Segrarna skriver historien, men historien skapas inte av segrare. Och ibland är det förlorarna som vinner. Malin Krutmeijer förklarar. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Visste ni att Winnemem Wintu-stammen i norra Kalifornien har fått tillbaka sin lax? Chinook-laxen, på svenska kungslax, lekte i McCloudfloden så länge att den är en del av Winnemems ursprungsmyt. Det var den som gav dem röster att tala och sjunga med, i utbyte mot att de lovade att alltid beskydda laxen och tala i dess sak.Med de europeiska nybyggarna kom laxodling och 1945 ett dammbygge. Det blev slutet för den vilda laxen. Winnemem-stammen gick nästan samma öde till mötes. Idag är de ett par hundra medlemmar.Men de har lyckats köpa tillbaka mark, och sextio år efter det ödesdigra dammbygget bestämde de sig för att utföra att utföra en rituell dans för laxen. De dansade i flera dagar och det hela fick internationell uppmärksamhet. Plötsligt kom ett mail från andra sidan världen: ”Vi har er lax.”Det visade sig att laxodlingsföretaget hade exporterat laxägg, och i en flod på maoriernas mark i södra Nya Zeeland hade de kläckts och fisken frodats. Nu skickade maorierna tillbaka befruktade laxägg. Kungslaxen är tillbaka i McCloudfloden. Den här historien är ett exempel på vilken kulturell styrka ursprungsamerikanerna besitter, trots att de genomlevt ett halvt årtusende av förtryck. Det är inte ur det perspektivet man brukar berätta om de amerikanska urfolken och den europeiska kolonisationen.Teorierna om när människorna anlände till Amerika är inte entydiga, men de kom från Sibirien, troligen för 20-30 000 år sedan. Då fanns det en landtunga över Behrings sund, och de följde sina bytesdjur över den. Sakta vandrade de söderut. Omkring 10 000 år före vår tideräkning var Amerika befolkat från Alaska i norr till Monte Verde i södra Chile. Från de här människorna härstammar Nord- och Sydamerikas ursprungsbefolkning. I sin bok ”Indigenous continent” tecknar historieprofessorn Pekka Hämäläinen en bild av deras liv som rent paradisiskt. Välsignade med ett överflöd av fisk, vilt, örter och egna odlingar levde de i trygga, politiskt sofistikerade samhällen, från byar till högkulturer som Inka och Maya. Vi vet ju vad som hände, eller hur? Européerna anlände. Först spanjorerna, efter dem fransmän, holländare och britter. Kolonisationen innebar snudd på utplåning genom flera hundra år av krig, massakrer, fördrivning, slaveri, europeiska sjukdomar och tvångsassimilation. I historieböckerna har vi fått lära oss att den ursprungsamerikanska kulturen blev helt förödd.Segrarna skriver historien heter det ju – men vad är en segrare? Vad är en förlorare? Pekka Hämäläinens bok är ett exempel på ny historieforskning som vrider och vänder på sådana frågor ur ursprungsamerikansk synvinkel.En annan som arbetar i samma anda är antropologen David Treuer, som bland annat gjort en nytolkning av den ökända massakern vid Wounded Knee 1890. Han tillhör själv Ojibwe-stammen, och har skrivit om hur historieskrivningen om ursprungsbefolkningens utplåning påverkade honom som ung.”Och ändå”, skrev han, ”kändes det inte som om min kultur och civilisation var borta”. Nej, det är den ju inte. Ursprungsamerikanerna är idag flera miljoner. De har tillskansat sig stort självbestämmande och varken deras språk eller kulturer är utdöda. Hur gjorde de för att överleva? Till att börja med ska man inte göra misstaget att tro att ursprungsamerikanerna hade levt i något slags oförändrad, konserverad kultur tills européerna kom. De hade redan många gånger genomlevt konflikter, revolter, klimatförändringar och civilisationer som föll. Deras samhällen var inte likadana, och olika grupper hade visat stor förmåga till flexibilitet. De var med andra ord inte helt handfallna i mötet med européerna, utan provade olika strategier. Hämäläinen skildrar hur de kunde lura iväg spanjorer, fransmän och engelsmän ut i vildmarken. Hur de slogs, bedrev handel eller vandrade till