Needless to say this was a difficult time for our town and a challenging time for me as both a parent of young children and a therapist for local children and families. I will share how EFT profoundly helped me in my own healing and management of anxiety. I will also share how it continues to help me in supporting my clients in counseling sessions and provides clients with an effective therapeutic tool they can use on their own.Check out Vicki Smith's fantastic podcast, Power to the Pleasers. In order for us to be effective leaders on the outside, we must be self-aware within. In a recent study of over half a million people, Travis Bradberry narrowed success down to one factor, self-awareness. Awareness is a vital skill to master in which your values, beliefs and behaviors have to be in alignment. Tasha Eurich illustrates the four ways all people embody this trait by examining their internal vs external loci of awareness. She breaks self-awareness down into four quadrants: seekers, introspectors, pleasers, and those who are aware. In this episode, Craig discerns how to understand which quadrant you fall underneath, as well as the key component to moving towards awareness: asking for feedback, one of the most inexpensive activities we can take on as leaders.  What You'll Learn: 1. The key trait in mastering your external presence as a leader 2. The definition of self-awareness 3. Internal vs external awareness 4. The four types of awareness 5. You know I (Shelby) once had a friend who told her at a party that she hated being her friend. Of course, she was drunk and maybe a little bit high...but, Shelby was taken aback by the comment nonetheless. But, when she asked why, her reply was even more astounding...You know what she said...?! I know you're on the edge of you'r seat or, perhaps, you're actually laughing that I even asked why. Her answer was that she is too perfect...Like what the hell, right? She said, you "have two kids, you're a single mom and...SOMEHOW...you always have your shit together! You look good and you always bake homemade cookies for the holiday parties and the staff and I just can't take it!" At first Shelby was angered by the comment. But, then thought, "well you know she's right?! Girl, perfectionism is Shelby's friggen best friend. She keep it all tight...maybe so tight that she doesn't get to experience the joy in the messiness of life. What do you think would happen if you just...let it go and forgave yourself for being Imperfect?" We dive into this question today with our guest, Vicki Smith. And, don't worry, we also get into Trinity's obsession with "fixing" everything! Because this is what often happens when we experience some kind of trauma. For Trinity, as a child, she had to fix all of the problems to ensure her people were safe under tumultuous circumstances and she still does that today. Shelby felt like being perfect was the only way to garner attention and affection from her ever-busy executive parents. She still feels like she has to hustle for love. But, Vicki teaches us that the internal narratives that show up as different parts of ourselves don't know that we've grown up and no longer need to be protected. Vicki is a psychotherapist and a coach who is in private practice for over 20 years as well as a mindfulness meditation teacher who has studies yoga and Buddhism. And, Shelby...take note, Vicki works with people pleasers and perfectionists as a specialty now and was trained in Internal Family Systems or IFS in 2012 and received it as a client before that to let go of the intense anger she felt towards her father, who she now suspects suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder. Because of the IFS approach, she separated herself from his toxicity and forgave him and healed herself. Vicki now uses these tools as foundational in the work she does with her clients. She created Power to the Pleasers in 2020 and her approach is to use the 8 Cs of Self-Leadership (which we discuss in this episode) to help the different parts within each of us know that they no longer need to so vigilantly protect us. People pleasers are usually pretty harsh with themselves and this approach helps them begin to treat themselves with more kindness and shift the pattern of self defeat. In this episode, Vicki teaches us:  We all have an "internal counsel" of different parts of ourselves that "govern" our life and keep us safe. The Managers are the first line of defense and how we show our selves to the outer world. The second line of defense are the protectors and the third are the firefighters (which includes any kind of addictive behavior used to take our nervous system way down. Ask our parts what they need from us and what would happen if they stopped protecting us...in truth, we may no longer need protecting, but our parts are unaware that we are no longer in danger. By asking them these questions, we can help our parts relax from their soldier post. when one part is alleviated of their duties, it allows more space for the Self (with a capital "S"). we can treat our parts like we would any close friend. we listen to them, we show them compassion we embrace them, because, in the end, we are really giving these things to ourselves, when we do. While we often look for the quick fix in our current society, working with all of your parts is a beautiful and gradual unfolding on learning new ways to approach life. You can find Vicki: website | https://www.powertothepleasers.com  Instagram | @power.to.the.pleasers/ Look girl....if you're out there and that inner voice inside your head is telling you that you're not enough...not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, thin enough...This episode is for you and know that you're not alone! We're all in the messy middle together and we got your back. I greet you in Jesus' precious Name. It is Sunday morning, the 16th of July 2023, and this is your friend Angus Buchan with a thought for today. We start in the first book of Thessalonians 2:4:"But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so, we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts."This