Above Photograph © Claudio Edinger When it comes to photography, Claudio Edinger has a Midas touch. Equally celebrated for his immersive photo series, the intimacy of his portraits, and his aerial views that conjure a sense of the eternal through selective focus, his compulsion for research drives adjustments to his photographic strategy from one project to the next. In today's show, we unpack the many facets of Claudio's storied career, from his arrival in New York and early documentation of Brooklyn's Hasidic community in the late 1970s to the environmental portraits he made inside Manhattan's infamous Chelsea Hotel, and beyond. Learn the backstory to his fortuitous connection with master portraitist Philippe Halsman, and the influence this had on his photographic vocabulary. We also discuss Claudio's aerial imagery made from helicopters and drones, and debate the slippery slope between noteworthy content, image quality, and resolution. As a longtime disciple of meditation, Claudio's approach to photography is equally influenced by the underlying flow of energy essential to life on this planet, which led him to state, “I'm open to whatever the universe brings my way. But the universe has to conspire in your favor. My whole life has been like that. I've been guided. My intuition brings me to places, and the place drags me into it.” Guest: Claudio Edinger Episode Timeline: 3:03: Claudio's beginnings in photography while studying economics in Sao Paulo, and his first exhibit at the Sao Paulo Museum of Art. 4:55: A move to New York in 1976 and a two-year project on Brooklyn's Hasidic community. 8:42: Connecting with master portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, and how this expanded Claudio's vocabulary as a photographer. 15:35: A move to the Chelsea Hotel and a new photographic strategy to make environmental portraits of the building and its residents. 19:52: The influence of August Sander's work, and Claudio's pursuit of intimacy to create images with universal meaning. 25:22: The organic path of Claudio's photographic approach, and how he developed his selective focus technique. 28:15: Episode Break 29:06: The predictable visual effect of a Hasselblad's square frame, combined with a tripod and flash for portraits of patients in a Brazilian insane asylum. 33:06: Using the same techniques to capture the insanity inside an institution, as well as to photograph the institutionalized insanity of Brazilian Carnival. 37:51: Claudio's assignment work, plus his time as a New York paparazzo and the lessons this taught him. 39:28: Claudio's experience as a war photographer in El Salvador, and the urgency of living connected to war. 43:42: Shifting to a 4x5 Toyo camera to further explore the tilt-shift look of selective focus. 48:57: The shortcomings of large format that forced Claudio to shift to digital and then discover aerial photography. 54:17: Comparing aerial photos from a helicopter with those made from a drone, plus Claudio's thoughts on viewing the world from the point of view of eternity. Guest Bio: Claudio Edinger is one of Brazil's preeminent photographers. After studying economics at Mackenzie University in São Paulo in the early 70s, he turned his attention to photography, and he hasn't stopped since. Edinger moved to New York City in 1976, and during the 20 years he spent in the US, he completed immersive photo essays about the Hasidic community of Brooklyn, the denizens of Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel, and habitués of LA's Venice Beach. He also freelanced for Brazilian and North American publications such as Veja, Time, Life, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times Magazine, among many others. The author of more than twenty books, Edinger's photographs have been collected worldwide and exhibited by institutions such as New York's International Center of Photography, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Maison Europeénne de la Photographie in Paris, and the São Paulo Museum of Art, to name but a few. Edinger has received many honors for his work, including the Ernst Haas Award, the Hasselblad Award, the Higashikawa Award, and the Leica Medal of Excellence, which he received twice. Always seeking new approaches to his work, Edinger has explored a wide range of camera formats and photographic techniques over the course of his career. In 2000, he began working with a large format camera, using selective focus to approximate human vision, and in 2015, he started an exploration of aerial photography—a theme that continues to this day. Associate Professor Donna West Brett gives a lecture on the collection of photobooks donated to the Bodleian Library in 2020 by Sir Charles Chadwyck-Healey. Conveying meaning through photos alone, the photobook is a radical format that enabled the widespread dissemination of modernist aesthetics. This lecture will take a closer look at the way photobooks portray the ‘everyday' – the familiar, the practical, the ordinary – and its intersection with the visual languages of politics and propaganda. Speaker Donna West Brett is Associate Professor and Chair of Art History at The University of Sydney. She is author of Photography and Place: Seeing and Not Seeing Germany After 1945 (Routledge, 2016); co-editor with Natalya Lusty, Photography and Ontology: Unsettling Images (Routledge, 2019), and has published widely on photographic history. She is Research Leader for Photographic Cultures at Sydney, and Editorial Member for the Visual Culture and German Contexts Series, Bloomsbury. Brett is a recipient of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, Ernst and Rosemarie Keller Fund, and Sloan Fellow in Photography at the Bodleian Libraries for 2024.
