This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit andrewsullivan.substack.comBatya is a journalist and author. She's a columnist for The Free Press, a co-host of The Group Chat on 2Way, and the author of two books: Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy, and Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women. Her forthcoming book is about, as she puts it, “why Jews are Democrats and why the left turned on the Jews.”For two clips of our convo — on Trump's class warfare, and deporting non-citizens over speech — head to our YouTube page.Other topics: raised in an Orthodox family; debating issues with her parents and five siblings during Shabbat; spending high school in Israel; same-sex education; the mikveh; how sexual desire is better with limitations; becoming secular for a decade; getting a PhD in English literature; her “accidental” entry into journalism during Hurricane Sandy; the Great Awokening in media; Trump's despicable character; his fickle tariffs; his tax cuts; Congress ceding power to Trump; Biden's tariffs; his investment in factories and infrastructure; his disastrous immigration policy; Batya's evolving views on Trump; marriage equality; Bostock; trans activist ideology; Trump's EO on trans servicemembers; Scott Bessent; the overreach of neoliberalism; Adam Smith; the tax cuts in the BBB; crypto; defunding science at Harvard; gutting USAID; the State Dept's AI surveillance; the 1952 McCarthyite law; Öztürk and Khalil; UNRWA and Gaza; Israel striking Iran; and the possibility of regime change. There were eight clashes over facts in the episode. Chris ran them through Grok, which one presumes would not be too biased against Trump. You can read the eight back-and-forths on the web version of the episode. You should listen and, with these independent sources in mind, decide for yourself on the facts. I think I missed the mark a little a couple of times, but was specifically wrong in assuming that Batya was all in on the war against Iran and always had been. I apologize for that — and for getting a bit too amped up. I should try not to do that when I'm a host and I hope Batya will forgive me. But a vast amount of the chat was nonetheless delightful — and this is a stressful time. Coming up on the Dishcast: Paul Elie on crypto-religion in ‘80s pop culture, Walter Isaacson on Ben Franklin, Tara Zahra on the revolt against globalization after WWI, Thomas Mallon on the AIDS crisis, and Johann Hari turning the tables to interview me. (NS Lyons has indefinitely postponed a pod appearance — and his own substack — because he just accepted an appointment at the State Department; and the Arthur Brooks pod is postponed because of calendar conflicts.) Please send any guest recs, dissents, and other comments to dish@andrewsullivan.com.

What Is Going On At The DNC? Breaking Down The State Dept.'s Shake-up (with Gabe Kaminsky)

