It's Miriam Shor, y'all! You Might Know Her From Younger, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Magic Hour, GCB, Shortbus, Swingtown, Maestro, American Fiction, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Miriam gave us all the scoop on grounding the zaniness of Diana Trout on Darren Star's Younger, leading the indie comedy Magic Hour, and appearing in "brilliant but canceled" series like GCB and Swingtown. All that, plus Miriam talked to us about being one of John Cameron Mitchell's "players," appearing in Shortbus and, of course, originating the role of Yitzhak in the Hedwig universe; popping up in prestige Oscar films; her musical theatre roots; New York City history; and dying by way of a paintbrush in The Americans.

First up is American Fiction, the 2023 adaptation of Percival Everett's novel Erasure. Laura is joined by Matt Weinkam and Michelle Smith of Literary Cleveland to consider how the film satirizes the publishing industry and academia, what it has to say about race and the depiction of Black families in film, comparisons between the book and film adaptation, and a lot more.   Literary Cleveland is a nonprofit organization and creative writing center that empowers people to explore other voices and discover their own. Learn more about the 2025 Cleveland Poetry Festival, which takes place April 25-27 with a theme of The Body Politic; the Inkubator, one of the largest free writing festivals in the country; and more, including dozens of classes and programs for writers of all levels.   Matt Weinkam is the Executive Director of Literary Cleveland. His work has been published in HAD, Denver Quarterly, Sonora Review, New South, DIAGRAM, Jellyfish Review, Split Lip, and Electric Literature. He holds an MA in creative writing from Miami University, an MFA in fiction from Northern Michigan University, and he has taught creative writing as far away as Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, China.   Michelle R. Smith is the Programming Director at Literary Cleveland, as well as a writer, poet, educator, cultural facilitator, and native Clevelander. She is the author of the poetry collections Ariel in Black (2015) and The Vagina Analogues (2020), and the creator of BLAX MUSEUM, an annual performance showcase dedicated to honoring notable Black figures in American history and culture.   Be sure to check out Michelle and Matt's writing. What do we get from a good book? With a greater diversity of stories on offer from publishers and as exam set texts, Janine Bradbury looks at the arguments which are made in favour of reading as a way of encouraging empathy and understanding or as a place to find ourselves. She asks whether this is the right way to think about the value of reading and her essay considers examples including Toni Morrison's story Recitatif, Percival Everett's novel Erasure (which became the film American Fiction) and Nella Larsen's 1929 novel Passing, which Rebecca Hall has directed as a film.Janine Bradbury is a New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the BBC to put academic research on radio. In this episode, we start with a rave review of James by Percival Everett. This novel, a brilliant reimagining of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Jim's perspective, absolutely blew me away. It's a five-star read in my book, and I believe more people should pick it up.We then briefly touch on the movie American Fiction, which is based on Everett's 2001 novel Erasure. The film adaptation dives into the complexities of race and identity, much like the novel, and is worth checking out.Lastly, I react to a thought-provoking clip from a speaker who argues that men today are better providers than ever before. I dive into how the skyrocketing cost of living has made it harder for people to provide for their families, acknowledging that it's a tough road—one that's harder today than it was in the past.Tune in for this mix of book talk, movie insights, and an honest discussion about the challenges of modern life!

Before his novel Erasure was adapted into the hit film American Fiction, Percival Everett was already one of the literary world's most acclaimed talents, appreciated for his inimitable characters and storylines, as well as his uncommon variety of genres. Since Everett's first novel in 1983, he has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, for Telephone, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, for The Trees. His newest novel, James, is a reimagining of Huckleberry Finn, and has already been touted as “a canon-shattering great book.” Cord Jefferson made his feature writing and directorial debut with American Fiction, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. His television credits include Watchmen, The Good Place, Succession, Station Eleven, Master of None, and The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. On June 3, 2024, Cord Jefferson and Percival Everett came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to be interviewed by Jelani Cobb. This program was originally heard in June of 2024.

Novelist Jacinda Townsend and writer James Bernard Short join co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about the movie American Fiction, which is based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett. Townsend and Short discuss how the film addresses race in the publishing industry via its central character, Black author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, who tries to make an ironic point by writing a book exploiting Black stereotypes and finds, to his dismay, that it's received in earnest and a bestseller. Townsend and Short analyze director Cord Jefferson's approach and the film's themes of family dysfunction, freedom in storytelling, and the importance of portraying the complexity of Black lives.  To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). Same procedure as every year, James! Cheerio! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We review one of the most anticipated films of the year--Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal as Lucius, Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and Pedro Pascal as General Acacius. Tune in for historical analysis and funny takes on the epic sequel film directed by Ridley Scott. Spoiler alert -- we don't think the sequel is as good as 2000's OG Gladiator. We discuss our favorite historical films and TV shows and the Roman Empire meme before unpacking why Gladiator II paled in comparison to its predecessor. We also analyze the decision to make a sequel 24 years later, explain why the Glicked phenomenon did not reach Barbenheimer status, dissect whether or not Paul Mescal is a hot leading man, highlight our favorite moments like the various battle scenes and nostalgic moments honoring Maximus, and detail the many historical inaccuracies like the water coliseum battle with sharks and lack of female characters beyond Lucilla. Lastly, we debate whether or not lying to protect your son is a green flag. Interested in more movie reviews? American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson, in his feature directorial debut. Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, it follows a frustrated novelist-professor who writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical "black" books, only for it to be mistaken by the liberal elite for serious literature and published to both high sales and critical praise. It stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, and Keith David.

Best known for co-creating and starring in the HBO series Insecure, Issa has attracted a significant amount of Hollywood spotlight largely by showcasing her own personal experiences and emotions on screen for all to see. Literally starting from scratch in 2011 as the singular brainchild of a homegrown, Kickstarter-funded YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl, she's come quite a long way to become the sitting President of Barbie Land in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. She's done amazing work in films like American Fiction, The Lovebirds and The Photograph, and lent her voice to the iconic Marvel character Spider-Woman in Sony's massively successful animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She's even had the incredible opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Issa has also notably put forth a lot of effort toward making more room for African American stories as the founder and CEO of her own film and TV production company, HOORAE. If a super successful career in entertainment wasn't enough, Issa has also found time to branch out into the retail space as co-founder and creative leader of the haircare brand Sienna Naturals—which we carry at Nordstrom—and more recently she's taken the role of chief storyteller for the jewelry brand Cast, which we also carry. A few spoilers for the 2023 film American Fiction. Inspired by a recent viewing of American Fiction, Dr. Jemar Tisby is joined with EP Beau York to discuss the pitfalls that progressive white liberals fall into when attempting to separate themselves from racism. American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson in his feature directorial debut. Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, it follows a frustrated novelist-professor who writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical "Black" books, only for it to be mistaken for serious literature and published to high sales and critical praise. The film stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody and Keith David. Mark Ruffalo is nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in Poor Things. He plays a hilarious debauched lawyer who seduces Emma Stone's character. Ruffalo has also appeared in Marvel movies as the Incredible Hulk. For that role he had to act in a motion capture suit. "It's the man-canceling suit. It makes you look big where you want to look small, and small where want to look big," he says. Also, we hear from Jeffrey Wright. He's up for an Oscar for best actor for his role in American Fiction, where he plays a novelist who's frustrated with the publishing industry's expectations of Black authors. He cynically writes a book under a pseudonym that's full of clichés, like violence and poverty — and it's a hit.
