Delaying Insulin Therapy Raises Risk of Diabetes Complications

Dr. Sunil Gupta highlighted that insulin remains the most effective and life-saving treatment for diabetes, especially when oral medications fail. He explained that many people with Type 2 diabetes eventually require insulin, and delaying its initiation can lead to serious complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, kidney disease, heart disease and diabetic foot problems. Addressing common fears, he clarified that modern insulin pens are almost painless and newer insulin analogues closely mimic natural insulin action, significantly reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia, particularly at night. He stressed the importance of regular blood sugar monitoring, HbA1c testing and annual health check-ups after 30 years of age, noting that many individuals with diabetes may remain asymptomatic. He also drew attention to insulin-requiring diabetes in undernourished adults in India and the need for timely specialist referral. Kavita Gupta emphasized healthy dietary practices, explaining why whole fruits are better than fruit juices due to fiber and lower glycaemic index. She advised consuming low-GI foods and shared practical tips to prevent hypoglycaemia through timely meals and planned nutrition, especially for children, the elderly, and physically active individuals. We last connected in October 2020 for Episode 121.  Dr. Fung is a nephrologist and a prominent figure in the intermittent fasting and low-carb space. He has made significant contributions as a founding member of The Fasting Method, providing evidence-based guidance on weight loss and blood glucose management through low-carb diets and intermittent fasting. He has written several books, including The Obesity Code, The Complete Guide to Fasting, The Diabetes Code, and The Cancer Code.  In our discussion today, we look at the forecast for metabolic health in 2024, exploring how the growth of the diabetes population relates to the effects of the pandemic and addressing the conflict of interest with organizations like the ADA and registered dieticians. Dr. Fung shares some of his biggest frustrations, including the shallow and myopic thinking amongst those focusing on calories in and calories out, and we get into various facets of metabolic health, from the nuanced influences of gender, puberty, perimenopause, and menopause to hedonistic eating, sarcopenia, bio-individuality, and therapeutic fasting. Dr. Fung also shares his perspective on GLP-1s, shiftwork, supplements, and more. Join us for valuable insights on various aspects of metabolic health and how they impact our well-being. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN How the influence of food companies has led dieticians and diabetes associations to focus on moderation instead of a balanced diet Dr. Fung shares his frustration with the lack of progress in addressing the diabetes issue How hormones impact weight gain and hunger Why does focusing on calories in and out not provide the solution to weight loss? On this episode, Jared and Jen break down one of the most misunderstood hormone issues affecting both women and men: estrogen dominance. This isn't always about having “too much estrogen”—it's about a ratio problem, driven largely by low or depleted progesterone. You'll learn how estrogen is metabolized through different liver pathways, why some forms of estrogen are far more disruptive than others, and how liver health, gut function, stress, blood sugar, and environmental exposures all shape hormone balance. The episode also explores how estrogen dominance shows up differently in women and men, why symptoms often persist even when labs look “normal,” and how modern lifestyle factors quietly stack the deck against hormonal health.Jared and Jen also take an honest look at hormonal birth control, endocrine disruptors, seed oils, and genetic factors that can impair estrogen clearance—without fear-mongering or oversimplification. The episode closes with a clear, practical framework for supporting estrogen metabolism, restoring progesterone balance, and addressing the root causes naturally.Products:LiverVitalityEndoCleanseBack on TractVital D3/K2Ultimate Vitality MultiActive B ComplexMagnesium BisglycinateAdditional Information:#588: The Hidden Epidemic Part 1: How Endocrine Disruptors Are Hijacking Your Health#589: The Hidden Epidemic Part 2: The Complete Endocrine Detox Strategy#595: The Estrobolome Explained: How Your Gut Shapes Your HormonesCheck out all five“Jen's Story” Episodes!Dirty Genes - Book by Dr. Ben LynchVisit the podcast website here: VitalityRadio.comYou can follow @vitalitynutritionbountiful and @vitalityradio on Instagram, or Vitality Radio and Vitality Nutrition on Facebook. Insulin resistance isn't just about carbs, sugar, or calories—and if you're doing “everything right” but still struggling with weight loss, fatigue, or blood sugar issues, this episode explains why. In this episode of The Health Revival Show, Liz and Becca break down 9 core contributors to insulin resistance that almost no one is testing for: nutrient deficiencies, liver dysfunction, chronic stress, mitochondrial burnout, estrogen dominance, potassium depletion, mold and mycotoxins, circadian rhythm disruption, and leaky gut–driven inflammation. You'll learn how insulin resistance actually develops, why fasting and under-eating often make it worse, and how blood sugar issues are deeply connected to your liver, hormones, immune system, and cellular energy—not willpower. If weight loss feels impossible, your labs “look normal,” or you're stuck in fatigue, cravings, or stubborn inflammation, this episode will change how you look at metabolic health. *** CONNECT:

