In this episode: Since taking total control of state government 25 years ago, Florida Republicans have systematically rolled back reforms that once kept state courts independent. It was a project launched by Jeb Bush, expanded by Rick Scott, and that has now culminated under Ron DeSantis with a Florida Supreme Court that is a rubber stamp for the governor and Legislature — and a roadblock for anyone who dares to challenge them. Learn more about how it happened from Martin Dyckman, a Florida journalist and historian whose investigative reporting once exposed Supreme Court corruption and spurred some of the very reforms that have been undone.Show notes:Read this Dyckman column in the Sun-Sentinel explaining some of the history and changes in more detail. And if you want to do a truly deep dive into the subject, check out his book: A Most Disorderly Court: Scandal and Reform in the Florida Judiciary (and don't forget his biographies of Govs. Reubin Askew and Leroy Collins, too).Questions or comments? We look back at arguably the most important Governor's race in Florida's History - the 1954 Governor's Race.
The Grove Museum inside the historic Call/Collins House is one of Tallahassee’s newest museums, and it’s changing how the city interprets its own history. Instead of focusing on the mansion house’s famous owners, including Florida Governor LeRoy Collins, Executive Director John Grandage oriented the museum around civil rights. Cleverly tracing how Collins’s thinking on race relations evolved, the museum uses the house and the land it sits on to tell the story of the forced removal of indigenous people from the area, the enslaved craftspeople who built the house, and the Tallahassee Bus Boycott. Grandage says the museum’s interpretive plan and focus on civil rights wouldn't have been possible without the work of Black Tallahassee institutions like John G. Riley House Museum created by Althemese Barnes or the Southeastern Regional Black Archives built from FAMU Professor James Eaton’s collection. In this episode recorded at the museum, Grandage describes how historic preservation has always been about what the dominant culture finds worth persevering, the museum’s genealogical role, and the white backlash to Collins’s moderate positions on civil rights. Importance of "dreaming", having courage, staying the course; "The Running Back" in bookstores now; movie coming soon!!
On this week's edition of The Florida History Podcast, we discuss Governor Leroy Collins historic work after leaving the Governorship. Collins played a critical and often under-discussed role in ensuring the Selma to Montgomery march went ahead and ran in 1968 for the US Senate - a race where his moderate racial views ran head on into racially-conservative late 1960's Florida.
In Episode 7 of Semi-Pro Gridiron Rant, Host Ken Anderson and special guest host David "Wolf" Parker rant about the newly released MLB schedule, NFL cancelling the H.O.F. game and ceremonies, and Dak's franchise tag deal! They welcome special guest Leroy Collins who shares his incredible true story where he went from a wheelchair to the NFL. Leroy shares many of his football stories, his book, and future plans. This is an episode any true sports fan just doesn't want to miss. Enjoy!!
Leroy Collins used his dream of making it to the NFL as motivation to learn how to walk again after a horrific childhood accident that resulted into him being pronounced dead for 8 minutes along with sustaining multiple broken bones, a brain injury, skin grafts being placed on over 40% of his body, and being told he will never talk or walk again. His obsession with his dream helped him to become the top high school running back in New York state, college football's 2nd leading rusher behind Ricky Williams one season, and going on to play for the Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars. Now he is sharing his story and the lessons that fueled him to become a motivational speaker, start his own fitness business, and create his own clothing line among other things.

EPISODE #124 | FROM THE WHEELCHAIR TO THE NFL Welcome to episode 124 of American Real, where this week we bring you the inspirational story of Leroy Collins. Leroy says, “In life, you are going to face many challenges. Challenges that are going to to make you want to give up. Challenges that are even going to question your existence. We must remember challenges are supposed to make us stronger, make us wiser.” In 1982, at the age of six, while playing outdoors with his younger brother, Ernie and his cousins, the unthinkable happened. Ernie ran into the street and Leroy tried to stop him from being hit by a U-Haul style truck, but it was too late. Ernie was hit first and then Leroy. The impact was hard and direct, as Leroy was tossed into the air before being run over by the truck which dragged him for a block and a half. The tragic story and Leroy’s survival is nothing less than a miracle, and it’s all documented in his newly released book, The Running Back: True Story From The Wheelchair To The NFL.
