I have refined and I'll explain that. But I had stepped down from Anthem and I was asked to write an article about what it was like to be running this gigantic enterprise and then suddenly go be doing startups and all other kinds of things, wilderness hiking and all kinds of things. And I wrote the title of the article, and ended up being in search of a phase name because I felt that at that time I didn't have the word yet. But I said, you know, I don't see anybody retired in the industrial age concept. The concept was you work, you retire and then you die about three or four years later, but you have a few years there. Well, it's not that way anymore. First of all, we live a lot longer. And so we're essentially increasingly changing careers or changing our direction in life in in midlife, almost midlife or at the two-thirds point. You're not down within the 10 yard line. And so it's really changed. And so it does need a new definition. And so it hit me a few years ago about when I was writing the first book, the word refinement and to me, Joe,

“I will do my best to be my best and leave the world and the people I meet a little better than when I found them.”   These twenty-five words, said from the heart, represent nature's highest calling to all living things: to reach their potential and contribute to their species and the whole . . .   All it takes is this commitment to do your best to be your best – days, serial entrepreneur Ben Lytle, author of THE PURSUIT OF WISDOM, as that's how he led and launched seven successful companies to date, creating billions in market value, including New York Stock Exchange-listed Acordia, Inc. and Anthem (now Elevance Health), which have a current market value of more than $120 billion. He also co-founded Silver Sneakers, a fitness program designed for older adults that became one of the world's largest exercise programs.   Sharing his knowledge now as an author of THE POTENTIALIST series, his latest installment, The Pursuit of Wisdom was published Fall of 2024. He shares the importance of wisdom and its practice in everything from business to intimacy in relationships. The series is intended as a guidebook for success during the fast-changing, turbulent, and opportunity-rich times ahead—named The Fourth Industrial Revolution by the World Economic Forum.   Ben's devotion to individual and collective human potential through accelerated wisdom guides much of his work and sharing.   Among many nuggets, Ben Lytle shares about leadership, human potential, and wisdom from THE POTENTIALIST: The Pursuit of Wisdom                                                                     Human potential has consistently been underestimated. Humanity, especially its leaders, has yet to grasp this timeless truth.                                         How can I be sure that my intentions are genuine and my actions are consistent?                     Gratitude is powerful in its presence or absence.   If you struggle with judging yourself, you are trapped in the ego's cognitive distortion of perfection, which does not exist in nature and cannot exist in you.   Inside everyone, buried more deeply in some, lies a craving for an ecstatic connection called intimacy that unites us with others and all things in nature.   Humanity will achieve an unprecedented elevation in potential and wisdom when intimate relationships are as familiar as social acquaintances are today.   Intimacy, unconditional love, and empathy are not subject to the law of consumption but to infinity, from which they are derived. The more we give, the more we have available to offer.   Intimacy may be the most potent force we experience in life.                                           Think of intimacy as a healthy contagion spreading outward and altering every person and thing you touch.   Intimacy is the North Star of the art of living well, our most basic need, our highest calling, and the surest path to potential and wisdom.   Fear owns you, or you own it. Only you can decide who's in charge.   Adversity is a teacher, not a punishing warden.   What we spend time with and where we spend our time makes who we are. Decisions made wisely throughout life accelerate potential and wisdom.   At family intimacy, unconditional love and belonging are, at their best, protective membranes between you and the rest of the world from birth to death.   It is impossible to become wise without gratitude.   Many people remain tragically defined by inaccurate memories that limit their potential and quality of life.                                                      Questions to ponder:   • Will working and living with humanlike automation emphasize or blur my human distinctiveness?   • How do I integrate with automation like AI and robotics without losing my humanity?    • What security, backup, and controls should I insist on as my life increasingly depends upon more intelligent and competent automation?   • How do I prepare for career opportunities as automation assumes the grunt work and frees me for higher-value work that is creative, problem-solving, and involves complex relationships with humans and humanlike automation?   If institutions continue faltering, how, when, and on what matters will you fill the void they leave, protect your interests, and participate in reshaping them?   Will you lead wisely to heal polarizing issues in your orbit, or stay silent and hope someone else leads?   Will you develop and execute an adaptive strategy for a longer life in an aging society, or will you trust that the government or someone else will take care of you and yours?   