Ed Templeton is a professional skateboarder, contemporary artist, and photographer. A teen skate prodigy from Orange County, California, Ed turned pro in 1990, just before graduating high school. He did a lot of touring for skate demos, along the way picking up a camera and documenting the scene around him. He painted and drew, and later incorporated his artwork and graphics for Toy Machine, the skateboard company he founded in 1994, which he continues to own and manage. Templeton's visual artwork first gained recognition in the late 1990s as part of the Beautiful Losers collective loosely gathered around Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He and his wife Deanna—also a photographer—are the subjects of the 2000 Mike Mills film, Deformer. Templeton's subject matter focuses on the ethos of suburban and street life, which sometimes includes beach culture, surfers, and surfing. He has published over thirty books and zines of his photographs and artwork, including one of his most famous titles, “Teenage Smokers.” His work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world, most recently at the Long Beach Museum of Art, in an exhibition titled: Wires Crossed: The Culture of Skateboarding, 1995-2012. In this episode of Soundings, Templeton and Jamie Brisick talk about crafting a sustainable career as a skateboarder, capitalism, skateboarding's DIY ethos, documenting skate culture, becoming a painter, identity, individualism, and Mark Gonzalez.

American artist & skateboarding hall-of-famer Ed Templeton talks to Dominique Nzeyimana at Tim Van Laere Gallery Antwerp a decade after they first sat down together. As Ed's new show, 'The Sprawl', opens at this esteemed gallery, the pair discuss his unique legacy carved out of skate culture and fine art. In this episode, Ed Templeton discusses the balance between practicality and artistry in building an immersive art show. He explains how honest conversations with Tim Van Laere led to a year of honing his artistic vision for this new expo and what giving people the 'full Templeton experience' means. Ed also opens up about life growing up, the outer/inner wounds that shaped his art, and how founding his brand, Toy Machine, gave him the freedom to pursue his aspirations on his own terms. Collectors of Ed Templeton's art include names like Demi Moore, John Waters and Judd Apatow. Ed's extensive body of work is known for its candid portrayal of humanity - bloody palm and middle finger up. Themes of adolescence, suburbia, counterculture and personal complexities run through his oeuvre. His acclaimed 25-plus-deep catalogue of photo books includes the incredible 'Teenage Smokers', the ground-breaking 'Deformer' and the fairly new publication 'Wires Crossed'. Ed Templeton talks to us about his artistic journey, how his paintings and photographs are connected, advice to young photographer's making their first book, having his own darkroom, considering himself more of an archive builder than photographer, skate culture and artistry, not selling out and more!
California-based artist Ed Templeton is known for his interdisciplinary practice, most notably of photographs documenting people and street life of Huntington Beach, California, intimate portraits of his wife, and paintings depicting the psychological complexity of American suburbia. He first gained recognition as a teenage skateboard prodigy in the late 1980s and taught himself to photograph on the fly while actively touring for competitions. All of Templeton's subjects come from his own life: “Everything I've ever shot has just been on the path that I've been on, be it skating or travel or street photography.” Blurring portraiture and landscape, Templeton works across photography, painting, and drawing to explore the ugliness, banality, and beauty of the familiar everyday world. He and Zuckerman discuss permission, looking at ourselves, what's weird about Orange County, finding skateboarding, the absence of free will, seeing things before they happen, managing fear, the flow state, mining his own archives, hyper reality, and collaborating with his wife!

Britta released a solo album, Luck or Magic, in 2016. Ryder the Eagle BIO My name is Ryder The Eagle. I was born under the sign of Cancer in the south of France and like the planets predicted, I dedicated the beginning of my life to finding true love. Two EPs, a marriage and a divorce later, I embarked on a "Follymoon", an incandescent kind of a honeymoon where loneliness meets the folly of freedom. I traveled across the USA on the Greyhound bus, lugging my microphone along sidewalks and crossings, diners, and traffic lights. I spent two years in London crafting my break-up songs and sang them all over the globe supporting Adam Green, Jonathan Bree, and a few others. I ended up in Mexico City, where I’m currently living. I’m driving an old Chevy Caprice which I don’t have insurance for. My trunk is full of memories from a past that I can’t let go. One day I went to this Scottish town called Plean, unloaded everything, and wrote nine songs about it. So if you ever need a ride, I’ve got room in the car now - and we can play my first album on the stereo. Can’t wait to meet you.
