Real joy and deep peace are not found in circumstances, possessions, or personality. Instead, they flow from trusting in Christ. Paul prayed that "the God of hope" will fill believers "with all joy and peace in believing." As we rest our complete confidence in the finished work of Christ, God Himself will pour joy into troubled hearts and peace into anxious minds. Faith is the channel, not the cause; God is the source, Christ is the ground, and the Holy Spirit the One who makes these blessings real in our experience, enabling us to "abound in hope" even in hard times.
Proverbs 23 reminds us that wisdom is not merely about outward behavior. Wisdom begins in the heart and shapes our desires, choices, priorities, and direction. Passing the "Laugh Test", means learning by Grace, that God's True People learn more and more of their sinfulness, as they grow older. By the time we get to this passage of scripture in the book of Habakkuk, we see a different prophet. He has been changed by his conversion with God. He is ready to submit his will to the will of God and is , in fact, able to praise God even though he realizes that he will suffer a tremendous amount when God's judgment actually arrives in his country. His prayer did not change God's decision, however, he was changed by his own prayer.
Throughout this sermon, Spurgeon complains that he is falling short of the subject which he has taken. I think other preachers, reading and responding to what he says, might long for such a failure as this! The text itself is a casket of pearls, and Spurgeon, after giving us a survey of them, urges us to ponder them more carefully for ourselves: "Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all my heart and with all my soul." Having considered some of what that means, perhaps the high point of the sermon then comes as Spurgeon considers the fact that this whole-hearted, whole-souled demonstration of practical love comes from the triune God, and is manifest in all the dealings of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Those paragraphs are worth soaking in! Finally, he offers consolation and exhortation to the people of God, as we consider God's heart toward us and examine our own hearts toward him. The whole closes with a heartfelt plea from the preacher for those who do not yet know God's love in this way to come to him and receive all that is held out. I would urge you to read the whole sermon. I am persuaded it will do much good to our souls.

Christians therefore face growing pressure to remain silent, adjust their convictions, or compromise the teaching of Scripture. Though the felt sense of assurance may be utterly withdrawn, and the believer, like a bruised reed, can discern nothing in themselves but smoke and darkness, the root of faith abides invisibly preserved beneath the soil. As the chief casuists of the church—from Goodwin and Owen to Sibbes and Ridgley—have tenderly demonstrated, the Spirit's supporting hand in the dark is rarely measured by sensible comfort, but by that holy, secret tenacity which causes the downcast soul, even in its deepest agonies, to cry out from the depths and cast itself upon the bare mercy of Christ. To mistakingly judge the absence of light as the absence of life is to misapprehend the subtle workings of grace; for where there remains even a groaning desire after God, a unwillingness to depart from Him, and a casting of the soul upon His bare promise, there Christ is secretly sustaining the smoking flax, guaranteeing that while a saint may walk in deep darkness, they shall never sink into utter ruin.
Music matters in the worship of God, because it has a real effect on the heart, mind, spirit, and character of those who hear it. The worship in God's house should be marked by order, unity, reverence, truth, and one sound of praise to the Lord, not by the disorder, emotionalism, worldliness, and entertainment spirit that has entered many churches through contemporary music. Not all music is appropriate or acceptable for worship, and we must judge both the words and the structure of the music by whether it honors Christ, promotes holiness - not just how it makes us feel. We must worship God in spirit and in truth, refuse to follow the current of this generation, and seek to honor the Lord with music that is holy, reverent, and pleasing in His sight. Worldly, fleshly music will not do, and is not acceptable to God.
