The Creators, a four man doo wop group from Bayonne, NJ, put Mary Ann Thomas upfront, cut a demo of this song, which they then brought to Lieber and Stoller - and the rest is history: The Boy from NYC was cool. And I, because I came from NYC, I was cool by association. I didn't own a mohair suit, hell, I didn't even know what mohair was, but that sounded cool, too. And, don't forget the pocket full of spendin' loot, and the finest penthouse she'd ever seen in town. This was a notion of sexual chemistry to which a geeky 12 year old could aspire. I wasn't the only one: Brian Wilson was so inspired, he wrote the GIRL from NYC, and cribbed the Creator's back up rhythm for Good Vibrations. “Oowah, oowah, c'mon Kitty": Not too bad for a cool ass ditty.

Hear stories from cyclists from across the gender spectrum share experiences with cycling and the outdoors. We talk about how people show up in the FTWN-B cycling community and what we can do to create more gender inclusive spaces. For today’s episode we spoke with poet Kai Konradi, Mary Ann Thomas, Jessi Harris, Alex Villalba, Tez De La Tierra, Alley/Ramon Reyes, Lydia Moore and RAR Gravel Team dad Izzy Sederbaum. For more conversations on the boundless expanse of gender, check out the Gender Reveal Podcast with Tuck Woodstock. Music for this episode was made by the Band Your Heart Breaks and our logo design is by Molly Sugar. This series is hosted by Rio Oxas of RAHOK and Everett Ó Cillín, former co-founder of the Radical Adventure Riders, and was produced and edited by Everett. This episode was made possible through the support of our friends at Swift Industries. Based in Seattle, Washington, Swift makes quality handcrafted bicycle bags for every adventure. We got to spend some time with Swift co-founder and head honcho Martina Brimmer at the 2020 RAR Gravel camp last year, and her joy and enthusiasm for cycling has been a source of encouragement from the very beginning. Thanks Swift, we’ll see you on the trail. SERIES DESCRIPTION Radical Adventure Riders (RAR) and Race.Ancestors.Health.Outdoors.Knowledge (RAHOK) present the Within & Without podcast. A series of off the chain dispatches from BIPoC and Allies discussing tensions within the cycling community and how we connect to ourselves and the world around us through cycling and the outdoors. Recorded throughout 2020 amidst a global pandemic and racial reckoning, this series shares the lived experiences of our moment. These conversations help move us toward transformation:a transformation that centers the freedom and justice of our earth, amplifies voices from across the gender spectrum, and centers Black, Indigenous and People of Color. We acknowledge the energy of discomfort these conversations may bring and hope this very energy will help shift the greater dialogue to support the changes needed in outdoor and cycling communities - and our world.
Mary Lytle (she/they) is the co-founder of Radical Adventure Riders (RAR), a queer cat mom, visual artist, organizer, and adventure cyclist based in Portland, OR. She is passionate about using her skills as an illustrator to represent and connect cycling communities. Mary's desire to connect the community around bicycles stems from their days of running a small hot dog stand on the Little Miami Bike Trail in Loveland, Ohio and feeding the cyclocross community at regional events. While design is Mary's main gig, she enjoys working part-time for small independent brands that focus on creative design in the cycling industry. She currently works for SIM Works USA. On her days off, she loves to fuel herself with vegan snacks while meandering dirt roads in the PNW with friends. Founded in 2017, Radical Adventure Riders (RAR) mission is moving towards enhancing gender inclusivity and racial equity in the bicycle and outdoor adventure scene. RAR does this by providing connection, education, resources, and support for the community and industry. The community is always changing. We want to hear from them and grow with them, and we're ready for feedback. We still have a lot of work to do to represent more gender identities and lift up more BIPOC voices. So we want to see what comes next, and what else is needed in the community, as we move forward.” --Follow RAR: Instagram --Follow Mary: @maryroselytle @maryroselytleart –Follow Social Sport: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter –Subscribe to the Social Sport Newsletter --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/socialsport/support
If you menstruate (and honestly, even if you don’t), it’s likely that periods are one of many factors that come into play when you’re looking to head outside. In fact, we know that’s the case-- because we recently asked the She Explores community to tell us what questions or topics they thought about when it came to navigating menstruation in the outdoors, and everyone really came through with ideas, questions, and longstanding myths they wanted to hear busted. We were hoping to find a way to meet this community enthusiasm with thoughts from someone who knows both the medical and the practical aspects of taking your period outdoors. Mary Ann Thomas, a current ICU nurse and former travel nurse, bike tourist, and a queer brown daughter of Indian immigrant parents comes to this conversation with both knowledge and applied know-how to share. I don’t love packing or unpacking. But I love the in-between movement, the actual act of moving your body from one place to another. In this episode that touches on my drive from LA to NYC, we find a celebration of motion, movement, moving, migration, and all that comes along with it. In this episode we talk to writer, long-distance cyclist, and travel nurse, Mary Ann Thomas, a queer brown daughter of Indian immigrants, about home, home in migration, and home in movement. "As a brown woman, I stand out," says Mary Ann Thomas. "People came up to me just because they were curious, just because they were like, 'There aren't a lot of strangers here, we're just interested in who you are as a person-- as a whole person.'" Mary Ann is the daughter of Indian immigrants, she's queer and she had always lived in the liberal bubble of big cities on the East Coast. When she embarked on a six-month, 6600-mile bike tour across the country, she worried most about the prejudice she might encounter as she pedaled through middle America. She was surprised to discover that the stereotypes she had to confront in a profound way were her own. Check out the blog from Mary Ann's trip, or find more of her writing here.