Ed Templeton joins the podcast to talk about how he went from being one of the most influential street skaters of his generation to showcasing his paintings and photography in highly respected galleries and collections. Although Ed's story has been told many times in some great interviews and documentaries, I get the chance to trace his history of growing up in Orange County in a fairly tough family situation and how that eventually led him to skateboarding. For those who aren't familiar with Ed Templeton, his influence to the world of skateboarding is undeniable and in 2016 he was inducted into the skateboarding hall of fame. But this conversation dives into how his skate career led him into the world of painting and photography and some of the early relationships with people like Aaron Rose and Alleged Gallery that would help push him into the national spotlight as an artist. During our talk I get the chance to ask Ed what attracts him so much to the daily habit of street photography and constantly chasing another image, what he's learned about the human condition after years of closely observing others, what it is about skateboarding that leads so many to a creative life, and the advice he gives to those out there chasing their own dreams of living creatively. So sit back and enjoy this conversation with one of the most requested guests I've had. This week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast features Shaney Jo Darden, founder of Keep A Breast Foundation - a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing breast cancer risk and its impact globally through art, education, prevention, and action. In 1999, Shaney Jo Darden discovered a close friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer and she wanted to do something to help and she realized that she could make a difference in a way that honored her friend's passion: art. As a result, Keep A Breast was born as a unique art concept that was developed to showcase the physical and emotional challenges of breast cancer. The result was a series of customized breast casts. In 2000, the first breast casts were officially showcased in an exhibition called “Keep A Breast.” It featured casts of pro-female snowboarders, painted by artists like Shepard Fairey and Ed Templeton. This signaled a shift toward an arts-oriented breast cancer awareness organization with a new mantra: Art. Education. Prevention. Action. Since then, Keep A Breast has grown and evolved and now has many programs within the organization. Their programs include Check Yourself (Digestible breast health education through printed materials, blogs and our KAB app.); the Keep A Breast App (A free, breast self-check app helps guide you through your monthly check and can connect you with health professionals.); Fit 4 Prevention (A national movement to educate about breast cancer prevention through fitness and wellness.); Keep A Breast Give Back Grant (Directly supporting BIPOC women who are breast cancer survivors or who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.); Treasured Chest Program (Where artistry meets therapy. TCP is designed to create a safe space that allows our castees to confront both physical and emotional changes that a breast cancer diagnosis brings.); Non Toxic Revolution (Informing, educating and inspiring young people to avoid toxic chemicals in their environment and food supply—especially those linked to the initiation of breast cancer.); and their most recent program, which Shaney Jo talked about for the first time (EXCLUSIVE!!!) Keep A Breast Valley (Boutique Wellness Center is being designed as a desert community that will provide the space and tools for visitors to explore and nurture individual and collective wellness.) Shaney Jo's story is so inspiring and the work that Keep A Breast does to empower women and support our sisters through their cancer journey is incredible. You don't want to miss this episode. Born and rasied in Huntington Beach, CA, Costa quickly became influenced and inspired by the rising scene of street skating that took the world by storm in the 1990's. With pioneers such as Jamie Thomas, The Gonz, Ed Templeton, Andrew Reynolds and so many others, Costa knew he wanted to be among his pioneers by becomig a pro rider. But with a severe leg injury, it quickly became apparant that this might not be in the cards for him. Costa began playing music during this time and with the love and support of his friends, he gave it a shot by sharing his other gift, songwriting. I've been a fan of Costa's music for quite some time and had no idea this episode of the podcast would be so genuine and fun! Costa's a special guy and one of the greats of our time. In this episode we explore his early years growing up in California, moving to Florida for a brief time, skatebaording, getting into music, his friendship with Jack Johnson and the Brushfire label, film making and so much more!