Politics Politics Politics

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2025 68:17

David Hogg, the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, announced he's spending $20 million through his group, Leaders We Deserve, to primary sitting Democratic incumbents. He's targeting safe-seat veterans, mostly older members, and it's kicking off a full-blown internal fight.DNC chair Ken Martin isn't having it. He's proposing a rule that would ban DNC leaders from participating in partisan primaries — meaning Hogg would either have to step down or drop the activist role. The rule's set to be debated at the DNC's August meeting, and Hogg's already digging in, saying he'll fight to stay. Martin's also announced a $1 million-a-month allocation to state parties, saying the DNC needs to decentralize. The real translation? Tension is so high they're trying to buy unity. But here's the thing — I actually think Hogg is right. The Democratic Party would benefit from some turnover. There are plenty of incumbents who have grown comfortable, complacent, and maybe even a little out of step. At the same time, that's only half the issue. Because the problem with tossing out incumbents is you need to replace them with winners. These older Democrats have won election after election, and that's not something you just replicate by parachuting in a 24-year-old with a TikTok following and a podcast. Safe seats aren't invincible. Primaries can backfire. And while I'm all for change, I'm also for winning. The larger problem here is that you can't be both the referee and the quarterback. If you're helping to write the rules for how the party operates, you don't get to break them for your own political goals. It's not about silencing voices — it's about basic conflict of interest. If the DNC is supposed to be the governing body that creates a level playing field, its leaders can't be in the middle of bloodying that field themselves.Hogg was already a controversial pick. He's got detractors inside and outside the party. He's drawn criticism not just from Republicans or centrists, but even from fellow gun control activists. The fact that this move feels more like a campaign than a strategic plan doesn't help. It feels loud. It feels disruptive. And in a moment when Democrats are trying to project unity — especially heading into an election where every House seat could make or break their control — it feels reckless. The reality is that American politics is in a narrow-band era. Gerrymandering, polarization, and party-line voting mean that major swings are less likely. Which makes every seat even more valuable. We're not in a 60-seat blowout environment anymore. We're in a +5, -5, maybe +15 cycle. That means replacing a proven vote-getter with someone untested — even in a “safe” district — can be dangerous. So yeah, I think Hogg is right that the party needs to evolve. But I also think he's wrong to do it this way. Because if it leads to chaos, to even a few avoidable losses, he's not just risking some outdated Democrats — he's risking the whole agenda. And if he's not willing to see that, then maybe Ken Martin's rule isn't such a bad idea after all.Check out Gabe's reporting at The Free Press!Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:55 - DNC Confusion00:05:43 - Interview with Gabe Kaminsky00:25:39 - Update00:25:58 - Ukraine Peace Deal00:29:42 - Voter ID00:31:24 - Canadian Election00:36:40 - Interview with Gabe Kaminsky, continued01:03:33 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. On this edition of Parallax Views, the Quincy Institute's Dr. Annelle Sheline, a frequent guest on the program and a former Biden-era State Dept. official who resigned over the U.S. handling of Gaza, returns to discuss her briefing "Under Primacy, Weapons Sales Will Always Supersede Human Rights". But first we discuss the article she recently co-wrote for Responsible Statecraft entitled "Trump drops news bomblet: Direct US-Iran talks this Saturday". The conversation begins with a discussion of Netanyahu's meeting with Donald Trump earlier this week and some talk about the upcoming talks between the U.S. and Iran. We then get into the main event of this conversation: the ways in which weapons sales have trumped human rights rhetoric in U.S. foreign policy. For as much as the United States has often talked about human rights, it has often sold weapons to autocratic human rights abusers. We'll discuss a number of historical moments related to this including the assassination of Salvador Allende and the bloody Chile coup of 1973, Jimmy Carter vs. Ronald Reagan on human rights & U.S. foreign policy, the Iran-Contra affair, the legacies of the Cold War and the Global War on Terror, how wars abroad often lead to repression at home (and concerns about Trump's plans for pro-Palestinian voices in America), bridging the gap between human rights and realism/U.S. national interests, a brief look at the Leahy Laws, sanctions and weapons sales, the U.S.'s unconditional support of Israel's actions in Gaza as undermining claims to defending human rights, and much, much more.

Trump authorizes targeted bombing in Yemen, Nigerian Court upholds death sentence of Christian, Franklin Graham urges Zelenskyy to call for national day of prayer