nya landområden. De bildade allianser, både med andra ursprungsamerikanska folk och med kolonisatörerna.Den officiella historieskrivningen brukar inte intressera sig så mycket för sådant här, eftersom ursprungsfolken inte lyckades etablera sig som den dominerande gruppen i förhållande till européerna. Deras strategier blir gärna en fotnot i segrarens stora bok, trots att de påverkade historien. För historien skapas inte bara genom dominans. Också ursprungsamerikanernas mindre manövrer, som att erbjuda handel med en viss vara och inte en annan, att förhala en landockupation, att ingå ett tillfälligt samarbete eller bedriva något som liknade gerillakrigföring, formade utvecklingen av de amerikanska samhällena. Pekka Hämäläinens metod för att visa detta är att i närgången detalj skildra händelser och handlingskedjor där ursprungsamerikanerna parerade eller initierade motstånd mot kolonialmakten. Historikern Ned Blackhawk har ett lite annat angreppssätt och ger större utrymme för de materiella förutsättningarna. I boken ”The rediscovery of America” får vi bland annat veta sådant som hur mycket spanjorerna tjänade på att förslava ursprungsbefolkningen i Mexikos silvergruvor. Blackhawk ger en bild av konflikt, kamp och förlust. Inte minst ger han sig in i en verklig historisk smärtpunkt, nämligen när nybyggare från Europa vällde in i Nordamerika på 1800-talet. I USA:s nationalistiska historieskrivning brukar det heta att de modigt och mödosamt flyttade civilisationsgränsen, the frontier, från kust till kust. Det har beskrivits som en triumf – så grundades världens största och bästa demokrati.För ursprungsamerikanerna var det istället en skärseld. Staten hade begränsad kontroll över nybyggarnas framfart, och för dem var ursprungsbefolkningen fienden, en lägre stående sorts människa. En våldsam rasism frodades med ren utrotning som mål. Det var folkmordets tid. Ett folkmord som alltså är inbyggt i nationens själva idé om sig själv. Det är inte bara vare sig segrarna eller minoriteternas effektiva motstånd som formar ett samhälle. Sanningen om ett samhälle kan finnas i hur förlusten är konstituerad.När 1900-talet tog vid, efter 1800-talets massakrer och fördrivningar, inleddes en politik där tvångsassimilation stod på agendan. Då trädde ursprungsamerikaner fram och inledde en intensiv kamp för sina rättigheter. Nu var det de som millimeter för millimeter, och med många bakslag, tillskansade sig rätten till land, språk och inte minst rätten att bli medborgare och rösta i sitt eget land. Ur askan reste de sig: Oneida, Ojibwe, Latoka, Shoshone – de officiellt erkända ursprungsamerikanska nationerna är idag långt över femhundra.Och så finns förstås sådana som Winnemem Wintu-stammen, som fick hem sin heliga lax. Bohumil Pečinka vystudoval Fakultu sociální věd UK, rovněž studoval historii a politologii na Filozofické fakultě UK. V prosinci 1989 spoluzaložil čtrnáctideník Studentské listy, po jeho zániku koncem roku 1991 začal pracoval v časopisu Reflex. V letech 1994 až 1997 pracoval v Lidových novinách a od roku 1999 se opět stal komentátorem Reflexu, později také zástupcem šéfredaktora. V únoru 1999 získal novinářskou cenu Ferdinanda Peroutky. Nyní je známý mimo jiné jako autor podcastu Kecy a Politika. V tomto díle Štěpán Křeček s Bohumilem Pečinkou rozebírají vývoj a budoucí směřování Evropské unie. Vysvětlují, proč EU postupně ztrácí svůj vliv, jak se mění její vnitřní dynamika a proč hrozí rostoucí radikalizace. Dojde také na srovnání se světovými mocnostmi, zamyšlení nad tím, co by mohlo evropský vývoj změnit, a úvahy o vztahu politické síly a byrokracie, která často rozhodování Unie komplikuje.

Tam de facto začala má aktivita,“ přiznává historik a spisovatel zaměřený na církevní dějiny Michal Bařinka. „Právě tam jsem se odhodlal k tomu, že chci poutní místa popularizovat a začala ve mně klíčit myšlenka, jestli bych neměl někdy v budoucnu sepsat i turistické průvodce,“ doplňuje v pořadu Hovory.

