Photographers have a magical ability to transport us to hidden worlds, giving us intimate access to facets of society that would otherwise go unnoticed. Above photograph © Marcela Taboada In today's podcast, we sit down with Mexican photographer Marcela Taboada, whose long-term documentary projects offer revealing glimpses into underrecognized communities, for Picturing World Cultures. Combining a passion for making pictures that let her “see backstage,” with a knack for “knocking doors” and the tenacity to win over resistant subjects, Marcela gained rare access to photograph the daily lives of Mexico's cloistered nuns. Follow her painstaking process and learn the secret to her acceptance as the nuns' photography godmother during our chat.     We also discuss her series “Women of Clay,” documenting the enterprising women of a Mixtec village, who singlehandedly rebuilt their homes after an earthquake using Adobe bricks and a process taught by a Mexican architect. Along the way, Marcela shares insights about the challenges of pursuing a photography career as a single mother with young children and reveals the lessons she learned from seeing aspects of her own story reflected in the lives of her subjects.  If you haven't already listened, check out all the episodes of our Picturing World Cultures podcast series here. Guest: Marcela Taboada Episode Timeline: 2:21: Marcela's process in making pictures that let her “see backstage.”  5:15: A childhood memory and her fascination with viewing the stars from an observatory built by her great uncle.  10:16: Marcela's introduction to cameras and the darkroom by photographing family trips. 13:24: University studies and a photo series inspired by her great aunt entering a Mexican nursing home.  18:13: Marcela's photo gear and juggling her early photo career while raising two children as a single mother. 22:52: Marcela's photo series Women of Clay, about a community of enterprising women who rebuilt their homes after an earthquake. 35:19: Episode Break 36:30: Marcela's project Consecrated, and some background on Catholic monasteries in Mexico. 43:46: The seven orders of Mexican cloistered nuns, Marcela's long process to gain access to photograph, and the miracle that finally convinced the nuns to let her in. 53:51: Marcela's role as photography godmother for the Conceptionist order, and her approach to photographing the lives of the nuns. 1:00:38: The decision to photograph in color with a lightweight Sony RX camera for quiet operation and a contemporary look.  1:02:31: The nuns' reaction to Marcela's pictures and the ways in which they've adapted to 21st century life. 1:08:09: Marcela Taboada answers our PWC Visual Questionnaire. Guest Bio: Marcela Taboada is a freelance photographer based in Oaxaca, Mexico since 1986. "What I'm always trying to do is to make a picture that goes beyond a story." "If you can shoot on the street, you can shoot anything." -- Mary Ellen Mark   In this episode, Antonio and Ward begin with some "light" conversation about the aurora making a rare appearance in New York. Antonio reflects on the quiet satisfaction of finally catching a glimpse, even though his neighbors' iPhones seemed to perform better than his carefully chosen Fujifilm setup. It wasn't just about getting the perfect shot—it was about being part of the moment and feeling connected to something beyond the ordinary. But the episode really finds its rhythm when the conversation turns to Mary Ellen Mark. Both Antonio and Ward admire her ability to disappear into the scenes she captured, especially during her time as the set photographer on Apocalypse Now. They talk about how her photographs of Brando feel less like production stills and more like windows into the very essence of his character, Colonel Kurtz. There's a shared sense of respect between Antonio and Ward as they reflect on how Mark's work goes beyond mere documentation—her images feel lived in, revealing moments that carry an emotional weight. It's clear that discussing Mark taps into something personal for both of them: an appreciation for the kind of photography that isn't just seen but felt.   Subscribe to our Substack Newsletter Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Y espacios. Its hard to imagine a more ideal guest for a photography podcast than the wonderful Ralph Gibson.  Gibson checks all the boxes—a straight-up master of the medium, a man of insights and tales, with a comprehensive understanding of photography from the nuts and bolts to the conceptual rigors. After training in the Navy, he assisted the great Dorothea Lange in the darkroom, but found his calling as an artist, staying true to his voice, and founding a publishing house for his seminal photo book, The Somnambulist, and those of many other artists, including Larry Clark, Mary Ellen Mark, and Duane Michals. On this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we speak with Gibson about Robert Frank and Dorothea Lange, about establishing a visual signature, “broken focus,” and of course, about his trusty Leica systems. We also touch on his relationship with musician and artist Lou Reed, 50mm versus 75mm lenses, deconstructing the tropes of photography, and the connections between music and photography. This was a conversation we wished could have continued for hours, and we suggest you consider one of Gibson’s bookmaking workshops or simply dig into his incredible body of work, perhaps starting with his latest book, Sacred Land: Israel Before and After Time. Join us for this wide-ranging and inspiring conversation, and as Gibson states, “I always believed that if I stayed true to my work, everything else would fall into place.” Guest: Ralph Gibson Photograph © Ralph Gibson

