Understanding PCOS Root Causes: A Comprehensive OverviewIn this episode, we're tackling the topic of understanding the root causes of PCOS. I've received numerous questions about how to identify the specific root causes of PCOS, especially when the symptoms and indicators can often seem contradictory or confusing. Today, we're setting the stage for a series of discussions of each root cause in detail, providing clarity and actionable insights.Decoding the Complexity of PCOSPCOS is a complex syndrome that manifests differently in everyone, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. In today's conversation, we'll explore the pyramid model of PCOS symptoms and root causes. Imagine a pyramid where the tip represents the visible symptoms of PCOS, like irregular periods and metabolic challenges. As we move down the pyramid, we uncover the layers of underlying issues drilling down to the foundational cause.Cortisol and Stress: Triggers of PCOSA key player at the base of our pyramid is cortisol, the stress hormone. Stress isn't just about feeling overwhelmed; it's about how your body perceives and reacts to various stressors. Excessive cortisol can lead to an increase in androgens, escalating PCOS symptoms. The Insulin Connection: More Than Just SugarMoving up the pyramid, insulin resistance plays a significant role in PCOS. It's not just about sugar intake; it's about how insulin, when imbalanced, prompts the ovaries to produce excess androgens. We'll unpack the nuances of insulin management and its critical role in PCOS, emphasizing that insulin issues can arise even without overt diabetes symptoms.Inflammation: The Silent AggravatorInflammation is another critical layer. Often overlooked, chronic inflammation can be fueled by stress, poor sleep, and dietary choices. It's a vicious cycle where inflammation leads to more insulin resistance and vice versa, exacerbating PCOS symptoms. Understanding and reducing inflammation can be a game-changer in managing PCOS.Navigating Complex PCOS ScenariosFor many, the confusion doesn't stem from a single cause but a combination of factors. We'll explore scenarios where multiple root causes interact, such as post-birth control, where hormones and nutrition are thrown off balance, leading to a chaotic state. Identifying your primary root cause is akin to balancing a three-legged stool, ensuring no one cause is disproportionately affecting your health.Engage with Us: Your PCOS Journey MattersThis episode is just the beginning of our journey into the root causes of PCOS. Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes, where we'll dive deeper into each cause, offering detailed insights and practical advice. As some of you may know, September is PCOS Awareness Month. So, before we move into October, I want to wrap this month up with a replay of one of my favourite interviews with registered nutritional therapist, Megan Hallett. I'll leave the old intro in as it gives you a dive into Megan and her work, but one of the reasons why I wanted to share this episode is because we've been talking a lot about blood sugar on the show lately and in this episode, Megan shares how to eat for blood sugar balance if you're fully plant-based, as it can take a little extra work for some of people and Megan wrote an entire cookbook dedicated to this topic. Megan Hallett is the co-author of The Happy Balance, which she wrote with period expert Nicole Jardim. I absolutely love this book and recommend it to everyone. The cookbook not only gives us an awesome quick stop tour of our hormones and why health foundations like sleep and stable blood sugar are so crucial, but it also includes 60 beautifully nourishing, hormone feeding and blood sugar balancing plant-based recipes. Megan is a certified Integrative Nutrition Coach, is studying at CNM to become a Nutritional Therapist and is also a food writer and recipe developer. As you can tell from the length of this interviewed, I LOVED talking to Megan and ended up getting really specific with her about the ins and outs of balancing our hormones. In this episode, we talk about her experience with PCOS, managing PCOS with blood sugar balancing, what blood sugar balance actually is and why it's important for endometriosis and so much more, as you'll come to hear! Megan's book is available on Amazon and wherever good books are sold - and right here! True or False: the only issue PCOS causes is problems with fertility. Not sure? Listen up—it's PCOS Awareness Month, and Ruby and Anne are delivering a special episode to provide additional information about this common but little-known disease. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) may occur in as much as 8-12 percent (or more!) of women between 18 and 44. While it is often dismissed as "only a problem for fertility," the truth is, it can factor in many other issues people with PCOS need to be aware of, including diabetes and heart disease. Often those with PCOS go years without a diagnosis for the symptoms they're experiencing. If you're dealing with PCOS or think you might be, please have a listen to learn more. Additionally, if you know someone who could benefit from this episode, please share it. The sooner someone gets the correct diagnosis, the sooner they can learn to manage their health.
