanctions plus drastiques envers la Hongrie ».L'UE trop conciliante ?Les dirigeants européens ont-ils été trop conciliants avec Viktor Orban ? Pour Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, eurodéputée verte et rapporteuse au Parlement européen sur l'État de droit en Hongrie, la réponse est sans équivoque. « Ils auraient pu actionner l'article 7 du Traité de l'Union européenne pour suspendre les droits de vote de Viktor Orban au sein du Conseil européen, mais ils ont manqué de courage, c'est aussi simple que cela ». Et d'évoquer un précédent en matière, celui de Jörg Haïder le dirigeant autrichien d'extrême-droite arrivé au pouvoir en 2000.« La réaction a été immédiate, instinctive, rappelle l'eurodéputée : tout le monde refuse alors ce qui est considéré comme un dangereux retour en arrière. Aussitôt, les autres dirigeants suspendent les droits de vote de l'Autriche, durant quelques mois, en attendant que la situation se stabilise et que Jörg Haider quitte le pouvoir. Aujourd'hui, on n'a plus cet instinct-là. Nous nous sommes habitués à avoir des gens qui vont vers l'autocratie et qui tiennent des discours de plus en plus d'extrême-droite. Parce que Viktor Orban dit des choses assez terrifiantes sur les droits humains, sur la différence de race ou sur la chrétienté. Et pourtant, il n'est jamais sanctionné ».Autre voix critique à l'encontre de Viktor Orban au sein du Parlement européen, celle du Finlandais Petri Sarvamaa. Ancien journaliste, élu au Parlement européen depuis 2012, Petri Sarvamaa a une relation particulière avec le Fidesz, car il a siégé pendant des années avec les eurodéputés du parti hongrois, au sein du Parti Populaire Européen, le groupe de centre-droit. Le Fidesz en a fait partie jusqu'à la rupture consommée en 2021.« Je ne cessais de dire au sein du groupe qu'il y avait un problème avec eux, que le parti ne répondait plus à nos valeurs, en particulier sur le respect de l'État de droit, se souvient l'eurodéputé. À l'époque, quand les choses ont commencé à empirer, j'ai dit à M. Orban durant une réunion de groupe : « si vous ne changez pas, si vous ne revenez pas à nos valeurs, votre place n'est plus parmi nous ».Entre 2012 et la rupture avec le PPE, Petri Savarmaa observe la dérive progressive des élus du Fidesz vers un discours populiste et hostile à l'Union européenne. « J'ai vraiment eu l'impression à un moment de les voir s'éloigner de nous, avec leurs déclarations nationalistes et tout ce qu'ils disaient sur le fait que la Hongrie n'était pas respectée. Personne ne comprenait ce qu'ils disaient parce que la Hongrie n'était pas certainement pas maltraitée. Au contraire, elle recevait énormément d'argent du contribuable européen ! »Les partis membres du PPE sont d'autant plus lents à réagir à cette évolution que Viktor Orban a longtemps été perçu comme un démocrate pro-européen. « Il était du bon côté de l'histoire au moment où l'URSS s'est effondrée, rappelle Petri Sarvamaa. Orban au début c'était un héros pour nous, quelqu'un qui s'est battu pour la démocratie ! Je ne sais pas ce qui s'est passé, mais je crois que c'est un politicien très malin qui voulait être sûr de rester au pouvoir. Et sa stratégie a été de faire croire aux Hongrois qu'il fallait les protéger de l'Europe et de son influence néfaste : il a construit méticuleusement un récit et une propagande dont il est devenu le maître absolu. »DIAPORAMA« Ils ont peur de Viktor Orban »Cette stratégie pour conserver à tout prix le pouvoir serait donc à l'origine de la posture hostile à l'UE adoptée depuis des années par Viktor Orban. Mais, les eurodéputés hongrois élus sous la bannière du Fidesz avancent une autre explication : le dirigeant hongrois se bat pour des valeurs traditionnelles et conservatrices qui ont été trahies par l'UE. « Les bureaucrates et les gauchistes de Bruxelles ont peur de Viktor Orban et de sa vision de l'Europe des nations », s'indigne Balazs