Today we welcome a special guest to the B&H Photography Podcast: actor and comedian Jeff Garlin.  We also are launching the B&H Photography Podcast Leica Photo Challenge, so please click the link to find out how to enter to win a Leica Q2 Digital Camera. Jeff Garlin is well-known as a stand-up comedian and, of course, as a star of the hit television shows, The Goldbergs and Curb Your Enthusiam. About fifteen years ago, he turned a love for photography, for the work of the masters—Alfred Eisenstadt, Jim Marshall, Mary Ellen Mark, to name a few—into his own photographic practice, and we are all the beneficiaries of his engaged eye. In March, Garlin debuted his series, “A Big Bowl of Wonderful,” at the Leica Gallery Los Angeles, and we talk to him about how this series of portraits of his co-stars and friends in the television community—many taken on set or backstage—developed over a long curve, one founded in respect for the medium and applied with a simple stratagem: see something interesting and frame it in the most creative way possible. With that in mind, we talk about trusting your gut, not overthinking a shot, being comfortable with your subjects, but also about gaining the confidence to take photos, especially of those you know and respect. Garlin also talks about his affinity for Leica, especially the M system, about the difference between actors and comedians, and talking photography with Jeff Bridges. We also ask him about his role as executive producer on the film, Finding Vivian Maier. This really is a photography lover’s conversation, summed up best by one of Garlin’s comments: “I’m taking a picture because it brings me joy.” About bringing joy. If you are interested in winning a Leica Q2 Digital Camera, be sure to enter the B&H Photography Podcast Leica Challenge, which launches May 28, 2020 and runs until June 21, 2020. Click the link, follow the instructions, submit a photo you have taken recently that reflects “life during shutdown,” and you could be the winner of this spectacular 47MP full-frame Leica camera.  Join us for a great episode. If you find one… send it in! We discussed the Levi’s Incredible Shrinking Man billboards. Shot by the incredible @NadavKander - https://twitter.com/NadavKander. We heard how photographer Mary Ellen Mark, a millionairess and a colour photocopier helped create the iconic Levi’s ‘Haters’ posters.Read more about the incredible photographer Mary Ellen Mark: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/gallery/2015/may/26/mary-ellen-mark-legendary-photographs-in-pictures Then a decade of Lynx billboard brilliance. We talked about the work for Lynx on 24hours, Masculine and Feminine, The Cerne Giant and The Lynx Effect in general. On Lynx in particular, Rosie talks about how having good client relationships, outside of the meeting room, is conducive to creating great work. Meeting rooms can be far too high stress for the natural flow of a creative mind to affect the work. We talked about the unsung heroes of these and other campaigns that really stand out… the brave Marketing leads at the client who are prepared to get behind the work, stick their necks on the line and cut a cheque for the music/production/shoot. They believe in the work and the creative process as much as the agency. Although we strayed away from Rosies work for a while, we talked a bit about what makes great Outdoor work. The simplicity of Outdoor is where some great creative work can happen. Rosie waxed lyrical about Cossette’s Cannes Grand Prix winning billboards for McDonalds, by friend of the show Carlos Moreno. The simplicity of this concept heroes the brand and the medium in one shot. We moved on to KFC and the amazing illustrative work from Surachai and his Thai team [who have amassed over 90 Lions by the way]. We talked about the ‘Just Add Robinsons’ campaign for Robinsons fruit drinks. This iconic work flipped the just add water message on its head and demonstrated the magic that happens in a glass of water when you add Robinsons. The ads we contextual to the summer and outdoor feeling, including one for the Wimbledon Tennis Championship that Robinsons sponsors. And then the big move from BBH to AMV. Following a life changing few years Rosie headed off to become Head of Art at AMV. Going off to work with Alex and Adrian as ECDs… which lead us on to a proactive piece for Malteasers.  Finally, she even shared with us a bottom drawer billboard idea for Red Nose Day. Redrawing it live on air - a first for the pod - maybe it’ll become a regular feature? Thanks Rosie for being inspiring, fascinating, fun and more. The world and our industry is a brighter place with you in it.

