Thomas Frank, author of What's the Matter with Kansas, Listen Liberal, and Pity the Billionaire is in town this month visiting his Dad. He'll be on the Heartland Labor Forum this week and we'll ask him, “What's the matter now, Tom?” We'll get his take on populism, the Democrats and what the Wuhan lab leak […] The post What's the Matter with Thomas Frank? appeared first on KKFI.
When we scheduled an interview with historian & populism expert Thomas Frank, we didn't expect to be recording with a right wing faux-populist coup in the background. Turns out, he was an ideal guest. Frank helped us to understand our current political moment by examining history of populism in this country from the 1890s through the Bernie revolution. Over the course of two action packed hours, the author of What's The Matter With Kansas, Listen Liberal, and The People, No explains how we got here and how we're most likely to get out of this mess. Virgil and Brie react in real time to the ongoing protests, Brie's groceries spoil, and Paul Robeson sings. Find Bad Faith on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Google, and our RSS feed. In episode 6 we (Jon and Matt) address a hypothetical counter argument. Frequently, those drawing attention to the problems of American society are met with a response that demands that they also have a solution to these societal ills. We start by dismissing idea that it is incumbent upon person pointing out problems to also have a solution to those problems. However, we do propose some policies that would likely shift our domestic and foreign policies in a far more beneficial direction. Some issues that we propose solutions for: The United States and its total disregard for international law and the ICC Mass Incarceration Extreme wealth inequality Unequal access to healthcare A culture that is disturbingly jingoistic and reverent of militarism while also willingly ignorant or accepting of extreme economic inequality Mentioned in the podcast: Listen Liberal and What's the Matter with Kansas by Thomas Frank We have a corresponding blog at inthecontextofempire.com Social Media: Twitter- @Mattylongruns

Thomas Frank is a historian, journalist and author of "Listen Liberal", "What's The Matter With Kansas", and his newest, "The People, No: A Brief History Of Anti-Populism." We talk the history of populism, how's it's been demonized throughout time and how that same thing is happening again today.
The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism From the prophetic author of the now-classic What’s the Matter with Kansas? and Listen, Liberal, an eye-opening account of populism, the most important―and misunderstood―movement of our time. Rarely does a work of history contain startling implications for the present, but in The People, No Thomas Frank pulls off that explosive effect by showing us that everything we think we know about populism is wrong. Today “populism” is seen as a frightening thing, a term pundits use to describe the racist philosophy of Donald Trump and European extremists. But this is a mistake. The real story of populism is an account of enlightenment and liberation; it is the story of American democracy itself, of its ever-widening promise of a decent life for all. Taking us from the tumultuous 1890s, when the radical left-wing Populist Party―the biggest mass movement in American history―fought Gilded Age plutocrats to the reformers’ great triumphs under Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, Frank reminds us how much we owe to the populist ethos. Frank also shows that elitist groups have reliably detested populism, lashing out at working-class concerns. The anti-populist vituperations by the Washington centrists of today are only the latest expression. Frank pummels the elites, revisits the movement’s provocative politics, and declares true populism to be the language of promise and optimism. The People, No is a ringing affirmation of a movement that, Frank shows us, is not the problem of our times, but the solution for what ails us.

I've been hosting this show for over a dozen years now. Although I enjoy speaking with all of my guests, there are a handful with whom I love conversing. Today's guest, Thomas Frank, is one of those. He's the author of some essential books including "What's the Matter with Kansas," "Listen Liberal," "The Wrecking Crew" and many others... his newest one throws the covers off around populism, "The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism". I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I know I will!
We love books here at Civic Ventures, and writer, book reviewer, and former bookseller Paul Constant is the first person on the team that we go to for recommendations. Today, we’re excited to share his thoughts about ‘Listen, Liberal’ by Thomas Frank in his first book review for the podcast! According to Paul, ‘Listen, Liberal’ just might have the power to make Democrats relevant again. So cozy up, press play, and let Paul tell you about a book. Pair with a cup of tea. bonus: https://www.patreon.com/posts/20353124 Gable Pacheco and I talk to Thomas Frank at a live taping of the Katie Halper Show. Frank, the author of "What's the Matter with Kansas" and "Listen Liberal," whose writing appears in The Guardian and Harpers has just come out with "Rendezvous with Oblivion," a collection of essays. Thomas talks to us about how Hillary Clinton could have won, what turned him from Republican to Democrat, what turns him off about the Democrats, and what turned him from academic to journalist.
Thomas Frank is the author of two of the most important books on American politics in the last decade. “What's the Matter with Kansas” explored why lower socioeconomic voters vote reliably Republican in certain jurisdictions in the United States and the role that culture plays in that decision. And then “Listen Liberal” released in 2016 outlines the issues with the Democratic Party and why—if the Republicans govern for the 1 percent—Democrats don't govern for the 99 percent. Thomas Frank joins us to talk about those books, income inequality, and working-class voters in American politics.
On Reality Asserts Itself, Thomas Frank, author of Listen Liberal, says Democratic Party administrations allowed the big banks to run economic policy and create exploding income inequality – with host Paul Jay. This episode was produced on December 28, 2017.
On Reality Asserts Itself, Thomas Frank author of "What's the Matter with Kansas" and "Listen LIberal", tells host Paul Jay that Bill Clinton tried to drive the left from the party, saying were naive and could never win; now that Hillary lost they are blaming the left for the defeat Visit http://therealnews.com for more stories and help support our work by donating at http://therealnews.com/donate.

We'll catch up with The Great Thomas Frank, and get his thoughts on what it's like living in the Age of Trump. And Michael Brooks from The Majority Report will be here to rundown some of the biggest news stories of the week.
This week, we bring you a Democratic party autopsy, of sorts. But it's not likely to be the one sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee. And in fact, much of it was written before the election took place, and written by our guest, author Thomas Frank, whose 2016 book, "LISTEN LIBERAL" now, in many ways seem prophetic. But speaking of the Democratic National Committee, their future is now up in the air and it won't be settled until a new leader for the organization is chosen. And the way it's shaking out, the race to run the DNC could come down to Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison and outgoing Labor Secretary Tom Perez who, on the surface, don't appear to be all that different. So what's all the shouting about? We'll take a deeper look. Meanwhile, the Cabinet of president-elect Donald Trump is taking shape and it's looking more and more like an exercise in irony, as the candidate who ran against elites continues to populate his administration with people who will, if anything, be even more... So what happened in 2021? Democrats and Republicans definitely both sucked. Covid got better and then a lot worse. Dems didn't do the one thing to ensure they'd never lose another election. And politics turned from policy to pure culture war. We go through it all, why it happened, why it sucked, and what it means for 2022. Plus, Biden's giving up on Covid (and has something in his throat), Republicans embrace unemployment for certain people, and a sad announcement before a final penis story.