morning, we need to ask ourselves the question: Are we men-pleasers, or are we God-pleasers? You know, if you look at the book of Revelation, the last book in the New Testament, 3:16, Jesus says: "So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth." The truth can make us very unpopular, but it's the truth alone which will stand at the end of the day. John 17:17 Jesus says:"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."Like never before, the world is looking for men and women who are prepared to speak the truth in love because with the truth comes healing. We can no longer sit on the fence; it is a very uncomfortable place to be, especially if it's a barbed wire fence! People need the truth spoken to them in love. Telling a white lie is unacceptable. Living together and not being married will not bring a blessing from the Lord Jesus Christ. The truth sets the captive free. Many years ago, I was preaching in London, England, at the famous City Temple just down the road from Saint Paul's Cathedral. I was not even speaking about marriage; I was talking about holiness. At the end of the service, as I was leaving, a young man with his girlfriend came up to me and said: "Sir, you cannot leave. You need to marry us first..." I said, "I have to catch a plane, young man." He said: "Sir, please do not leave without marrying us. We are not going home to that flat to live together out of Matrimony." So I came back into the church, the congregation came back into the church, and do you know that that night was one of the most amazing church services I have ever had? I married no less than 12 couples - 24 people. They were in their jeans and casual clothes, coming up weeping. They had no rings, and the congregation lent them Rings. The minister was running around, red-faced with marriage contracts, trying to keep everything in order. There was an old couple who said: "We are marriage counsellors. We will counsel them every single Wednesday night after that." It was one of the highlights of my life; why? Because we spoke the truth, people were convicted, and they started to live in a godly manner. Today, speak the truth and stand up for Jesus! Have a wonderful Sunday; God bless you, and goodbye.

It is natural to want to be friends with and seek approval from our peers, but how far is too far? In today's episode, the guys discuss how to stop being “men-pleasers.” The Bible shows us that there are two fears: the fear of men and the fear of God. If you live your entire life trying to please others, it's like continually trying to hit a moving target. People's expectations are always fleeting, and this will be a never-ending battle that will leave you exhausted and empty. Men are wicked and sinful, and our love for heroes is fragile. We see this reflected in the suicide rates of celebrities, who are so accustomed to pleasing men that when the favor of fans falls apart, they lose their identity and worth. It is impossible to please both man and God. Galatians 1:10 states, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” If we are trying to please men, we can't please God. All the satisfaction that you need has been placed on the cross. God knows, loves, and accepts you because He made you, and all the approval you need is from Him.  Next, the guys discuss a hypothetical situation where something could be pleasing to both men and God. In these cases, we should examine our motive. Pleasing the Lord should be the heartbeat of everything we do. Desiring the approval of men is also a form of worship, because worship is anything that we prioritize above God. Out of a desire to “fit in,” we become imitators of those around us, which exposes us to the danger of an identity crisis. If we try to be like other people in this fallen world, we become like a fallen creature ourselves, where pleasing people prevents us from accomplishing God's purpose for our life. We must choose to be who God made us to be, so we can glorify Him and share the gospel with others.  If the apostles in the Bible tried to please men instead of God, then they would not have been martyred for their faith. The guys discuss John F. Kennedy and John Lennon who were worshiped by the world. But when they lost their lives, the big question isn't how handsome or rich or famous they were, but were their sins forgiven? People-pleasing may be seen as a “respectable sin,” but it is still a sin that creeps up secretly, unannounced and unnoticed. To keep this sin in check, we must be proactive in overcoming it. The guys suggest praying preventative prayers multiple times a day, studying and memorizing scripture, and reading books. If you don't act to change something, then that's evidence that you don't really want to overcome it. When we recognize our weakness, it drives us to God. We are not to serve ourselves or our culture—we are commanded to keep the KingdomThanks for listening! In Coming to America, there's a scene where Eddie Murphy is about to marry his prescribed bride. Before the “I dos”, the groom wants to make sure the bride is a good fit. So, he whisks her “backstage” to ask some questions. She starts, “All of my life I have been trained to serve you.” He answers, “I know, But I'd like to know what you like.” She says, ‘Whatever you like.” “What kind of music do you like?” “Whatever kind of music you like.” As he points out that he knows she has been trained to like whatever he likes and do whatever he wants, he eventually has her barking like a dog. The scene is supposed to be funny, but it speaks of a deep seeded problem that many codependents face and that is the pattern of people pleasing. Pleasing others isn't inherently wrong. It's a wonderful thing to want to make others happy and comfortable. But then it falters into the land of self-sacrifice and self-betrayal in favor of others, it becomes a big problem. When you grow up in a dysfunctional family, one that is addicted, abusive, absent, narcissistic, etc, you take on a way f being in order to survive, thrive, connect or cope in that family. Especially, in a hustle to get love or at least not get hurt, you ask, “Who do I need to be?” And