This week I've teamed up with Martha McKittrick to cover a very important topic, PCOS. Martha is a Registered Dietitian that has been specializing in working with PCOS for over 20 years. She's also a Certified Diabetes Educator which you'll hear in this episode why that's important for PCOS. She's been published in peer reviewed journals and lectures across the country on PCOS to both health professionals and patients. Martha is on the Health Advisory Board for the PCOS Challenge and advocates for PCOS annually on Capitol Hill. In this episode we cover the prevalence and health risks associated with PCOS and some of the difficulties in diagnosing it. Martha also goes into the medical, nutrition, and lifestyle treatments as well as some of the common misconceptions around PCOS. Martha, like many great practitioners, believes that nutrition strategies for PCOS are not a "one-size-fits-all” and she uses an evidence based and integrative approach to work with her clients to help manage their PCOS. She focuses on an approach that leverages nutrition, sleep, stress, physical activity, and supplements to tailor the appropriate program for her clients. Many people are told to lose weight to alleviate their PCOS symptoms. But what if you don't have any extra weight to lose? About 20–30% of people with PCOS are living with Lean PCOS, meaning their BMI does not qualify them as overweight or obese. They don't gain extra weight because of PCOS, so they have to address their issues and symptoms differently than the general PCOS population. Often following recommendations that are meant for the more common form of PCOS worsen symptoms for those with lean PCOS.    Meet Martha McKittrick. Martha is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator with over 25 years of experience. She has been specializing in PCOS for over 15 years. She has been published in peer-reviewed journals and was the nutrition editor for the book A Patient's Guide to PCOS - Understanding and Reversing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.   In this episode, I sit down with Martha to discuss Lean PCOS, how it's different from typical PCOS, and how people with Lean PCOS can find treatment for their symptoms.    This Week We Talk About:  How PCOS symptoms affect people with Lean PCOS differently than people in larger bodies What does the current lack of research mean for people with Lean PCOS? Other conditions that may be misdiagnosed as PCOS in lean people What do you do when you have no extra weight to lose?  What are the most common root causes of Lean PCOS? What PCOS dietitians do when recent scientific studies change what we think about PCOS Mentioned in this episode The PCOS Root Cause Roadmap - For the first time EVER I am hosting The PCOS Root Cause Roadmap LIVE! Usually, this program is a solo mission, but starting February 1st I'll be there to guide you through this journey. In Part 2 of our interview with Dr. Kubacky, we discuss how fatigue is a hallmark of PCOS and how a host of other health issues are associated such as diabetes, high cholesterol, infertility, and hypothyroidism.  We discuss how women tend to be diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and how some sleep physicians will recommend weight loss in place of using other interventions such as a CPAP.  The path for women to be diagnosed is often difficult based on how they sometime report fatigue, according to information by the organization Women's Health Research. This led into how women's health concerns are overlooked because their presenting symptoms don't fit the typical medical perspective taught in medical schools.  For instance, a typical viewpoint is that obese men have sleep apnea.  We know that slim women also have sleep apnea.  The health inequities women face is discussed in this episode as well as those faced by minorities.Dr. Kubacky provides wonderful resources for people experiencing PCOS.Her mental health website is: https://drgretchenkubacky.com/Her PCOS website: https://pcoswellness.com/Martha McKittrick: https://marthamckittricknutrition.com/nutrition-solutions-pcos/Society for Women's Health Research https://swhr.org/science/networks/sleep/
