Why do some people view winter as a magical season when others see it as something to dread? The secret is in the mindset, according to health psychologist Kari Leibowitz. She spent a year doing research in Tromsø, Norway studying how the people who live above the Arctic Circle celebrate deepest winter. What she discovered is that it goes beyond hygge. It depends on where your brain settles its focus. “Winter is many things. It's paradoxical,” says Leibowitz. “Yes, it's cold and dark, and it can be gloomy and depressing. But it can also be beautiful and quiet and cozy and magical. The mindset we have about winter helps us make sense of this paradox. Is winter wonderful or dreadful? Is the season a limiting time of year, or is it full of opportunity? Research shows us mindsets matter most in these ambiguous situations.”Leibowitz joins Kerri Miller this week on Big Books and Bold Ideas to explore how shifting your mindset about winter can be a useful life skill. She also tackles the question about who has the worst winter, and how the debate over Daylight Saving Time should be settled. Guest:Kari Leibowitz is an health psychologist, speaker and writer. Her debut book is “How to Winter.” Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.

THANK YOU Mary Catherine George for being my very FIRST guest in 2020 on On The Call, which began the same time as the pandemic. SINCE THEN, Dr. George has accomplished the following: 1) obtained grant dollars to develop a chronic pain relief tool using Virtual Reality 2) learned to make her creative endeavors a priority 3) Health is key to longevity, and so has prioritized her health, mind, body, and soul each day. “The Pandemic taught me a lot, and I feel even more committed to serving others when it comes to learning how to be our biggest expression of who we are.” Cathy saw co-workers dealing with the difficulty of maintaining their mental health; the duplicity of making efforts to return to work, hearing colleagues share about the issues of work and health safety due to the vaccine mandate and the shifting decisions. Cathy strongly believes in autonomy, yet she knows that only 12% of adults understand their health no matter what their background or education. The percentages decrease as individuals are older and have more complicated health issues. Cathy is a Health Psychologist, IRB Regulatory Specialist and Research Program Manager, working for decades within the neurological complications of HIV Disease, Post-Stroke Spasticity, and other research initiatives involving pain and behavior, with an interest in human behavior and how to address wellness and maintain health throughout their lifespan. Her areas of research interest involve stress, anxiety, pain management, and aging within the context of chronic illness such as HIV disease. Dr. George has a special interest in language, technology (use of virtual reality and apps) and how language can influence behavior. Cathy, also a musician, is a comedian as well. No generation struggles with mental health more than Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012. Only 41% of Gen Z respondents said they're "thriving" in a Gallup and Walton Family Foundation poll released earlier this year and reported by CNN, but 60% of millennials surveyed said they were thriving when asked at the same age. When questioned about their mental health and well-being, only 20 in every 100 Gen Zers say it is excellent. Clinical psychologist Chloe Carmichael says Gen Zers' mental health issues likely stem from multiple factors, such as “false social standards that social media creates [and] the stifling of free speech."About the latter, Carmichael says that "as a clinical psychologist, I believe freedom of expression and being able to verbalize your thoughts is really good for your mental health.” The psychologist also points to “a decline in religiosity” among the young generation as a reason for growing depression and anxiety, as well as the extended period of social distancing and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Carmichael joins this episode of “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the factors that led to today's mental health crisis and what can be done to address such underlying causes. And with Christmas around the corner, Carmichael also offers some tips and tricks for how we all can navigate family and challenging relational dynamics over the holidays. Enjoy the show! Progress not Perfection. That mantra has stuck with our speaker Nina through several years working with patients on their bariatric surgery journey as it helps them define what their markers of “success” and “progress” really are. Defining success is highly personal, and not all about a number on the scale! As you look beyond the scale, it is important to have other outcome measures to show progress. Body composition has been a transformative tool to examine what's going on inside the body as someone loses weight and then works to maintain that significant weight loss. IT'S TIME TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT KID SCREEN TIME The warnings have been out there for years, but now a very long term study that started in the 1970s shows a pretty definitive connection between kids who spend too much time watching tv and not playing or doing something active and adulthood obesity. The study started in 1973 and followed the kids until they were 45 years old and found this:Children and teenagers who spent more time watching television had less efficient oxygen use during exercise, higher blood pressure, and higher rates of obesity in mid-adulthood, even when accounting for sex, childhood body mass index and the family's economic situation, the study published in Pediatrics says. Now think about how much MORE time kids spend on screen NOW compared to the seventies and we've got a situation brewing. I'm talking to Health Psychologist Dr. Catherine Athans, who holds Doctorate Degrees in both Clinical and Health Psychology and is author of numerous books, including The Heart Brain, which details how stress, anxiety and worry can put you at an increased risk for disease, and offers stress relief solutions. How many people would say they're good people? Sure, maybe at first glance. But how do they determine this? Typically, they think they're good because they are not raping or murdering or selling their bodies for meth. But that's all the bare minimum. That's just expected. Our collective perspective of morality is so skewed that we've lost so much of the fabric that makes life truly great. Highlights are in the episode, so check it out. Probably the most well-known of the menopausal symptoms, the hot flush has provided endless material for humourists over the years but it's no fun when it's happening to you. It can cause huge distress, especially in a professional or social situation or if it's persistently disrupting your sleep. But help is at hand in this episode with this month's guest who is just the woman we need to provide us with some practical flush-busting strategies.I'm delighted to introduce the brilliant Dr Melanie Smith – she's a clinical health psychologist who played a key role, along with Professor Myra Hunter, in developing and facilitating the first cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT as it's often known, for menopause groups as part of an innovative research trial. This research demonstrates that CBT is a valid and effective non-medical approach to managing menopause symptoms and Melanie is here today to explain to us what a huge difference it can make to dealing with hot flushes. We discuss what hot flushes are and why they happen. Melanie explains what CBT is and why a psychological approach can help to tackle something that seems to be such a physical problem. We explore the role of stress in triggering and exacerbating hot flushes and Melanie shares some practical strategies to help you combat them. If you enjoy this episode, please tell your friends and family, and leave a 5-star rating and a review on Apple Podcasts or whichever platform you listen on, as it really helps to spread the word, so that new listeners can find the show. Because every woman deserves to have a happy menopause.
