The country's recorded its deadliest King's Birthday Weekend on the roads in a decade. Three people were killed in a two-car collision on the Desert Road early yesterday morning, following two crashes in Taupō, a crash on Waiheke Island, and a crash in Dunedin. That brings the total number of deaths to at least seven. AA Road Safety Spokesperson Dylan Thomsen told Francesca Rudkin overall road deaths are falling but are still higher than other countries. He says we're improving, but this weekend just shows how a few moments can destroy people's lives. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Crafting Sustainable Architecture in Urban NeighborhoodsCrafting sustainable architecture in urban neighborhoods requires more than good design. It takes technical skill, strong partnerships, and a deep understanding of how people live in cities. In this episode, Lauren Thomsen shares how she approaches high-performance residential design through collaboration, adaptive reuse, and thoughtful renovation work in Philadelphia.Lauren discusses her path from architecture school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to launching her own practice, Lauren Thomsen Design. She explains how historic renovations and urban infill projects shaped her design philosophy over time. In addition, she shares practical advice for architects working with contractors, navigating tight city sites, and balancing sustainability with client expectations. The conversation also explores the future of small residential firms and the value of multidisciplinary thinking. Lauren reflects on teaching architecture, building a client-focused business, and creating homes that perform well for decades. As a result, listeners will walk away with clear insights into sustainable design, urban renovation strategy, and the realities of running a modern architecture practice. This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, Crafting Sustainable Architecture in Urban Neighborhoods with Lauren Thomsen.Learn more about Lauren at Lauren Thomsen Design, or connect with her on LinkedIn and Instagram. Please Visit Our Platform SponsorsArcatemy is Arcat's Continuing Education Program. Wachstums schmerzen - Joscha Thomsen - 17.05.2026 - LFG Lübeck by Leuchtfeuer Gemeinde
Join the Women in Seed Production Network as we talk to Paige Thomsen-Russ, who shares insights from her 25-plus year career in the agriculture industry. Paige discusses her journey from being a collegiate athlete to helping build a biological soil health company and eventually returning to seed production, where she now manages the "adrenaline rush" of crop planning and grower contracting. She reflects on the resilience required to navigate early career skepticism as a female agronomist, detailing how she turned initial doubt into deep, trust-based relationships with her growers. The conversation explores how her competitive spirit drives her to master her role while acknowledging the importance of positive self-talk to manage the pressure of being her own toughest critic. As a mentor to young women in the industry, Paige emphasizes the value of being confident, setting daily goals, and leaning on available resources when facing challenges. She concludes the episode by encouraging listeners to challenge themselves daily with the empowering reminder that they are stronger than they know.

The guest on the ninety-fourth episode is Claus Thomsen, the CEO of the Danish League. Throughout the conversation, Claus reflects on the Superliga's evolution since 2007, detailing the structural shifts that created today's format, explains how Denmark became a premier European talent incubator, leveraging systematic academy investments and "strategic bureaucracy" to become the ultimate bridge to the Premier League. He discusses the "Matchday Production" model, where the League took control of its own broadcast output to empower clubs and engage fans directly. From navigating the complexities of Multi-Club Ownership to implementing automated facial recognition for stadium safety, Claus emphasizes a management style rooted in transparency and collective growth. He offers a candid critique of the expanding international calendar, arguing that domestic leagues are the "backbone" of the sport that must be protected from cannibalization. By prioritizing sustainability over endless expansion, Claus provides a masterclass on how mid-sized leagues can punch above their weight in a globalized market.