Marco invited back his friend and PPN co-founder Scott Bourn to the traditional “end of the year in front of the virtual fireplace” Camera and Inspiration episode. And as this is also the last show of the decade, they look back at the past ten years and how it has influenced the world of photography.   This show is sponsored by COSYSPEED: http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC    COSYSPEED Lens Pouche Indigogo campaign: http://bit.ly/fundlenspouch    Inspirational photographer of the month: Scott picked Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948 in Tokyo). Scott is particularly impressed with the Diorama photography that Hiroshi Sugimoto creates. It is a great example that there are many different areas in photography away from the very common themes that are worth exploring and that can lead to an excellent portfolio and make a photographer famous in a niche genre, too. Sugimoto has more work that is worth exploring and he has won many international photo awards and exhibited his work around the world. You can find out more about Hiroshi Sugimoto by visiting his website: https://www.sugimotohiroshi.com Here is a video interview where Hiroshi Sugimoto talks about his diorama work: https://youtu.be/q9GiyPbLYPg   What has happened in the past decade of photography? Some of the important photographers that have passed away in the past decade:   Robert Frank 1924-2019 - 94- Swiss / American Photographer. He was working for Life, Vogue and Fortune Magazine. In 1955 he received a Guggenheim grant that allowed him to do a social documentary in the USA for 2 years. Frank took 28.000 images during this time and 83 of these images were curated and published in the book “The Americans” that turned out to be the most important photo documentary of the 1950s in the US.   Peter Lindbergh (1944-2019) - He was a German fashion photographer. His image of five young models in downtown NY made the cover of the British Vogue in 1990. This started a new Zeitgeist in fashion photography after the high-gloss and make-up overkill era of the 1980s. He created a new understanding of female beauty with his black and white raw and alluring film images.   Fred Herzog (1930-2019) - He was a documentary photographer who was born in Germany and migrated to Vancouver Canada in 1953 where he documented the seemingly unspectacular everyday life of the city with his Leica on Kodachrome film.   Terry O’Neill (1938-2019) - He was a British celebrity photographer - He documented celebrities like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John and so on. And he did it mainly in a candid photography style.   Robert Freeman (1936-2019) - He was also a British photographer who is known as the Beatles photographer.   Ara Güler (1928-2018) - Ara was probably the most influential Turkish photographer so far. He was also a Magnum photographer that traveled the world and captured many amazing images with his analog camera on B&W film. But most of his work portraits his home town Istanbul - his portfolio is an amazing visual history of this city. His nickname was the Eye of Istanbul. https://www.magnumphotos.com/newsroom/ara-guler-1928-2018/   Ren Hang (1987-2017) - He is regarded as a controversial Chinese photographer who was known for taking nude portraits of his friends. But he suffered from depression and took his life at age 29. His work is currently exhibited at the ℅ Berlin photo gallery it runs until February 29th, 2020.   Ben Martin (1930-2017) - He was a staff photographer for TIME and LIFE magazine who covered many memorable events like presidential debates between Nixon and Kennedy, JFK’s funeral, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights events.   Pete Turner (1934-2017) - He was one of the first masters of color photography. He started to experiment with colors as a teenager and his work merged the lines between art and commercial photography. He loved breaking the rules and this made him one of the most influential photographers of all time. Some of his stunning color photos can be seen in the book Color of Jazz. His most famous photo shows a giraffe silhouette with a bright red sky and purple ground.   Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) - She was a US photojournalist and Magnum member. She focused most of her work showing people who lived at the fringes of society. Her images display the empathy that she must have felt for her subjects.   