How will my loved ones and I assess the choices and consequences to make the wisest possible decisions in a personalized world of expanding choices, individual initiative and productivity, and self-discovery?                                                                                   Active Imagination or visualize-to-realize is concentrated practice to learn and become what we imagine or visualize.   We can be only what we imagine, and what we imagine, we can exceed.   All-time problems are priority problems in disguise.   Everyone can contribute to democratizing wisdom by passing on their life experience as examples of wise and unwise actions and decisions.   The development of potential and wisdom becomes cumulative, accelerating you forward in an ecstatic experience of perpetual growth.   Ben Lytle is a self-made serial entrepreneur-CEO known for being ahead of the curve. He launched five successful companies, including two listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The best-known is Anthem, which is today twenty-ninth on the Fortune 500 with a market value of over $100 billion. He is a healthcare policy expert who served on state and presidential healthcare commissions, a governance leader with extensive public company experience, a senior athlete, a world traveler, a father of three children, and a grandfather to eight grandchildren. Ben's devotion to individual and collective human potential through accelerated wisdom guides his writing, speaking, entrepreneurial energy, and investments. He believes that people and organizations today underestimate the extent and speed with which they and the world will change. Time to prepare and adapt is being compressed, opportunities are missed, and unnecessary suffering will result unless prompt action is taken. He wrote The Potential: Your Future in the New Reality of the Next Thirty Years as a guide to success through wiser, timely actions and decisions in the opportunity-rich, turbulent times ahead. In the highly anticipated second installment of The Potential series, The Pursuit of Wisdom, Ben takes you on an uplifting journey to unleash your potential and accelerate the decision-making wisdom vital during the most significant change in human history. Ben, a serial entrepreneur and attorney, mentioned writing a book series on tapping into human potential during the current era of great change aimed at his grandchildren and children. Navigating Transformation and Embracing Change Michael and Ben discussed the current period of significant transformation in humanity. Michael expressed his excitement about participating in this change and emphasized the importance of learning and understanding to navigate through it. Ben agreed, noting that historically, only a tiny percentage of people have thrived during significant change. He stressed the need to adapt actively and not fear these changes. Both agreed that change can be growth and that it's essential to recognize the opportunities it presents for humanity. They also touched on the fear of success and the importance of embracing change. Global Education, Wisdom, and Personal Growth Ben discussed the potential of reaching higher levels of education and learning worldwide, emphasizing the importance of using available information and knowledge wisely. He introduced his second book, which focuses on developing one's capacity for wisdom and making better decisions. Ben encouraged everyone to apply themselves and make significant progress in a short amount of time. Michael agreed, highlighting the importance of self-improvement and not comparing oneself to others. They both emphasized the potential for personal growth and the need to apply oneself differently. Exploring Wisdom, Personal Growth, and Healthcare Challenges Ben and Michael discussed the potential of wisdom being accessible to everyone and the importance of personal growth. Ben emphasized the role of self-doubt and the ego hindering personal development and suggested that understanding and woodworking with one's psychological body can improve decision-making and find purpose. Michael shared his experience of overcoming self-doubt and embracing change, highlighting the importance of being open to new opportunities. They also touched on the challenges and rewards of working in healthcare, with Michael noting the unpredictability of the field and the need for adaptability. The conversation concluded with Ben mentioning the integration of AI and brain science in technology, hinting at future developments in this area. Addressing Global Challenges With AI and Robotics Ben and Michael discussed the world's challenges, particularly the declining population and the need for increased productivity to sustain economies. They emphasized the importance of technologies like AI and robotics in healthcare and other sectors in addressing these issues. Ben highlighted the need for a shift in mindset from fear to embracing these technologies for their potential benefits. Michael agreed, noting the need for more clinicians and caregivers and the necessity of moving fast on AI and robotics while ensuring safety and caution. They concluded that the world needs to start thinking about accelerating the learning process and getting more people into the system to address these challenges. Addressing Declining Birth Rates and Aging Populations Michael and Ben discussed the implications of declining birth rates and aging populations on infrastructure and