In last Sunday's message, Pastor Gregg began the Living It Out message series, teaching us from James 2 about the royal law which commands that we love our neighbors as ourselves, treating all people with equal love and respect regardless of their status, wealth, or appearance. We should choose faith over favoritism and mercy over judgment; this is a better reflection of God's consistent love for all people.

Self care isn't just about lighting candles and wearing cozy socks. One terrific way to care for yourself, especially during the holidays is to set healthy boundaries. Vicki is here to help us do that! It's not always easy to distinguish between a 'hell yes' and a 'no' when it comes to invitations or requests. Vicki tells us how we can feel into our body to better guide decisions. Vicki talks about how we often make decisions from a place of fear, obligation and guilt. She helps us identify when we are acting from these emotions and how we can make choices that we don't later regret. For any of us with people pleasing tendencies, saying no can be super uncomfortable. Vicki helps us to decrease and manage our uncomfortable feelings. This starts with knowing how to politely decline an invitation. Vicki will give us a strategy for this that she calls, "a boundary sandwich." Noteworthy quotes from this episode: [25:54] "Boundaries are scary because first we don't know what we want... and then we feel like there's gonna be conflict." [24:41] “I believe that most of us pleasers white knuckle our way through boundaries and we hope that we really don't have to have a conversation with someone. We hope we can just kind of plop it out there and that person understands and takes it and says, ‘oh, yes, of course.' The thing that keeps us from speaking up is we are afraid of staying in the conversation.” Connect with Vicki Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100075839538976 Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/power.to.the.pleasers/ Website -  https://powertothepleasers.com Podcast - https://powertothepleasers.com/podcast/ Connect with Paige Bond Instagram: @paigebondcoaching Facebook: @paigebondcoaching Website: www.paigebond.com Paige Bond hosts the Stubborn Love podcast, is a Licensed Marriage Therapist, and is a Polyamory Relationship Coach. Lindsey and Jesse Maestas have an honest conversation about tithing, investments, saving, and the prosperity gospel with Catherine and David. So much of the knowledge that Lindsey and Jesse received and implemented about stewarding money as a Christian came from what they saw Catherine and David doing. The Maestas' talk about their choice to live small then so that they can live well now and how investing in real estate early on in their marriage set the path for their successful financial future.  They discuss how to be a good steward with a compassionate heart while also discerning how, when, and whom to give to. David and Lindsey hone in on how the prosperity gospel diminishes the weight of Christ's life and Jesse shares why and how our perspective of heavenly treasures should vastly outweigh the blessings and rewards we pursue on earth.

Living It Out with Pastor David Maestas

We often tend to give ourselves credit when it comes to living a faithful life to Jesus. But it is crucial to remember that there is not one thing that we have done in order to be saved. In today's episode, Pastor David Maestas shares on Ephesians 2:1-10 and reminds us that, while the Bible says that we only deserve wrath, we are instead being made into the likeness of God because of Christ's death on the cross. Do we take advantage of God's grace? Let's talk about it.  Follow along with Pastor David on Instagram @pastordavidmaestas. We would be so grateful if you would tell one or two friends or family members about the Living It Out podcast to continue sharing the Word of God with people around the world.