Saul Leiter (1923-2013) - He was a US photographer and painter. His street photos of New York are beautifully captured and many resemble the look of a beautiful painting.   There are countless more amazing photographers that we did not cover here - many not as famous as they would have deserved to be but that have created amazing work. And we’ll continue to pick one photographer on each PPN Camera and Inspiration show in the future. But if you want to share other photographers that you feel very strongly about just add that photographers' name with a quick explanation of what you like about his or her work to the show notes below. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: “Born Free and Equal - The Story of Loyal Japanese Americans ” by Ansel Adams. An overview from the publisher: “On February 19, 1942, U.S. presidential order forcibly removed more than 110,000 persons from their homes to one of ten "war relocation centers" across the country. All were of Japanese ancestry, but two-thirds were American citizens. Ralph Merritt, then director of Manzanar War Relocation Center, asked friend Ansel Adams to photograph the center, set against the remote mountains of California's Sierra Nevada. The resulting effort, Born Free and Equal: The Story of Loyal Japanese Americans, written and photographed by Adams, was released in 1944 to the American public as a book and exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Reeling from the impact of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and unable to make the distinction between American citizens of Japanese ancestry and the Japanese enemy of war, Adams' message was essentially lost on the American public.” The book is published by: Spotted Dog Press 128 Pages Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/Born-Free-Equal-Japanese-Americans/dp/1893343057 Links to Scott Bourne: Web: https://scottbourne.online  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bourne.scott/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scottbourne  Twitter: https://twitter.com/scottbourne  Podcast: https://picturemethods.com/category/podcasts/    Links to Marco Larousse: Web: www.MarcoLarousse.com  Twitter: @HamburgCam Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marco.larousse/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcoLarousse1  Workshops: https://www.marcolarousse.com/street-photography-workshops/    Links to PPN: Web: www.PhotoPodcasts.com or PPN.fm Twitter: @Photopodcasts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photopodcasts/ YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/PPNPhotoPodcastNetwork  Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/ppn-apple-podcasts  Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/PPN-GooglePodcast Spotify: http://bit.ly/PPN-fm Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) or Amazon Germany link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H or Amazon without our link.   Check out the Skylum LUMINAR software: Link: http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3 (use the discount code “PHOTOPODCASTS” at checkout for extra savings)   And please share this podcast with your friends and subscribe via Apple podcasts, Google Podcasts, or search for “PPN” in your favorite podcast app. We would also love to get your feedback. It's your chance, as high school trickles away, to say "This is who I am. This will be who I was."We've been looking at prom photos by Mary Ellen Mark, who will be on our show today, and they're striking in the range of emotional states they convey. We see joy, hesitation, confidence, detachment and some flat-out haunted looks.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week marks the end of year six of OTP and we're talking about style - specifically questions around whether or not our particular style of making (photographic, design, painting or otherwise) is “baked” into how we see. If we stray too far from what we “know” does it simply look like we're trying to emulate someone else? Also, a listener asks what (if any) obligation does one creative have to another? Mary Ellen Mark is our Photographer of the Week. Thank you for being here, for listening each week and for being so generous with your time and attention. We appreciate it. See you in year seven!