Hidveghi, députés Fidesz au Parlement européen. « Notre vision, c'est la vision que la majorité des Hongrois soutiennent, et nous pensons que toutes ces attaques ont en fait comme racine une différence d'opinion politique et idéologique ».Interrogé sur le projet européen de Viktor Orban, l'eurodéputé hongrois assure que celui-ci veut rester au sein de l'UE. « Nous sommes européens et nous sommes fiers de l'être. Mais voilà, nous voulons changer Bruxelles. Nous voulons changer la majorité actuelle au Parlement européen pour élargir la représentation des peuples qui représentent ces valeurs ». Pas de dérive autoritaire en Hongrie aux yeux de Balasz Hidveghi, qui trouve parfaitement justifiée la loi sur la souveraineté nationale adoptée en décembre 2023. « C'est tout à fait le même type de protection légale qu'on voit aux États-Unis, par exemple. Et c'est tout à fait normal. Il faut protéger notre pays contre l'influence politique, idéologique qui vient de l'étranger. »Protéger la Hongrie de l'influence de l'étranger, l'un des maîtres-mots de Viktor Orban, n'a rien de rassurant pour les ONG et les médias indépendants, confrontés à cette nouvelle loi, qui fait l'objet d'une procédure d'infraction de la part de la Commission européenne et d'une résolution adoptée lors de la dernière session du Parlement européen en avril. Ces initiatives sont saluées par Márta Pardavi, la co-présidente du Comité Helsinki à Budapest : « Il est très important de montrer aux Hongrois et aux autres Européens que ce type de législation n'a pas sa place en Europe, qu'il va à l'encontre des valeurs fondamentales de l'Union et de son système juridique. La Hongrie est une démocratie malade au sein de l'Union européenne et cette maladie a de nombreuses répercussions non seulement pour les Hongrois, pour notre société, mais c'est aussi un problème qui touche assez directement tous les Européens et il est donc juste que l'Europe cherche également des réponses pour résoudre ce problème. »À Budapest, Direkt 36, un média d'investigation en ligne, a multiplié les révélations dérangeantes sur l'enrichissement des proches du Premier ministre ou sur ses relations avec la Chine ou la Russie. Régulièrement sous pression, la rédaction n'attend rien de bon de cette nouvelle loi. András Pethö, l'un des fondateurs et directeur général de Direkt 36, la voit comme « une nouvelle tentative d'intimidation des organisations de la société civile ou des médias, car, avec sa formulation très vague, elle cible de manière très large toute personne qui accepte des dons, un soutien de l'extérieur de la Hongrie ou qui travaille avec des partenaires étrangers ».Le journaliste s'inquiète aussi de la nouvelle autorité chargée d'appliquer cette loi, l'Office de protection de la souveraineté, qui « peut travailler en étroite collaboration avec les services secrets et d'autres agences étatiques. Elle a le pouvoir de mener des enquêtes sur des organisations ou des individus. » Et de conclure : « Ce n'est qu'un chapitre de plus des efforts du gouvernement pour réprimer les voix indépendantes mais cela ne rendra certainement pas les choses plus faciles pour nous. »La vidéo

Hungary during the first world war was a difficult place to live, especially if you happened to live in one of the many rural villages, far away from the grand city of Budapest, where the harsh conditions imposed on a country losing a war bit the hardest. Even if you managed to survive all the fighting, the riots, the violent occupations, or the Spanish Flu, there was always the possibility that your wife, daughter-in-law, or neighbour might decide that they had had enough of you and pay a visit to “Aunty Suzy,” the friendly local midwife. Outside of her duties as a medical practitioner, veterinary surgeon and fortune teller, Zsusanna Fazekas just so happened to run a booming business turning flypaper into poison, taking the term “pest control” to a whole new level.