you become that. I call those Attachment Personality Patterns. It's programming that allows you to find a way to function in the dysfunction. One of the 8 patterns is that of the Pleaser. Pleasers are bred to make others happy and keep the peace. These aren't bad traits. But pleasers are in one-sided relationships where their behavior is not reciprocated. Pleasers become resentful and passive-aggressive. It's important to remember that Patterns aren't Pathology. You can change your patterning and become healthier , achieving balanced, mutually beneficial relationships. Here are the 5 core traits of a Pleaser Personality. Core Trait #1. Pleasers have unbalanced relationships. Pleasers give more than they receive. In an attempt to endear themselves to others, they say yes when meaning no. They tend to take on more than others and do not ask others to help. They feel that asking others to meet their needs will take them out of favor. Core Trait #2 Pleasers Have difficulty making decisions and overvalue the opinions of others. A pleaser will often need the input of others before committing to a path of action. They don't simply consider themselves when making decisions; they want to check with everyone else to make sure it's good for them too. If everyone else agrees that it is a good decision, then they'll likely do it, even if they are still unsure themselves. Core Trait #3. Pleasers will give up personal truths or desires to avoid rocking the boat or disapproval. They'll go with the flow to avoid confrontation. If a pleaser has an unpopular opinion, they will keep it to themselves. Core Trait #4 Pleasers feel overly responsible for the emotions of others and work hard to mitigate the feeling of others. Like the fixer, the Pleaser is empathy and the ability to feel others' emotions and have a sixth sense as to what others need. However, Fixers are not afraid to experience being out of rapport with another person if they believe it will help them. Meaning, a Fixer may call out a loved one to help them, whereas a Pleaser won't want to upset anyone. So, they are more likely to do what they can to ensure others feel good all the time (even at their own expense.) A Fixer can be a hero (actually helping save the day) whereas a Pleaser is more likely to be an Enabler to keep the peace. Core Trait #5 Pleasers are passive-aggressive. Because confrontation is not something a pleaser is willing to do, when the resentment from their unbalanced relationships builds,, they will behave in passive-aggressive ways to let the person know they are hurt without outright stating it. Like the withholder, they may withhold attention, affection, approval, etc. Triangulating (playing people against each other), playing the victim, or avoiding any interaction at all. So what's the path out of this behavior? Awareness is always the first step. Once you become aware, you open yourself up to having a choice. You can choose to get into codependency recovery and enable yourself to have the mutually beneficial, respectful relationships you deserve. Of course, we would love to have you join us in LYFE School. That's our codependency recovery program which is a step-by-step system to undo your patterning and find your true Self. Israel was baptized through the Red Sea. They sang a song of victory and rejoiced in the grace of God. But... most of those celebrating that day did not make it home to the promised land. Why not? Pride. They began to feel entitled, and that caused them to turn attention from God to themselves. Part of our episode today will investigate the  mistakes of Israel in I Corinthians 10. How can we be less like them, more dependent on God, and beautifully humble? We will also list 8 things from Kevin Deyoung's book, Crazy Busy. These words, all starting with the letter P (its a Letter P day!) represent more subtle ways that pride sneaks into our lives. Having sought humility in these things, you and I will be better positioned, at the foot of God's throne, to be more useful to Him."A Manifestation of the Many Manifestations of Pride" (pg 35-38)- People Pleasing- Pats on the Back- Performance Evaluation- Proving Myself- Possessions- Prestige- Pity- PostingOoh, I see some of my own pride in that list. But what does our year look like if we know where we need to be humble? If we ask the question: "is this about me? And if it was about God and others, how different would it look?" May the Lord, who has blessed us in His grace and Spirit and Son, use us well and give us a life of gratitude, thankfulness, and service.

Whether your kids have been out of school for almost a month, or you are just starting your summer, Tuesday is officially to the first day of summer. And with that, I want to make sure that you are thinking of how you can create some easy wins when it comes to meals and specifically dinners this summer. Because with our schedule, and I know with so many other family schedules, there are a million moving pieces in the summer. No matter how hard we try and establish a routine, things just don't feel as streamlined as they do during the school year. But with this, there's this flexibility and freedom in the summer. The sun is up later and whether your dinner time is the same time every day or gets pushed a little bit later, or you're eating outside, or the kids are playing in the yard while you're preparing dinner, there's this element that we want to enjoy dinner a little bit. But that doesn't take away the fact that dinner is still work. It's still a job to come up with the menu, to make sure we have the groceries, and to actually prepare the food. That's all in hopes someone will even eat it! So in this episode, I want to walk you through some really easy weeknight dinner ideas, using ingredients that you already have on hand using a seasonal menu. You can get my seasonal meal plan here for one that's been done for you. Or tune into this episode for my tips on how to come up with your own rotating meal plan that helps lessen mental fatigue, capitalize on crowd favorites for dinner, and expand on for added variety to ensure easy summer evenings all season long!
