Is There Still Room for John Fetterman in Today's Democratic Party?

Honestly with Bari Weiss

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2025 81:18

Who owns the future of the Democratic Party? That's the question on everyone's mind since last Tuesday night—when the richest city in America elected 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as its mayor. You can see Mamdani's win as a one-off—a charismatic contender facing a rival mired in controversy. But the other way to see it is as emblematic of something larger: a sign about the state—and future—of the left.  Here was a candidate promising to solve the affordability crisis with free childcare, free buses, rent freezes, and even government-run grocery stores. And despite the socialist bent, most establishment Democrats fell in line to support him—from Kathy Hochul and Hakeem Jeffries to Barack Obama, who reportedly called Mamdani to offer himself as a sounding board. If that's true—if Mamdani is the new standard-bearer for Democrats in the way Obama once was—then where does that leave someone like Senator John Fetterman? The Pennsylvania senator didn't just withhold his endorsement—he went so far as to say that socialism is not the future of the Democratic Party. It's an interesting stance, given that just a few years ago, Fetterman ran a progressive Senate campaign focused on reforming criminal justice,  legalizing marijuana, and raising the minimum wage. He was backed by AOC and Bernie Sanders. The right even called him a “silver-spoon socialist.” Then came his near-fatal stroke on the day of his Democratic primary—followed by calls from both sides to drop out. Instead, he stayed in the race and won, flipping a GOP Senate seat. Since coming to Congress, Fetterman has stood out—and not just because he's six-foot-eight. He's shown strong support for Israel, a departure from many in his party. He's said Democrats mishandled border security under Biden. He praised the president for his peace deal in Gaza—and even met with him in Mar-a-Lago. He's also publicly blamed Democrats for the government shutdown, saying: “I follow country, then party.” He refused to “play chicken with the food security of 42 million Americans,” and voted 15 times with Republicans to reopen Washington. On Sunday night, the Senate finally voted to reopen the governement—but only after 40 days of missed paychecks, travel chaos, and millions at risk of losing SNAP benefits. It was just the latest litmus test for Democrats, highlighting the divide between the centrists and the progressives—between, for lack of better words, the Fetterman wing and the Mamdani wing. And now, Democrats may have to decide which impulse to run on—in 2026, and in 2028.Today, Bari asks John Fetterman about his decision to speak out against his own party; his recent dinner with Donald Trump—and the backlash that followed; the shutdown and whether he believes the Democratic Party is heading in the right direction; and finally, his new book Unfettered, which chronicles his journey to the Senate, his stroke, his battle with depression, and his time in office. When John Fetterman won Pennsylvania's senate seat in 2022, Democrats across the country treated him as a hero and an example of a path forward for the party in the populist Trump era. Three years later, he often finds himself at odds with his party – most recently, on the government shutdown, Israel, and working class voters. He delves deeper into his political views and experiences in a new memoir out this week, titled Unfettered. In the book, he's also deeply honest about his struggles with mental health.“Honestly, I know millions of Americans suffer,” Fetterman told NPR. “And to really understand what [...] true deep depression is like [...] that's part of the conversation in the book.”This episode was produced by Tyler Bartlam with audio engineering from Andie Huether. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is among the Democrats who voted with Republicans on a bill that could end the government shutdown. Affordable Care Act subsidies have been at the center of the shutdown fight. Fetterman told "CBS Mornings" he wants to make health care more affordable, but slammed the shutdown, saying "our government should never be held as a hostage." Police in Mississippi say they arrested a man who yelled antisemitic comments at Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy. In an interview airing on "CBS Sunday Morning," Portnoy speaks about the hateful rhetoric he's faced and increasing his security. SEASON 4 EPISODE 32: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Quislings. Traitors. Cowards. Capitulators. Collaborators. Fakes. Frauds. Enablers. Betrayers. Failures. Political Prostitutes. Senators Durbin, Kaine, Fetterman, Shaheen, Cortez-Masto, Hassan, Rosen, and King need to be expelled from the Democratic party and any that mistakenly think they have a chance of retaining their seats must be primaried. Must be. They are not progressives, they are not pragmatists, they are not even moderates. They are fools. Their careers must be ended. Now. Durbin, Kaine, Fetterman, Shaheen, Cortez-Masto, Hassan, Rosen, and King. Now. Done. Forgotten. Let us hear their names no more. Last night these eight Senators voted to fold, without any pressure, without any bribe, without anything. They voted to kick millions of Americans off ObamaCare in order to reopen