Today we’re going to talk mostly about street photography. Whereas street photography is not necessarily practiced while traveling (many street photographers have actually become famous for portraying the scenes of their hometown), we think that photographing life in the streets goes a long way towards documenting the reality of the cities and countries we visit.Because of this, we often like to interview people who have chosen to practice this somewhat popular but often misunderstood genre, like our guest of today, Marco Larousse.Marco is an international analog and digital fine art, street and documentary photographer based in Hamburg, Germany. He has a background in photography of 30+ years. In the 1990’s he developed his passion for classic street and documentary photograph. He shares this passion in his workshops or public speeches on street photography. Marco strives to create a positive awareness for this important art form by documenting contemporary daily life for future generations in a world where cameras in public are increasingly seen as a threat.Marco is also an accredited journalist and a member at FREELENS. He has also been producing photography related podcasts since 2015. In 2017 he co-founded PPN Photo Podcast Network where he works as editor, host, and producer.Marco Larousse is very passionate about the power and importance of preserving contemporary visual memories for future generations. The ability to tell a story with only one image is what made photography his preferred outlet to express himself. Capturing unique unposed moments to document our contemporary daily life for future generations is a challenge that keeps him motivated each day. His work has been influenced by the work of Mary Ellen Mark’s style of documenting life with a lot of affection and respect for the subjects that are being photographed. Imagine bringing together some of the world's most distinguished artists to tell the story of arguably the most important advancement in the recent history of humankind.  That advancement is the vaccine.  And just some of the artists we're talking about are: Photographers and photojournalists Sebastiao Salgado, Mary Ellen Mark, Glen Wexler, and Annie Leibovitz; Writers Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Geraldine Brooks; Visual artist Han Feng; Musician Angelique Kidjo Filmaker Luc Jacquet (of March of the Penguins fame)  Imagine working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to make something called “The Art of Saving a Life”.  Who could make something like this happen? Meet Christine McNab. Christine is my guest on this week's show.  She is a photographer, development consultant, TED speaker, and many other things (including being a fellow Canadian). Christine is one of those rare and wonderful people who can connect things.  She was the designer and driver behind the Art of Saving a Life and joins me to share the story of this amazing initiative. However, there is more to Christine than this (and to understand how the project came to be you need to understand how Christine approaches things). We discuss a wide range of topics, including her most recent project “A River Runs With Her”.  We also cover: Christine's background in journalism; Her work as Director of Communications at the World Health Organisation (WHO) – and we get into things like SARS, risk communication and related areas; Moving on from that role (and taking risks); The Art of Saving a Life of course A River Runs With Her And much more!  I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and am very excited to share it with you! James Carbone’s life is a study of cultures that’s expressed through his passion for photography. Carbone was born in Los Angeles, Calif. From an early age Carbone read through the books of great photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Mary Ellen Mark. “Seeing all those great images started my obsession with photography,” Carbone says. For the past ten years Carbone has studied under Mary Ellen Mark, a world-renown documentary photographer. The two started working together at Rockport College in Maine and have continued at Pacific Center Northwest in Seattle and El Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo Center in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since 2000, he has documented the day-to-day life of the Lopez family, pepenadores (literally “sorters”) who struggle to survive by scavenging plastic bottles in a garbage dump. He is currently collecting the photos for an upcoming book. His work continues with a chain of newspapers and magazines in Los Angeles and in the San Bernardino Counties. In every picture, Carbone uses composition to interpret reality and capture it in an image that resonates with his audience. “Every time I shoot I try to create an instant connection,” Carbone said. “I like to get close to people. When I’m right next to them, there’s a connection. They trust me, and that’s how I can build a really true image of their humanity.” www.jamescarbone.com www.maryellenmark.com www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

It's just a dance, right?Actually, maybe that's the last thing the prom is. Maybe the photo is even more important, because it freezes you.