Police officers dished out one speeding fine for every minute of last year as they cracked down on dangerous driving. More than 500,000 fines were issued over 2025, double the number issued six years ago. The figures are only fines from officers - not speeding cameras. AA road safety spokesman Dylan Thomsen says it's unclear exactly what drove this data, but it's likely there was extra pressure on the police. "Road policing officers were sometimes covering other duties and having to do those kinds of things, spread themselves around. But in the last couple of years, that has changed, there's been a big focus, once again, on being back out on the roads." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode of Politics in Question, Lee chats with Danielle Thomsen about the role of money in politics. Thomsen is a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine and author of The Money Signal: How Fundraising Matters in American Politics (The University of Chicago Press, 2025). How does our current fundraising landscape reinforce inequality in politics? Who typically donates to political campaigns? How has the role of money in politics evolved over the last decade? These are some of the questions Lee explores in this week's episode. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The groundbreaking Pinnacle Architecture paper has sent shockwaves through the quantum computing industry by demonstrating that RSA-2048 encryption could potentially be cracked with just 100,000 physical qubits. This is a massive order-of-magnitude reduction from previous estimates that once reached into the millions. Join host Konstantinos Karagiannis as he sits down with Felix Thomsen and Paul Webster from Iceberg Quantum as they explain the techniques in the paper and its serious potential ramifications. By leveraging high-efficiency LDPC codes and a novel modular architecture, the team explains how they've bridged the gap between theoretical quantum error correction and practical hardware implementation, effectively accelerating the timeline toward Q-Day. More than one quantum computing hardware roadmap has us reaching 100,000 physical qubits before 2030! And there's no reason to believe future work couldn't lower the qubit requirements even more. Beyond the security implications, the architecture is also a blueprint for the first generation of utility-scale quantum systems. Thomsen and Webster detail how their modular design—featuring dedicated processing units, magic engines, and shared memory—can be optimized for “slow” hardware like trapped ions or applied to life-changing scientific breakthroughs in quantum chemistry and material science. Whether you are a cryptographer bracing for the post-quantum transition or a scientist eager to see the first practical applications of fault-tolerant quantum computing, you'll need to understand this paper's potential impact. In this episode of From the Tap, architect Lauren Thomsen, principal of Philadelphia-based Lauren Thomsen Design, talks about the challenge of modernizing older homes while honoring their character and incorporating sustainable systems.
“Oil company management has to understand that its business is essentially a technology business. It's not a marketing business.” In this episode of Seismic Soundoff, Andrew Geary speaks with Dr. Leon Thomsen about his memoir, “‘Surely You're Joking, Mr. Thomsen!': Adventures of a Petroleum Scientist,” and a career that helped redefine applied geophysics. Leon reflects on the experiences that shaped his scientific mindset, from early exposure to field crews, to formative lessons in geology at Caltech, to decades of research in academia and industry. He explains how curiosity-driven exploration led him to recognize the importance of seismic anisotropy and shear-wave technology, work that ultimately carried trillion-dollar implications for hydrocarbon exploration. The conversation also explores why transformative ideas often struggle inside large organizations, how a lack of technological literacy in management can lead to missed opportunities, and why applied science can be every bit as creative and demanding as pure research. Looking ahead, Leon shares his perspective on the future of applied geophysics, including opportunities in fracking optimization, carbon sequestration monitoring, and subsurface hydrogen exploration, and offers encouragement to young scientists preparing to navigate the energy transition. KEY TAKEAWAYS > Energy is a technology business: Long-term success depends on leadership that understands and trusts science, not just short-term metrics. > Applied science is real science: Solving practical problems can be as intellectually challenging and rewarding as purely theoretical work. > The next frontier is subsurface innovation: Geophysics will play a critical role in fracking efficiency, CO₂ monitoring, and hydrogen exploration during the energy transition. Happy Halloween everybody! Here's our scariest offering yet: a failson vanity project by a Getty scion who did so much meth it ultimately killed him Friend of the show and man who was not torn apart by dogs on October 26th 2025 as foretold by Afroman, Thomsen (@mood_probiotic), joins us to talk about 2017's The Evil Within (original title The Storyteller), the first and last film by Andrew Getty, brought to you by decades of billionaire psycho familial trauma and an insane amount of meth. Starring real actors and shot with a real production budget in the early 2000s, The Evil Within is a movie about a mentally disabled man who is tormented by his evil mirror double Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) into doing a Son of Sam style serial killing to open his own personal Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It's like if Tommy Wiseau had 20% of David Lynch's artistry and sleep paralysis every night of his life. Plus, Thomsen tells the most insane story ever shared on the podcast. In today's episode, East-German born, New York based artist, Cornelia Thomsen shares her story of finding her way into becoming an artist. She gives insights into her socialistic upbringing in a small village near Dresden, and how she managed to get accepted to be trained as a porcelain painter at famous Meissen Porcelain Manufactory.Cornelia (a humble powerhouse!) shares how she had believed that the world she lived in would be it, until the Fall of the Berlin Wall, when she stormed into the big world and embraced it. Her worldview became liberated by the discovery of abstract art.Cornelia talks about resilience being her super power, and how she persistently worked as an artists, went to art school near Frankfurt (with two small children at home), moved to New York and started a gallery together with her husband (and meanwhile 3 children). Cornelia and I have known each other for almost 20 years, sharing experiences and emotions, raising children in Manhattan - an East German and a West German united on neutral grounds. Her work has been shown internationally, and is in collections of world renowned museums like LACMA in LA, museum of fine arts in Houston, the Parrasch Art Museum in Watermill, New York and others.AND: In August, just briefly after recording this episode, her newest series of works, the complete sets of Golden Ratio Series have been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.#### On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS' Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas.