We continue in our mini-series from Ephesians 4 about “Living It Out” – this week we consider our work. How does the Gospel transform our occupations, from mundane daily tasks to our overall sense of vocation? Certainly, grace means we rely on the work Christ has done, yet it does not make our work unnecessary or meaningless. So why does our work so often feel like a curse, even as we yearn for it to be a joy? Why do so many of us look to our work to derive our sense of significance? How could God redeem it instead to be a joyful offering? Let's talk about God's design for our work. Discussion Questions Even the guy who is at the top of his game is hoping there's more than this. What is YOUR reaction to HIS reaction to his success? Does this temper your ambitions, hopes, and aspirations at all? What are those goals and aspirations? What work is not You want to work. You need to work. Do you agree with this? What are you trying to do in life? Where are the pinch points and holdbacks? Why aren't you hitting the marks you're going for, to a satisfying level? …or maybe you are hitting those marks and you think you've arrived? Is it time to stop and collect seashells? To what degree has your work - whatever you do to make life ‘go' most days of the week - become your identity? Is this a bad thing, a prison, or a problem? Do you accept all of this talk about identity as it relates to one's work, or do you have a hard time seeing it? Read Jeremiah 45:5 and talk about your own sense of ambition. Most atheists are operating from a world view that says all of life is meaningless and insignificant – from beginning to end. If you disagree with the atheists' position, then what is the purpose of life? Is that purpose unique to each individual to create or discover, or is there a purpose that is common to all of us? How does your work fit into this explanation; interwoven or unrelated? What work is Meaningful work has the potential to remake and rehumanize us. How so – in what sense? What's been your most satisfying season of work until now, or a completed project that you wish you could do again and again, despite all of the labor and toil? Was financial profit the goal and the win? The fruit of your work is meant to be shared with those in need. Did you resonate with this part of the sermon? How does this color or affect your line of work? Do you see a connection? So what In our verse, Paul knows there are thieves! Who is he talking about; pick-pockets and people stealing out of the offering? In what sense can any of us be one of these thieves? Is there a season or moment in your life when this verse was talking about you? Larry Stewart from Lee Summit, Missouri became a Secret Santa. Retell what you remember of his story and how it inspired you, specifically? We all know the sentiment to “pay it forward.” But how is the message here in our verse and sermon more than just a feel-good moment? How is any of this different and enduring for followers of Jesus? Gospel: God is in the dirt with you, making something out of nothing. Our work is an echo of what Jesus has done for us. The cross is the center-piece, which has given us immeasurable value; not only paying off our debt, but the cross empowers us to work now for others' gain. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Living It Out: Truth-ing

We begin a mini-series of successive topics Paul hits on "Living It Out." This week we look at truth - not just truth-telling, but the problem we have with living the truth out in our daily lives. Jeremiah said, "the heart is deceitful above all things" (17:9) - so how practically shall "you know the truth, and the truth shall set you free" (Jn.8:32)? Let's talk about how the Gospel transforms liars like me into people who joyfully live and share the Truth. Discussion Questions Where do we get the guts to tell the truth? Why do we easily lie at times while other times we're brutally honest and transparent – even magnanimous about how honest we are? Why the difference in behavior? “Don't lie” is not the point of this. So what is the point of this? Hiding Read Ephesians 4:25. This is the opposite of I can't be real with the world and I don't want the world to be real with me - to paraphrase Billy Joel. Why do we reject the intimacy that we desperately want? Can you share how this has played out in your life, in part or in whole? We keep others at a distance, surely. But we can also keep ourselves distant from ourselves. Why do we do this? (Jeremiah 17:9) When have you come to some self-realization and said, I'm kidding myself – everyone has seen this about me, but I've been avoiding it. How has this confession helped you bond more to others; more so than if you had kept lying to yourself? What were you trying to save? What were you losing? The fool says in their heart that there is no God. (Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1) This is not a punch at the atheist. Rather it's directed at those who live as if there's no God; especially theistic, religious people. When we live as functional atheists we are disconnected from God. Yet when we confess, we get closer to Him. Why? Recall what confession means. We can use truths to push away The Truth. How? What are examples of this? The Flip Grace has an agenda: to draw us out of our mess, see Him as He is, and be transformed into His likeness. (1 John 3:2; 2 Corinthians 3:17-18) How does God transform liars into truth-ers? What kind of truth-ing in your own life has to be from God – more than you just living up to ethical standards? The church is a model house where sinners are given a home to recover and be transformed under a covering of grace. It's a place to love people who do to us what we did to Jesus. What does compassion look like; not with the so-called poor and needy, but in common church relationships? Honesty We cope with the sight of ourselves by turning to lies, from sources that do not know us, nor reflect back to us honestly who we truly are. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and Jesus experienced the full range of humanity, yet did not sin. (Jeremiah 17:10, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Hebrews 4:15) He knows us better than our coping mechanisms and idols. How have you seen this raw change of direction towards God's loving honesty transform your life? Retell the story at the end of the sermon. How was the pastor freed? Have you ever been liberated like that? GOSPEL: Truth died a liar's death. We now can take in the ugly truth about ourselves; not by looking into a distorted funhouse mirror, but by accepting who we really are - an ugly mess. God is not out to destroy you but to restore you.
