Anyway, I hope that you are all busy again and working hard to become a better photographer, and a better human being. As I mention at the beginning of the podcast, it’s been a while since the last episode. My apologies, but it’s all about time and I don’t seem to have much of it these days. As a temporary solution, I’m aiming to post a new episode every month and we’ll see how it goes. This is a special episode, recorded live at the Wanstead Tap in London on 17th December 2019. A bit of a Christmas party. We had just enough people to create a great atmosphere and had a wonderful guest in, Stephen Leslie, who entertained us with stories from his book, Sparks - Adventures in Street Photography. We had people travel from London, Germany and even Montreal to be there, which is pretty amazing, and we drank beer and wine - and whisky shots - and ate pizza. An all round success I think, and hopefully we can do more in the future. Thanks to Stephen, everyone that came on the night, all who helped out, and all that continue to support the podcast. It is very much appreciated.* Recoding quality warning! Although the recording on the night was great we did have a questions section and you can’t really hear the question, but I’ve left them in because you can probably figure it out from the answers given. We made it to 50! Which is not really any more important than 49, or 51, but here we are. It’s been a blast and we’ve been incredibly lucky with the quality of guests over the past year and a half who have had many different stories to tell. All genres and all different routes into photography. Some of who set out to be a photographer, or artist, and others who just seem to have happed up on it. Photography finds them. No matter the route, or start point, it’s a reminder that photography is a multi faceted and far reaching medium. There are no definitive answers, no clear paths to success and no short cuts. It promises everything and in most cases delivers nothing other than the satisfaction of making a nice picture. But it can also change lives, perspectives, even laws, and can show us worlds that we could never dream of. It can connects us to each other and instil empathy. It can be the best therapy and the greatest frustration. No matter what, it’s here, ever changing and it’s not going away. Photography can’t be everything to everyone, but it can be whatever we want it to be, as long as we are only ever ourselves. The photography industry is more than just the genre that we work in. It’s a multifaceted thing that reaches into all aspects of society, wether we notice it or not, and it’s more than just photographers. In some cases it’s the photographer and client, or the photographer and their art, but in others it’s layers of agents, ad agencies, art directors, corporate clients and contracts. One of the most seen, yet unnoticed, genres of photography is promotional photography. More specifically TV promotional photography. When we look at iPlayer or Netflix or Amazon Prime for something to watch we are presented with a sea of images, all vying for our attention. The Reith Lectures - Richard Ansett, BBC.We all might know someone who shoots this kind of thing - well, I have and you know me. so…. - but who commissions the work? Sometimes it’s difficult to relax into it because of nerves, from myself and from the guest, but overall I think it’s the most natural way to find out about other photographers. It’s not necessarily about the work itself. I found my voice by understanding photographers, and relating to photographers, and I hope that this approach will do the same for you. We’re 40! How did that happen? We grew up so quickly….. It doesn’t seem like two minutes ago that Bradley and I recorded the first, very shaky and nervous, episode back in January 2018. A lot has changed since then.Outerfocus started as a way to introduce some photography history, in an easily digestible manner, and to have conversations with photographers, about photography. The two things that helped me most with my own photography were: An understanding of where photography came from, and, what drove photographers to practice. Although the photography history aspect of the podcast has dwindled somewhat in the past few months, I feel the conversations are becoming stronger, and that takes us on to the, ‘why’. The, ‘why’, is what helped me to understand myself and the world around me. I learned more about photography by understanding the philosophies of photographers than I did by looking at their photographs. It made me realise that the idea is important, and the photograph is just a consequence of our study and practice. Maybe not for everyone, but that’s how I came to understand it and it fundamentally changed me as a human being. It also freed me from not just the constraints of industry expectations, but societal expectations, too. So, Happy 40th to Outerfocus! I hope that me passing on some of what I think is important in photography, and life, can raise some questions and create some new ideas for you. I’m not doing this alone mind you. The guests are adding their own unique perspective to the Outerfocus archive, and I’m still learning, a lot, and long may that continue.I expect you all know of the photographers that had an influence on me, but there are some that never really get a mention. Mostly because the genres they work in don’t come up in conversation too frequently. I mean, name one architectural photographer…….I could easily name a few, but that’s because it’s something I have a great interest in. I know who the first one would be, though, and when it comes to individuality there aren’t many better than the rather exceptional, Hélène Binet.Hélène is a Swiss-French architectural photographer living in London, and she is one of the leading architectural photographers in the world. Best known for her work with architects Daniel Libeskind, Peter Zumthor and Zaha Hadid, she has published books on works of several architects. Ok, a couple of things before we get started.Outerfocus has its first sponsor! Big news, I know. PicDrop contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I’d be interested in them sponsoring the