Queer theory and reproductive justice need each other—now more than ever. As liberals and leftists increasingly frame reproductive justice in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, often adopting the language of “queerness,” it has become difficult to see that their political demands and strategies are often quite conservative. In Reproductive Justice, Queerly (U California Press, 2026), Carly Thomsen examines typical reproductive justice issues—including abortion, surrogacy, crisis pregnancy centers, paid parental leave, and parenting—in queer ways. She shows what can happen when we bring queer theory and reproductive justice together: a queerer, more powerful articulation of what we are fighting for. The Automobile Association wants optional road code refreshers offered at every licence renewal to address gaps in driver knowledge. It suggests people opting in could get a renewal discount. A recent survey shows on average, drivers only correctly answered 68 percent of road rules questions. AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen says the consequences of these knowledge gaps could be quite serious. "When you get it wrong on the roads, the consequences can be people getting hurt, can be vehicles getting damaged, can be insurance costs, panel beating, all of these things - so I think the consequences are a bit more than 70 percent." The Allplane Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2026

Marie Owens Thomsen, Chief Economist and SVP Sustainability at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has emerged as one of the most outspoken voices in the aviation decarbonization debate. Is the European Emissions Trading System (ETS) fit for purpose? Are the EU's current sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandates fit for purpose? Are airlines carrying a fair share of the decarbonization cost burden? These are some of the questions Marie addresses regularly at industry conferences, and that we discuss in depth in today's episode. As a preview: while agreeing with the Net Zero 2050 goal, Marie - and IATA for that matter - believes the current regulatory framework in Europe is badly designed and fails to account for the dynamics of both the aviation and energy industries. True, IATA is not an impartial actor in this discussion, as it obviously represents the interests of its member airlines. But as the main target of these regulations, airlines are certainly entitled to have their voice heard, if only because, with an average profit margin that has never exceeded the low single digits, any poorly designed regulation can seriously damage an industry that is, after all, one of the pillars of global economic growth and an and an enabler of trade, tourism, human connection, and all sort of other opportunities.IATA has made its case with figures and studies, yet it's often Marie's sharp commentary that often drives IATA's point home. It is illustrative that this conversation was, in fact, originally planned to last around 45 minutes, but the topic has so many consequential angles that we ended up talking for considerably longer, discussing what could realistically be done to ensure the airline industry meets its environmental commitments without putting its future in jeopardy. So tune in for a fascinating conversation about sustainability, environmental regulation and what these mean for airlines with IATA's Chief Economist, Marie Owens Thomsen!

Lauren Thomsen's profound connection to architectural environments began with a deeply formative childhood event when she was just seven years old. After her family made the decision to relocate, a young Lauren found herself sitting in the back of her mother's realtor's car, completely mesmerized as they toured a wide array of houses. Walking through those highly varied layouts, she experienced an architectural epiphany, intensely imagining the entirely different types of lives she might live within each distinct boundary. This early realization that spatial layout directly dictates the quality of human life established a permanent lane that she would follow into her adult career. Before gaining the confidence to launch her own independent firm, Lauren pursued a rigorous academic path and built a strong foundation inside prestigious, high-stakes design studios. She describes her years spent working under established mentors as an invaluable phase where she learned the complex operational realities of translating abstract blueprints into physical structures. However, as she sharpened her technical skills, she increasingly felt a strong internal push to express her own unique, holistic design language—one that favored soulful intention and longevity over fast-paced corporate execution. This desire for creative alignment ultimately led to the founding of Philadelphia-based Lauren Thomsen Design. For Lauren, stepping into entrepreneurship was not driven by individual vanity, but by a necessity to craft a practice that could seamlessly blend rigorous architectural discipline with an empathetic understanding of her clients' personal narratives. Her journey stands as a powerful masterclass for emerging designers, illustrating how a pure childhood fascination with spatial possibilities can mature into a celebrated, forward-looking architectural studio.