and fund the government – for only three months, mind you – in exchange not for magic beans but just the promise of a vote in which they’ll GET magic beans – a vote ON the health care subsidies - IF half a dozen Republicans defy Trump. A vote about magic beans. Which they won’t win. Their rationalizations were pathetic and suggested their familiarity with the reality of the Senate, of Trump, of the Republican Party, was less than that of the average Senate Page. What's worse is, this happens now as the reality becomes more and clear: Trump’s mind is gone. It’s so bad even The Washington Post noticed. It’s so bad The Washington Post even put it on their front page. He’s hyping weight loss drugs. In The Oval Office. And how he and he alone can bring down their price. And a weight loss patient there to extoll weight loss drugs and say how safe they are and praise Trump’s wonderfulness… collapses. Folds. Drops, slow-motion, like a deflating inflatable tube man at a used car sales lot. Trump – whose mind is gone - not only doesn’t help the guy on the floor… he’s offended he upstaged him. And then Trump – whose MIND IS GONE - falls asleep. For the second time. Or as The Washington Post put it: “A Closer Look At Trump’s Apparent Struggles To Fight Off Sleep In The Oval Office” read the Post headline. “A Washington Post analysis of multiple video feeds found that the president spent nearly 20 minutes apparently battling to keep his eyes open…” 815 words follow. And four pictures. One of Trump – whose mind is gone - with one eye closed. One with one eye closed and two fingers rubbing it. One with both eyes closed. One where you can almost SEE the snoring. Even. The Washington Post. Knows It. Let’s step back from the nuts-and-bolts of the government shutdown to try to process how it was perceived by Trump…whose mind is gone. HE thought it would be a GOOD idea to cut off food stamps so lines at soup kitchens would get longer just as it was getting cold. He thought the correct political move as the Holidays approached was… government-sponsored starvation. He believed that the country would praise him for… gradually shutting down all air travel – including all air travel FOR HIS SUPPORTERS – first for Thanksgiving and then for Christmas and New Year’s. He thought these were good political moves. SPORTSBALLCENTER (30:00): Yes, legal gambling could send two Cleveland pitchers to jail for 65 years. But no, they didn't actually make a Shohei Ohtani Used Jockstrap baseball card. B-Block (38:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Politico thinks the first thing a Mayor-Elect of New York has to do is answer questions about the 2028 Senate elections. The Breaker media newsletter finds the New York Times fricasseeing its own digital books. That's right: FIFA isn't just polishing Trump's knob, it's inventing a "Peace Prize" so it can polish it harder. And Dr. Oz wants you to lose 400 pounds by the midterms. C-Block (55:00) WHY I'M NOT A HOCKEY ANNOUNCER: One of my favorite sportscasting stories: how my budding career as a plucky pucky play-by-play guy was thwarted when the team we were broadcasting "forgot to rent the rink" - and how I avenged myself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The FBI says they have stopped a "Jihadi terror plot" planned for this Halloween weekend. The Department of Homeland Security conducted a series of raids in Indiana this week. They arrested 223 illegal immigrants, including 146 who were driving semi-trucks. We dig into a new study showing that Democrats now represent more than 75% of America’s wealthiest districts — the very same crowd that rails against “income inequality.” From Nancy Pelosi to Bernie Sanders, millionaire politicians and billionaire donors have reshaped the Democratic Party into an elite club more comfortable in boardrooms than break rooms. 16:30 The American Mamas tackle a listener's question: could Gavin Newsom actually become the Democrats' 2028 nominee? Teri Netterville doesn't hold back, calling out Newsom's chameleon-like persona — switching accents, stories, and attitudes depending on the audience. Kids showed up in all-American costumes from tanks and Spiderman to princesses and costumes that harken back to Trump's day of work at McDonald's. 25:00 We Dig Deep into the shocking details of Operation Arctic Frost, a secret 2022 FBI surveillance program that allegedly targeted Republican lawmakers, conservative organizations, and media outlets. We break down how the operation—approved under the Biden administration—used expansive digital tracking and data mapping to monitor phone records, online activity, and even purchases of GOP senators, Turning Point USA, and Fox News journalists. With no crimes uncovered and no probable cause established, the discussion turns to what this means for civil liberties, political bias within federal agencies, and the future of free speech in America. 32:00 Get Prodovite from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. 1. Government Shutdown and Federal Worker Pay The episode opens with a discussion of a government shutdown, referred to as the “Schumer shutdown.” Senator Cruz criticizes Democrats for voting against legislation that would have paid essential federal workers during the shutdown. He highlights specific Democratic senators who voted in favor (Warnock, Ossoff, Fetterman) and criticizes the rest for voting against it. Cruz emphasizes the impact on TSA agents, air traffic controllers, and military personnel, warning of potential travel disruptions and national security risks. He also notes that members of Congress continue to receive pay during the shutdown, though he claims to have requested his own pay be withheld. 