The Inka Empire, the largest in the pre-Columbian Americas, is renowned for its impressive engineering feats, including an extensive road network and monumental architecture. Although the Inkas did not have a traditional writing system, they recorded information using a unique method: khipus. These knotted cords were essential tools for communication and record-keeping. Through meticulous structural analysis and documentation, FitzPatrick seeks to uncover the meanings encoded in khipus beyond their numerical knots. FitzPatrick's project not only aims to advance archaeological knowledge but also seeks to reframe public understanding of the Inka Empire's complex administrative capabilities. By preserving and interpreting khipus, he hopes to reveal a more nuanced history of the Andean civilizations, illuminating the enduring legacy of their cultural innovations for contemporary audiences, as well as a powerful Indigenous perspective on Andean history—one distinct from narratives provided by Europeans.

Det finns en lång tradition med glass i Latinamerika.– I Bolivia, i små byar i Anderna, gör man glass på samma sätt som man gjort sedan före Inka-tiden, berättar Maria Borda.Där, fyra-femtusen meter över havet, är det så kallt att man frös glassen utomhus.Maria bjuder på en Inka-glass gjord av ett frö som är släkt med quinoa. Paletas, pinnglass är vanligt i Bolivia, trots att det ofta är mycket kallt där.De kommer i många former: som isglass, fruktglass, mjölkglass och veganska. Gemensamt för dem är den mjuka, bitvänliga konsistensen. Och att de är enkla att göra.Maria Borda är född i Argentina, men hennes familj är från Bolivia. Hon var 25 dagar gammal när hon kom till Sverige med sina föräldrar. Senare flyttade hon tillbaka till Bolivia med sin son och startade en restaurang, som förstås hade egengjorda paletas.Maria har samlat sin glasskärlek i en bok som heter Paletas - pinnglass på latinamerikanskt vis.

For proteins there is beef, pork, chicken, alpaca, and a specialty — guinea pig! The portions are also very large. You shouldn't drink the water (even to brush your teeth) and consider avoiding salads, veggies, and fruits that are rinsed in water Tamara and Hannah took a 5 day trek with a small group of six people and one local guide with Mountain Lodges of Peru. The trip was perfect for those that like to hike but don't want to camp. It includes a mix of cultural activities and hikes but you stay at nice lodges. Some activities included visiting an alpaca museum, a ceremony with an Incan priest, enjoying dancing and music with locals at a weaving cooperative, visiting local markets, exploring Incan ruins, and having lunch at local homes. You need to bring your own hiking poles and need to pack in a light duffel bag or backpack The rainy season is typically November – April and they typically close the Inca Trail in February. However, this year was worse than usual because of El Niño. For the most part you can use credit cards but it helps to have some Peruvian Soles (or some US Dollars) to tip guides, pay for bathrooms, and purchase from local vendors and markets. For the first two nights in Cusco, we stayed at the Andenes Hotel, which was affordable, nice, and great traditional architecture. How does a young boy from Lima, Peru grow up to become a world-renowned conductor? What is the role of the conductor in the music their orchestra is performing? What new goals do the Shepherd School of Music have for the 2025-2026 school year?Miguel Harth-Bedoya is an Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated conductor, and also the Mary Franks Thompson Professor of Orchestral Studies at Baylor University and overseer of the Shepherd School's preeminent orchestral programs in the 2025-26 season. Miguel and host David Mansouri discuss Miguel's journey to finding a love for music and he explains some about his philosophy on conducting. And sometimes you have to agree to disagree or have others understand that maybe you did it this way, but I think it's this way. As a matter of fact, what I bring to Rice, or what I will be doing at Rice, is what I've been doing officially since I joined academia, which is: I teach musicians, I teach artists, music teachers, and I teach music lovers. We, as musicians, have to know people in every aspect if we want to think about doing what we're talking about. You cannot have a plan about engaging people in what we do and not be part of it. So, in other words, you have to get your hands dirty. If you want to plant the soil, you cannot just correct from above and let others.How Miguel is opening doors to music and life beyond performance34:26: In the current times that we live in, the 21st century, and with the technologies that we have available to connect throughout the world, I think creating the doorway—it's both literally a door to get into a building but also a virtual door to expose, first of all, what a musician is and what life as a musician is as well. And because we see somebody performing surgery, it doesn't mean we know the life of a surgeon. In creating more of that, in promoting that, that gateway is there early on, rather than waiting until you're out of high school before you dare to come to my building. And the one way I do this, personally, is by keeping in touch with the younger crowd.