I'm a skater. It's that simple. In today's episode of ‘Chats & Tatts' Podcast by Aaron Della Vedova, I am joined by Jamie Thomas, a professional skateboarder, and the owner of Zero Skateboards and Garage Days Collection. Jamie started skateboarding when he was in high school with friends. His journey wasn't an easy rock as he suffered to be an ‘outsider,' slept on the streets, experienced hunger, and fell thousands of times on his skateboard. But these didn't stop him from wanting to belong in the skateboarding community. Then when the opportunity arose from Ed Templeton's Toy Machine, everyone was all over him. So for over twenty years in the making, Jamis has redefined the culture of skateboarding and being a skater. He showed a great drive, optimistic approach, outstanding work ethic, and remarkable progression that made his skateboarding career an inspiration to aspiring skateboarders across the globe. He earned the respect that once he hadn't. Today, as the original pioneer of groundbreaking street gnar on the board, Jamie continues to push himself in business and skateboarding, while balancing family and life. Find out how Jamie faced the challenges to land in the career he's most passionate about, what drives him to do better skateboarding every day, how he fought his inner demons, how faith and Christianity impacted his mindset, and what his future plan is in his career and business. Also, you don't want to miss this episode because, for the very first time, he'll share the deeper meaning of his tattoos! Timestamps: 1:21 - Guest intro 2:45 - Jamie's childhood background and skateboarding journey 9:34 - The importance of having a support community 15:26 - Jamie's leap of faith and breakthrough with skateboarding 23:55 - How to conquer life challenges 29:08 - How to start your own brand 33:01 - How Jamie transition from skateboarding to entrepreneurship 43:06 - The impact of the recession on a business 44:17 - Tips and tools to becoming a better version of yourself 51:52 - Why building connections matters in relationships 56:39 - Jamie reveals the reasons behind his tattoos Quotations: “I wanna focus on skateboarding. I love it! I feel like 15!” - Jamie Thomas “I felt like I needed to prove to myself that I had value and that I was worthy of being a professional skateboarder.” - Jamie Thomas “The thing that I'd learned the most was that I'd been humbled and I'd been brought to my knees… what I've been doing the last five years in order to be able to dedicate myself, to the relationships that matter most and humble myself to accept the mistakes that I'd made in the past and to try and learn from them. So they're ultimately not things that I regret. They're things that I appreciate.” - Jamie Thomas “In the late nineties, I became a Christian. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior because I knew that I had some internal demons that I was suppressing and that I was trying to navigate on my own. I reconnected with my faith...” - Jamie Thomas “...seeing life through a different lens.” - Jamie Thomas Useful Resources: Shop Zero Skateboards merchandise here: https://zeroskateboards.com/collections/all-products Get in touch: Follow Jamie on zeroskateboards.com; Facebook; Instagram; and Twitter Connect with Aaron: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chatsandtatts/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AaronVedova Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaron.dellavedova/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@chatsandtatts/featured

Jamie Thomas grew up as a country bumpkin in the backwoods of Alabama, before being recognized at local contests by Vans, and Real Skateboards. He then moved to San Francisco, where he was homeless for a portion of time as he continued to establish himself as a skateboarder. Bouncing between board brands like Experience and Invisible, Jamie is offered a place on the Flip team alongside Rune Glifberg, Geoff Rowley and Tom Penny, but turns this down for the opportunity to rebuild Toy Machine's team with Ed Templeton. Later on, Zero is born from Andy Howell's company Zero Sophisto, and Andy gives Jamie his blessing to take Zero, and run with it, with the help of Tom Swank over at Tum Yeto. Zero quickly becomes a board brand, picking up talented team riders such as Adrian Lopez, Chris Cole, Ryan Smith, Copelman, Marisa Del Santo, Windsor James, and others. Together, the team put out some of the early 2000's most iconic videos, such as Thrill of it all, Dying to Live, Misled Youth, Strange World, No Cash Value, Cold War, and most recently, thrill of it all. Nowadays, they have a stacked team with the likes of Tommy Sandoval, Garette Hill, Jamie, Chris Wimer, and even some Canadians, like JS Lapierre, Colin Lambert and Mikey Ray. He's also had so much to do with the growth when those sports started exploding on social media. A few weeks back, Radio Juxtapoz traveled to Tokyo, Japan for the RVCA World Tour, a 7-day takeover of the city that saw numerous art shows, signings, screenings, pop-ups occur in and around Shibuya. Obviously, our focus was the Beautiful Losers: Now & Then show, and it gave us a chance to talk with two of our favorite photographers: the talented and influential Ed and Deanna Templeton. Ed Templeton has been blazed across our memories as a legendary skater who was able to take his skate craft and create fine art and photography that has made him famous the world over. Deanna Templeton has been making these incredibly poetic projects for years, with her The Swimming Pool coming to mind first and foremost. We sat down with Ed and Deanna on a steamy hot Tokyo summer day after a day of RVCA press for the couple. Our conversation went all over: how it feels to bring the Losers back together again, what an Ed shot is versus a Deanna shot, how their longtime home base of Huntington Beach may not be inspiring them anymore and what makes Tokyo a magical place to take photos. The Radio Juxtapoz Podcast is hosted by Doug Gillen and Evan Pricco. Thank you to RVCA for their support of Episode 019 and 020 of the Radio Juxtapoz Podcast. Part 3 of Ed Templeton episodes - please see FALLUCKA #5 & 6 for the previous ones. The reason Ed Templeton was in Copenhagen was that he was here to make a book signing on his latest book Tangentially Parenthetical. We talk about selected artworks in the book as well as the idea behind the book. We talk about the people in the book and the situations the pictures are taken in. We also talk about buying art with the heart vs as an investment, and why the selected works in the book speak to him. We talk about skateboarding and a completely unplanned talk of his crash in Lucerne in Switzerland in 2000 during The Grand Prix of skateboarding. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment” flow. With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design. The same is true for my mixed media work. My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. The piece I'm working on will in a way “call” to the color that needs to be added next.” https://dougbale.bigcartel.com/ https://society6.com/dougbale You can follow Doug's art on Instagram: @dougbale Paul Krauss MA LPC is the Clinical Director of Health for Life Grand Rapids, home of The Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids. Ed Templeton joins the podcast to talk about his latest photography book "Tangentially Parenthetical" (link below) and how he from being one of the most influential street skaters of his generation to showcasing his paintings and photography in highly respected galleries and collections. This week I catch up with American artist Thomas Campbell. We discuss the many different mediums he works with and coming up in the art world along side artists such as Barry McGee and Ed Templeton.