How much do you know about New York City's 1982 Loft Law, which established a process for artists to obtain legal occupancy of the raw industrial spaces they inhabited, while also providing rent stabilization and protection from future eviction? Or the pigeon fanciers who were once a fixture across the rooftops of Brooklyn and remain valued as neighborhood sentinels? If these poetic vestiges from Gotham's storied past have you dreaming about the good old days, then you won't want to miss our podcast with gen-Z New Yorkers (and good buddies) Joshua Charow and Josh Katz. Their ambitious, self-assigned photo projects explore rarified mini-worlds featuring magical artist spaces and exuding West Side Story vibes. While their respective explorations occupy opposite ends of the struggle for prized urban space, the insights they share when discussing both their working methods and their paths to publishing are instructive and inspirational. What's more, their spirited camaraderie in conversation is infectious! As Charow aptly notes toward the end of the episode, “I have to say, I don't know if this book would exist without Josh Katz. Because I started this project towards the end of him finishing his, and as a close friend, he was able to basically show me the roadmap of how you get from idea to a finished book. And like he said, it's really hard to understand how that works without someone in your life who can show you the steps you have to take.” And for bonus points, listen up to discover the former guest of the show who also sat down with Charow, and ultimately lined him up with a book agent! This is The Digital Story Podcast #907, August 8, 2023. Today's theme is "5 Photography Books that I Recommend." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Photography books have room in our lives just like inkjet prints. Studying a photographer's work by flipping through the pages shows a depth that we just don't get from a tablet display or even a laptop screen. And I have five recommendations that prove this point beautifully. Learn more on today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.
Meet Libby from Momento in Sydney and discover how this Australian photo book printing company came into existence - as the second one in the world at the time - and how they are serving their clients in Australia and New Zealand today. Momento is so much more than a printing company. The three founders, of which Libby is one, came from the world of digital media in the mid 1990s and met when working for a CD-ROM company. They loved photography, travel and also family memories. Because they couldn't find a printing company that suited their needs and fulfilled their printing quality requirements, they started their own business, offering exactly this! One of the main focus for them is accuracy in colour reproduction and quality at every level has been their defining feature. They even developed their own book designing software, which is accessible for free. Interestingly, one of Libby's first books was her dad's memoirs, bringing together decades of photos. We can't but agree when she shares how book creation is about story telling. We are also talking about different formats and sizes of books, and how to choose the right one. There are different paper options, too, and Libby explains which one is good depending on the purpose and kind of book. She also shares many more practical tips that start long before the book design … namely, when taking photographs! One of her favourite ways to pass on family history is through recipe books, for which Momento has developed various templates if you don't want to create your own. She says: ‘Making a photo book is not just about you, it is also for those people in the future who won't be sitting beside you when they're looking through it, who get to learn about you and through learning about you, they learn about themselves.' Momento offers something for every taste: whether you want to design minimalistic photo books with lots of white space or are a scrapbooker who likes frames, embellishments, background and other decorative features, they've got you covered. Libby encourages us to let the purpose of the book guide us and to turn a book from a record into a keepsake by adding stories. If you need more inspiration go to https://www.momento.com.au/inspiration and don't forget that they offer a special to our listeners with 25 % off your next Momento photo book (offer valid until 31 October 2023). On this PPN Camera and Inspiration episode, Marco interviewed the photographer, author, and educator Martin U Waltz on the show. Martin has published three different photo books with three different publishers in the past 12 months and shared his different experiences and tips as a photographer about the process of photo book publishing. Martin was also on the previous PPN Camera and Inspiration podcast episode #28, where he shared tips on how to get your photos into a photo exhibition. You can go back and listen to this episode here: https://www.photopodcasts.com/podcasts/camera-and-inspiration-28-ppn-how-to-get-your-photos-into-an-exhibition-with-martin-u-waltz This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Martin picked Tunesion-born photographer Skander Khlif. Skander is a documentary photographer who is based in Munich, Germany. He describes his work as “documenting life in public space by telling stories while retaining a note of mystery.” Martin is very impressed by Skanders work, whom he describes as a wanderer between worlds and cultures with a vast portfolio of extremely creative and well-composed images. You can find out more about Skander Khlif's work by visiting his website: https://skanderkhlif.com/stories How to get your photo book published: In the main segment of this show, Martin shared valuable information and different approaches on how to get your photo book published by a publisher. His information is based on the different photo books that he has published with different publishing houses in the past and covers the main steps from the photo book idea, selecting and contacting publishers, to the writing and photo selection process. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Martin's pick: “Harry Gruyaert” Photographs by Harry Gruyaert. Martin picked the photo book: “Harry Gruyaert” by Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert. From the publisher's description: “Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Harry Gruyaert revolutionized creative and experimental uses of color in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by cinema and American photographers, his work defined new territory for color photography: an emotive, non-narrative, and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world… …Gruyaert's images are autonomous, often independent of any context or thematic logic. This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is a superb overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses.” The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 144 pages Amazon: https://amzn.to/3NuuU1b Marco also mentioned the three books, that Martin has recently published and talked about on the show: Streetfotografie made in Germany 357 pages in German, published by Rheinwerk Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/46vIk5K Next Level Streetfotografie: 256 pages in German, published by dpunkt Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/3NvwW1g Berlin Unseen: 208 pages in English and German, published by teNeues Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/3PEBrsT Links to Martin U Waltz: Web: https://www.StreetBerlin.net Links to Marco Larousse: Web: www.MarcoLarousse.com Twitter: @HamburgCam Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marco.larousse/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcoLarousse1 Workshops: https://www.marcolarousse.com/street-photography-workshops/ Eigen Energie Wende: https://www.eigenenergiewende.de Links to PPN: Web: www.PhotoPodcasts.com or PPN.fm Twitter: @Photopodcasts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photopodcasts/ YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/PPNPhotoPodcastNetwork Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/ppn-apple-podcasts Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/PPN-GooglePodcast Spotify: http://bit.ly/PPN-fm Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) or Amazon Germany link (click here) which will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H or Amazon without our link. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.

