In this episode of Unscripted, Jeff Thompson and Sree Roy dive into the everyday mix of tech talk and personal takes, all in the natural flow of conversation. Sree kicks things off with a trip to the Apple Store, exploring iPhone crossbody straps and even the Beats lanyard trend. The two reflect on the surprise availability of the iPhone 17—thin as air, in stock, and shipping in just two hours. They weigh the pros and cons of the standard model versus the Pro and Max, noting the absence of LiDAR on the base edition. Conversation shifts to tools of their trade: Jeff shares how microphones and room acoustics shape his podcasting workflow, from condenser mics to dynamic setups, and why his SSL 2+ interface is his go-to. Sree brings in his Blue Sparks condenser mic and Zoom PodTrak P4, plus a shout-out to iBugToday.org for its rich assistive tech resources. You can contact us at 612-367-6093. [This is one of the finalists in the 2025 review contest, written by an ACX reader who will remain anonymous until after voting is done. I'll be posting about one of these a week for several months. When you've read them all, I'll ask you to vote for a favorite, so remember which ones you liked] I. THE TASTE OF VICTORY The Tupinambá people ate their enemies. This fact scared Hans Staden, a German explorer who was captured by Tupinambá warriors in 1554, when they caught him by surprise during a hunting expedition. As their prisoner for nearly a year, Staden observed a number of their cannibalism rituals. They were elaborate, public affairs; here's a description of them from Duffy and Metcalf's The Return of Hans Staden, an assessment of Staden's voyage and claims: (Ch. 2, pg. 51-52) First a rope was placed around the neck of the captive so that he might not escape; at night the rope was tied to the hammock in which the captive slept. Straps that were not removed were placed above and below the knees. The captives were given women, who guarded them and also slept with them. These women were high-status daughters and sisters of chiefs; they were unmarried and sometimes gave birth to the child of a captive. Some of the captives might be held for a period of time until corn was planted and new large clay vessels—for drink and cooking flesh—were made. Guests were invited to the ceremony, and they often arrived eight to fifteen days in advance of it. A special small house was erected, with no walls but with a roof, in which the captives were placed with women and guards two or three days before the ceremony. In the other houses, feathers were prepared for a headdress or for body ornamentation, and inks were made for tattoos. Women and girls prepared fifty to one hundred vats of fermented manioc beer. Then, when all was ready, they painted the victim's face blue, mounted a headdress of wax covered with feathers on him, and wound a cotton cord around his waist. The guests began to drink in the afternoon and continued all through the night. At dawn, the one who was to do the killing came out with a long, painted wooden club and smashed the captive on the head, splitting it open. The attacker then withdrew for eight to fifteen days of abstinence while the others ate the cooked flesh of the captive and finished all of the drink made for the occasion. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/your-review-the-synaptic-plasticity

A Blog To Watch Weekly

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2025 97:15

This week's episode starts off in familiar aBlogtoWatch fashion — lighthearted banter, a touch of mischief, and just enough side-eye at industry quirks to keep things interesting. The first eyebrow-raiser? Tim Cook's awkward watch-related gift to Donald Trump, a moment that sparks a wider discussion on the sometimes-clumsy dance between corporations, politics, and tariffs. And those tariffs aren't just awkward— they're a genuine threat to the U.S. luxury watch market, nudging brands to rethink their American footprints and pushing watch enthusiasts to consider their buying habits. Then, the conversation shifts to the soul of watch collecting. Generic, personality-free assortments are roasted for their lack of spark, while outlandish collections (think Inspector Gadget wristwear) get a weird nod for their unapologetic individuality. This sets the stage for a string of playful “what-if” designs, from timidly “sheepish” straps to the gloriously bizarre “Bongo Bang” collector's piece. The episode isn't ALL hypothetical whimsy. The hosts spotlight three notable models that balance form, function, and market positioning: the retro-cool Glashütte Original 70s X Chronograph, Bulgari's travel-friendly yet distinct Octo Roma World Timer, and the versatile TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200. These watches hit the sweet spot where practicality meets emotional connection— a recurring theme as the team muses on the evolving tastes of luxury watch buyers.Other trends get airtime, too. Comfort and wearability are emerging as must-haves, solar-powered movements are winning over practical-minded enthusiasts, and defunct brands are enjoying a nostalgia-fueled revival. By episode's denouement, the tone circles back to humor, leaving listeners with a mix of market insight, design critique, and just enough absurdity to remind us why talking about watches never really gets old, especially when the straps are sheepish and the bongos are ready to bang.

This week's episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly ranges through a broad spectrum of topics, from geopolitical tariffs to cartoon-inspired timepieces — with plenty of hot takes along the way. The show kicks off with a deep dive into IWC's marketing strategy, highlighting how the brand skillfully ties its messaging to cultural moments and events. The conversation then pivots to travel and watch spotting, with the team discussing how being on the road reshapes their perspectives on watch culture. That dovetails into the real meat of the episode: the rising profile of German watchmaking, especially in light of new tariffs impacting Swiss watches. Brands like Glashütte Original are gaining traction stateside, and the guys muse about whether newcomers to the Glashütte scene might shift the balance in this traditionally Swiss-dominated industry. In a burst of pop-culture crossover, we explore Fossil's Marvel collaboration, which is part mass-market appeal and part celebrity endorsement (both real and hypothetical) — how do these influence public perception? The Citizen Promaster Skyhawk is praised for sheer utility, while the Seiko Datsun Limited Edition raises eyebrows over questionable branding decisions. The team riffs on the fine line between homage and gimmick, and Venezianico earns a nod for balancing fashion-forward flair with functional sensibilities. Of course, no aBlogtoWatch Weekly episode would be complete without a visit from Chives the Watch Butler, who once again brings levity and absurd charm. A brief but brilliant detour into cartoon-inspired watches and the bizarrely practical idea of a “watch for car detailers” reminds us that this hobby doesn't always have to take itself so seriously. This week the guys start by recapping their weekends of not getting in the club, going to Benihana's for the first time and the boy finishing his first 5k at 6 years old! They then recapped the NBA Draft and discussed if Ace Bailey went about the draft the 'right' way. During Quick Hits they discussed Candace Parker's jersey retirement, the WNBA All Star team captains and the announcement of 3 new WNBA expansion franchises which Breav goes on a rant about. And in Rule Breakers, they talk about the harm AI videos are bringing to the black community, Amerie vs '1 Thing' and Boots on the Ground ruining cruises. Enjoy!

The Boat Galley
Galley Straps on a Boat - Do They Help or Harm?

Some cruisers think galley straps are a great safety item. I disagree. Here's why. Summary An important feature of a well-designed cruising boat galley is safety for the cook--ensuring they aren't tossed around the boat in rough seas. Many cruisers think galley straps solve the problem. But I believe they can make things worse--particularly the ones I saw on my friend's boat. What are the major issues? 1) Straps confine the cook in front of fire and hot pans with no ability to move away. 2)Straps don't help if you need access to other areas like lockers or the sink. 3) You need two hands to clip yourself in, making it difficult when you need something elsewhere in the galley. But other options might work for you, depending on your galley shape. In a U-shaped galley, a strap across the opening can keep you from being thrown too far without confining you against the stove. L-shaped galleys might benefit from a diagonal strap. And in a long galley, a strap along the length might help. I prefer other methods of wedging myself in while cooking. But if you go for a galley strap, keep these concerns in mindto keep yourself safe. For more details, listen to the full podcast.