“None. They should just go out and photograph and stop talking about it. That’s the only way they are going to find themselves. They can’t do it in their heads – they have to go out and do it in the camera and get it on film” - Berenice Abbott - when asked is she had any gems of wisdom for the photographer today, Professional Photographer's Survival Guide by Charles E. RotkinOur guest this week is London-based photographer, Matt Stuart. Best known as a “street photographer,” (or “photographer” which is the preferred term), Matt told us how his former life as a skater and working in a call centre prepared him for a career in photography. We didn’t spend much time discussing Berenice Abbott, - or Walker Evans, or Helen Levitt or Robert Frank - but take a look at her work which spanned portraiture of avant-garde artists, the modernising spaces of New York City, to representations of scientific concepts. “Don’t be repressed in your work, dare to experiment, consider any urge, if in a new direction all the better.” – Edward WestonWelcome to the Outerfocus Podcast!Episode 27. I can’t quite believe we’ve been jabbering away for so long. Are you not sick of us yet? This milestone episode (every episode is a milestone, for like, a metaphorical mile or something) we are joined by World Champion skate boarder, Ed Templeton. Ed is a pro skateboarder, photographer, designer, painter, skateboard company (Toy Machine) owner and all round nice guy. Among many other things. We were delighted that he gave us his time and chatted for a good two hours, and we could have gone way longer. The conversation started going as soon as the record button went down, so I’ve pretty much left this episode uncut. I’ve chopped a couple of bits that I didn’t think were relevant, due to time and file size constraints, but this is how it went down. We also mention Edward Weston. Oh, and Ansel Adams. In this episode I got to sit down with skateboarder, teacher, educator, and Documentary Film Maker Ms. Kelli Watson. Straight up, Kelli is an awesome human being. Her love of skateboarding comes from a slightly different angle than most and in part due to working with skateboarders who are also her students. She's developed a passion for the culture and is about to premier her second Documentary 'We Can Fly 2' about skateboarding and creativity. I was stoked to be featured in her first film 'We Can Fly' along side such awesome artists such as; Ben Gore, Ed Templeton, Eloise Dorr and Barry Kay (to name a few)! Check out the episode and then come down to the premier of 'We Can Fly 2' at the Doomed Gallery (65 Ridley Rd, London E8 2NP) on the 7th of August from 6pm! Free beer, free art and good vibes! Desiree welcomed Jamie Thomas aka "The Chief" in studio April 17th. There are so many amazing facets to this man it is merely impossible to cover all in an hour (even with some bonus time) to include all that this man has done and continues to do. I made a lil dent. Find out about Jamie’s new podcast Thrill Of it All dropping in May, how Rocky inspired him, parts of his path; from Dotham, Alabama (along with how to pronounce it) to SF to SD to where he is today, from Invisible to Toy to Zero and little bits of his path along the way. Throw in with some awesome quotes/words from Ed Templeton, Don Brown, Dave Bergthold and Adrian Lopez. Even a few words from Grant Britain on the 'Leap of Faith'. And a special extended show, not previously aired with a phenomenal plastic guitar solo intro by “the Chief” I dare say on his first signature guitar and much much more! The Desiree Show airs Wednesday 4-5 PM PST on Dash Radio, (re-airs Thursday 10AM PST, among other times and days throughout the week). Follow the show and Desiree on IG, Twitter and Facebook along with her personal Tw and IG accounts. Thanks to Rebound's support to the Desiree SHOW
Freestyle-avsnittet! Trevlig lyssning!Denis och Mathias. This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the independent Immaculate Heart community. This event is presented in conjunction with Artwalk, which will features Sister Corita's work on display at the Hollywood Lutheran Church (1733 N. New Hampshire Ave.) and other venues throughout Los Feliz. Four books related to the Sister Corita and the Immaculate Heart community will be available for purchase. He's only interested in painting, movies, gardening, politics, and Plant Spirit Medicine. Read that book.
