Tonight, we'll read from “The New Air World: The Science of Meteorology Simplified" by Willis L. Moore, originally published in 1922. This work aimed to make the complex field of meteorology understandable to the layperson, particularly for those seeking to become more “weatherwise”. Beyond being an author, Willis Luther Moore was an American meteorologist and educator. He also served as chief of the U.S. Weather Bureau, and president of the National Geographic Society. When Moore began his career for the Weather Bureau, long range weather forecasting was considered little more than quackery both by Moore himself and the scientific community. However, a little more than a decade later, in 1906, Moore announced that the Weather Bureau was about to begin forecasting the weather a month in advance using new scientific methods. The Bureau made weekly forecasts a standard release in 1910. However, despite some successes, these would remain as inaccurate as the older methods. It wasn't untilthe 1970s that forecasts for multiple days became consistently reliable, thanks to more sophisticated computer models, satellite data, and improved observational networks. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Cloud, streaming, generative AI… while all of these are increasingly becoming hot topics of discussion, data centres—the large, boxy buildings that house high-powered computers—are looking for innovative solutions to stay cool. The advent of GPU processing has opened an opportunity for a handful of foreign companies to throw their hat into the ring. Their proposition? Liquid cooling. So far, air cooling has been the preferred way to keep data centres cool. Like its name suggests, it is the process of using air to keep these centres cool. Liquid cooling does just that but with water. It's more efficient and largely believed to be a better way of cooling. But change does not come easy. Many data centre operators here in India believe it is riskier than air cooling. But with AI technology advancing the way that it is and GPUs growing more popular, they may soon not have a choice. It is with great pride and excitement that I stand before you today for this historic groundbreaking ceremony for the new air traffic control tower here at Valley International Airport. This project marks a significant milestone in our continuous efforts to enhance and expand our facilities to better serve the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley. Over the past decades, Valley International Airport has not only witnessed tremendous growth, but also demonstrated a remarkable recovery from the impacts of the pandemic. Our resilience and ability to adapt quickly have ensured that we continue to serve as a vital link in the economic fabric of the region, even during the most challenging times. The city fathers knew what they were doing when they made a decision in 1950 to form the Harlingen Airport Board. The board's organizational structure in itself has been vital to our growth, as well as admired by our peers. Valley International Airport is undeniably a major asset for the Rio Grande Valley. It has enormous potential for future growth and expansion. It is poised to serve the diverse needs of our community for many years to come. As we break ground on this state of the art air traffic control facility, we reaffirm our commitment to safety, efficiency and innovation. The dedication and commitment of the airport board have been crucial in bringing to completion projects that will propel us and our success into the future. I would like to thank our FAA partners at the Texas district office. We have (FAA Texas Airports District Office Manager) Anthony Bryant here today.Today as we embark on this new chapter with the construction of our advanced air traffic control tower, we also celebrate the near completion of the new Runway Extension Project and the new special Category 2 instrument landing systems that come with that. We want to thank Bryan and the FAA. Together these initiatives are set to significantly enhance our operational capabilities and ensure that valley International Airport remains the airport of choice in the Rio Grande Valley. So again, thank you thank you to each and every one of you here in attendance today. This groundbreaking is about laying groundwork for new opportunities and continuing to dream big together. Let's celebrate the bright future that lies ahead for Valley International Airport, the city of Harlingen and the entire Rio Grande Valley. Editor's Note: The above commentary is based on remarks Marv Esterly gave at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new air traffic control tower at Valley International Airport in Harlingen. In this episode, Alex and Annie are joined by Dora Du, CMO of WYND - venture-backed startup that has built proprietary sensor technology that helps homeowners take control of the air in their properties. Their first use case is a product line that monitors and improves in-door air quality, and more recently they've released a new product that detects noise and smoke.WYND was founded by MIT engineers and scientists, with their first focus being to create products for the residential market. During COVID, they ventured into the vacation rental space unintentionally - but as more property managers bought their initial line of products, WYND followed the market and have now changed their messaging, approach and product development to be more tailored towards the vacation rental industry.Dora highlights that WYND is playing their role in the automation revolution of the vacation rental industry. With new remote technology becoming more prevalent and the short term rental space being democratized with the Airbnb boom, there's both excitement on the horizon, and also lots of added pressure with the rapid increase in regulations. They know their product line will become less of a “nice-to-have” and more of a “must-have” as HOA's and local governments push for more regulations. When comparing the vacation rental and hotel markets, Dora mentions that the biggest difference is the speed of adaptation and implementation. Selling to vacation rental property managers happens at a much lower volume and with a less complex sales cycle, which puts vacation rentals ahead of the curve in regards to new technology adaptation.Dora goes into detail on how WYND is changing the game for sensor technology, and talks on the many use cases and proprietary value of their product line. They are now developing new AI technology to help people improve their indoor environment by better understanding the air they breathe - which is super exciting.Tune in to the full episode to learn about new technology that might be a great addition to your vacation rentals!HIGHLIGHTS00:30 How WYND Found Product Market Fit08:54 Dora's Career Trajectory11:22 The Difference Between Serving STR's and Hotels13:29 How COVID Kickstarted Vacation Rental Technology Adaptation15:25 How WYND's Technology Works19:30 Dora's A-HA Moment in Her Career20:59 What's Next for WYNDThis episode is brought to you by Casago, Guest Ranger, and Good Neighbor Tech.Visit AlexAndAnniesList.com to view our top picks for the best suppliers in vacation rental technology and services.Special thanks to Rev & Research for being the presenting sponsor of Alex & Annie's List.Connect with Dora:Website | LinkedinConnect with Alex and Annie:Alex Husner | Annie HolcombeAlexAndAnniePodcast.com