economic growth. They noted that countries like Canada and Italy are experiencing a significant decline in new births, which could lead to a shortage of skilled workers and a reduced tax base. Ben emphasized the need for proactive measures, particularly in healthcare, to address these issues. They also touched on the challenges faced during the pandemic, such as surgery delays and access to diagnosis. Enhancing Healthcare Productivity With Technology Ben and Michael discussed the need for innovation and productivity enhancement in healthcare, particularly in the face of a shortage of healthcare workers. They emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to support healthcare professionals rather than replacing them. They also highlighted the need for a shift in mindset from caution and distraction to proactive problem-solving and preparation for the future. Ben suggested that the current reality requires healthcare professionals to operate at the top of their licenses and that technology can help achieve this. They concluded by expressing optimism for the future, with Ben referring to it as the "age of expanding human potential." Enhancing Human Capabilities With Technology Ben and Michael discussed the potential of technology to enhance human capabilities, such as memory and decision-making. Ben emphasized the importance of the United States leading in this area, as it could significantly impact the world. He also shared his website, potentialistfuture.com, where people can find more about his work and books. Michael appreciated Ben's insights and encouraged others to follow him. They also touched on the importance of self-awareness and ego management in personal growth.

The Former CEO of Anthem Healthcare, Ben Lytle, is back with his latest installment of his POTENTIALIST book series: The Pursuit of Wisdom. Ben is always future thinking and sharing his current message that the next thirty years will be so different and move at such a rapid pace than any other in human history. In his off the charts successful career as a leader, Ben lead with both business and also people skills; he's a great communicator, team builder, a leader who cares about people and sees the world while listening and questions what could be - all of this helped him lead and create Anthem now Elevance Health (with a current market value of more than $120 billion) and also co-founded Silver Sneakers fitness program designed for older adults that became one of the world's largest exercise programs, among many of his ongoing business endeavors. Ben's supportive parents told Ben he could do anything, and he realized that there's a whole body of work for someone to really live their full potential. This calling, this need to live his own potential and help those around him do that, became his north star, and Ben has lead companies and lived a life by these twenty-five words as expressed in his POTENTIALIST series: Ben Lytle's Potentialist Series is a wake-up alarm for an emerging New Reality rapidly altering life as we know it. Times of great change require individuals to adapt, as in the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and three prior industrial revolutions. The New Reality's global impact, institutional disruptions, and sweeping redefinition of work, life, learning, and human potential require a faster, more significant adaptive response by each of us. The old ways won't cut it anymore. (In this video, Ben talks about the Potentialist Series and his new book, The Pursuit of Wisdom youtube.com/watch?v=ZDFbVkS3SkQ) The Potentialist: Your Life in the New Reality of the Next Thirty Years, published in 2022, explains how five change forces are creating a New Reality and recommends seven adaptive preparations. The Potentialist: The Pursuit of Wisdom is a guide to wiser decisions by expanding the capacity for wisdom and operating at one's potential, the ultimate adaptation. Decisions largely determine the quality and measure of a life. Everyone will need to make frequent, unprecedented, complex, life-altering decisions never before faced and take actions never imagined. “Democratizing wisdom—making it practical for more people and ultimately everyone—is the most rational and achievable adaptive response. The New Reality dramatically increases the need for wisdom and the means to achieve it, making democratization not only possible but probable. The challenge to overcome is people underestimating their own potential and humanity's.” Wisdom is easier to develop than generally assumed and can be accelerated. It has been taught for thousands of years, and literature is abundant. Technology can make wisdom easily accessible to learn and apply in decision-making. A growth mechanism inside everyone awaits to assist and guide. Routine unconscious practices performed consciously and intentionally accelerate wisdom. Adults can develop wisdom regardless of age, educational background, or social standing. Little or no expense and nominal daily time are required. The pursuit of wisdom is personal and private, with no need to disclose to others or join anything. All that is needed is a heartfelt, unwavering commitment to becoming your best while equally serving others. Ben Lytle is known for his vision and entrepreneurial success. He has founded or co-founded seven companies to date. Two listed on the New York Stock Exchange, including Anthem (today Elevance), one of the nation's largest companies. He has served on state and presidential healthcare commissions and dozens of company boards.

