The Government wants to change our drivers licensing system, but AA believes more improvements are needed to have a greater impact on the youth road toll. Among the changes are removing the full licence test, more consequences for drivers who commit traffic offences while on their learner or restricted licence, and a zero-alcohol limit for everyone until they reach a full licence.   AA Road Safety Spokesperson Dylan Thomsen joins the show to discuss the proposal. Choose My Drugs or My CDL. 170, 000 plus drivers will lose their CDL this November because of drugs. That's right, over 170,000 suspended CDL's on the horizon. Since the clearing house has been introduced, many truck drivers have been put on notice, choose your drugs or your CDL. Is addiction that strong? The answer is yes. Simply put, grown men have families to support and bills to pay but yet they take chances and consume illegal drugs knowing they can hurt their entire family with one failed drug screen. The issue lies with the RTD or the return to duty process. Drivers are required to complete a SAP or a Substance Abuse Program. They are then required to have 6 random DOT drugs screens completed. Thenproblem lies with carriers that fail or refuse to complete this process. Therefore the rules are changing. Trucking companies will no longer be able to hire drivers that have not completed to RTD, because their Lisence will now be automatically suspended until the process is complete. Be Careful Cops Can Keep Your Cash. Some time back a trucker was pulled over by the police. He was on his way from Louisiana to Texas. He claims he was on his way to buy a semi truck. In doing so he had brought a large amount of cash with him. Notice I said Large amount. In route he was pulled over and searched. Law enforcement did not believe his story and how he came across the large amount of money. The money was confiscated. Flash forward to a courts decision. Crime On The Road. When you have a concealed carry permit, you don't have the right to pull your gun out to scare people. It is not a Lisence to bully people. In fact, a Lisence to carry a gin bares more responsibility to the person that possesses it. Recently a trucker pulled a gun out and pointed it at a motorist. It sounded like there was road rage going on prior to the incident. A car cut the truck driver off coming into a construction zone and thats when the trucker acted. The driver in the car called 911 and the trucker was arrested. He is now facing up to 25 years in prison. When obtaining your carry permit, we are told to never pull a gun out unless we intend to use it. It is not a deterrent to end an argument. Many people have been arrested because they have misused the privilege they have been given. How Does A Trucker Get Picked For Smuggling Recently we talked about a trucker that was nabbed for smuggling illegal immigrants. over 50 people died in his reefer trailer, which had shut off without him knowing. He is now facing life in prison, along with the mastermind behind this horrific crime. We were wondering, how a trucker even gets the offer to do such a job? We all know that the average person will never even get the opportunity to smuggle humans in a tractor trailer. The reason they won't be asked, is because most truckers don't associate with kind of criminal element. The only truckers that will ever get an offer to do such things, are those of the baser sort. This is how it works people. The problem with using low lines to haul human beings in a semi truck and trailer is, they are usually not the smartest people. The type of driver that is willing to risk being in prison for life, is one that most likely when caught, will turn the rest of the bad guys in. He is also the kind of driver that comes with an higher rick of being caught. This is the only kind of driver that will take this risky job. Stop Pleading Guilty To Traffic Violations. Why do truckers and the general public keep agreeing with the police? When you get a ticket, you are still innocent till proven guilty in the USA! So why do you just pay the ticket and go about your business? I'll tell you why. Because it is convenient to just get it over with. Plus you feel you can't win in court. Especially against an officer of the law, right? Wrong! Did you know that, in the long run you suffer more when you plead guilty? Did you know that certain tickets can cost you a great job in the future? So why are you just giving up so easy? Look, the easy way is to just send the state money and admit to your guilt and the hard way is to fight it. Time is money right? Cell Phone Tickets in TruckingHow Cell Phone Tickets Effect Truckers. Truck drivers have a new disease that has sprung up in the last ten years. Its called a "Cell Phone Ticket". This is a very damaging disease, unfortunately this disease is not passed on by others. Instead just like other diseases that come from bad living and habits such as diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases that can be caused by lifestyle so can a cell phone ticket disease. If we choose to pick up a hand held device knowing it can kill our CDL, then we have made a bad choice. The effects that can come from this ticket are detrimental. One ticket like this and you eliminate 99% of any trucking company that will hire you. I Thats right, most carriers have insurance policies that will simply not allow them to hire a driver with a cell phone ticket. We recently spoke with a safety director about this issue and he told TalkCDL "if a driver chooses to use a cell phone in a commercial vehicle knowing the impact it can have on a truck drivers Lisence, then I will not hire that driver". We all know that taking your eyes off the road for 3 to 5 seconds at 70mph makes you unaware of the last 500 feet. That is more than enough time to lift your eyes and see that there is stopped traffic in front of you. Here is a question for everyone to ponder. How many times in a day while traveling do we come up on stopped traffic? Now ask yourself, how many times in a day do I pick up my cell phone to look at a text? Now ask yourself, when is both of those numbers going to match up? When is the time period of coming up on traffic that has come to a stop going to match up with the time Im looking at a text? It is only a matter of time. Hands Free and Voice Command Most cell phone provide hands free voice commands with their cell phones. Setting up your phone is easier than making toast. Most phones will walk you through the process. Phones even come with text commands. Thats right you now can tell your phone to text a message without having to touch it.