Lindsay shares her journey into integrative, root-cause metabolic care and the mission behind Venn Integrative Medicine, her multi-state telehealth practice.Together, John and Lindsay unpack the science and real-world implications of insulin resistance—what it is, why it's so widespread, and how it drives a long list of symptoms and chronic conditions. Lindsay explains how IR develops, why it's often not your fault, and how conventional dietary guidelines contributed to the modern metabolic crisis. They also explore why insulin resistance shows up differently in women's health, influencing everything from PCOS and fertility to the hormonal transitions of perimenopause and menopause. Lindsay breaks down the key labs and biomarkers she evaluates in clinical practice (A1C, fasting insulin, glucose patterns, hormone profiles) and why fasting glucose alone is not enough to assess metabolic health. The episode wraps with a grounded discussion of GLP-1 medications—their potential role, their limitations and concerns, and how people can boost their own GLP-1 production naturally with low-carb/keto nutrition, specific supplements, and  lifestyle strategies. If you want a clear, compassionate, clinically grounded explanation of insulin resistance—and why women are uniquely affected—this is an episode you won't want to miss.

Nationally recognized psychiatrist, internist, and addiction medicine specialist Muhamad Aly Rifai discusses his article, "How insulin resistance may cause Alzheimer's disease." Muhamad introduces the paradigm-shifting concept of Alzheimer's as "Type 3 diabetes," arguing that insulin resistance in the brain is the root cause. He explains how this metabolic dysfunction starves neurons (especially in the memory-critical hippocampus), leading to the toxic beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles associated with cognitive decline. Muhamad highlights the crucial link between diabetes and Alzheimer's risk and discusses breakthrough diagnostic tools (like new blood tests) that can identify the disease before memory loss begins. Discover the practical lifestyle and medical interventions (from diet to new diabetes medications) that may prevent, manage, or even reverse cognitive decline by treating its metabolic underpinnings. We had a lot of fun recording this episode because he's as intensely nerdy about salt as we are about birth and motherhood. We question how salt ended up cast as the villain and what that fear has quietly done inside us, especially when studies and headlines ignored context like water and overall diet. We open up the tension between the mineral-rich salt and spring water humans adapted to and the stripped, “dead” versions most people are leaning on today. Instead of handing you another protocol, we stay focused on how it actually feels when you give your body enough of what it runs on and stop fighting its design. You'll Learn:[00:00:00] Introduction[00:06:09] How ancient civilizations survived and thrived around salt deposits[00:11:52] The clever way our ancestors found salt and water[00:17:17] The fascinating science of salt crystal size and why it changes how salty food tastes on your tongue[00:20:30] The biblical origins of "kosher salt" and why it's called that (it has nothing to do with being blessed)[00:26:31] The 1954 mouse study that demonized salt[00:32:17] The shocking truth: consuming less than 2,300mg of sodium resulted in a 430% increase in heart attacks[00:34:19] The Brewer's Diet approach to preventing preeclampsia with unrestricted salt, protein, and water[00:40:16] What "dead water" is and why spring water contains the full electrolyte profile our bodies expect[00:47:32] The bottle experiment that proves RO water is aggressively trying to dissolve everything it touches[00:52:30] Drinking demineralized water makes your body pull minerals from your jawbone and teeth[01:03:05] The heavy metals question: understanding parts per billion versus actual micrograms consumed[01:13:04] How to evaluate ANY product with three simple questions about producer, source, and processingResources Mentioned:Find A Spring | WebsiteWater & Salt, the Essence of Life by Barbara Hendel and Peter Ferreira | BookFDA Total Diet Study | ArticleFind more from Darryl Bosshardt by following him on LinkedIn.Find more from Dr. Leah:Dr. Leah Gordon | InstagramDr. Leah Gordon | WebsiteWomanhood Wellness | WebsiteFind more from Dr. Morgan:Dr. Morgan MacDermott | InstagramDr. Morgan MacDermott | WebsiteUse code HEALTHYMOTHER and save 15% at RedmondFor 20% off your first order at Needed, use code HEALTHYMOTHERSave $260 at Lumebox, use code HEALTHYASAMOTHER