Is ai really coming to get us? Maybe not yet. Maybe not at all. This week is a show about the majesty of music, the beauty of emotion, the tactile nature of bookmaking, finding your why, celebrating our mistakes, just being human. We hear from Paul Gotts and John Ash who believe in giving a voice to unpublished photographers and Extra Miler Lynn Fraser who is part of their new project called Littoral. Letters to the show about rekindling a love for photography post-pandemic, why the moon seems to be sharper and more detailed on some smartphones, and the realisation that your why may be a lot closer to home than you think. There are stories on chasing the moon's shadow from a 737 and finding dust in your wonderfully soft-centred eye. See the SHOW PAGE for reference pictures and films. Women photographers take center stage in this week's show, in celebration of International Women's Day and Women's History Month. We reveal the blind spot of photo history in a chat about the book A World History of Women Photographers, with photo historian and co-author Luce Lebart and contributing writer Pauline Vermare. Gracing the pages of this book's 500-page heft are images and stories behind 300 women photographers, spanning both photo history and geographic reach. Listen in to learn about the exhaustive process Lebart and co-author Marie Robert undertook to find this range of talent and then commission essays from 160 women writers and curators. We also discuss how the position of women within photography has changed over time and across cultures. There are fresh discoveries to be made by even the most ardent photography devotees, as illustrated by the many photographer names and related resources we mention during the episode, also listed below in our show notes. Guests: Luce Lebart and Pauline Vermare Top shot © The National Museum of Iceland, Reykjavik Episode Timeline 4:17: Luce Lebart describes the editorial statement behind the book A World History of Women Photographers as a manifesto to complete a history that already exists. 10:14: Back stories about women working as picture editors, art directors, designers, and art buyers in photo industry trenches, with male photographers as hunter gathers in the field. 13:32: The international network behind the research for this book. Which came first—the contributing writers or featured photographers? 21:21: The matter of women photographers who stayed in the shadow of a master or did not receive equal recognition as her spouse. 26:45: Avoiding the pitfall of a western centered approach in the geographical representation of photographers selected for the book 30:56: Additional book projects and databases of women photographers. 33:44: Episode break 34:38: Pauline Vermare describes differences between France and America in their respective approaches to photography. 38:36: Pauline discusses the Japanese women photographers she wrote about for the book. 45:00: American photographer Nancy Burson's stature as a forerunner of current trends for AI generated photographs. 49:40: How A World History of Women Photographers encourages questions of readers, inspiring Pauline to create a forthcoming book on Japanese women photographers. An exhibition of the work will open next weekend at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. Both of those moments, the personal and the political were in the space of a few weeks and I wanted to use photography to reconnect with the community I grew up in…but it was impossible to ignore the shift from that point. It was almost night and day. I really took it to heart and found it quite depressing, that societal turn towards anti-immigrant populism.”
In our 27th podcast, 48th conversation we chat with photographer Steve McCurry - world famous author of 27 books and recipient of countless prestigious awards. Steve and host Jeff Dunas talk about what it's like to work in the streets with very little gear and only one translator or driver to rock his immediately identifiable images. He talks about how he started, being smuggled into Afghanistan early in his career, Magnum, how to avoid smiles, his teen years fascinated by cars, drugs and girls and most surprising of all, his big, outsized McCurry-esque plans for his work after he takes his last walk down an exotic street somewhere with his camera. Come hang with us.