Join host Peter Winick as he dives into a compelling conversation with Kristin Lytle, CEO of The Leader's Edge, an executive coaching firm transforming senior leadership. Kristin's journey to becoming a thought leader is rooted in her own experiences of self-doubt, which ignited her passion for helping others articulate their ideas and reach their full potential. Kristin shares how her firm elevates potential within organizations development programs that unlock leaders' full potential. But Kristin doesn't stop there. She's on a mission to make executive coaching accessible to the entire organization—not just the top tier. By focusing on building a culture of high integrity and crowding out low-integrity leaders, her team ensures that toxic behaviors are as unacceptable as an obvious safety hazard in the workplace. Kristin also discusses the importance of leveraging the insights of her team. Through regular coaches' roundtables, expert input, and staying attuned to client needs, The Leader's Edge is constantly evolving. The goal? To identify universal leadership challenges and create scalable solutions that blend online learning with executive coaching and community support. As Kristin transitions her firm from a practice to a full-fledged business, she's learned that allocating top talent is as crucial as managing finances. But perhaps the most profound insight she shares is the role fear plays in leadership behavior—fear of judgment, fear of looking foolish, and fear of not knowing enough. These fears, she argues, often drive leaders more than they realize. Three Key Takeaways: • Unlocking Potential at All Levels: Kristin Lytle emphasizes the importance of making leadership coaching accessible to the entire organization, not just the top executives. By crowding out low-integrity leaders and fostering a culture of high integrity, organizations can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. • Scalability Through Universal Solutions: The Leader's Edge focuses on identifying consistent leadership challenges, like influence, that cut across industries and regions. By developing scalable solutions, such as blended learning programs, they make impactful leadership development available to a broader audience. • Fear as a Driving Force in Leadership: One of Kristin's key insights is that fear—whether it's fear of judgment, looking foolish, or not knowing enough—often drives leadership behaviors more than we might realize. Recognizing and addressing these fears is crucial for effective leadership. Kristin's team at The Leader's Edge is working hard to make work a better and more satisfying place to be.  But what is the secret to changing a company's culture?  Find out in this article by Thought Leadership Leverage COO Bill Sherman.

Today we interview Derrick Lytle, who has been a staple at most big trail running events, tackled ultras himself and even gone after the Arizona Trail FKT. Follow Derrick online: https://www.instagram.com/derricklytle/?hl=en Derrick Lytle is a videographer and photographer who got his start in video production by shooting paintball videos. He later transitioned to capturing trail running footage and found a passion for storytelling through visual journalism. He discusses his experiences in the trail running community, including his attempts at the Arizona Trail FKT. Lytle also shares his thoughts on nutrition in endurance sports, emphasizing the importance of fueling appropriately for the level of intensity and duration of the activity. In this conversation, we discuss the topics of fat adaption and fat burning in ultrarunning, the importance of individualized nutrition strategies, and the challenges and rewards of stage racing and bikepacking. We also share stories of their adventures, including a terrifying experience on dangling ladders in Mexico. Takeaways Derek Lytle started his career in video production by shooting paintball videos and later transitioned to capturing trail running footage. He emphasizes the importance of storytelling in his work and how it has evolved from a hobby to a career. Lytle discusses his experiences in the trail running community and the challenges of balancing work and personal goals. He shares his thoughts on nutrition in endurance sports, highlighting the need to fuel appropriately for the level of intensity and duration of the activity. Ultrarunners are likely burning more fat than they think, even during high-intensity efforts. Individualized nutrition strategies are crucial for success in endurance events. Stage racing offers a unique challenge of pacing oneself and managing nutrition over multiple days. Bikepacking allows for greater distance and exploration compared to hiking or running. Creating and completing self-designed routes can be fulfilling and rewarding. Adventure activities often involve calculated risks and require problem-solving skills. Safety standards may vary in different countries and outdoor activities. Connecting with the running and outdoor community can enhance the overall experience. Sound Bites "I wear a lot of hats, but the main thing would be making videos, taking photos." "I think more than anything, it was just like learning to tell stories." "To shoot something and make it good, I feel like you have to do that sport for the most part." "All ultrarunners are burning fat to a certain extent." "Your body is naturally going to be in a fat burning state versus high glucose burning." "No one winning or doing well at these races shows up and does 100 grams of carbs an hour for the first time." Jason Lytle (Grandaddy) with Gruff Rhys

Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2024 40:49

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriting visionaries who came to prominence in the 1990s with well respected indie bands, and who both have vital new music out now: Jason Lytle and Gruff Rhys. Lytle started making music under the name Grandaddy back in 1992. He was pro skateboarder who found a second passion in home recording, and as you'll hear in this chat, kind of stumbled upon some guys who helped him flesh out the sound into something both humble and grand. The first run of Grandaddy albums—including Under the Western Freeway and 2000's classic The Sophtware Slump—felt a bit like quieter, more heartfelt cousins to the music the Flaming Lips were making at the time. After that initial run, the band eventually split up, only to reform sporadically over the years. Lytle also recorded some really fascinating solo records while also time—as you'll hear—to try and leave the music world behind a little bit. But he's been called back to the Grandaddy world with a brand new album called Blue WAV, and it's everything you'd expect from him brain: a mixture of sweet sadness with fuzzy guitars and synths from another age. Check out “Cabin in my Mind” from Blue WAV right here. The other half of today's conversation is Gruff Rhys, who just released his 25th album overall in a career that has spanned 35 years and taken some fascinating turns. He's still probably best known as the frontman of the colorful, psych-leaning Welsh pop band Super Furry Animals, which was signed to the venerated Creation Records label back in the 1990s, and whose records and visuals always zigged when you thought they might zag—that's a compliment. For his solo work, Rhys has been genre-expansive to say the least, but his brand new record, Sadness Sets Me Free, is refreshingly straightforward pop. As you'll hear in this chat, it was recorded pretty quickly, without a lot of fuss. It doesn't sound miles away from the new Grandaddy album, really. Check out “Bad Friend” right here. As it turns out, these two toured together a million years ago, and each has fond memories of that time—a soccer match, a special parting gift, and more. They also chat about Lytle's preference to stay away from the madness of the big city, even as he lives perilously close to it once again as well as their tendency to make up words in their songs when the ones that exist just won't do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gruff Rhys and Jason Lytle for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, the Talkhouse theme was composed and performed by the Range, and we offer special thanks this week to Keenan Kush. See you next time!

Grandaddy - "The Town Where I'm Livin Now" from the 2023 album Sunday: Excess Baggage on Dangerbird Records Long-time KEXP faves Grandaddy recently a digital-only collection of rarities and b-sides titled Sumday: Excess Baggage. With a career spanning three decades, there are a lot of gems within, including today's Song of the Day, a dreamy tribute to songwriter Jason Lytle's home in California. “I like making songs like this," he shares in a press release. "Lots of bleak but sweet visuals. Everyday stuff available for everyone to see…but some of us just end up with the twisted work of documenting it.” On the collection, he continues: “After many years of hammering away at writing and recording as Grandaddy, Sumday seems to be the center of it and where it all peaked. To the journalists we were, ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' It was a tumultuous and exciting time for us for sure. Also very exhausting." “Revisiting this material and reflecting on those times has been a double edged sword. Bittersweet is an apt word, I suppose. Twenty years after the fact, I'm just grateful to be alive and kicking… celebrating that moment in time by re-releasing the original album, B sides and extras of that era, and even some raw cassette demos of the album itself a sort of sketchbook/rough draft of the LP in cassette form. So be it then. ‘On the verge of greatness, underrated, overlooked, unsung.' This is what all of that sounds like. I'll take it.” Revisit our 2020 interview with Lytle on their last full-length, 2017's Last Place, and the passing of their bassist Kevin Garcia.  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