In this foundational episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling explore why fasting insulin may be the most critical yet overlooked health metric for preventing chronic disease and achieving lasting weight loss. They break down insulin's essential roles throughout the body—from brain health and bone growth to muscle building and hormone production—while explaining how insulin resistance silently develops years before diabetes diagnosis. The hosts reveal why standard medical testing focuses on downstream markers like fasting glucose and A1C instead of measuring insulin directly, and they provide practical guidance on how to order your own fasting insulin test for as little as $20. They discuss optimal insulin ranges based on leading researchers, explain the HOMA-IR calculation for assessing insulin resistance, and deliver actionable strategies including time-restricted eating, protein prioritization, zone two exercise, and stress management. This episode empowers you to become your own health advocate by understanding and optimizing this upstream marker that connects to eight of the top ten causes of mortality. Take the NEW FASTING PERSONA QUIZ! - The Key to Unlocking Sustainable Weight Loss With Fasting! Resources and Downloads: SIGN UP FOR THE DROP OF THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL GRAB THE OPTIMAL RANGES FOR LAB WORK HERE! - NEW RESOURCE! FREE RESOURCE - DOWNLOAD THE NEW BLUEPRINT TO FASTING FOR FAT LOSS! SLEEP GUIDE DIRECT DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD THE FASTING TRANSFORMATION JOURNAL HERE! Partner Links: Get your FREE BOX OF LMNT hydration support for the perfect electrolyte balance for your fasting lifestyle with your first purchase here! Get 25% off a Keto-Mojo blood glucose and ketone monitor (discount shown at checkout)! Click here! Our Community: Let's continue the conversation. Why Modern Medicine Keeps You Sick: A Doctor's Wake-Up Call About Healthcare and Money - Dr. Ahmad Ammous

Dr. Ahmad Ammous completed medical school expecting to heal people. Instead, he found a system designed to keep patients dependent on expensive drugs and procedures. In this conversation with Dr. Philip Ovadia, he traces the roots of our broken healthcare system back to 1910's Flexner Report and the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913—showing how centralized financial power shaped modern medicine into a profit-driven enterprise rather than a healing practice.A first-year medical student when he switched to a meat-focused diet, Ammous experienced immediate relief from depression and anxiety that standard care never addressed. This personal transformation led him to question everything: why do patients with rheumatoid arthritis see only 20-30% improvement after 15 years of "standard treatment"? Why are hospitals increasingly chaotic disaster zones? Why can't physicians practice independently anymore? The answers lie in understanding how artificial scarcity in medical education, massive student debt, and inflationary monetary policy have consolidated healthcare into massive institutions dependent on government funding and pharmaceutical company influence. Ammous argues that physicians must become entrepreneurs again, building decentralized practices outside the failing system—and that Bitcoin represents the financial foundation needed to break free from centralized control. He also introduces quantum biology and the role of melanin in cellular energy production, explaining why modern indoor living under artificial light may be contributing to chronic disease. The path forward combines ancestral healing wisdom with modern scientific understanding, practiced in ways that actually serve patients rather than institutional profits. This conversation offers both critique and hope—a roadmap for physicians ready to exit a collapsing system and patients seeking genuine healing rather than symptom management.BIG IDEA"I understood how the medical system doesn't really benefit from getting people healthy—it benefits from keeping them sick and dependent on the system, selling them expensive drugs and surgeries."Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message.
