In this episode, Antonio eagerly delves into his latest photography book finds. A neighbor gifts him a captivating book on Bresson from a local street library. Both Ward and Antonio touch on a newly published book called "The Things You Wanted to Say But Never Did" by Giloy Concepcion—a unique photo journal designed to process emotions through prompts. Motivations behind the photos spark their interest, alongside a delightful exploration of cliché subjects in the humor-filled "Photo No-Nos." They also dig into the importance of setting constraints and making decisive choices in photography. Antonio enthusiastically recommends "Think Like a Street Photographer" by Matt Stuart, a treasure trove of insights into the art. As their lively conversation progresses, Antonio gets into Helen Levitt's mesmerizing pictures of 1930s-40s New York, which lead to a fascinating tidbit about her association with Walker Evans and her distinctive presence in his secret subway portraits. Ward then takes the spotlight, sharing his upcoming photography project at the Calgary Stampede—a local fair with thrilling rodeo events and a bustling midway. Since 2014, Ward has immersed himself in capturing the essence of this vibrant event through a street photography approach, and he excitedly reveals his meticulous preparations. Ward's thoughtful approach involves running the gauntlet, skillfully fishing for those captivating moments amidst the stampede's excitement. Inspired by his experiences in New York, he plans to be more selective in his photography this time around. With anticipation buzzing in the air, they wrap up the discussion, eagerly looking forward to sharing Ward's progress in future podcast episodes. Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Neale has a bad case of flight wind and Kev is saving £1 a week for the rest of his life so he can afford Leica's new Monochrom camera, whilst wishing and hoping that Fujifilm may at last release their own dedicated BW-only camera, especially now that even Pentax have launched theirs! Questions today on sharpening; to sharpen or not to sharpen, switching from a DLSR with an optical viewfinder to an electronic viewfinder in a Fujifilm mirrorless, building a new portfolio, working for free, removing pictures of those who have passed from online portfolios, shooting tethered with Fujifilm cameras, wonky frozen sub monitors and more. “None. They should just go out and photograph and stop talking about it. That’s the only way they are going to find themselves. They can’t do it in their heads – they have to go out and do it in the camera and get it on film” - Berenice Abbott - when asked is she had any gems of wisdom for the photographer today, Professional Photographer's Survival Guide by Charles E. RotkinOur guest this week is London-based photographer, Matt Stuart. Best known as a “street photographer,” (or “photographer” which is the preferred term), Matt told us how his former life as a skater and working in a call centre prepared him for a career in photography. We didn’t spend much time discussing Berenice Abbott, - or Walker Evans, or Helen Levitt or Robert Frank - but take a look at her work which spanned portraiture of avant-garde artists, the modernising spaces of New York City, to representations of scientific concepts. Michael and Kai met up with Richard Bram while he was getting ready to move from New York to London. Richard's book, Richard Bram New York, had just been published and symbolically it had become Richard's summation of his time as a street photographer in New York City. "What I tell my students is…the one thing we can not teach and they can not buy is time, and time is the key to it, you just have to keep going out there…you have to be extremely positive, you can’t go out there thinking nothing is going to happen" Matt Stuart is an extremely positive person. He's the kind of photographer where, after you have a conversation with him, you just want to run outside and make photographs. One of his favorite accusations about his photographs is that he must have set it up. He loves this accusation because that means all of his hours spent on the street investigating life for that perfect juxtaposition or theatrical frame have paid off. Matt sits down with Kai and Michael to discuss his new book, "All That Life Can Afford" as well as how he got started and what it takes to be a street photographer. Matt Stuart shoots people. As one of the UK’s most prolific and highly respected street photographers, he has spent nearly two decades obsessively pounding the streets of London, where he lives, in pursuit of those elusive, magical moments when all the different elements of a good street photo - colour, composition, humour, happenstance - merge together for that split second, where Matt is poised and ready to capture the moment- and sometimes anticipate it - with his trusty Leica. His first book - All That Life Can Afford - containing many of the highlights from these trips, is published in February 2016 under his own imprint, Plague Press. And you can order a copy direct from his website via the link below. If you want to jump on the end of year best-of bandwagon (and why wouldn't you?) please do nominate your favourite photobook of 2015, in the comment section of the website. Happy holidays!
Born in 1974, Matt Stuart was raised in the leafy suburbs of Harrow, North West London. He admits to a less than distinguished school career, but was called upon aged 11 to play a trumpet solo in front of the Queen Mother. Her Majesty’s reaction is not recorded. A little later, in 1986, Matt discovered skateboarding after watching the film “Back to the Future”. Skating occupied his every waking moment until 1994, when he looked up from the half-pipe and noticed that girls had got a lot more interesting. He also indulged in a brief, ill-advised affair with Kung Fu. Matt’s father, keenly aware that his son would never be the next Bruce Lee, introduced him to photography, handing over books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ever since then, photography has been Matt’s overriding passion, although he’s still quite interested in skateboards and girls. (But thankfully not Kung Fu).