It's Tuesday, March 18th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Nigerian Court upholds death sentence of Christian The Nigerian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for a man who attempted to defend himself when attacked by the radical Muslim sect known as the Fulani.  Truth Nigeria has reported that a Christian farmer named Sunday Jackson had been sentenced to death by a Muslim judge three years ago. As the Christian was attacked and repeatedly stabbed by a knife-wielding Fulani, Jackson wrested the weapon from him, and stabbed that attacker with the Muslim's own knife. Human rights activist and pastor Dr. William Terence Devlin, who has been advocating for Jackson internationally, expressed his deep disappointment. He said, “This is a failure of the Nigerian justice system. By any legal or moral standard, this man is innocent.” The Open Doors World Watch List rates the country of Nigeria as the seventh most persecuting nation in the world.  Additionally, 69% of the 4,476 Christians martyred worldwide last year were from Nigeria. State Dept. might designate Nigeria “Country of Particular Concern” Millions of Nigerian Christians have been severely oppressed by the militant Islamic groups and their own government for over a decade now. As of last week, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa held a hearing entitled  “Conflict and Persecution in Nigeria: the Case for a CPC Designation.”  Despite the kidnappings, murders, and injustices perpetuated and tolerated by the nation, the Biden administration had removed Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” in 2021.  But let us remember that Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them.” Lowest favorability rating ever for Democrats A recent CNN poll finds the favorability of the Democrat Party is at the lowest in recorded history.   The favorability rating among American adults dipped to 29% in early March, a 20% decline from January 2021. Among Democrats, 52% say their party is going in the wrong direction. The same survey found that 9% more Americans say the president is too extreme, compared to those who say the same thing of the Republican Party. That gap has diminished from 18% in 2022. Trump put 1,300 Voice of America journalists on leave More than 1,300 journalists, producers and staff at Voice of America have been notified they were placed on administrative leave on Saturday.  The VOA's parent organization, The U.S. Agency for Global Media, employs 3,500 people with a budget of a little less than $1 billion per year. That's about the size of the budget for Fox News or CNN. But somewhat less than the annual budget for The Worldview in 5 Minutes; we might add. We employ three part-timers. 42 Americans died in natural disasters At least 42 Americans died over the weekend by natural disasters brought by God's sovereign and almighty power to this country. Wildfires destroyed houses and structures in Kansas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, and Oklahoma. An EF-3 tornado in Missouri, with winds between 136 and 165 mph, killed twelve people, and another EF-3 tornado killed three people in Arkansas. One EF-4 tornado, with winds of 166-200 mph, followed up. Also, a massive collision of 55 vehicles on I-70 in Kansas, due largely to high winds and a dust storm, resulted in eight more deaths, reports CBS News. Trump authorizes targeted bombing in Yemen President Donald Trump authorized U.S. airstrikes on Iran-based Houthi rebel targets in Yemen resulting in 53 deaths over the weekend, reports Fox News. The attacks were carried out by fighter jets from the Harry S Truman aircraft carrier, now in the northern Red Sea, as well as Air Force attack planes, and armed drones launched from bases in the region. In response to the war between Israel and Hamas, the Houthi terrorists initially said they were attacking ships connected with Israel, or heading to or from there. However, many of the vessels they've attacked have no connection with Israel. They have launched dozens of missile and drone attacks on commercial ships. Of these, 34 have resulted in reported damage to the vessels, reports the BBC. Major shipping companies have stopped using the Red Sea -- through which almost 15% of global seaborne trade usually passes -- and are using a much longer route around southern Africa instead. In a Truth Social post on March 15, President Trump wrote, "They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones. We will use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective." Appearing on Fox News, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth didn't pull any punches. HEGSETH: “We're sitting on four years of deferred maintenance from Joe Biden, where in particular, when you talk about the Houthis, they were allowed for over 100 times to shoot at U.S. ships, to shoot at commercial shipping. Four months ago, when we sent a ship through, it was shot at 17 times. Ships haven't been able to go through for over a year without being shot at. “Freedom of navigation is basic. It's a core national interest. The minute the Houthis say, ‘We'll stop shooting at your ships. We'll stop shooting at your drones,' this campaign will end. But, until then, it will be unrelenting. “We got the reports last night. The Houthi capital felt like an earthquake, dozens and dozens of precision, heavy munitions dropping precisely on the targets that we wanted to hit. “And the message is clear to Iran as well: ‘Your support of the Houthis needs to end immediately. We will hold you accountable as the sponsor of this proxy.' This is not the Biden administration. We will come after the Houthis until they stop shooting in our ships and the Iranians better stay out of it.” The Trump administration has committed to retaliation against the Iran-backed Houthis until they stop disrupting trade in the Red Sea. Franklin Graham urges Zelenskyy to call for national day of prayer U.S. Evangelist Franklin Graham reached out to Ukrainian President  Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling for a day of prayer for the nation.  On X, Graham wrote, “I urged him to call for a national day of prayer at this critical time. I would encourage this not only for the people of Ukraine, but also for the people of Russia and around the world—that the church of Jesus Christ stand together in prayer for peace. So many lives have been lost. President Trump is right—this war must end. We need God's help.” Ukraine has accepted the United States's proposed 30-day ceasefire. So far, Russia has not agreed to the terms. Zelensky responded on X, stating that “We value Franklin Graham's voice and rely on his support.” Psalm 67:5-7 is our prayer for the nations: “Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. Then the Earth shall yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us. And all the ends of the Earth shall fear Him.” Tesla's value dropped 50% In business news, Tesla has lost half its value since the first of the year. Nasdaq down, Gold and Bitcoin up The Nasdaq Composite index has slipped to about where it was last June. Gold is up to $3,000 per ounce. That's a 36% increase over a year ago. And Bitcoin is up 22% over a year ago, at $84,000 per Bitcoin. Christian college women's basketball team victorious in truth and game And finally, a Christian college women's basketball team has won the Canadian league championship despite their opposition to transgenderism in sports.   Columbia Bible College of Abbotsford, British Columbia had forfeited games, endured harsh criticism, and received sanctions for refusing to countenance transgender players. Despite the blowback, the team beat St. Mary's University 77-70 to win its first national title. The team had protested a certain male basketball player, pretending to be a woman, by the name of Harriette Mackenzie, who was born Declan Mackenzie. The man had won MVP honors and all-Canadian awards in women's basketball.  Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, March 18th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