2. Rise of Antisemitism on the Right Cruz expresses concern about increasing antisemitism within conservative circles, particularly among younger people. He recounts his speech at a Christians United for Israel event, where he warned about the dangers of ignoring antisemitism on the right. He criticizes both the left and right for harboring antisemitic sentiments, but emphasizes a recent rise on the right. Cruz calls on church leaders and conservatives to actively oppose antisemitism and support Israel, citing national security interests and moral obligations. 3. Opposition to Ambassador Nominee Amer Ghalib Cruz discusses his opposition to Amer Ghalib, a nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait. He criticizes Ghalib’s past statements, including praise for the Muslim Brotherhood and controversial social media activity. Cruz argues that Ghalib’s views are incompatible with U.S. foreign policy and President Trump’s positions, particularly regarding Israel and the Abraham Accords. He predicts that the nomination will likely be withdrawn due to bipartisan concerns. 4. Religious Persecution in China The podcast concludes with a segment on the persecution of Christians in China, particularly the arrest of Pastor Jin Mingri and members of the Zion Church. Cruz condemns the Chinese Communist Party’s actions and calls for the U.S. to use diplomatic and economic pressure to advocate for religious freedom. He emphasizes the importance of the U.S. standing up for persecuted religious minorities globally. Cruz expresses hope that President Trump will raise the issue during an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (10/23/25): 3:05pm During a recent interview, Democratic House Whip Rep. Katherine Clark said of the government shutdown: "Of course there will be families that are going to suffer…but it is one of the few leverage times we have." 3:10pm- During a Thursday press conference, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy implored Democrats to join Republicans in passing a continuing resolution to reopen the government—warning that the shutdown could start to impact the performance of air traffic control. 3:15pm- Democrats and media members are apoplectic over the Trump administration's decision to construct a grand ballroom at the White House—expanding the residence's East Wing. President Trump has insisted construction will be privately funded, at no expense to the taxpayer. Despite left-wing outrage, Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama all oversaw major construction projects while serving as president. Speaker Mike Johnson noted during a press conference on Wednesday: This is proof Democrats will attack President Trump for anything and everything he does. 3:20pm- While appearing on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) was asked about potentially being primaried. He responded defiantly: “I'm not afraid of telling the truth. I'll be the Democrat that refuses to lie to the base…And now I refuse to call my fellow citizens fascists or Nazis.” Could Fetterman switch political parties? 3:40pm- On Thursday, President Donald Trump held a roundtable—alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem—to discuss his administration's crackdown on drug cartels. 3:50pm- William Howard Taft, the largest president in American history, famously required a specially installed oversized bathtub to accommodate his frame. Did the press complain about the construction project? Also, last month, Politico reported that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker was trying to lose weight ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Does anyone notice a difference in his size? 4:05pm- On Thursday, President Donald Trump held a roundtable—alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem—to discuss his administration's crackdown on drug cartels. 4:45pm- In a press conference on Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of more than 30 people—including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier—for participating in illegal sports gambling and rigged poker games in coordination with the mafia. 5:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the Trump administration's new sanctions on Russia, the durability of the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, and the “Donroe Doctrine” (Trump's plan for the Western Hemisphere). Dr. Coates is author of the book: “The Battle for the Jewish State: How Israel—and America—Can Win.” 5:40pm- Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner recently chose to cover up a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. He also has a history of making racist, anti-police, anti-LGBTQ, and pro-communist posts on Reddit. However, mainstream Democrats continue to defend him! 6:05pm- During Wednesday night's New York City Mayoral debate, Curtis Sliwa hilariously noted that Zohran Mamdani's resume could fit on a cocktail napkin. In another memorable exchange, Andrew Cuomo predicted that if Mamdani wins, President Donald Trump will “knock him on his tuchas.” 6:30pm- In a press conference on Thu ...