podcast. Well, more supporting the podcast because they like it so much. I agreed to test their product to see if it would be of value to not only me, but you too. I don’t want outerfocus to be a platform for any old shit as long they are giving us money, and anything that is promoted should be of as much value to photographers as everything else we do.I’m pleased to say, I loved it, and PicDrop are now onboard with Outerfocus. I’ve been using WeTransfer and Dropbox for years and PicDrop seemed to have combined the best bits, left out the worst bits, and have added some pretty useful features. Clients can see their high resolution files in full screen galleries, as well as thumbnails, rate images using a traffic light system, leave comments and make their own folders and selections for download. It’s a much more personal and involving experience than WeTransfer or DropBox. There is even Lightroom integration so you can upload directly to PicDrop. You can get three free months of PicDrop premium using this link - https://www.picdrop.de/go/outerfocusIf you’re delivering digital files to your customers, I’ve not used a better product. Secondly, you’ll notice there is no Bradley on this episode. Moving forward I’ll be doing more in person and one to one interviews, just to see how it goes. I have other ideas for Outerfocus and I feel it needs to evolve and change, as to not become too formulaic, and I need to work on my interview/conversation skills to be able to do this. That’s not to say Bradley will never co-host again, or be involved in the facebook group, or that there won’t be guest co-hosts, but it’s just something I feel I need to do now. I recently came across Vinca’s photography (No System) and was instantly connected to a time, and a scene, that I was almost part of. Our conversation cements the fact that Vinca is as genuine as her photographs, her experiences are real, and her photographs of not just the rave scene, but life itself, are as personal as any other photographer or artist I’ve ever seen. ‘We’re not free, the way society is set up now. So my way of feeling free is to make fun, to play. It’s like jesting. I think that’s been taken away from images of people, and images of women especially. I don’t often see images of women looking comfortable and happy, in a non-extreme way. I want my pictures to be edgy and interesting, but people don’t have that much fun any more. So joy, and fun. That’s what’s important.’ - Vinca PerersenVinca tells us about the beginnings of the Rave scene in the UK, the Criminal Justice Bill that put a stop to it, and travelling with sound systems in Europe, among many other things. The Martin Parr Foundation has acquired a copy of No System, including dummy book, originally published by Steidl, and she has been featured in Tate Modern, I-D, Hero and Aperture to name but a few. 2020 sees a large exhibition in Sunderland (which I’m pretty excited about) and a reissue of No System is imminent. We hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. This weeks history of photography was non-existent, but we were going to look at, Christina Broom.Christina was a Scottish photographer, and credited as "the UK's first female press photographerChristina was appointed official photographer to the Household Division from 1904 to 1939 and had a darkroom in the Chelsea Barracks; she also took many photographs of local scenes, including those at the Palace, as well as The Boat Race and Suffragette marches.Collections of her photographs are held at the Museum of London, the National Portrait Gallery, the Imperial War Museum, London, the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.......Full show notes - https://www.outerfocuspodcast.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/outerfocuspodcast)

"There is still a misunderstanding on the subject of the straight print, as opposed to the modified print. Some champions of pure photography, as it is called, will even deny that a modified print is a photograph at all. For my part, I believe that if the X deposit forming an image is built up by the action of light, under the shadow of another image, transparent, and also due to light action, the result must be a photograph, whatever modifications the photographer has thought proper to introduce amongst the relative proportions of the deposit" - Robert DemachyWelcome to the Outerfocus podcast! This week we are joined by Argentinian photographer, Facundo Santana. Although Facu shoots weddings he is also a great street photographer, and we discuss why shooting the street can better inform wedding photography. English isn't Facu's first language and he has been learning by watching movies, reading books, and listening to the Outerfocus podcast (haha he's learning English from me! Some weird Geordie/Argentinian hybrid going on there)That said, he did a great job as it's difficult enough to learn a new language, let alone express ideas and concepts. Facu has agreed to write a guest post for the Outerfocus website to try and explain a little better his ideas around the benefit or practicing street photography. History this week is, Robert Demachy, and we talk about his processes, approach to the medium and his involvement with Stieglitz's Photo Secession. We also discuss his frustration with the conservative views of other photographers of the day and how that same issue is alive and well even to this day. Correction: I mention Julia Margaret Cameron as a photographer who went the ideals of Stieglitz and the Photo Secession. My apologies. It was, of course, Gertrude Käsebier.Facundo Santana Linkshttp://www.facundosantana.com/https://www.instagram.com/facusantana/?hl=enHost Links:https://www.outerfocuspodcast.cominfo@outerfocuspodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/f8kym/Bradley Hansonhttps://www.bradleyhanson.comhttps://www.facebook.com/bradleyhansonphotographyhttps://www.instagram.com/bradleyhansonphotography/https://twitter.com/bradleyhansonIan Weldonhttp://ianweldon.comhttps://www.instagram.com/not_wedding_photography/https://www.facebook.com/Ian-Weldon-Photography-124854627581367/Books:Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/outerfocuspodcast)