The country's recorded its deadliest King's Birthday Weekend on the roads in a decade. Three people were killed in a two-car collision on the Desert Road early yesterday morning, following two crashes in Taupō, a crash on Waiheke Island, and a crash in Dunedin. That brings the total number of deaths to at least seven. AA Road Safety Spokesperson Dylan Thomsen told Francesca Rudkin overall road deaths are falling but are still higher than other countries. He says we're improving, but this weekend just shows how a few moments can destroy people's lives. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A suggestion Kiwi drivers should focus on themselves, with the myth blaming foreign drivers for our worst crashes busted. Ministry of Transport data shows overseas drivers were involved in only 18 of New Zealand's 292 road deaths in 2024. Of 2400 crashes resulting in serious injuries, only about 100 involved overseas drivers. Automobile Association safety spokesperson, Dylan Thomsen, says he'd love Kiwis to keep safer following distances. "It means that when somebody does something in front of you that you weren't expecting, you've actually got more time to react to it." Police officers dished out one speeding fine for every minute of last year as they cracked down on dangerous driving. More than 500,000 fines were issued over 2025, double the number issued six years ago. The figures are only fines from officers - not speeding cameras. AA road safety spokesman Dylan Thomsen says it's unclear exactly what drove this data, but it's likely there was extra pressure on the police. "Road policing officers were sometimes covering other duties and having to do those kinds of things, spread themselves around. But in the last couple of years, that has changed, there's been a big focus, once again, on being back out on the roads." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The groundbreaking Pinnacle Architecture paper has sent shockwaves through the quantum computing industry by demonstrating that RSA-2048 encryption could potentially be cracked with just 100,000 physical qubits. This is a massive order-of-magnitude reduction from previous estimates that once reached into the millions. Join host Konstantinos Karagiannis as he sits down with Felix Thomsen and Paul Webster from Iceberg Quantum as they explain the techniques in the paper and its serious potential ramifications. By leveraging high-efficiency LDPC codes and a novel modular architecture, the team explains how they've bridged the gap between theoretical quantum error correction and practical hardware implementation, effectively accelerating the timeline toward Q-Day. More than one quantum computing hardware roadmap has us reaching 100,000 physical qubits before 2030! And there's no reason to believe future work couldn't lower the qubit requirements even more.   Beyond the security implications, the architecture is also a blueprint for the first generation of utility-scale quantum systems. Thomsen and Webster detail how their modular design—featuring dedicated processing units, magic engines, and shared memory—can be optimized for “slow” hardware like trapped ions or applied to life-changing scientific breakthroughs in quantum chemistry and material science. Whether you are a cryptographer bracing for the post-quantum transition or a scientist eager to see the first practical applications of fault-tolerant quantum computing, you'll need to understand this paper's potential impact.   For more information on Iceberg Quantum, visit https://www.iceberg-quantum.com/.     To read the Pinnacle paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.11457. Visit Protiviti at www.protiviti.com/US-en/technology-consulting/quantum-computing-services  to learn more about how Protiviti is helping organizations get post-quantum ready.  Follow host Konstantinos Karagiannis on all socials: @KonstantHacker and follow Protiviti Technology on LinkedIn and X: @ProtivitiTech.             Questions and comments are welcome!  Theme song by David Schwartz, copyright 2021.  The views expressed by the participants of this program are their own and do not represent the views of, nor are they endorsed by, Protiviti Inc., The Post-Quantum World, or their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, representatives, shareholders, or subsidiaries.  None of the content should be considered investment advice, as an offer or solicitation of an offer to buy or sell, or as an endorsement of any company, security, fund, or other securities or non-securities offering. “Oil company management has to understand that its business is essentially a technology business. It's not a marketing business.” In this episode of Seismic Soundoff, Andrew Geary speaks with Dr. Leon Thomsen about his memoir, “‘Surely You're Joking, Mr. Thomsen!': Adventures of a Petroleum Scientist,” and a career that helped redefine applied geophysics. Leon reflects on the experiences that shaped his scientific mindset, from early exposure to field crews, to formative lessons in geology at Caltech, to decades of research in academia and industry. He explains how curiosity-driven exploration led him to recognize the importance of seismic anisotropy and shear-wave technology, work that ultimately carried trillion-dollar implications for hydrocarbon exploration. The conversation also explores why transformative ideas often struggle inside large organizations, how a lack of technological literacy in management can lead to missed opportunities, and why applied science can be every bit as creative and demanding as pure research. Looking ahead, Leon shares his perspective on the future of applied geophysics, including opportunities in fracking optimization, carbon sequestration monitoring, and subsurface hydrogen exploration, and offers encouragement to young scientists preparing to navigate the energy transition. KEY TAKEAWAYS > Energy is a technology business: Long-term success depends on leadership that understands and trusts science, not just short-term metrics. > Applied science is real science: Solving practical problems can be as intellectually challenging and rewarding as purely theoretical work. > The next frontier is subsurface innovation: Geophysics will play a critical role in fracking efficiency, CO₂ monitoring, and hydrogen exploration during the energy transition.
